The service will start at boot time normally. using the start up script
will get it going if it hasn't started and will complain that the
service is already running if it is. It's just my lazy way of checking
whether the service is running and/or installed!

2009-08-09 Thread mudlark

Why don't you upgrade to 9.04?

download a live Cd and try it. If it works then upgrade. You might have
to do a multi stage upgrade. If you don't like upgrading then always use
a longterm support version. 7.04 is no longer supported so all your
efforts trying to put new software on the old operating system will only
take you out of the experiences of the experts as they won't be using
7.04 and you will only be relying on their memory.

spend the effort upgrading and the system will build easier. newer
versions of ubuntu and my favourite, kubuntu, work pretty seamlessly.

Thanks Mudlark. I have spent all of today trying to get 9.04 loaded on
to one of two PC's (without success).

The upgrading route was not an option as neither 8.04 or 8.10 would
install on either PC, and I have had problem after problem with 9.04
even though it does at least try to install. Never say die though, I've
got a good 20-30 years left in me yet!

[SlimDevices: Unix] Ubuntu install no go.

2009-08-08 Thread Nuuk

I've been working with computers since 1972, programmed in machine code,
Basic, HTML and Java but me and Ubuntu just don't seem to work
together!

I want to install Squeezecenter (Ubuntu 7.04)so followed these
instructions

Instructions for Ubuntu:

Editing the sources.list and installing the SqueezeCenter package on
Ubuntu can also be achieved using the GUI. Go to System / Administration
/ Synaptic Package Manager (provide your password). In the Manager
select Settings / Repositories and click the Third Party Software tab,
click +Add and provide one of the deb xxx strings mentioned above. In
the first tab Ubuntu software make sure that the Universe is selected as
well. After clicking Reload the list of packages will show SqueezeCenter
as additional package which will be downloaded and installed along with
its dependencies.

But when I type in a string (or anything else) where it says APT,
nothing happens. So what do I do next?

1. I don't see APT mentioned in the instructions you pasted there.
2. How far did you get doing what you did?

Please be more clear _what_ you did and what the error was you got..

The steps normally should be

* edit /etc/apt/sources.list and append the entry for squeezebox below
it.
* run sudo apt-get update
* then install squeezecenter by sudo apt-get install squeezecenter

I have just installed SC on Ubuntu and got exactly the same problems.

If my memory serves me correctly you need to keep running

apt-get update

I think I also manually installed mysql as well.

try apt-get install my-sql (could be mysql)

or try apt-get update my-sql

When my-sql is full installed and upgraded then install SC

apt-get install squeezecenter

Thanks Ralph. By run apt-get update' I take it that you mean I do that
from the Terminal?

If I try it I get an error 'Could not open lock file' and if I try
'sudo apt-get update' it asks me for my password but will not then let
me type it in.

I know Ubuntu is free and it seems churlish to complain about it but it
has wasted so much of my time this last three years, I really wouldn't
want to publish my thoughts about those who produced it!

An OS should be an interface between the user, ie human being, and the
PC, ie machine. Ubuntu clearly fails that test for the vast majority of
computer users. Or is it just meant to be for those that don't have a
life to live away from the keyboard?

apt-get update is the same as clicking the reload button in synaptic.

If you have synaptic open, or another instant of apt-get is running you
can indeed you get the lock error. Only one program at the time is
allowed to edit the db. You also get the error when you have
insufficient permission (aka running it as user not root)

sudo apt-get update on a terminal ask your password and let you type it
in, however it will not show that you are entering something.

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely
that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies.

 :/etc$ cd /apt
bash: cd: /apt: No such file or directory :-(

Linux is very picky about names and slashes.
cd /apt
is not at all the same as
cd apt

I think that you are better off using Synaptic's GUI to do all this,
since you don't seem to be familiar with shell commands. The GUI handles
a lot of the syntax for you.

But this thread has both Synaptic and shell command, as some folks use
one or the other.

In my Synaptic GUI, I sometimes get different results in the search box
in the tool bar and in the pop-up dialog that I get when you click on
the search icon (which looks like a document and a magnifying glass).

In my 9.04 system, there is a meta package, named mysql-server in the
results of searching for mysql.

That is the one you need. altho I always install the mysql-client as
well, but its not required by SqueezeCenter

Yes it does say 2009-02-21 Remove feisty.

So that is that then unless I can manage to get a newer version of
Ubuntu on this PC. Thanks for all the help anyway.

Sorry, I assumed 9.04 (and 7.04 was a typo as it is so old).

Sorry.

Not to worry! It's a shame though there isn't a note on the download
page.

To be honest I think synaptic should give a warning when trying to
install anything that feisty is not supported and packages are no longer
available.
Because if they where available it would probably work.
