Re: [UC] [Announcement] Vote for Andy Toy

2007-04-01 Thread Wilma de Soto
I do not know whether Andy Toy knew anything about the UC listserv when I
met him in January.

What I do know is he was very interested in and impressed with our
neighborhood.

As I have it, it was one of his first announcements of his intent to run as
City Councilman-At-Large, and he was cool.

Over and Out!

what's funny in all this is how it's raised more questions

for example, how did the toy campaign people know about the

not that it matters, just sayin how there's still a ways to

I saw someone who I took to be andy toy handing out andy toy literature.
I saw lewis talking. His talk was like "Hey, thanks for coming, we're
going to give out some keychains, check your ticket stub to see if it

There were a bunch of people there from Philly Car Share. Jannie

I figured the post to the list was from someone who hated Andy Toy. I

I was at Dock Street. The sound system was terrible. The crowd did not
quiet down when speaking began. I don't remember if Lewis was the only one
who
spoke, or if others spoke also. Thanks was offered to lots of people, and
after that, the crowd got bored, I guess, and stopped paying attention and was
even louder.   It was so impossible to hear that I gave up listening while
they were calling out the door prize ticket numbers.   I doubt that anybody
more
than ten feet away from Lewis heard what was said, if anything, about Andy
Toy, or anything else after the opening "thanks."  I know I didn't.

Andy Toy was there and had been talking to people all around the room. He
did walk up to Lewis when introduced. Maybe he said something - again,
nothing could be heard above the noise of the crowd. Later, Jannie Blackwell
was
there (after all attempts at talking from the microphone ceased), and she also
walked around talking to people all around the room. That was it, for
politicians that evening.

Now The Toy affair: When the first, vote for andy toy from aol, com, came to
the list; I didn’t look at the web link and just dismissed the post because
there is too much to do. When the strange West follow-up post came, I read the
entire Toy web site and the original post.

(FYI. Criticism of Mr. West use of quotes. I never questioned the veracity of
the Toy quotes as West is now suggesting above. Mr. West failed to disclose
where or how he got the quotes he used. Now, the above post seems to suggest
that Mr. West interviewed Mr. Toy and his campaign manager for his "day job."
His post looked like a news story. It sounded like an opinionated editorial. It
wasn’t identified with any news story or publication. We had no idea how the
quotes had been obtained.

The West post took the form of a simple post from any of us listserv cranks
so the whole combination of features becomes confusing. However, I can’t
understand why Mr. West would call my criticism of his post an investigation
into "his day job" While he could call my comments many things, investigation
into his day job is simply absurd. )

Too me it seems obvious that this strange Toy affair was created by an
"enthusiastic supporter" of Mr. Toy rather than as a "dirty trick" born out of
"UC-List politics." In my opinion, the list has just been used to appeal to
those whom I call "UCD cheerleaders." After reading these things closely, its
clear to me that the publicity was all meant to be beneficial to Toy.

As for this "UC-list politics", I recall a speech delivered at a UCD, NID
performance, and later printed on this listserv. In it, there is an explanation
made that a mythic group exists whose members have an organized agenda to
disrupt any "community improvement." Furthermore, those who question or
criticize whatever projects have been elected by the elite body of citizens
should be ignored due to the mean spirited obstructionism at the root of all
their nosy questions.

This preemptive grouping of mean spirited dissenters is a corollary
phenomenon to the ad hominem machine so often used. Manufacturing this mythic
organization of curmudgeons and dissenters and then accusing them preemptively
of this mean spirited agenda serves as a warning to the rest of you considering
any questions or criticisms. You are also manipulated to immediately ignore
any importance in their questions or criticisms.

It is a tool for suppressing dissent as it generally serves as a veiled
threat to others that criticism and questioning itself are a signal to the
powerful that an individual should be categorized with the obstructionists and
punished. This is actually the true "dirty trick" and everyone who wishes
honest discussions and values our democratic principals becomes the victim as
honest debate is intentionally and shamefully muffled.

It appears to me that this is being attempted at the same time the Toy
campaign message has been delivered through this list. Someone from this

In a bizarre electoral twist, a post from a hitherto unknown and unidentified
contributor to UC-list, appended below, has been rejected by the candidate it
purports to promote.

Andy Toy, candidate for City Council at Large, said, "I would just like to
clarify the previous posting from a supporter named 'voteandytoy'. I was not
and will not be endorsed by UCD, which is a non-partisan organization that
works with all to improve the University City area.

"I happened to be one of UCD's very active partners and friends while at the
Local Initiatives Support Corp (LISC) over the past 5 years, helping to fund
improvements along Baltimore Avenue. Lewis Wendell did introduce me as one of
the supporters of Dock Street and its revitalization of the Firehouse at 50th &
Baltimore. As such, LISC has been working with the owners, Councilwoman
Blackwell's office, the neighboring church, the community and UCD collectively
to try to iron out an agreement that all could live with. Mr. Wendell did not
ask anyone to vote for me at the event, although I did let people know I am no
longer at LISC in order to run as a Democratic City Council At-Large candidate.
I appreciate some of my supporters' enthusiasm, but their statements do not
represent the campaign as a whole."

Anthony Ingargiola, Toy's campaign director, said he had no idea who had
created the AOL account 'voteandytoy' and was anxious to find out. "We're not
experts at listserve technology on the campaign staff," he said. If anybody on
UC-list can give any tips on how to find out the originator of the false post,
he would appreciate their help.

It could be an enthusiastic but misinformed supporter, he said.
Alternatively, it could be a dirty trick pulled off by a subtle opponent
familiar with UC-list politics.

Alternatively,
it could be a dirty trick pulled off by a subtle opponent familiar with UC-list
politics.
