I never bothered to fix as perl 5.10 had just been released. I rescued the position by installing perl 5.8.8 which is known to work well with all versions of SC. Mike's guide is for perl 5.8.8. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Ubuntu Desktop or Server?
A few notes which may help you with the installation and running of Squeezecenter on Ubuntu-server 8.10. You will need to either log in as root or use sudo for each of the following commands. UBUNTU-SERVER TOOLS To help manage the server from a server terminal, use midnight-commander, htop, rcconf These apps can also be called from an SSH terminal on the Windows PC using PuTTY. Add the following packages: sudo apt-get install mc htop rcconf WEBMIN Using the Webmin APT repository If you like to install and update Webmin via APT, edit the /etc/apt/sources.list file on your system and add the line : deb http://download.webmin.com/download/repository SARGE contrib You should also fetch and install the GPG key with which the repository is signed, with the commands : cd /root wget http://www.webmin.com/jcameron-key.asc apt-key add jcameron-key.asc You will now be able to install with the commands : apt-get update apt-get install webmin All dependencies should be resolved automatically. SQUEEZECENTER sudo apt-get install libfreetype6 (this necessary to make SC run on 8.10 server) sudo apt-get install mplayer lame edit the /etc/apt/sources.list and add: deb http://debian.slimdevices.com stable main deb http://debian.slimdevices.com testing main deb http://debian.slimdevices.com unstable main (I use this one SC 7.3) Comment out # the lines not required then: sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get clean sudo apt-get install squeezecenter SC has its own version of MySQL so to reduce processor load, from a terminal type: sudo rcconf deselect mysql from startup list with rcconf Good luck -- Ramage T5500 1.6GHz, SC 7.2-22869 Win Vista, Alien 2.0 P4 2.6GHz, SC 7.3-23688 WinXP, Alien 2.2b1-7.3 P2 266MHz, ubuntu server 8.10 SC 7.3~24187 Alien 2.4a1-7.3 AMD64x2 ubuntu 8.04, SC 7.3-24187, Alien 2.4a1-7.3 Ramage's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5343 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=55910 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/unix

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] help with lightweight headless ubuntu server
If your primary use of the laptop is as a squeezecentre server, then I would recommend using ubuntu 8.04 or 8.10 server versions. I have 8.10 server running on an old p2 266Mhz processor with 192M memory. This serves up the music fine but is a little slow scanning the library. I have mplayer and lame installed for additonal music formats. I use PuTTY and WinSCP to work with the server which is completely headless. I also install midnight commander (mc) to manipulate files and htop to monitor performance over SSH. With the server version I only install SSH and samba. You can use Webmin also for server management. All my music is resident on a second drive on the PC. Ubuntu Hardy uses Apparmor with a Mysql profile which stops SC from running properly even though it appears to start OK The Apparmor problem discussed here: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showth...297#post301297. Squeezecenter version 7.0.1 and later has a fix. To check it out: Firstly stop apparmor with the command: sudo /etc/init.d/apparmor stop restart squeezecenter with the command: sudo /etc/init.d/squeezecenter restart. If SC runs OK, and you able to use the web interface on localhost:9000 - you have the apparmor problem. SC versions before 7.0.1 will run with apparmor stopped, but apparmor will restart when you reboot. The fix in 7.0.1 modifies the mysql apparmor profile to allow SC to run. The following text needs to be added to: /etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.mysqld # SqueezeCenter Apparmor Changes for MySqld /var/lib/squeezecenter/cache/ r, /var/lib/squeezecenter/cache/my.cnf r, /var/lib/squeezecenter/cache/mysql.startup rw, /var/lib/squeezecenter/cache/mysql-error-log.txt rw, /var/lib/squeezecenter/cache/squeezecenter-mysql.pid w, /var/lib/squeezecenter/cache/squeezecenter-mysql.sock w, /var/lib/squeezecenter/cache/MySQL/ r, /var/lib/squeezecenter/cache/MySQL/** rwk, This text is inserted before the final "}" at the bottom of the file. This is essentially what the 7.0.1+ fix does. See http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=7580 which identified the fix in later releases of SC. When you've patched the file, restart apparmor and restart SC. Glad that worked. Try a reboot and see if SC continues to run OK. On first install of a recent 7.1 this file > didn't exist so I had to create it. I presume you are using ubuntu 8.04 Hardy. I haven't tried 7.1 but stayed with 7.0.1, although I think they are the same in respect of apparmor. It seems you may have a corrupt /etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.mysqld. Squeezecenter appends a number of lines to this file to accommodate squeezecenter. I also note that you have Mysqld in complain mode. This is a useful help page: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AppArmor and should help a greater understanding of apparmor. This will guide on how to manipulate apparmor profiles. The apparmor profiles are in /etc/apparmor.d. So that you can backtrack, I have attached the original /etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.mysql (.txt added to validate for this forum) Please feel free to copy it into your /etc/apparmor.d folder. You could safely delete any previous usr.sbin.mysql files. Squeezecenter will add any necessary lines to this file when you next do an update. If SC doesn't start then use Code: #sudo service apparmor stop wait 5 secs for SC to start then start apparmor Code: #sudo service apparmor start SC should then run without problem until the next update. If you have such an entry then you need to check the rc0.d to rc5.d folders in /etc/rc.d for startup symlinks of the type SxxMusicMagicServer where xx are 2 digits 0-9. You may also see symlinks of the type KxxMusicMagicServer (which stops MM on shutdown). If you don't have the script and links, I suggest you put your startup script "/usr/share/MusicIP/MusicMagicMixer/MusicMagicServer start" in /etc/rc.local, and it will be executed after all the other init scripts on startup. I can't recall whether MM server needs to be running before squeezecenter starts, this may be an issue also. This advice is based on the way CC uses startup scripts but be aware that I don't have MM on my machine, and have not tried it. -- Ramage T5500 1.6GHz, SC 7.0.1-18576 Win Vista, Alien 2.0 P4 2.6GHz, SC 7.0.1-17976 WinXP, Alien 2.0 P2 266MHz, ClarkConnect 4.1, SC 7.0.1-19177, Alien 2.0 AMD64x2 ubuntu 8.04, SC 7.0.1~19177, Alien 2.0 Ramage's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5343 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=46697 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/unix
Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Slimcenter 7.0 on Ubuntu 8.04 - apparmor issues
There is still a problem with running 7.0.1 on Ubuntu 8.04. Today's nightly installed OK but will not run - same symptoms as yesterday - an apparmor problem. I can get it to run by stopping apparmor, restarting squeezecenter and then starting apparmor. I get the following message when restarting apparmor. > [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/home/ramage# service apparmor start > Loading AppArmor profiles /sbin/apparmor_parser: Unable to add > "/usr/sbin/mysqld". Once running I can start and stop squeezecenter without problem with apparmor running (I think). I can't see a pid for apparmor in htop or system monitor - should it have one? I don't think mplayer is available from the CC repository, although an rpm version for Fedora core may work. But you could download the source code and compile, it's what I did (a long time ago). I don't recall that I had any issues. To compile the source you will need the cc-devel package from CC. apt-get update apt-get clean apt-get install cc-devel then go to http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.html to get the latest source Download to a temp directory of your choice and unpack, a directory named mplayer will be created. cd to the mplayer directory. Type the following ./configure make make install NOTE: 'make' and 'make install' may take some time. The mplayer binary created should be located in /usr/local/bin. That should do it. Use Alien to test mplayer or in a terminal window type: Code: mplayer -bandwidth 1000 -cache 128 -playlist http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/realplayer/media/fmg2.rpm To stream mp3, you will also need lame, but you may have that already? [SlimDevices: Unix] How to Install Perl 5.8.8 on Clarke Connect
ClarkeConnect (C-C) has perl5.8.5 linux-thread-multi installed as default, but this version causes Squeezecenter to crash when using CLI on addons such as Moose and slimfx. To fix these problems SqueezeCenter needs Perl-5.8.8 linux-thread-multi. My previous attempts to update C-C to perl 5.8.8 had limited success, as I had not configured the perl as multi-thread, nor accounted for C-C modules which were dependent on C-C perl libraries. There were lots of dependency problems, a real PITA especially with SC7 and some C-C modules did not work. Eventually I got Perl-5.8.8 running correctly on my main C-C machine but to prove the method, I used a vanilla C-C 4.2 running on a virtual machine. (this will also work with C-C4.1) This is what I did: Install a compiler. #apt-get update #apt-get clean #apt-get install cc-devel Create a new temp directory for the perl source code #mkdir /temp #cd /temp Download the latest source code from www.perl.com to the temp directory, use: #wget http://cpan.org/src/stable.tar.gz #tar -xzvf stable.tar.gz A new directory /temp/perl5.8.8 will be created - go there #cd perl-5.8.8 Install the thread-capable Perl somewhere different to the default install. To do that, use the -Dprefix argument and tell Configure not to link this new Perl as /usr/bin/perl with -Uinstallusrbinperl. Make a directory for the newly compiled perl: #mkdir /usr/local/bin/myperl ensure that you are in the unpacked /temp/perl-5.8.8 directory, then: #sh Configure -Dusethreads -Dprefix=/usr/local/bin/myperl -Uinstallusrbinperl During the Configure run, you will need to add essential ClarkeConnect perl 5.8.5 directories to the @INC path. To do this, respond to the prompts with a default except: When prompted for: "Colon-separated list of additional directories for perl to search [none]" enter the following:- /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.5/i386-linux-thread-multi:/usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.5/i386-linux-thread-multi:/usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.5 Accept all the defaults until prompted to check config.sh. (Optional) Open config.sh in nano (or other text editor) and find "otherlibdirs", the list of directories entered above should be there, if not or there are errors edit the "otherlibdirs" line and save config.sh. (Be careful not to change anything inadvertently) When the Configure run is complete, you can #make #make test #make install To get the new Perl to work from the default location (/usr/bin/) Rename the existing Perl binary (for safe keeping - if needed in the future), enter: #mv /usr/bin/perl /usr/bin/perl-old Create a symbolic link in place of the old Perl binary which points to the new Perl binary, by entering: #ln -s /usr/local/bin/myperl/bin/perl /usr/bin/perl Check that permissions allow execution Check that your version of perl is as you want it, and includes the correct directories in @INC. Use #perl -V When you are satisified that perl 5.8.8 is running correctly, install/update SqueezeCenter using the rpm.
