[UC] Fwd: [UCNeighbors] Holiday crime alert

2017-07-01 Thread Linda Lee

I’ll add to this that if you are/plan to go away please let close neighbors
know. Timers on indoor lights, as well as a radio playing (low) can also be
helpful.

[UC] looking for abandoned calico cat, Clark Park area

2017-06-11 Thread Linda Lee
Neighbors,

Please be on the lookout for a stray calico (multi-color) cat around
Regent/Chester/Kingsessing & 45th/46th, possibly in Clark Park. This momma cat
and her three kittens were abandoned a couple days ago near 45th & Regent. The
three kittens have been rescued but mom hasn’t been seen. She will be looking
for a source of food and water and is likely very scared. If you see her
please get a pic and contact projectmeowrfa@gmail with location and time seen.
If you can provide food and water that would be great and would help to keep
her close by until she can be captured. Even better if you can lure her
indoors with food…

thanks!

[UC] red fox(es) in the neighborhood !

2017-05-09 Thread Linda Lee
Please share with neighbors/block groups:

I caught sight of one today at 2pm swiftly climbing - yes, they can climb! - a
neighbor’s back fence west side of 43rd at Osage. About the size of a very
large cat. All happened in a flash. Couldn’t believe it at first, but a
friend a couple blocks away says she saw one recently around 44th & Larchwood.
Someone she talked to saw one at 50th & Kingsessing a week ago.

Please be careful, and don’t leave your dogs unattended, and try to keep your
cats indoors.

>>
>> The primary agenda item is discussion of the new dog policy established by
>> Philadelphia Parks & Recreation.
>> Highlights include the following:

>>> A volunteer neighborhood group can petition to start a dog run in a park.
>>> There are currently seven. The group must establish that there is strong
>>> community support, & also that it is willing & able to maintain the run
>>> independently of PP
>>>
>>> A park group can also petition to establish a dog-free zone. This comes
>>> with signage & all.
>>>
>>> A citywide animal-control team has been contracted by the city to respond
>>> to & deal with low-grade dog offenses & issues. There is a number people
>>> can call. The police will respond to actual attacks by dogs on humans.
>>>
>>> Outside a dog run, the leash law is in effect. The leash must be 6' or

>>>
>>> There is a nice list of other commonsense dog dos & don'ts.

Folks,

This dog is currently circling Clark Park. ***Besides a harness and a coat he
is also wearing a muzzle (so can’t eat or bite). Someone tried to approach him
but he moved to quickly. If you see this pooch please report location and time
to ACCT (Animal Control) ASAP: 267-385-3800.

then along 45 to Kingsessing, and looped back up to 49th till
Springfield, then down 50th back to Florence Ave.

I've looked for it a couple of times, and with the intense storm
yesterday, I fear it's gone. If you find it, please hold onto it for

Initiative to Help Protect & Assist Vulnerable Residents
Convening Number One:
Immigrant & Refugee Policy

The Philadelphia Bar Association, with the support of the City of
Philadelphia and several non-profit legal aid organizations, has
formed Take Action Philly (TAP) - an initiative uniting lawyers,
government, community organizations and residents to protect and
assist some of Philadelphia's most vulnerable residents. Together,
we will identify ways to become involved and engaged in response
to federal and state policy decisions.

Through this unprecedented effort, TAP will convene local public
and private sector lawyers, as well as community members and the
general public, for a series of discussions. The goal of convening
is to educate Philadelphia's legal community about the anticipated
impact of federal and state policy decisions in various topic
areas, and identify an action plan for people to get involved.

The first event of the series will focus on Immigrant and Refugee
Policy. Members of the legal community are encouraged to attend
and learn how to take action by working together to design
solutions that can truly make a difference in the lives of many of
our residents.

It is my pleasure to announce the inception of the Friends of
Kingsessing as an official program within Kingsessing Recreation
Center!

We need volunteers to come out to our first official service event,
being held Saturday, February 25th, 10am to 2pm.

Projects currently include painting the front offices and basement
of the facility, along with a few light maintenance tasks around the
building. Please come for a day of true community service through
sweat equity and ready to get paint on you!

Future events will be held on a monthly basis (no-commitment
needed), dates TBA, and future projects will be based on the input
from and skills of the volunteers who particpate.

The Advisory Council, the Rec center, and the community would be
very grateful if you can make it to this event, as volunteers truly
make this facility function.

Pass the word around and invite your friends to come too, the more
help, the better!

Please RSVP to me at tungw...@gmail.com or through Facebook so I
know how much coffee, water and snacks to pick up.

Hi Veronika! Great questions! We (Paige as a friend, and I as an
"American Friend" refugee volunteer) are definitely working with the
family to avoid this from happening in the future. They have not
been able to pay the rent because the apartment that was made
available to them by their resettlement organization is too
expensive for them, as the parents have not been able to find jobs
yet (mom has a parttime job which is great, but unfortunately it
pays very poorly and is far away). We are helping them with
arranging finances/taxes etc., the housing situation, and finding a
(better) job, but right now we are at all cost trying to avoid that
they get evicted. If you have any more questions, please feel free
to email us, we'd be happy to tell you more!
Thank you for considering helping this West Philly family! If you
want to help out in other ways (bringing a meal, taking them to
neighborhood resources in the neighborhood like 2nd mile or the
Nesthing house, help dad with English lessons, etc), let us know.
You also may meet them at Malcolm X park or at the library. They
would love to get connected with more neighbors!

Thanks, awesome West Philly community!
Warm wishes,

Irene

whose surfaces are level with the sidewalk/curb UCD (or where there
are heaving roots). Before the project begins UCD will circulate
information about the project via doorknob hangers, and residents can

anything invasive, just protective (for the curbside trees only). I
believe UC Tree Tenders will continue to observe and prune sidewalk

2017-01-26 Thread Linda Lee
Thanks, Karena and J.HA. I share your concerns about the possible
disturbance of plantings under trees - some visible (like ground
covers), and some not visible. Brian said they will definitely be
mindful of other plants in the tree pits, and won't mulch tree pits
whose surfaces are level with the sidewalk/curb UCD (or where there
are heaving roots). Before the project begins UCD will circulate
information about the project via doorknob hangers, and residents can
contact Brian with any questions/concerns. UCD isn't looking to do
anything invasive, just protective (for the curbside trees only). I
believe UC Tree Tenders will continue to observe and prune sidewalk
trees as they've done in the past -- any tree tenders out there who
can comment on this?

Re. the street cleaning vacuum thingy, I'm sure this is managed by
some other department at UCD. You could go to their website and check.

Just curious (disclaimer: I don't live in the area that will be
impacted by tree mulching): will UCD honor residents who do not want
their tree pits mulched? Are they also going to maintain sidewalk
trees in other ways (i.e. timing branches, cleaning up fruit
dropped, and tending to any instances of disease)? My understanding
is residents are responsible for the property (including trees) up
to the curb in front of their house. If UCD is taking it upon
themselves to start tending people's property, to what extent are
those responsibilities shared with the homeowner? I know some people
have plants in the area around tree pits, or add annuals, which UCD
certainly wouldn't be aware of this time of year, and mulching may
impact plant growth. Is UCD asking every household whether or not
they want their trees mulched?

While I respect UCD's efforts to be good stewards of our
neighborhood, this seems it could be particularly controversial,
especially if homeowners aren't even consulted on the matter. It's
good to at least one they're using appropriate (arborist) mulching
material. I know I would be a little upset if someone came and
mulched our tree pit without my knowledge or consent.

Just my two cents.
Karena

[UC] Re. UCD tree mulching - correction & update

2017-01-25 Thread Linda Lee

Neighbors,

I've had a positive response from Brian with UCD about my mulch
concerns, along with other info. on the project. I was given the
wrong info by the guys raking on my block this morning... The mulch
UCD will eventually be putting down in the tree pits will _not_ be
black mulch; it will be a triple ground mulch of tree bark & roots.
Brian says they do not use hardwood or dyed mulch.

More... The area they will be mulching is from Baltimore to Market,
42nd to 46th. Brian said they will be careful not to over-mulch,
considering other plantings in the beds, and will not mulch tree pits
whose soil line is level with the sidewalk/curb. They are suspending
work on this for now, in order to better inform neighbors of their
plans and allow feedback.

Again, though, make sure the mulch that surrounds your tree(s) is not
touching the trunk of the tree.*

* APPLYING TREE MULCH [Morton Arboretum]

Spread mulch under trees, shrubs, and throughout planting beds to a
recommended depth of 3-4 inches for medium to coarsetextured materials.
Pull mulch away from the bases of tree and shrub trunks creating a
donut-hole. Do not pile it up against the trunk (“volcano mulching”).
Excessive mulch on the trunk causes moisture to build up, creating
ideal conditions for insect pests, diseases, and decay.
Ideally, the mulched area around a tree should extend to the drip line
of the branches, or at least cover a 4-5 foot diameter area around the
trunk. The larger the mulched area, the more beneficial.

Check the mulch depth annually and replenish as necessary.

cheers,
  LL

[UC] UCD removing leaves from tree pits along 43rd *AND REPLACING WITH BLACK MULCH*

2017-01-25 Thread Linda Lee
I just talked to a UCD guy near my house who was sent out (with crew)
to rake the leaves under the trees along the curbs along 43rd (from
Market to Balt, possibly up to 44th?) and replace with black mulch. I
asked the guy not to do my and my neighbors' tree pits, and explained
natural leaf mulch is healthier for these trees than manufactured (and
dyed) mulch.

Obviously, UCD feels 43rd needs beautifying, so let's just throw heaps
of black mulch around our precious trees. Wondering if UC Green
approve of this.

If you have a curb tree that gets dumped on with black mulch please,
at the very least, pull away any mulch that is touching the base of
your tree.

I don’t know if this is the same dog but I’ve just heard that there
was a dog meeting this description at 48th and Baltimore this
afternoon. We saw him at 49th and Spruce this morning, and he may
have been up as far as 46th and Fairmount earlier. He seems to be
coming up to people walking dogs so if you’re out dog walking, keep
your eyes open. He may be injured - I got close enough to almost
pick him up but he would not let me touch him.

young men who appeared only interested in acting violence upon me

[UC] Re: City Leaf Collection this week - starting today!

2016-11-17 Thread Linda Lee

Notes re. mechanical leaf collection:

1) leaves picked up mechanically today & tomorrow WILL be taken to the
Fairmount Park recycling center (to be composted)

2) they've started collection TODAY (Thurs), closer to campus
3) there MIGHT be mechanical pick-up on the other side of Baltimore -
they couldn't confirm or give locations, when I talked to them today

The more leaves the city picks up mechanically the better! Get out
and rake/sweep, if you can. Even if the leaf vacuum doesn't get to
your pile of leaves it will be easier (for you) to bag them, whether
you put out for trash or haul them (in the paper leaf bags) to the
dirt factory (Market, btw 43rd & 44th - check website for times of
operation).

See Mark's note below, about Dec 3 block clean-up day.

Fall Leaf Collection

Here's some details on city leaf collection for University City:

Once again this year the city is going to use blowers and vacuums to
pick up leaves along the curb in a limited section of University
City. That is the area between 38th and 52nd Streets and Spruce and
Baltimore Ave. The pickup date for that area is this Friday, Nov.
18. Leaves should be raked to the curb (unbagged) by 7 a.m. This
will be rain or shine. They will make one pass and and not come back
later.

Residents wishing to recycle their leaves can put them into paper
bags and bring them to a city recycling center. Be sure not to
include trash and debris. The nearest centers are at 43rd and
Powelton Ave. and 66th and Haverford Ave. This is 9-3 on Saturday
starting the 19th, but not the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Leaves
left in bags along the curb will go into the regular trash pickup
and not be recycled.

There is lots more info for anyone interested on the Streets Dept.
Web site: http://www.philadelphiastreets.com/leaves/mechanical-leaf-collection
 and http://www.philadelphiastreets.com/leaves/bagged-leaf-drop-off-location-schedule

In addition, the University City District has scheduled a block
cleanup on Dec. 3. Here are the details on that:

On Saturday, December 3rd, UCD is partnering with the City of
Philadelphia to organize a neighborhood cleanup. We will assist
block captains, students, volunteer groups and neighbors by
providing trash bags, brooms, work gloves, and trash pickup. Help

[UC] Update Re: Tiny Kitten seen on1000 block of S 45th St

2016-09-17 Thread Linda Lee
FYI, a stray mom and two kittens were rescued from under a parked car
near 45th & Regent yesterday around Noon by Project MEOW volunteers,
in response to Michael Munson's post on facebook. (Kittens and mom
(who is friendly) will be in foster care after vetting today.) Not
positive if one of the kittens was the one noticed by Tony Nixon at
4:30am (posted about previously), but it is possible. One of the
volunteers checked the area again this morning and didn't see another
kitten - which doesn't mean there isn't another (or more)! If anyone
is in/near the park (A or B) today and spots a kitten please contact
P. MEOW (projectmeow@gmail.com), whether you're able to capture or
not. :)

ALSO, a reminder that there is ALWAYS a need for more great foster
homes for rescued kitties! And we are still in kitten season! Foster
kitties are fully vetted and healthy before going into foster homes,
and require little space (indoor only), square meals, and lots of
love! If you have an interest in fostering, or other volunteer
options - there are many ways to volunteer! - email projectmeowfost...@gmail.com
 for more info.

Many thanks!
:-)
