Enough already. After everything he's done, who wouldn't give John Fenton
the benefit of the doubt?

That's my .02 (and then ducking for cover like a deer in Woodland Cemetery).

Note to Channel 6: if you want to try to make a mountain out of a molehill,
at least get the names right. Anyone else notice that the candidate's name

[UC] Jannie Blackwell supports John Fenton, and so do I

2007-06-07 Thread Karen Heenan
I was glad to hear that Councilwoman Blackwell stood up at the meeting this
morning in support of John Fenton. This issue has led to so much wholesale
UCD bashing that the important thing – John himself, and the work he does –
has gotten a little bit lost in the shuffle. That’s a shame because almost
everyone in this neighborhood, whether or not they like UCD, likes him.
Here we have a man who everyone can agree on does a good job and is popular
in the community (perhaps part of the problem?), sitting around wasting his
talents and energy while the UCD investigates itself.

Four years ago, not long before I met John Fenton, my house and I were
assaulted by a homeless man named Chris who used to hang around 45th Street.
Chris who would occasionally ring the doorbell, sometimes throw bottles at
the porch, keep everyone on the street awake at night with his yelling, and
once, memorably, smashed my plate glass front door with me standing right
there behind it.

There were many people in the neighborhood who helped and supported me at
that time, including the UCD ambassadors who showed up first, the police,
and Brian Siano with a 1 a.m. emergency plywood delivery, but John Fenton
was the man who went with me to court and had his ambassadors keep a lookout
for Chris on my block when he was released from prison. John did all this
willingly and without my asking him to do it. That is above and beyond what
UCD pays him for, and that is why he’s so valuable to this community.

I hope that UCD sees by this email, and by anything else you all choose to
add, that in addition to damaging John Fenton by this suspension, they are
hurting themselves and the rest of the community.

Been there, done that. I've always had people picking roses off my front
fence, though last summer I had a first -- a young man rang my doorbell at
around 7:00 p.m., asking if I would cut a few roses for him. Apparently he
was late for his (first) date and wanted to try to make up for his lateness

At least he asked.

Walking up to my house I discovered a young man standing in my front
yard, ripping the last of the roses from my rose bush and handing them
down to a young lady on the sidewalk.

"Would you like a pair of scissors?" I asked.

"No thanks," he said, "We've got them all."

Young love!

[UC] Yet more fun in the hood

2007-06-20 Thread Karen Heenan
Lest anyone think that our recent crime wave is even somewhat over, think
again. I just heard from a friend who lives on the 4400 block of Osage, and
while she was sitting at home on Monday night watching TV, someone threw a
rock through her 2nd floor living room window. She’s okay except for having
the crap scared out of her and the financial hit of having to get the window
fixed. The police who came out said that a few cars had been hit on her
block, too, but apparently hers was the only house that was bothered.

[UC] clothing donation

2007-09-21 Thread Karen Heenan
I did a massive closet clean-out the other night, and now have 5 bags of
clothes sitting in my living room. Some are older and some are casual, but
most are work clothes that I’ve either shape-shifted out of or gotten tired
of. I could take them to 2nd Mile – that would be easiest, since they’re
down the block – but I’d like to pass them on to someone who really needs
them, rather than see them on the racks at 2nd Mile and regret my efficiency
and re-purchase some. If someone can recommend a shelter or women’s
organization that needs work clothes, I’d appreciate it. I know such an
organization exists, I just can’t remember the name right now.

Thanks.

I spoke to someone who works at the Other Green Line this morning.
Apparently they are going to be moving to 45th Street, opening in January.
He didn't know a lot, other than the time frame, but said he also believed
there was going to be an expanded menu at the new location. Considering
that we had to sit outside on the damp metal seats, I'll be happy for
expanded seating at the new location.

RE: [UC] Date of PHC's Architectural Committee meeting

2007-10-19 Thread Karen Heenan

Just as an addition to Al’s email regarding the PHC meeting, for those who
are unable to attend the meeting but still want to make their feelings known
on the subject of the hotel, you can forward letters to:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I live on a pretty commercial block, and most of the time it doesn’t bother
me, but commercial on my block means the 2nd Mile, Saad’s and Abyssinia, not
a 10-story hotel. There's nothing wrong with the hotel idea, per se, it's
just that particular location doesn’t suit the purpose and also the fact
that there’s been no real community discussion about it before it’s come to
hearing. Think how different your home would be if suddenly there was a 10
story building between you and the sun. It would change your interior
light, your garden, if you have one, there would certainly be some privacy
issues, and there would be a ton more foot traffic and parking problems
(even if Penn does provide valet service from one of their garages, not all
guests will take advantage of that; some will park on the street, decreasing
our parking spaces even more).

Since this isn't the "nice" listserv (where the hotel hasn't even been
mentioned), feel free to throw rocks, emails or opinions.

[UC] 40th Street Hotel letter - an interesting reply

2007-10-21 Thread Karen Heenan

I emailed a letter to the PHC on Friday setting forth my feelings about the
proposed hotel. On Friday evening, at 6:14, I got a response. Not from
anyone at the PHC, but from Tom Lussenhop, our "friendly neighborhood hotel
developer." I didn't send my letter to Mr. Lussenhop, and while I cc'd my
letter to the SHCA zoning committee, that letter went out by snail mail, so
he didn't get it from them.

I'm curious how he got a copy of my letter within 5 hours of my sending it
to someone other than him. Maybe it's me, but I don't think that it's
appropriate for the PHC to forward letters from residents to Mr. Lussenhop
prior to the hearing - isn't that giving him advance opportunity to respond
to any comments we may have?

Also, the letter ended up in my junk mail folder, and when I clicked "not
junk," MSN asked it I wanted to add that mailing list to my safe lists.
Apparently my response was one of many that Mr. Lussenhop sent out that day.

[UC] Found Cat - 45th & Locust Streets

2007-11-05 Thread Karen Heenan
This morning I found a cat on my front sidewalk. He ran up onto my porch
and then ran next door and started scratching at their door. I checked with
the neighbors but he’s not theirs, though they have taken him in at least
temporarily.

He’s medium-gray, long-haired, neutered and fairly young (I’d say no more
than 1-2 years). Fluffy tail, very friendly, and very very clean, which is
why I’m assuming he’s gotten away from someone.

If this is your cat, give me a call at (215) 870-8356. I don’t get to check
email often during the day.

I know this is a topic that has been covered a few times on the list, but for

[UC] Any packrats out there?

2008-09-21 Thread Karen Heenan
I found out during the recent rains that my back shed had developed a nasty
leak. Richard Marks fixed the roof for me, and today I tore out the damp and
moldy drywall ceiling and the more damp and moldy insulation above it. I now
have a decent-sized opening in my shed ceiling.

Question for all you home-repair packrats out there: does anyone have any
leftover drywall or pink insulation hanging out in the basement or the attic
that they're not going to use? We could get carshare and go over to Home
Depot, but since this is such a small area (3' x 6'), I was hoping that I could
help a neighbor get rid of something that was too good to throw away but that
you're not using. I never get rid of anything useful after I'm done a project,
but of course I've managed not to have anything that I need on hand before I
ripped out the ceiling.

Please email me off-list or call (215) 870-8356.

[UC] crime in the Hood

2008-12-01 Thread Karen Heenan

As far as I know, this information was only posted to the other list, but it's
the kind of info everyone needs - but doesn't want - to hear:

It's shocking to hear, but one of our friends was kidnapped coming home from
the art opening at Abbraccio on the 21st about 10 pm. Two young men accosted
him at the corner of 49th and Pine and began beating him while a third pulled
up in a car, they forced him into the car, robbed him, drove him around and
eventually decided to dump him, battered though alive, in northwest Philly.
Unfortunately he was able to provide a good description of neither his
assailants nor their vehicle to the police, other than that they seemed to be
of high school age.As things seem to be getting better around here, the mugging
on Walnut, the one on Warrington and things like this appear to remind us that
we still live in a dangerous place. Just an alert to keep your head up and keep
an eye on the street, keep a look out for your neighbors and people behaving
suspiciously (like forcing someone into a car). These people are still out
there. AND ALSO THIS:
On the tail of this, a neighbor reported this morning that a young
boy, probably pre-high school, assaulted him at the 46th street stop as hewas
getting out of the train yesterday. It involved a quick punch to theback of the
head and much pointing and laughing as the train drove off. This is what passes
for fun in a household with no game console Isuppose. I imagine Darwin will
take care of many of these people, but it's ashame that others have to suffer
through this behavior.

I saw that in the UC Review last week. So if that's the case, can we just
steal John Fenton back from Jannie Blackwell's office so that the "clean and

Apparently, some people haven't heard that Wendell Lewis is leavingTo:
UnivCity@list.purple.com
Apparently, some people in the area have not heard that Wendell Lewis is
leaving UCD (and the neighborhood) when the current term of his contract
expires in June 2009. Do you think:

He was worried that the Campus Inn would go through and lower the value of his
house even more than the recession, so he thought he'd better get out while the
getting was still good.
The string pullers at Penn finally realized that all the non-core activities at
UCD were not only wastes of money but among the chief reasons why the
organization is so unpopular and why the NID attempt failed so badly, so they
decided to rebuild the organization in a "leaner, meaner" form with a real
operations guy to manage "clean and safe" cost-effectively instead of an empire
builder to install expensive flags on poles along Baltimore Avenue.
Wendell really wants to move back to New York and live in his condo, like he
was quoted as saying in The UCReview, so his children could get the benefit of
a better private school than he could find in Philadelphia.
He can make more money as a consultant (maybe team up with Omar Blaik, who
undoubtedly has more work than he can handle teaching other urban universities
all about the Penn Model... whether as something to follow or something to
avoid is not known).
Other.
All of the above.

[UC] Burglary on 45th Street

2009-06-10 Thread Karen Heenan

My next door neighbor rang my bell last night and asked if I'd seen anything
suspicious around his apartment earlier that day. I had just gotten in from
work, so I hadn't but apparently his apartment had been robbed.

The burglars came in through a small back window that had a fan in it. They
took TVs, laptops, all the usual goodies.

They must have taken it all out the back of the alley and through the karate
school parking lot because there's no way that much stuff could be moved on
45th Street with the laundromat, 2 bars and the 2nd Mile people all hanging on
the sidewalk for most of the day.

The police came but said there wasn't a lot they could do. Luckily my
neighbors have renters' insurance, so most of what was lost was covered. And
they and their cats are safe, just freaked out because the burglary happened
during a very limited period when no one was home (between 3:00 and 5:00), so
either the burglars got lucky or someone had been watching their apartment.

I'm just passing on what happened and reminding everyone that if you have a fan
or air conditioner in a first floor window, to attach it to the frame so it
can't be easily pushed in. Or get apartment bars that can go across the front
of the unit and prevent access.

[UC] Septa Strike

2009-11-03 Thread Karen Heenan

Okay, so we've all probably figured out by now that Septa's done it again. I
wish I'd found out before I'd gone and voted and then ended up standing on the
corner of Spruce Street trying to hail a cab.

Here's the question: Who in the hood is going my way? I work right across from
City Hall, 9:00-5:00 but with flexibility for the strike. If anybody's
driving, I'll pay my way; otherwise, anyone who wants to share a cab, please
email me off list and maybe we can set something up.

Thanks.

[UC] Stained Glass Alert

2010-02-05 Thread Karen Heenan

Walking to work this morning I saw an old stained glass window at 46th & Walnut
Streets (N.E. corner just past the convenience store). It was in fairly rough
shape, with some broken pieces, but if I hadn't been going the wrong way I
probably would have picked it up.

Thought it might come in handy for someone who would use the intact pieces for
repairs. It was a very pretty window once upon a time.

since you're paying the alarm fees to the alarm company, rather than the
police department, perhaps the alarm company should send a guy out to your
househmactually, maybe the alarm companies should give UCD a kick
back and then call UCD as well as the police. i suspect a guy in yellow
could arrive quicker than the police and might help to mitigate any
potential problems before the police arrive. this could also be another
way for UCD to get money.

even told the police officers to look in the back yard, since it was my

Having the police come over after an hour when an alarm goes off is
terrible. Why do we pay those alarm fees every year if not for a quick

When you call 911, it helps to speed up the response time if you report

Gail - you don't want to know what they learn for everyday. A friend just
graduated this past spring, and she's been neutering neighborhood stray cats
because she only did one female spay during her years at Penn, and had never
neutered a male. She was told she could "get that from the books."
Interesting, since I would think that's the biggest part of a normal vet's
practice.

Well, 'scuze me. Makes me wonder how the hell these poor student learn the
everyday ins-in-out of small animal care. Not every vet visit is something
exotic, requiring an MRI and kidney transplant.

While not a lot got done on my block (my fault, for trying to be in two

afternoon. The UC Garden Club also scheduled a cleanup at the Locust Street
community garden for Saturday, and John Fenton and his crew picked up a huge
pile of leaf and trash bags from the corner of 44th & Locust. They might
not catch every bag on every corner, but they were out all day Saturday and
Sunday picking up trash – which is more than you can say for the City of
Philadelphia. Or most of my neighbors, none of whom have ever come out for
a block cleanup.

My two cents on the subject.

he said "Oh, they must be at my car" and took off.
I'm not sure if he's just hoping to get $20 from someone or,

He looks to be mid to late 20's, about five five, white, very

I wouldn't recommend UPenn for standard cat care - they get really pricy,

Does anyone have any thoughts about the UPenn Vet Hospital, particularly
when
it comes to cat care?

I took Scrunch the Cat to a local vet for some dental work yesterday, and
today I
have some problems and questions, and his local vet is not open on
Thursdays.
I like the vet, but this limited access really bothers me. They also
insisted I give
him this antibiotic that has to be shot down his throat instead of crumbled
in his
food - instead of Amoxicilin, which can be crumbled in his food. I knew
that I
would not be able to use the pill gun, and I told them that, but they
insisted that
I take the other medication. I left the vet a message today informing them
that I
was going to come and *get* the Amoxicilin on Friday.

I called UPenn and they gave me some information. Also, they are close
by. I am
thinking about transferring him there. Does anyone know the pros and cons?

RE: [UC] Clark Park, Baltimore Ave, Stolen History, UCD, etc

2005-04-21 Thread Karen Heenan
I think the state of the neighborhood after this weekend - including
Baltimore Avenue and the park - is one more thing we can blame on Penn -
wasn't it Hay Day or whatever they call it? There was much festivity going
on around Walnut Street, and I saw roaming bands of college kids in silly
hats heading toward the the park in the afternoon, strewing beer cans in
their wake. The little darlings.

I may not live on Kyle's block, but I'm near Abyssinia and the Watutsi Pub,
so I'm used to cleaning up bottles in my front yard. For some reason,
though, it really irks me when the Penn kids treat the neighborhood as their
personal dumping ground. I think I'm just getting cranky.

I must admit when I was at the park I too was surprised by the amount of
trash and debris. I though, clearly this is from the good weather and the
increased number of visitors . . . that was last week. Unfortunately, I
have to admit, it hasn't improved - there are overflowing cans, trash lying
about . . .

Re: Thriftway a casualty of Fresh Grocer?

2001-08-07 Thread Karen Heenan

Okay, fine, so the Thriftway is grubby, badly stocked and more than a little
twilight-zonish. It's also convenient, which is something that UCity is
sorely lacking these days. I don't want to have to walk all the way down to
the Fresh Grocer for things I could walk two blocks to buy. It's bad enough
we lost the convenience store at 40th & Locust, with the nearest Wawa being
at 38th & Spruce. That seems much further when you're in the grip of a
craving.

Fresh Grocer is bright, clean and open all night. Yes, it is. And how many
of us want to walk through the neighborhood, improving though it may be, all
night? The Thriftway is open until 1 a.m., and that's already later than I
want to be walking around, carrying bags and looking like a target.

Most of the conveniences of the Fresh Grocer don't apply to me, and don't
apply to a lot of other residents of the neighborhood, either. Whether or
not it was intended this way, Fresh Grocer comes off as aimed at more
"upscale" residents, and "upscale" at this point is still outnumbered by
"downscale" and "midscale."

Here's hoping that there are new owners, and that they clean the place up
and let us have a choice of where to shop.

RE: Inconsiderate & Loud Neighbors

2001-08-21 Thread Karen Heenan

There's a lot of this going around.

The house next door to mine is apartments. Four are regular apartments,
with tenants I've hardly ever seen, much less heard, and two are apartments
that the realtor fills with Travelers Aid families. I have nothing against
transitional housing, but it seems that every family they put into these
apartments rapidly becomes a problem. The mother of first family used to
put her children outside at night while she partied. In the winter.

I called Travelers Aid rather than DHS or the police when the mother of the
second family left her four children (ages 2-10) unsupervised every night
while she went to work. Needless to say, they never slept. Their case
worker at Travelers Aid commented that perhaps this was why the children
were "sluggish" when they were picked up for camp every morning. They
should have been unconscious, since they were up until at least five in the
morning.

That has gotten better, but now the another family on the third floor is the
issue. First their doorbell didn't work, and their guests had no option (!)
but to yell up to them from the alley. (There's a pay phone across the
street). Now the bell is fixed, but their friends and family still find it
easier to stand in the alley, under my windows, and scream to be let in.
Considering that most of them are yelling "Mom," I can't imagine why they
don't have keys.

Talking to the realtor only does so much - he refers me to Travelers Aid,
says he can't do anything with the families. Travelers Aid has improved
things, but it's just so frustrating, trying to talk to the people
themselves just gets you a blank look, as if you're criticizing them
unfairly for thinking that leaving children alone, or yelling up at windows
at 2:30 a.m. is unreasonable.

I like peace, and I like my sleep. I don't want to think about what the
electric bills are going to be like, because my roommate and I have been
running the air conditioners just to get peace at night.

Sorry about that, needed to vent.

2004-04-28 Thread Karen Heenan
Sunburst Realty is another name for Rigdon Miller, also known as Moondance
Partners, which changed into Urban Shelter shortly before filing for
bankruptcy earlier this year. I'm not certain, but I think some of their
Sansom Street properties were sold befoe the bankruptcy and the City's
website just hasn't been updated - the house next door to mine sold two
years ago and the website still lists the prior owner.

A search of the BRT Property lists this as the developer:
SUNBURST REALTY L P
1936 SPRUCE ST
PHILADELPHIA, PA 19103-6613
I counted 10 properties in the 4400 block of Sansom. They purchased 7 of
the 10 in November 1999 for $537K, which itself is pretty amazing, since
the area in 1999 was prettytough.

http://brtweb.phila.gov/disclaimer.aspx?st=ad
is where I got my information. It's got a great wealth of information on
property in Philly.

Gail
Someone asked the names of the developers, and Greg claimed not to know.
If you find this hard to believe, you haven't dealt much with the clique
that used to get away with the pretense of representing "the community"
hereabouts. The discussion about the developers, though, led me to form
the personal opinion -- and I could be wrong, it's been known to happen --
that these non-local developers ("absentee developers," Neil?) haven't a
clue about such things as the Alexander School catchment area, the produce
trucks that park at 44th & Sansom every day and have huge popular support,
the locus of Mill Creek (not the Tavern, the watercourse), or the
eagerness with which rich folks will buy pricey homes next door to
properties that are boarded up and whose destiny is fraught with
uncertainty.

Almost every week, I try to watch the kids go by around school dismissal.
(when I am around) I put up a brick border deep in the ground around my
street tree and other bulbs and plants to protect them. One day actually
saw
a kid of maybe 6 years old pick up one of the bricks and threaten another
kid with it. Where were these kids parents or guardians? I luckily told the
kid put that down, and put it back where you found it. What happens when
I'm
not around? I wonder. I fix my bricks almost every week because people like
to step on them? I highly doubt squirels, but I am not leaving them out of
the picture.

I guess the trick is to plant flowers that are not single (like tulips and
daffodils). And so that they are not accessible to pedestrians. Plant a
holly or a rose bush, that'll teach them!

[UC] Multi-alarm fire at 45th and Walnut

2011-02-18 Thread Karen Heenan

I spoke to Alan at Monarch Hardware this a.m. L&I and fire dept. officials
were there to look at the buildling. According to him, the apartments upstairs
are pretty much a loss. Saad sustained at least water damage, and the hardware
store smells badly of smoke but nothing worse than that. He wasn't sure of the
extent of damage yet, but said that as far as he knew, everyone got out safely
(though we did see one person being wheeled on a gurney toward an ambulance at
45th & Locust). I was told last night that firemen did remove some animals
from the building, so hopefully this time all the people and all the animals
made it out okay.

RE: [UC] Citypaper article: school vouchers & the campaign against Jim Roebuck

2012-04-12 Thread Karen Heenan

Melani - there are way more racial connotations to this campaign than that. I
hadn't mentioned it on the listserv prior to this, but Felicia Muhammad's
campaign workers were doing voter registration and handing out flyers for about
a week before we'd even started to hear about her campaign. I go through that
station every morning and evening and thought it was odd that no one had ever
approached me. When I saw that people coming down the stairs ahead of me one
evening were being offered flyers, I put my hand out for one to see what it was
about, and was told by the campaign worker, "We don't need your white ass."

As far as I can tell, I'm a voter. And up until that point, I was a voter
whose opinion was open to being changed. A candidate can't necessarily be held
accountable for what her workers say, but if she's making inferences
personally, it makes a difference.

I just found this new Citypaper article about school vouchers and the campaign
against our State Rep. Jim Roebuck. As Tony West has told us in the past,
follow the money! Be sure to read down to the end, where the opponent's
campaign helpers' relationship to Anthony Williams is explained:

http://www.citypaper.net/news/2012-04-12-corporate-money-school-vouchers-philadelphia.html

Also, I was at a Roebuck meeting yesterday, and they have a copy of his
opponent's voter registration application. She didn't even register to vote in
the 188th district till February 15th! So much for her dedication to the
neighborhood.

Further, one woman at yesterday's meeting said that Ms. Muhammad came to her
door & talked to her daughter to ask for her daughter's vote. Ms. Muhammad
told the daughter that Jim Roebuck "moved his [state rep] office from West
Philadelphia to University City." This is an absolutely ridiculous accusation
since he moved from 4800 Baltimore to 4712 Baltimore - HALF A BLOCK! And the
move was necessitated by the sale of the 4800 Baltimore building to a new owner
(ME) who wanted to put a restaurant in the 4800 Baltimore space - it wasn't
even his choice to move! He lost his lease! But that kind of insinuation,
trying to differentiate between West Philadelphia & University City, seems to
have racial connotations. It's a very unpleasant tactic. And that's being
stated by the candidate herself - not some supporter, where the candidate could
say that she didn't know exactly what they were saying.

Another recommendation for John Kline. He found a leak in my side bay window
that had been leaking for 10 years. He was out this morning to fix my shed
gutters - and they're fixed. I recommended him to a co-worker with a
persistent leak and after spending 45 minutes on ladders exploring every
possibility, John told him it wasn't his roof, it was a stucco problem.
He takes a little while to call back, depending on how busy he is, but he'll
call. If it's urgent, make sure you say it is and you'll hear from him.

[UC] Embroidery and Sewing Classes

2012-07-19 Thread Karen Heenan

Here's a question for my crafty or wannabe-crafty neighbors. I'm trying to get
together a class on free style embroidery at the UC Arts League for their fall
term. They haven't done a lot of textile classes in recent years, so I'm
reaching out to the lists to pass on the info to those who might be interested.

Free style embroidery is (more or less) what grandma used to do, with colored
threads and a hoop. But it's a lot more than dresser scarves and doilies - you
can use free templates from the internet, draw your own designs or even use
tattoo flash to embellish your clothing (or your kids’ clothes), decorate
linens, make gifts, wall art, etc. Embroidery has a long history throughout
the world, and we'd be going over some of the diverse applications of
threadwork in different cultures, some of which are represented in our
neighborhood.

Embroidery is a great creative outlet, and despite how nit-picky it can look,
it’s very relaxing to do. It’s also portable, so those of you who are
non-knitters can finally have a project in your hands when all your friends
pick up their needles.

Class would be open to adults and older teens. If there's enough interest, a
beginner kit with hoop, needles and 10 basic floss colors would be provided.

Please pass this along to anyone you think might have an interest in the class.
They can email me at stitchcraft.phi...@gmail.com or you can just reply to
this email. I want to test the waters and let UCAL know how much interest is
out there.

Also, I'll be starting basic sewing workshops at my house in the fall. Please
contact me for details if there is any interest there, as well.

Thanks!

Locust and the engines went by pretty close. I don't hear anything now, but
the smoky smell is still blowing this way.

[UC] Shop Local this Holiday Season

2013-12-11 Thread Karen Heenan
I haven't seen it mentioned on the listservs yet, so here goes: It's time for
the University City Arts League's annual Holiday Craft Show. The show runs
until December 22nd. Hours are 12-6 on Saturday/Sunday, and 3-8 on weekdays.
The Arts League is located at 4226 Spruce Street.
The holidays are coming whether we're ready or not. Might as well support a
neighborhood institution and knock a few gifts off your list while you're at it.

[UC] Dryer Repair

2014-04-09 Thread Karen Heenan
I know this has been asked and answered a dozen times, and I'm pretty sure I
kept the response filed away somewhere, but I can't find it and my dryer has
decided to act up. It spins just fine, but it's ice cold. The timing is also
shot, so I'd like to have someone look at it and tell me whether it's worth
fixing at this point.
Thanks!

[UC] Plumber recommendation

2014-12-29 Thread Karen Heenan
Any plumber recommendations in West Philly that aren't Goffredo? Getting tired
of being judged by a contractor because I didn't buy top of the line fixtures.
Thanks!

[UC] For Sale: Four Poster Bed

2015-02-26 Thread Karen Heenan
We're rearranging the house and don't have room for this beauty anymore. It's
a 1930s double bed frame, veneer in very nice condition. Headboard, footboard,
side rails, 4 slats (2 old, 2 new). Asking $100. Mattress and box spring
thrown in if you want them.
It's the kind of piece that works well in our old houses, just not in ours
anymore.

If interested, you can contact me by email and just skip the Craiglist part.

[UC] Chalkboard paint

2015-05-23 Thread Karen Heenan
I'm putting this out here in the hopes that someone has some chalkboard paint
leftover from a project. I need literally about a half cup of paint for a
project, and while Monarch Hardware does have the paint, it's $15 for a quart,
most of which will then sit in my basement for the next 10 years. I'm hoping
that someone else has some remnants left that they would be willing to give --
or sell cheaply -- to a neighbor in need. You can email me directly or call
215-870-8356.
Thanks!

[UC] Re: [UCNeighbors] Scammers at your door....

2016-02-16 Thread Karen Heenan
Linda, I did actually contact Joe Murray at the PPD about this guy. He hasn't
gotten back to me, but he said there was a similar occurrence last year with
contractors hired by a utility to knock on doors. So these guys may well be
legit, but they still have no customer relations skills.

The guy who came to my house was young, probably early twenties,
African-American, wearing a Verizon jacket but no other ID, a clipboard and
some brochures and that was it. He wasn't good at taking no for an answer, and
actually came back a second time. The main reason I decided he was legit,
instead of a scam, or that he didn't take his earbuds out the entire time he
was trying to sell me something. That strikes me totally as a bored independent
contractor just doing what he's paid to do.

Kyle, Karen, any description of the guy from yesterday?

A guy just worked our block (on 43rd), claiming (to me, at least) to be with
PECO, saying I was in violation of something -- I'm not -- that I hadn't dealt
with. He too was persistent when I said I couldn't talk with him. Told him it
was bs and he scribbled in his tiny notebook and said that was going on my
record. I asked him his name and for his ID and he mumbled and went to my
neighbor's porch. I went outside to watch him go up the rest of the block. He
knocked on all the doors, and just one other person answered and sent him away.

He was dark-skinned AfAm, maybe 30s/older, a little stocky, maybe 5'10", no
uniform or badge, black (nylon?) jacket, black cap, dark slacks, little spiral
notebook.

If someone says they represent a utility or known company and won't produce an
ID (real or fake), there's no way they are legit. Shouldn't we be reporting
these 'occurrences' to the authorities? 911/other ? Has anyone made such
reports?

Please alert your neighbors, especially seniors, students, and those whose
first language is not English, to be wary and not give any info or bill
statements to such persons, and by no means do not let them in your house.
These people can be very pushy and intimidating, which could scare some folks
into giving them what they want... :(

Same guy (or guy with same attitude) was on 45th St last week. Stopped by
twice, got the door both times.

So ... some dude from Verizon stopped by with a clip board & offered me FiOs. I

how about I sign you up for an install date and you can look at things on line
and if you don't like FiOs you can cancel the install" -- I said no -- my
father having once told me that if someone wants you to buy something right now
& won't let you think about it they're probably up to no good -- but he was
very reluctant to take no for an answer. Eventually I had to just shut the door
on him, Fuller Brush salesman style.

[UC] Found Samsung phone

2016-07-07 Thread Karen Heenan
If you happened to be sitting on my porch steps late last night at 45th and
Locust, and left your phone behind on the porch, please feel free to contact
me. Phone is a Samsung, has seen better days and is pin coded so I can't see
the owner.
