[UC] Free wi-fi at 30t St Station

2010-04-11 Thread Al Airone
For those of you who like to take advantage of free wi-fi opportunities (like
me), Amtrak now offers free wi-fi within 30th St station. I'm not sure if this
is news to other folks - it is to me. I tried it using an Acer netbook
(Windows) and the response time was quite good. I was sitting at one of the
tables near the Dunkin' Donuts shop within the commercial area, not in the
waiting room itself.

Re: [UC] Second Census Form?

2010-04-01 Thread Al Airone
Ditto here. We sent our first one in last week and got a second one today,
same as other people have mentioned. The Commerce Dept is aggressively
trying to up the mail-in participation in order to reduce the amount of
door-to-door interviewing, and their spokespeople - including the Commerce
Secy - have been saying over the past few weeks that there will be multiple
mailings as part of that campaign.

[UC] Snow-shovelers

2009-12-20 Thread Al Airone
A family stopped by my house this morning asking to shovel our walk for pay.
They (a man in military khakis and his wife and daughter) did an excellent job,
even when I asked them to include my neighbors' sidewalk as part of the deal.
We got a completely clear 3-4' wide path along the sidewalk and our entire
front steps and walk right up to the top of the porch. If they ring your bell
and you still need your walk shoveled (or your car dug out!) I encourage anyone

2009-10-04 Thread Al Airone
AOL EmailHi, John - don't know if you're still looking, but I actually got a
battery replaced in a watch at the junk store on Baltimore Avenue near 49th -
I think it's what used to be a John's Bargain Store. Sorry I'm not being more
specific about the location, but I hope that's enough to find it. It's run by
an Oriental guy. He has a bunch of battery types and was able to find one to
match the one in my watch for just a couple of bucks.

If it's a really good watch (mine was a nothing-special Seiko) you might want
to continue looking.

Re: [UC] Tax penalties for the unconnected

2009-07-28 Thread Al Airone
Thanks, Ricky, for the reasoned response. I get tired of hearing the
stereotyped, generalized, and frankly irresponsible comments (Nobody knows
nothin at City Hall, City workers usually blow off citizens...). Besides
being myself a City worker, I am also a citizen - someone who has to deal with
the City and its bureaucracy in the same manner as any other citizen.

Like you, I am sure, I have no special connection when it comes to complaints
I have about City services, or expectations for any outcome from them. Like
you, I'm just another voice at the end of the phone or another civilian asking
a cop, a clerk, or a staffer for information or action. I often wish I had some
sort of Harry Potter mark on my forehead that would instantly get me
recognition and special service - turns out, it never works that way.
However, I do find that speaking courteously and reasonably during such
interactions, having all my facts available, and explaining my case in a firm
but non-hostile manner often manage to get the job done without any kind of
magic, pull, or bribery.

I've had good experiences and bad with City employees. The same can be said of
my experiences with British Airways, Dell Corporation, bank personnel,
tradesmen, and all kinds of others. Even if (and I don't have any scientific
evidence of this) there are more instances of rude or unhelpful behavior from
civil servants in general than from commercial workers in general, the numbers
don't, I'm sure, form a basis for the lazy hurling of vituperation that so
often takes place. If I said landlords just blow you off, or lawyers never
do nuthin, I would be just as guilty.

Reminds me of why so I've blocked many of the more frequent posters on this
list!

Thanks again for speaking up.

As a City employee, I feel the need to chime in, on both sides.

Mostly, I just want to ask that people be careful about making
generalizations about City employees. We're as varied as everyone else in every
other profession - in our work ethic, in our commitment to our jobs's missions,
in our abilities to do the jobs we were hired to do, and in the resources we
have with which to do our jobs (especially in tight economic times.)

There are some benefits to having a unionized, civil service position (which
is not true of all City jobs, including, I suspect, Marty's, plus many of our
jobs have been contracted out to non-City employees whose pay and benefits tend
to be much worse), at least for the person holding that position. It gives us a
fair amount of the job security that many others wish they had, and which more
of us should have. Of course, the downside for those we serve is that it can be
difficult, but not impossible, to get rid of ineffective or wrong-doing
employees. Also, we have good benefits in terms of health insurance and
pensions - from my point of view anyway. I used to be a waiter for many years,
without any such benefits. On the other hand, I hear and read of much better
benefits at some corporate jobs: matching 401K contributions, day care
allowances, annual bonuses, etc. My income is decent enough for my somewhat
laid back lifestyle, but well below what most of my college friends and
siblings now make.

I'd also like to remind everyone that we City employees are required to live
in the city, which cuts down our options (I'm dating someone from the 'burbs
who is reluctant to move into the city, so we haven't been able to work out the
possibility of ever living together), but which also means that there is an
added incentive to do our job well as we benefit from doing so just by living
here and also because, in doing our jobs, we're using our tax dollars that we
pay too.

I don't know anything as a City employee about any kind of program (or shady,
behind-the-scene means) that let's us not pay our taxes, park wherever we want,
get first dibs at this or that, get away without doing our jobs, or get any
kind of look-the-other-way slide when found to be doing something wrong or
illegal.

On the other hand, I do see plenty of inefficiences and incompetence. More or
less than in other large organizations? I don't know. As a test, I once mailed
something to my house from my office, using the City's mail system, not putting
it directly in a mailbox. It took 6 days (which included a weekend, but
still...). Mail from my mother in Massachusetts takes two days, sometimes only
one, to get to me.

I also recall, a handful of years ago, maybe it has improved since, that the
City was paying its vendors (including the foster parents I was working with
then, all of whom

Re: [UC] Re: [Ucneighbors] Tech Question: Changing Network Key onRouter

2009-05-11 Thread Al Airone
Both combinations have been used by Linksys. On my own device it was as John
said - username was blank, password was admin. Best way to be sure is check
online for the user manual for your particular model.

This all assumes you never changed the default username/password.

If you have - and the default combination no longer works - you can still
resolve the problem, although with a certain amount of pain: you can reset the
router to factory default (there's a little pinhole into which you insert a
straightened paper clip or something like that and hold it in for a short
period of time) - then you'll be able to log in using the default name/password
- SO MAKE SURE YOU KNOW THE CORRECT DEFAULT NAME/PASSWORD FIRST - but you'll
have to re-set every setting you modified, including re-entering a key both in
the router and on each computer that uses the router. Basically, you're back
to where you were when you first bought the router. Like I said - with some
pain.

[UC] Raccoons

2009-03-30 Thread Al Airone
Any neighbors of ours (SW corner of Springfield and 47th) awakened by fierce
yowling this morning can blame it on the three raccoons that were fighting in a
tree. Two of them had the third cornered at the very end of a high branch and
seemed to be trying to force it off the end. It fought back and since the
branch was narrow, only one of the attackers could approach at a time.
Eventually, and as the sun rose, the two attackers gave up and left. A while
afterward, so did the intended victim.

They were definitely raccoons - furry, banded tails, banded eyes. As the light
came up and with the aid of binoculars, I got a good look. I knew there were
raccoons in this area - I sincerely hope that's the entire population, or maybe
even included some intruders. Anybody have any idea where they nest?

Not sure 311 would be able to provide the info anyway - the trolleys are SEPTA,

a lot more to accomplish it (integration with an entirely separate public

I have to say I wouldn't call it deceptive advertising. OK, I have to say
when I saw the CD (it was in our Inquirer, too) I first thought it was an
advertisement for Liz Taylor's perfume, but once I started reading the copy,
I was pretty sure what it was: a free copy of a partisan film that otherwise
wouldn't get much play.

Radical Islam's War Against the West , an 'insider's view' of the hatred
the Radicals are teaching...and their goal of world domination. - I think
I've heard Dick Cheney use the same phrases. Heck, even the fact that they
capitalize Radicals - like they're a formalized national state, or at
least a single organization with a logo and a membership card - advertises
that this is a highly political and highly partisan effort, relying on
rhetoric and media-savvy communications techniques rather than, say, actual
content.

Hey, that's it - I would have to say this type of CD is __sort__ of like an
educational campaign, except that with an educational campaign you have
actual __content__.

Yes, the radical right producers of this thing are hiding behind a URL
instead of coming right out and saying, Brought to you by the same people
who brought the Swiftboat lies, but we can't expect them to make it that
easy.

My Sunday Inquirer included two DVDs called Obsession.

At first glance it looked as if it were some type of action film.

However, it is a product of The Clarion Fund a non-profit,
non-partisan

organization for national security through education. Its focus? Radical
Islam.

http://clarionfund.org/

Although quite subtle in its presentation there are references to Who
Will

Be Able To Lead Our Country?, it raises questions

Yesterday, there was an article under Recent News on their sister site:
http://www.radicalislam.org, by the way it was removed today, stating the
DNC had given a platform to a woman who has ties to Radical Muslims and
allowed her to make a Keynote Speech.

First, I wish to state I believe The Clarion Fund has every right to
advertise in newspapers. My beef is they should be up front with who they
are and what they do instead of masquerading as a motion picture.

It seems it seeks to cloak scare tactics in a veil of education and give a
perfunctory appearance of fairness in discussing other sects of Islam.

My gut feeling is the timing during the Holy month of Ramadan, the
Presidential Campaign with a candidate that has a Muslim name is by
subliminal design an effort to connect said candidate with radical Islam.

This deceptive advertising at best and an attempt at indoctrination of
those

who do not know better nor care to research their findings.

A slipper slope.

[UC] Car broken into - Handicapped Sign stolen

Likewise to Tony West for the reminder that hauling trash is one of your
generally less likeable jobs. There's a limit on how much each receptacle
should weigh:

ALL HOLIDAYS:
Trash and recycling collection will be one day behind schedule for the

KNOW WEEKLY LIMITS ON THE AMOUNT OF TRASH
Each household is allowed a maximum of (6) - 32-gallon receptacles or (12) -
30x37 bags of trash each week. The weight limit for a bag or can is 40
lbs. The Total weight should not exceed 240 lbs.

This is something I try to watch out for on weeks when we've generated a
particular large amount of trash - rearranging the load in each can or
otherwise redistributing it.

up for 10 PM 8/1/07 through 2 AM 8/2/07 for the 18th District under any of the
four categories except Accident (one entry, 54th and Walnut). I'd give it a
couple of days, it's possible not everything's been added yet (how likely is it
that the only thing that required a written report in the entire 18th District
for four hours was one car accident?). Word of caution: in any event, this is
negative info - it says what's not there, not what is: that there was no
report, not that there was no incident (if you catch my double negatives).

This is either about serious unsolved crime right here and unacceptable

I will not again forward information for you to share with the civil

Re: [UC] Verizon High-Speed

2007-08-01 Thread Al Airone
We've been using Verizon DSL for about 8 months. We switched from Comcast
because cable was just a lot more expensive (DSL will still be cheaper even
if Verizon adds $10 after the first year).

The rate of 3000 (kilobits/sec) that was quoted is, I believe, part of the
Power Plan, which starts at $19.99 and will go up to $29.99 after 6
months. That's the one that offers speeds of up to 3000. We're using the
Starter plan (up to 768 kilobits/sec), at $14.99 for the first 12 months
(and no definite indication of an increase thereafter). The speed is, to
me, comparable to what we had with cable, and we're happy with it.

Service? We've only had to contact them during one event - a period of
about three weeks when our speed dropped precipitously for a day or two at a
time, then shot back to normal (around 700 kbps) for about 3-4 days, then
the whole thing happened again - several times. I did get the scripted
response - nothing the tech guy (yes, he was Indian) suggested worked,
although he was quite competent. I asked for (and got) escalated support.
They sent me a replacement modem - but it also didn't solve the problem, and
I sent it back, no charge (they paid for return shipment). To make it short,
no one ever discovered the cause of the problem, and it vanished after three
weeks and never came back. Been fine for the past 2 months.

I have Verizon DSL and have helped many people in the area with either
Cable or DSL Configurations.

At this point in time I prefer Verizon DSL over Cable internet because
I have found that Verizon is generally easier to configure -
especially if you use a router. In my experience Verizon is also less
likely to change the names of their servers or block access to
specific types of software like network file sharing or corporate
email accounts.

When the $50.00 modem has failed in the past we have just exchanged it
for a new one.

Verizon has reimbursed me for poor service and if there is an issue
with the phone line itself that prevents you from accessing voice and
DSL that the PUC will step in and help.

Verizon sometimes gives free speed upgrades so once the service is
established you can call customer service and ask them to upgrade the
speed of your connection. I think my current speed is 3,000 which is
very nice.

Yes, it's 14.99/month for a 1-year contact, but around 10-12 months

send you a quote of what your rate will go up to. They call it a

If you don't like it, you do not sign up for another year, and the

is now 37.99/month.

Or, to terminate entirely, it's $79.

And the modem costs around $50.

Has anyone had experience with them?

How's the Tech Support? (I heard 1 nightmare story)

They say they have software that will automatically forwards your old

Input, please?

I totally disagree Frank, unless the out in public you refer to is
other e-communication systems. I think 85% of the problem is that e-mail frees
many people of normal social constraints. People will e-attack when they would
never do so in person, or not in the same inappropriate manner. I also think
sometimes people can write in a manner that sounds more harsh than they intend
or realize, especially since there are no visual cues to the contrary as would
be the case in a face to face.

Re: [UC] Street work

2007-06-17 Thread Al Airone
Maybe I'm confused about this, but aren't local property owners responsible
for the condition of their sidewalks? Not the City? In other words, I don't
think the City can decide to repave sidewalks, except on property it owns,
such as City Hall, parks, bridges, etc. Perhaps the stretch of 43rd St
along side Clark Park would qualify, but most of the other torn-up areas
wouldn't.

I think they did the finish work on at least the first block below
Baltimore several days ago, at least the jack hammer part.

I saw a contractor staple a sign on a little tree on 4600 Hazel.
The big question is, why are they repaving in the first place? If they
really wanted to spend money for improvements, how about redoing the
sidewalks instead?

I spoke with the contractor who's been ripping up our streets. He said
they will be finished with 46th North of Baltimore today and will begin
again on 46th South of Baltimore on Monday. He asked that people don't
park on 46th South of Baltimore next week. I did not clarify with him
whether they are finished with all streets North of Baltimore or just
46th.
I also brought up the issue of stapling signs to trees. He said he used to
work with an arborist and was told that stapling signs to large trees does
not harm the trees but stapling signs to small trees is a problem. Thus
he's been having his crew not staple signs to small trees. I pointed out
to him that whether he's right or not (I'm no expert so I have no idea),
many of the neighbors are upset over the stapling of signs to any sized
tree. He understands and said he will ask his crew to not staple signs to
any trees.
He also pointed out that his contract is to just rip up the street. The
city is apparently responsible for the repaving. Thus in the near future
we can expect the city to come through, put up new signs, and then pave.

Please spread the word about the SOBA stretch of 46th
Take care, Doc

[UC] GRPs (comment on an article in the Inquirer this morning)

2007-05-03 Thread Al Airone
From this morning's Inquirer:

Any discussion of the campaign seems to go back to Knox's cash. He has spent
more on the tube - an estimated $6 million since December - than his rivals put
together.

That's about 16,000 GRPs, meaning a typical viewer in the Philadelphia TV
market will have seen a Knox ad at least 160 times.

Forget for a moment the politics of money - I'm sure I haven't seen a Knox ad
160 times - it's been closer to 15-20. So what are the legitimate conclusions
we can draw -

(1) I'm not a typical TV watcher ?(woo-hoo!)

(2) the GRP concept itself is faulty? (I don't know much about it but I
wouldn't be surprised to find it's pseudo-science)

   (3) Whoever they define as typical people watch wa-a-a-y more TV than makes
sense?

I'm opting for all three being true. Opinions, anyone?

Ross - don't know if this helps in your case, but -

you can print out anything that's on the screen by pressing the PrintScreen
button (which simply puts the contents of the screen into the clipboard) then
pasting the clipboard into the app of your choice (Word works fine). If the
list is real long, it may take two or three such screen shots. Apologies if
you already knew this. (Also assumes you're using Windows)

Probably most people already know this, but in case you didn't -

There will be a total lunar eclipse tomorrow evening (Saturday)
which will begin around 5:45 pm. The moon will be full and should already be
over the horizon at that point.
