[UC] crime warning

Some of you may recall the recent incident regarding the shooting of an
individual at 45th & pine. This individual was shot, in the face, after
surrendering his belongings to the perpetrators. He survived the
shooting.

It has come to my attention that there was an incident several days ago,
wherein a couple was sitting on there porch on 49th street and a young man
came onto the porch, displayed again and tried to gain entry to the house.
The couple, entering first, slammed the door on him, at which point he
fired the gun into the house. No one was injured.

And last night, a man was approached by three guys at (45th & Locust) who
took his backback, cell phone and car. They made him lay face down in the
street and beg them not to kill him.

We have not heard anything from the University regarding these incidents
(the first incident involved a University employee).

We have not heard anything from the police.
Neighbors, be careful! Look out for each other, and don't hesitate to
call 911 if you see something suspicious going on on your block.

Jebas. Where's the crime blotter? Is this stuff showing up in the crime blotter or are we the crime blotter now?

I heard a rumor last night that two suspects were arrested in the shooting on 45th and pine -- has anybody else heard this? How do we stay in better contact with the police? (especially now that clave's closed)

Does someone have any indication of the TIMES when these incidents
occurred?

The first incident where the victim was shot in the face struck me as
unusual, since, if I recall right, it occurred
Pretty early in the evening.

The ugly crimes used to start later at night.

If criminals assume that they can get away with these crimes at earlier
hours, I fear we are reverting back to the situation we had in the mid-
1990s where no time of day was really safe in University City. That was
A bleak period, when we had muggings and robberies right in the middle

I am not complaining (and would never suggest that they are being
opportunistic about the recent alleged crime wave) but Diller and Nicholary
have, for 2005, raised the price of their neighborhood armed escort service.
They justify the increase on the grounds that they have new, very shiny,
weaponry. Nonetheless, for the piece of mind they provide, they are worth
every penny.

Fw: [UC] crime warning

2005-01-05 Thread Anthony West
Title: RE: [UC] crime warning

There's a common perception that crimes are
late-night affairs. This may reveal deep-seated psychological attitudes toward
darkness and light but it's quite mistaken. Nobody should base their behavior on
the idea that the streets are "safe" at 6 p.m. and "unsafe" at 12:00 p.m. Crime,
like the A-Plus, is a 24-hour business. That's why the police work all three
shifts. The last two crimes against my person (spread out over 20 years) both
took place around the evening rush hour, in heavily trafficked
areas.

It depends on the perpetrator's goals. If you want,
for instance, to encounter a stranger quickly and take money off his or her
person, standing in a dark alley at 3 a.m. is a really stupid strategy
since few people are IN alleys at that hour, and the few
who stagger along have probably just blown their wad at a bar. The
afternoon rush hour makes more sense. Many more folks are abroad, and they're
apt to have money then. Toward the end of the week, people are likelier to have
pay in their pocket at that hour also. They're tired, they're rushing to get
home and they're not paying attention to their surroundings. They're less wary
of others because there are so many others about, thus they're easier to
approach.

The 45th & Locust incident, as reported, seems quite odd for trouble
like this. The Watutsi and Abyssinia, at each of the north corners are open
quite late and have people coming and going. Also, the Jade Palace is open
fairly late, and also generates street traffic. And the UCD Ambassadors have a
presence in that area.

Was this really the location? Or was it in the genuinely wee hours after

I would suggest that one would read, “The Gift of Fear”, by Gavin de Becker.

Mr. de Becker now works as a bodyguard to major celebrities and noted personalities.  In fact, Beatle George Harrison actually died at his house in California.  He wanted his last days to be utterly private.

He knows well the criminal mindset and gives many tips about the sorts of people who stalk others in order to pick them out as potential marks and victims, and to harm and commit crimes against them.

The best thing I found was something I was taught as a kid:  Always follow your gut instincts about a person even if you think you look foolish.  Never try to rationalize that you are being silly when someone is behind you that you get a feeling about or approaches you and tries to be really friendly.

Logic and reason sometimes make us victims.

Does someone have any indication of the TIMES when these
incidentsoccurred? The first incident where the victim was shot in

start later at night. If criminals assume that they can get away with

in the middleOf the day.Ann Mayer

Actually the time of day makes no real difference where crime's
concerned - anywhere, not just UC or West Philly.  I have, in the
past, been mugged 3 times - all 3 times in Center City, all 3 times in the
middle of the day to early evening (with lots of people around - once was right
in front of the old Woolworth's on Chestnut Street with people watching!).
This was before I learned the "walk fast - a moving target's harder to hit"
theory.  Works pretty well, at least those times when I can walk
fast;)  Of course, night - especially late night does seem to be a more
opportunistic time for the bad guys to be out and about looking for someone
alone/lost/drunk/whatever ...

The 45th and Locust incident?  Did NOT happen at 45th and Locust -
that's our intersection.  We would have seen/heard, if nothing else, the
police activity following something like that, as we live 3 doors away from the
corner.

It might have been 45th Street, but otherwise, I've heard nothing about
this one.  The 45th and Pine assault was on the evening news the day it
happened and it was the dinner hour, as it was "breaking news" on the local news
that day.

Thanks for the update john -- I, for one, would like to stay in the loop on _all_ these incidents as much as possible. Court dates and eventual outcomes and the like. I fear too often we only hear about the crime and not what happens afterwards. Like that string of burglaries a few months ago, I know they caught _somebody_ but I don't know if he ever went to trial, and what about the two would-be muggers chased away by the armed homeowner who then shot at a police officer?

I wish we had a more thorough police blotter.
