[UC] Car broken into - Handicapped Sign stolen

2008-02-17 Thread Al Airone
A car on the 1000 block of S 47 was broken into last night and apparently the
only thing taken was the Handicapped sign in the window (the car was legally
parked in a designated handicapped parking spot). I know it became more
difficult to get these signs some time ago - my question is, does anyone have
any idea what the going street rate for a stolen handicapped sign is nowadays?

[UC] Playing with divisive stereotypes

2008-02-17 Thread Glenn
All of the surveys about the hotel have the problems of internet surveys with
self-selected respondents. Or as Ray pointed out, selected computers.

But the DP survey is offensive and divisive! I want to clarify that point that
I brought up in my response to Ray.

First of all, the student population reading the DP does not have the
information to make an informed thoughtful opinion on the hotel project.
Consider the information given to the DP student readers. Without the
longer-term connections to this area and multiple sources of information, all
of their information about the hotel came from the DP stories.

They read the PR stuff fed to them by "the team" and then Thurs. they saw a
brief report about the overwhelming community opposition. The reporter's
coverage was generally good with a few minor mistakes. All of that is fine, but
a short news report cannot comprehensively give the important information for
the students to form an intelligent opinion about the relevant issues.

The DP then asked this question the next day for its poll: Should the
university power brokers respect the opinions, concerns, and neighborhoods of
local Philadelphians?

That was the real question being asked by the DP poll!

The likely student respondents (other than some of our local characters voting
1000 votes of support) were responding to that issue and not the hotel.
(Generally respondents to these surveys are those who feel strongly on both
sides of the question. The massive missing data from the population are the
majority in the middle)

Our neighbor, Magali, spoke very highly about students helping local residents
to get signatures on petitions. But some people hold stereotypes that Penn
students are elitist and snobbish. Also, around campus and to the student
population, there is a stereotype reinforced that locals are stupid and selfish
and incapable of seeing the brilliance in the superior visions of Penn experts.
We're dirty and dangerous obstructionists.

The DP poll, immediately after the Thurs article, is playing with that
stereotype. Do over 50% of Penn students believe in a plutocracy for
Philadelphia led by Penn trustees?

I'm not ready to make judgements about Penn students from a tiny sample and an
offensive survey. That DP poll was useless about the hotel, like all such
surveys, and extremely offensive for tugging at stereotypes.

It wasn't entertaining; it wasn't a useful survey, and it was tugging at
divisive stereotypes while questioning the right of locals to have a voice.

[UC] A pause in the debate for an important, if trashy, announcement

2008-02-17 Thread Krfapt
Now, a brief pause in the one-sided debate (everybody "against," nobody
"for") Lussenhop's Folly, to bring you an important announcement.

Monday is Presidents day. No trash pickup -- and it will be one day late the
rest of the week. Also, no mail, banks are closed, etc.

All right. Back to the debate. Where were we... I believe it was at Esaul
Sanchez' mendacity about Penn neither having any appropriate uses not enough
money to fix up the property it bought at 400 S 40th. One wonders how the Nobel
Laureates in the R.E. Dept at Penn came to the decision to buy property they
apparently now say they can't justify application- or dollar-wise. Oh, yes.
Economic rent seeking.

2008-02-17 Thread Glenn
"the R.E. Dept at Penn came to the decision to buy property they apparently now
say they can't justify application- or dollar-wise. Oh, yes. Economic rent
seeking."

It is economic rent seeking. The local process I see to accomplish these goals
is the creation of "iron triangles" or subgovernments.

I think the "iron triangle" concept explains the relationships being created
between the local special interests and city agencies as well as the use of
civic associations. It's the expedient method (what some at Penn would call
the corporate model for community engagement) to reach the goals of rent
seeking by shortchanging common citizens and democratic processes. I found the
following guidance for policymakers:

Guidance for Policymakers.
Ideally, policymakers are guided by core principles. Four examples follow.

1.. Politicians and public servants are accountable to the public.
2.. Elites, in politics and the private sector, do not have the right to
pursue their interests without constraints.
3.. Government bureaucratic and decision processes must be open, accessible,
and transparent, as well as being responsive to public concerns.
4.. Individuals and communities affected by projects have the right to
information regarding proposed developments; the right to challenge the need
for, and the design of, projects; and the right to be involved in planning and
decision-making processes.

"We endure their lifeless drone for several hours a

You could send them all to Penn Real Estate for jobs. They are always in
need of singers of lifeless drone!

Good luck!

When I mentioned the community service I've done I forgot that I also
currently volunteer at the Gay and Lesbian Archives of Philadelphia at
the William Way LGBT Community Center. We're usually there on Wednesday
nights. Our space is just above the rehearsal space for the Philadelphia
Gay Men's Chorus who, as Patrick Starr said, rehearse on Wednesday
nights. We endure their lifeless drone for several hours a week. When I
told one of my co-volunteers that Mr. Starr liked the Campus Inn project

[UC] Polling about the Proposed Hotel

2008-02-17 Thread Vincent/Roger
I am still curious about the results of the poll that Al Krigman proposed about
some weeks ago
Roger

Al wrote: I previously posted a questionnaire (see below -- not a poll or
survey) about reasons why opponents of the proposed Campus Inn were opposed to
the project.
A number of people, rightfully, jumped all over me for doing something for
opponents and not giving supporters of the project an opportunity to indicate
why they liked it, or undecided neighbors an way to note the questions they
think should be answered before they can make up their minds.
Admittedly, I'm not happy with the project as it's been presented to date.
However, in the interest of balance, I've prepared two additional
questionnaires to accommodate folks in the above two groups.
To register your sentiments, go to www.campus-inn.blogspot.com. You can access
any of the questionnaires with a click from there. If you're not sure which

[UC] Car broken into Baltimore Near Clavary ( 48th)

Just saw a car with a broken passenger side window. It was a black
volkswagon, jetta, or similar model. It had a yellow club on the
steering wheel. I saw the smashed glass in the curb next to the car.
Hope that this message finds the owner.

Re: [UC] Car broken into - Handicapped Sign stolen

2008-02-17 Thread Anthony West
An interesting question. Hmm ... it would get you some really great
parking spots in Center City and environs, oftentimes the only parking
places available for love or money. Without that sign, you'll lose your
license, or pay a lawyer $500 to talk your way out of that penalty for
you. So it should have some street value.
