Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] piCoPlayer = Squeezelite on Microcore linux. .An embedded OS in RAM with Squeezelite
Hello, I'm a very happy user of picoreplayer on my raspberry pi's. I'm using currently 3 pi's in combination with 2 squeezebox radios (were smart ue before, but reverted to squeezebox [emoji4] ). I wonder if I can use the squeezebox in the same room as my pi's: -audio syncing is already possible thanks to the audio delay options -what to do with the volume? I would be able to sync that as well by using the volume wheel on the squeezebox. If I use my squeezebox at 'normal' listening volume it is at appr 20% of the max volume. But that seems to low for the pi's... They output the weak signal to my amps and as a result the amp must be at max volume to hear something. It also affects the sound quality in a negative way. I'm looking for a setting on squeezelite or picoreplayer to add audio gain or extra volume out (e.g. x1.5 or x2 the volume on my squeezebox) Does anybody of you face the same problem when using a squeezebox player in the same room as one or more pi's? dafiend wrote: By 'design' work, you mean software design?? No hardware. I design my own circuits and PCBs for amps, power supplies and soon DACs. Again, I may be wrong here, but shouldn't a class-compliant USB DAC actually be less work? For many class-compliant USB DACs, you got out-of-the-box support in the standard linux kernel made available by Raspian and the like, not just in newer, but also in older kernel versions. (I am aware picoreplayer is not based on Raspian). For a Hifiberry, you may need to build your own kernel, as the default kernel will generally be missing some modules unless you're using a very recent kernel. The same argument can be used for I2S. It is a standard. Every I2S DAC should just work. Issues do arise for sampling rates, I2C (C not S) controls etc. I don't know, when I read this forum, everybody seems to say you *need* a RPi + picoreplayer + a Hifiberry add-on card. I don't understand why that is. Why not a cheap USB audio dongle or a cheap high-quality USB DAC such as the Behringer UCA 202? Both are cheaper than a Hifiberry. They are easier to hook up than a Hifiberry (and they won't require a bigger case for the RPi). And, lastly, they're available domestically in many countries so, unlike with the Hifiberry, I don't have to import the good, paying high shipping rates and import tariffs and wait like 2 weeks for the good to arrive from Switzerland. Everyone has preferences depending on lots of different reasons. Your decision may be dependant of availability. Mine is on cheapness. I buy the cheapest component I can find from China. When I build my own I read the datasheets and determine what chips have the better specs. Others may think Brand A sounds better then Brand B. Some like recommendations from happy users. One more edit: Is it possible that various devs working on picoreplayer or related DIY-squeezeboxes have some kind of financial interest in Hifiberry? hmmm:mad: Greg Erskine's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7403 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=97803 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

dafiend wrote: But USB is a purely digital, bit-perfect connection. I don't see how it would affect the digital-analog conversion in any way. Anybody care to explain? From my (surely incomplete) understanding, USB audio interfaces usually work just as well as sound cards directly hooked up to the board. Yeah, you may need a USB buffer of 1-2 ms or so to account for slightly higher latency of USB, but that's about it.There should be no difference at all as long as the USB connection is just sending the data, and not electronic noise. That is an occasional problem with some cheaper audio devices with poorly designed power supplies but I have not come accross the problem with the Pi USB and is certainly not any kind of general problem with USB. I had a Behringer USB DAC attached my Pi, but it was a less than ideal solution (ugly, messy, more cables). I bought the IQAudIO PiDAC and dedicated case because it looks prettier, no extra cables. A neater solution all round and the DAC chip itself is a much more capable and modern design than the one in the Behringer. I have not done an A/B comparison between the Behringer and the PiDAC, but the latter certainly sounds very good. A lot of the sound quality of a DAC lies in the pre-amplification of the fragile analogue signal that emanates from the output side of the DAC which needs boosting up to line level of 1.5v before going to a power-amp, powered speaker or whatever. The PiDAC seems to do a decent job of that part of the process, but ultimately that is where you get the benefit of more expensive Hi-Fi DACs. They often use the same chips as cheaper DACs but are better at the amplification job. The SqueezeBox Touch was praised for its sound quality but the Transporter was exemplary - despite an older design of DAC chip. Hi, I have an SD card (64GB) with music files. I wish to use the external SD card slot, mount it on the file system and use it as the storage for LMS. The OS does not seem to recognise the card. Not sure of the corresponding /dev entry for the card.
