Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Minimum CPU/mem req for Slimserver without X

2007-02-19 Thread hsmeets

Hi,

I'm running slimserver on a VIA mini-ITX 500Mhz rig, linux (ubuntu),
alongside the usual web-, mail and fileserver tasks.
No performance problems. Flac's are served up without any hickups.

I'm running SlimServer (and other incidental stuff, such as NFSD, SSHD
etc) on a Kurobox HG. This is a 266MHz PPC box with 128Mb RAM.

SlimServer, along with AlienBBC etc, runs fine.

Gentoo took a while to install, but it works great now.

I've got you both beat...

P3 450Mhz w/ 64MB RAM running FreeBSD 6.1 w/ a MySQL 5.0.27 backend and
a 1.5TB RAID5 (4x 500GB WD SATAII drives on a cheap raid controller).
The machine acts as a firewall/router for a large network while
handling a 5000+ archive of FLAC tracks with ease -- all the while
streaming 96k files (Pet Sounds DVD-A) to my Transporter.

Love it!

I just put SlimServer on a Solaris 10 x86 box with an Athlon 800MHz CPU
and 768MB of RAM. I did have only 256 but RAM is indeed cheaper than
waiting...

I just installed the default complete Solaris package. I'm quite happy
with the performance of SlimServer, even when using the web interface.

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Minimum CPU/mem req for Slimserver without X

2007-02-16 Thread fry

While this thread seems abandoned I found the information here useful
and I think it is still relevant as throw-away hardware seems to become
more and more powerful.

Here's my info:
- Slimserver 6.5 running on a Jetway B860T with a PIII @ 1.2GHz and
128MB of PC100 RAM.
- OS is FreeBSD 6.2 without X and only ssh in addition to the
slimserver related apps/libs. It runs a custom kernel - unused stuff is
trimmed out.
- I use a 320GB ATA100 WD drive (8M cache) strictly for data; there are
2 partitions of ~150GB using UFS2. The system drive is on a different
IDE channel and much smaller.
- My collection consists of 320kBit/s FLAC files (my CD collection) and
some MP3. Roughly there are ~5000 tracks and I keep adding as I digitize
them.

It runs smoothly and without stutter even while the server is updating
the DB w clean & update option. The free memory is ~480K while updating
and ~17M during normal serving (w ~50M inactive).
I only have a SB2 client but I'll try it with an additional softsqueeze
or two.

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Minimum CPU/mem req for Slimserver without X

2007-01-24 Thread Michael Herger

1) Will running slimserver on modern XP laptop be fast enough?

Yes.

2) Will Squeezebox find the slimserver running on the laptop, even
though the laptop may turn on only minutes before playback, and have a
different IP. Is reconfig required? How much of a hassle is it to run
and find slimserver on a roving machine like a laptop?

I think the SB is keeping the server's IP address. You'd therefore better
have a fixed address. Most dhcp servers can assign these automatically so
you don't have to give up dhcp.

3) Can the Squeezebox get a static IP (e.g. 192.168.1.99) or look for
the slimserver by hostname?

See above.

4) Please confirm: a 300Mhz Celeron II with 128Mb or 256Mb, running
Linux-2.6.19 with no X, is *not* going to work as a slimserver.

Can _not_ confirm. With 256MB this would work. You probably wouldn't be
happy with the web interface performance, though.

5) Would Athlon XP 1500, 512Mb DDR suffice? (I have a few of those
parts around)

More than enough. My machine has a lot less horsepower (Via C3/1GHz) and
easily handles web, mail, another MySQL and all the rest of a typical home
server as well. Configured as a dedicated SlimServer running some Linux
flavour this would be a great choice.

You can do static IPs on both ends, but if they're both on the same
subnet they'll find each other. Keep in mind that if both machines are
on wireless, you'll tax your WAP more heavily than it might be able to
handle (streaming 320kpbs music twice is not the same as browsing the
web and downloading some files).

3) Can the Squeezebox get a static IP (e.g. 192.168.1.99) or look for

That should be fine, with 256 mb. There are those who'd run it with
128 mb or less, but RAM is cheaper than waiting :)

5) Would Athlon XP 1500, 512Mb DDR suffice? (I have a few of those

That would do fine.
