[UC] extra 32 two panel door, anybody?

2014-08-07 Thread Ana Kostich
Dear neighbors,
I am hoping someone has an extra two panel interior door [typically used in our
houses] that they can part with. Most of us have some in our basements. :) And
yes, I can trade you with 26 or 28 ones in very good shape but I REALLY need
the [about] 32 one. The version with the upper panel glass is all right as
well. Will pay reasonable price.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

Stray large [but short] pitbull mix, very tired, or exhausted, was resting at
the ally [and backyard] of my house and Kings . Emaciated. Avoids people. You
look at him he moves away. :( The cat wasn't afraid. Walks heavily. I left some
food. Not there. Nor the pooch. What to do. It couldn't be the same dog from
past winter? He was adopted, no? Oooh.

I posted earlier in the week about the big brown pit/mastiff that has
been roaming around the neighborhood. He has no collar and is scared
to death of people.
I now have him contained in the backyard of 1132 south 46th st. I
feed him twice a day and gave him my tent and some blankets to keep
him warm, but he is still terrified of me.
I was thinking I would try to wrangle him and get him fostered, but I
really don't want to get bitten - my health insurance would not cover
it, and it hurts.

I have called ACCT/PSPCA everyday since Monday to pick him up.
Maybe if a bunch of people call they will come get him?

The number for ACCT is 267-385-3800.
Again, the dog's address is 1132 south 46th st in the tent in the
backyard.
Please call if you can!

[UC] Antiques burglary at 45th and Locust

2009-08-29 Thread Ana Kostich

I really want to report this:

There was a burglary last night [around 3am] at 4528 Locust street.

The house is not inhabited as the renovation work is still going on] and some
construction material at the porch
was a sure indicator of the status. Nevertheless, all the houses around are
well occupied. The neighbor heard the noise which must have been horrendous
because they kicked the front door to get in and teared the second one out of
the frame [old oak with leaded glass I had remade last year]. That was the
intended loot. That's all they managed to get as the neighbor called the police.
I believe they are coming back for more antiques [mantles, leaded glass
windows].

I know this has been going on in the neighborhood for some time. Could you
please let me know of the case you know [the latest wave] so I can compile
something. I am determined to recover this. It cannot disappear. Later, I'll
post the picture. I appreciate any help. Have to go now and get something to
try to secure the house.
There is a d...@#! ring of antiques burglars and the accomplice dealers in
Phila and that needs to be broken!

The police came [reportedly] quickly last night but did not want to call me
[the other neighbor was trying to call in their presence] nor come the house I
was at [less than a block away] and did not make a report till finally just
before I wrote this. I called at 10am.
These are not the just plain burglaries.
Let's stop it, please.
Thank you.
Your frustrated neighbor,

Subject: McCain's dangerous choice

Dear MoveOn member,
Yesterday was John McCain's 72nd birthday. If elected, he'd be the oldest
president ever inaugurated. And after months of slamming Barack Obama for
inexperience, here's who John McCain has chosen to be one heartbeat away from
the presidency: a right-wing religious conservative with no foreign policy
experience, who until recently was mayor of a town of 9,000 people.

Huh?

Who is Sarah Palin? Here's some basic background:

 * She was elected Alaska's governor a little over a year and a half ago. Her
previous office was mayor of Wasilla, a small town outside Anchorage. She has
no foreign policy experience.1

 * Palin is strongly anti-choice, opposing abortion even in the case of rape
or incest.2

 * She supported right-wing extremist Pat Buchanan for president in 2000. 3

 * Palin thinks creationism should be taught in public schools.4

 * She's doesn't think humans are the cause of climate change.5

 * She's solidly in line with John McCain's Big Oil first energy policy.
She's pushed hard for more oil drilling and says renewables won't be ready for
years. She also sued the Bush administration for listing polar bears as an
endangered species—she was worried it would interfere with more oil drilling in
Alaska.6

 * How closely did John McCain vet this choice? He met Sarah Palin once at a
meeting. They spoke a second time, last Sunday, when he called her about being
vice-president. Then he offered her the position.7

This is information the American people need to see. Please take a moment to
forward this email to your friends and family.

We also asked Alaska MoveOn members what the rest of us should know about their
governor. The response was striking. Here's a sample:

She is really just a mayor from a small town outside Anchorage who has been a
governor for only 1.5 years, and has ZERO national and international
experience. I shudder to think that she could be the person taking that 3AM
call on the White House hotline, and the one who could potentially be charged
with leading the US in the volatile international scene that exists today.
—Rose M., Fairbanks, AK

She is VERY, VERY conservative, and far from perfect. She's a hunter and
fisherwoman, but votes against the environment again and again. She ran on
ethics reform, but is currently under investigation for several charges
involving hiring and firing of state officials. She has NO experience beyond
Alaska. —Christine B., Denali Park, AK

As an Alaskan and a feminist, I am beyond words at this announcement. Palin is
not a feminist, and she is not the reformer she claims to be. —Karen L.,
Anchorage, AK

Alaskans, collectively, are just as stunned as the rest of the nation. She is
doing well running our State, but is totally inexperienced on the national
level, and very much unequipped to run the nation, if it came to that. She is
as far right as one can get, which has already been communicated on the news.
In our office of thirty employees (dems, republicans, and nonpartisans), not
one person feels she is ready for the V.P. position.—Sherry C., Anchorage, AK

She's vehemently anti-choice and doesn't care about protecting our natural
resources, even though she has worked as a fisherman. McCain chose her to pick
up the Hillary voters, but Palin is no Hillary. —Marina L., Juneau, AK

I think she's far too inexperienced to be in this position. I'm all for a woman
in the White House, but not one who hasn't done anything to deserve it. There
are far many other women who have worked their way up and have much more
experience that would have been better choices. This is a patronizing decision
on John McCain's part- and insulting to females everywhere that he would assume
he'll get our vote by putting A Woman in that position.—Jennifer M.,
Anchorage, AK

So Governor Palin is a staunch anti-choice religious conservative. She's a
global warming denier who shares John McCain's commitment to Big Oil. And she's
dramatically inexperienced.

In picking Sarah Palin, John McCain has made the religious right very happy.
And he's made a very dangerous decision for our country.

In the next few days, many Americans will be wondering what McCain's
vice-presidential choice means. Please pass this

2008-03-13 Thread ana kostich

His case is not comparable to typical dominant man carnal conquests where Bill
Clinton's extramarital excursions fall which are 'victimless' crimes [two
consentual adults bla bla]. Spitzer's real crime, not the hypocrisy and moral
betrayal of marriage and constituence, his real crime is in enriching a
criminal enterprise - point. No public official, let alone governor, is allowed
to do that. Prostitution is illegal in most states of the US, and was so were
he enjoyed it. He knew though that his money trail was watched more carefully,
as he himself worked on tightening that. These guys are just so pathetic when
they find a 'proper' situation to 'fall in love'. Someone is shotting a movie
already [in Hollywood, or is it - Washingwood].

I bet this is going to be a boost for the Emperor's type establishments as the
status lesser males [and aren't they Emperors too?] will not like to be left
out and some competitive women with cool diplomas would realize how underpaid
they are and that there are other oportunities. Great PR for the escort

Another of the self-righteous -- this time, Eliot Spitzer -- has fallen. They

Not to be (too much of a) sexist -- but Kristen seems to fall somewhere

NEW YORK (March 13) - She left a broken home on the Jersey Shore at 17 and
came to New York City to work the nightclubs as a rhythm and blues singer.
Now, at 22, she is the unwitting, and as yet unseen, star of the seamy drama
that is the downfall of Gov. Eliot Spitzer of New York.

Kristen, the prostitute described in a federal affidavit as having had a
rendezvous with Mr. Spitzer on Feb. 13 at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington,
has spent the last few days in her ninth-floor apartment in the Flatiron
district of Manhattan. On Monday, she made a brief appearance in federal
court, where a lawyer was appointed to represent her. She is expected to be a
witness in the case against four people charged with operating a prostitution
ring called the Emperor’s Club V.I.P.

In a series of telephone interviews on Tuesday night, she said she had slept
very little over the past week, with all the stress of the case.

“I just don’t want to be thought of as a monster,” the woman said as she told
the tiniest tidbits of her story.

Born Ashley Youmans but now known as Ashley Alexandra Dupré, she spoke softly
and with good humor as she added with significant understatement: “This has
been a very difficult time. It is complicated.”

She has not been charged. The lawyer appointed to represent her, Don D.

had accurately filled out and signed a financial affidavit, she responded
 affirmatively.

A person with knowledge of the Emperor’s Club operation confirmed that the
woman interviewed by The New York Times was the woman identified as Kristen
in the affidavit. Mr. Buchwald confirmed various details of Ms. Dupré’s
background but would not discuss the contents of the affidavit.

Ms. Dupré said by telephone Tuesday night that she was worried about how she
would pay her rent since the man she was living with “walked out on me” after
she discovered he had fathered two children. She said she was considering
working at a friend’s restaurant or, once her apartment lease expires, moving
back with her family in New Jersey “to relax.”

She did not say when she had started working for the Emperor’s Club, or how
often she had liaisons arranged through the ring. Asked when she met Governor
Spitzer and how many times they had seen each other, Ms. Dupré said she had
 no comment.

As of Wednesday morning, Ms. Dupré’s MySpace page recounted her “odyssey to

 Melani,
Yes, they have their discrepancies too: Privilege has its privileges
even when they are, in the very least, unethical. I think of Robert
Hanson, the hyper-traditional Catholic, who never did any of the naughty
things that the other men in the bureau (F.B.I.) did; instead he sold
state secrets to the Soviets resulting in billions of dollars in lost
technologies and research and lost lives. He was a true American
patriot (and Catholic) in his own mind: He hated communism,
homosexuality and, no doubt, moral relativism. I think that the Right
confuses piety with morality, while the Left confuses correctness
with justice. Both sides exalt the ideal form rather than the messy
substance of the real. You can do this when you're up their on the
summit of privilege - whether in academia, politics, business or religion.

RE: [UC] Glenn fouls himself in public yet again.

2008-02-15 Thread ana kostich

Somewhere in Texas a village is missing an Idiot.

Really?! The one that will go back to it after a double mandate instead of
going to and rotting in jail? And 300 mils of non-idiots allowed that to
happen, right? Or wrong.

On our local level: We seem overpopulated with the breed right here and could
export a few - whereever they are lacking them.

 My word!

Is this list always like this? A few dominate/monopolize with endless tirades
that insult and impugn others on a personal basis? I recently joined this
list to keep my eye on ulta local issues of interest. Not this stuff.

RE: [UC] Dance floor and live entertainment

2008-02-15 Thread ana kostich

Well, singing and dancing for hospital related extended stays - is surely an
interesting moment. That must be a proven method for dropping off the worries
the loved ones of the sick people [and children!] do when they are majorly
stressed.

Penn should be ashamed of this one. For once? It is surely more cost effective
to work on owned land than to pay [a few mils] for the site that would both
serve their purposes and allow them to express those purposes openly as well as
to contribute to the neighborhood. There are blocks on commercial streets a
little more west that would happily absorb all of that. They could have a hotel
equipped for longer stays for parents, visiting scholars and students, hospital
related guests and whoever else [and there are 'else'] for whatever duration,
as it is supposed to be with the right to turn suites into whatever and - could
bring something of value to the wider neighborhood. There is nothing wrong with
Chestnut Street further west. There is something Potemkin villages like in
this whole elitist, egotistic scheme.

One thing, Hilton has nothing to do with any of this. That's a brand, like many
other possible ones simply bought by the developer to attract guests. The brand
is promised that the new hotel with their name would be at the standard they
have set for that brand which in turn serves as a 'guarantee' to wide groups of
possible users. Could have been many others.

I don’t believe anyone has reported to the list about Penn’s secret attempt
at an accelerated zoning process. The hotel developers applied to zoning
Jan. 18th. (Al's post came in just as I prepared to send this)

The hotel was rejected Jan. 30. Just like the PHC rejected the hotel and then
approved it, the developers will need to circumvent the laws using some
 backdoor approach.

Consider the following data that was exposed Wed. night. The Hilton
developers want live entertainment and a dance floor! Like the forgetful
Spruce Hill zoning committee, Lussenhop forgot to tell us this until it was
revealed in the REAL DATA, which we can analyze.

Neighbors, the extended stay label is simply an industry term. It describes
rooms with microwaves, etc. It has nothing to do with the actual length of
stay for guests. Hilton will maximize profits by having overnight guests
paying higher rates. All of the data the developers continue to thrust on us
 is to deceive us.

The first report by the Daily Pennsylvanian was our first clue and the dance
floor simply confirms the Hilton business plan. The DP called the hotel a
less expensive option for Penn parents. It’s total crap that people flying in
from Alabama to stay by their family’s bedside will come back to the hotel
for dancing and live entertainment. As one of our neighbors pointed out, they
will stay near the airport since they can’t afford upscale hotels.

The hotel will be used for overnight guests and parties after Penn football
games, etc. It will be used for parents to drive in to visit their kids in
Campus Apts. All hotels have extended stay options. The data Lussenhop is
providing (at what one neighbor called dog and pony shows) are called red
 herrings.

No cars, limos, or taxis will ever be an issue for neighbors according to
 Lussenhop data.

Neighbors, Penn closes down streets and tows residents’ cars, as it pleases,
to serve its clients. On St. Patrick day, Penn closes down streets near the
bars for the drunken student orgies. When Judy Rodin gave a speech in Clark
Park in the late ‘90s, I was luckily sitting on my front porch when the tow
 trucks came.

Without notice, tow trucks removed people’s cars so that the limos and SUV’s
could roll in for her speech.

After Penn football games, some of the hotel guests will have parties. It’s
not just the 120 cars that will roll in that day, but the hundreds of guests
rolling in for the parties and dancing. I have no doubt that the Penn police
will close the street to locals and start the towing.

Just watch what happens on 39th St between Walnut and Chestnut on St
 Patrick’s day!

We know, without doubt, that we can’t trust these developers because they
have tried so hard to eliminate our voices from this process.

But let’s look at the real data. Right on the rejected zoning application,
everyone can see that Penn refused to tell us about the dance floor and
upscale shows. One of our neighbors pointed out that if the guests turn out
to be upscale gentlemen, the live entertainment might very well be girly
 shows.

 Stay strong neighbors,

 Glenn

I do not know the owners but I stopped while passing [slowed down driving by to
annoyance of others] to first wonder and then admire the work they've done with
the gate and parking. Thoughtful, contemporary and contextual - as it should be.

Does anyone know Jeffrey Heit and Luisa Boverini of 224 St Marks Square?

They are applying to Construct rear deck, cut door, and legalize gate and
parking area on their house. Because of the historic designation, they will
appear before what we have learned are the irrelevant preliminary Grand
Inquisitors, formerly known as the Historical Commission's Architectural
Committee, this coming Tuesday, 11:15 am, Room 578 City Hall.

Anyone wanting to testify that this won't lead to the slumification of
historic St Marks Square (you know, those lovely Victorian Homes abutting the
backside of that award-winning architectural gem, the Sadie Alexander School
(designed by Olshin Co of Lussenhop's Folly fame -- and probably in line

[UC] RE: Competent and Reliable Plumper

2008-02-07 Thread ana kostich

Oh, that's just a person who plumps. If he/she plumps right the first time then
he/she is a reliable plumper. The result of plumping is - a plump, which can
be both competent and reliable, competent but not reliable, not competent but
reliable or none of these in which cases it is dubbed accordingly CR plump, C
plump, R plump or non-CR plump.
Consequently, the object that plumps is also a plumper. They are innately
incapable of reliability but they are all highly competent. That quality is
unexplicably always credited to the person who plumps though.
That simple. You didn't know?

Also, my favorite plumber [and I know a bunch] is Daine Barett.
A little busy [works himself] but worth waiting for espacially if the job is
big. Loves cast iron.
His prices are always better [especially if you say that I recommended him] and
he is just great.

[UC] Work for Larry?

2008-01-16 Thread ana kostich

Dear neighbors,

I and another neighbor-friend have been employing Larry Haris, a Bethesda
project person, for at least four years now on various, mostly construction
related, projects. We have not had work for him for a few months at least and
he is suffering from it.
We wonder [hope, is better] if he could help some of you on your smaller[or
extended] projects while he is looking for another more regular work [he
injured his back at last 'regular' work]. He is generally reliable, good at
demolition, trash removal and anything repetitive but he is not independent
mechanic. He patiently torch scraped paint off of my porch, sorted old tiles
for a bathroom remodel etc. He is a good basic helper. Could do simple
restaurant work [Vincent/Roger?] or pull the trash cans out and back on trash
days for a bunch of neighbors for a little weekly/monthly fee [?].
Can work per hour [$8-9] or per job which I'll be willing to asses with you and
instruct him initially.

Thank you,

Ana Kostich
