2013-06-01 Thread Peter Alcibiades
Is Kobo any good? Yes, the new slightly oversize one is the only e-ink
e-reader to get. Unless you want to go to the really big ones like the DX,
and there are one or two variants of that.

The Kobo is fast, incredible definition, open standards, and the extra
screen area makes all the difference. And it takes memory cards.

The Nook HD+ is also very nice as e-reader but its backlit. Especially now
its opened up to the android store. Wonderful screen and very cheap for
what it is. Maybe not the best tablet, but a great ereader. But backlit
is a bit tiring. Kobo is a lot better to read and of course hugely better
battery life.

Is Kobo any good? I'll promote it to Packt if you think it would be of interest?

As for the other variations, I did buy the iBooks and Kindle ones myself too!

About the next edition, I'm a bit behind, but the hope is to have it complete
in July sometime, so that the September Kickstarter folk will get the new
revision. If that doesn't work out, I'll send the PDF to you!

10 and 14 May. We'll start shipping the books as soon as they arrive. I
will also try to ship books to the conference in Scotland, but it is
going to be extremely tight.

Now that the book is ready, I can tell you a little about the last
changes I made. I removed the table of MySQL field types in the
appendix, because that isn't really the subject of the book. Instead, I
added a much longer table with all specialfolderpath codes available on
Mac OS X and Mac OS 9 (Classic). A table for Windows was included
already. I thought these tables would be more useful. I might post the
MySQL table on the website of the book later. The website hasn't been
set up yet, but will include a place to discuss the book with other
readers and I might give an explanation occasionally.

There have been many questions about an ebook edition. There are no

If you would like to make suggestions (perhaps for a second edition),
please be specific. For example, if you propose a screenshot, tell me on
which page, accompanying which lines, why you think it is a good idea,
what it would explain, and what you would delete to make space for the
screenshot. I'm getting too many well-meant but useless suggestions.

I can now also announce the ISBN of the book: 978-90-820741-0-9. With
this number, anyone is able to order the book at a book shop, but it is
much quicker and possibly cheaper to order it directly from
Economy-x-Talk's website. More trivia: the final version of the book has
248 pages, three prefaces, a table of contents of 6 pages and an
alphabetical index of 9 pages. There are 17 pictures and 15 tables, some
tiny and some big. I really had to squeeze in all the info, because the
book wasn't supposed to count more than 240 pages (you get 8 pages for
free).

Sales are going very well. The printing costs have been earned back
already, but a few other things like envelopes and stamps and the ink I
used to print my drafts still have to be paid for. Therefore, if you
know someone who considers taking up programming either as a
professional or for a hobby, tell him or her about my book. We'll need
to sell quite a few more copies to make it worth the effort. Obviously,
I'm never going to be compensated for my time, but that wasn't the point
anyway.

I'll let you know when I have more news.

As a paperback, not so sure

This past year we have and continue to get *all* our publications in al
four mainl formats.. see e.g.see

I'm amazed to learn that

a) there are users on all those platforms (even NOOK gets plenty downloads)

thought we didn't need it for some publications and then I had to handle

We outsourced this work to an excellent company in Chennai, their rates

Bought a copy after looking at the preview pages.

Might I suggest a few more screenshots at the start to show where the
different parts of the interface are. For example, your describe the
edit/run buttons but a screenshot would be far more effective, especially
for a new user.

I, too, join the chorus for a PDF and ebook formats. An associate of mine
sells his books through Amazon which can offer different formats as well as
a print-to-order capability. This significantly cuts down on the cost of
book production.

You might also consider making a PDF version available for those who have
purchased the print version.

A ebook would be cool in addition to the paperback as a reference to easily
carry around.
However, for that type of books I prefer "real" books with the possibilty
to make easy notes, and the possibility to make an index (and frustrated
throwing around with a kindle isn't that fun either ).

Thanks to Heather I will attend the first two days of the conference as
well :-)
Hope to see you there between the workshops

Let me think about this and contact you off-list. Rest assured that I

Re: [ANN] Book. Programming LiveCode for the Real Beginner

2013-04-25 Thread Rodney Somerstein

Hi Mark,

I do think that the community needs a book like this and was all ready
to purchase a copy, only to find that it isn't going to be available as
an ebook. Any chance you will be reconsidering that stance? I, and quite
a few other people I know, don't really buy much in the way of paper
books any longer. The thought of a tutorial and reference book that I
can't search really isn't very appealing.

While I personally am not in favor of DRM, if you sell it as an ebook
through Amazon or Barnes & Noble they will automatically apply DRM to
the book unless you request otherwise. That would likely prevent casual
piracy of the book - though certainly not all. If you simply don't like
ebooks, then I don't really know what to suggest.

Anyway, should you reconsider and make an ebook version available, I'll
gladly purchase a copy to read on my iPad as a PDF or using the Kindle app.

Thanks,

-Rodney

Hi LiveCoders,

A new book about LiveCode, titled Programming LiveCode for the Real
Beginner, is now available at http://qery.us/3fr

In 2011, I started writing a book. The purpose was to write a book
simple enough to get people started with LiveCode and advanced enough
to elevate the reader beyond the beginners stage. It took me slightly
longer than I had planned for as I had a few small setbacks, but I
have finally finished writing it.

The first few chapters of the book deal with basic syntax, such as
mouseUp handlers and the go command. The next few chapters discuss
subjects like chunks, variables, repeat loops and printing. Special
attention is paid to the property inspector, controls and their
properties. Halfway the book, the reader should be able to create a
simple programme.

Advanced subjects discussed in the second half of the book include
unicode, databases, sockets, MySQL, XML and more. A complete overview
of the contents is available in the sample of the book on the website
(please note: I will post the latest version of the sample in a few
days).

Currently, I'm making the last corrections to the lay-out, registering
an ISBN and adjusting the book cover according to the printer's
specifications among other things. I will send it to the printing
company on 1st May and it should be available right before the
conference in Edinburgh. I won't be there, but with a little luck a
few copies of my book will be.

I have sold quite a few copies already, but not enough to break even.
If you think that the LiveCode community needs a book like this,
please consider buying your own copy. Obviously, if you're just
starting with LiveCode, then I wrote this book especially for you. The
more copies are sold, the more likely this book is to stay available
for years to come.

There are several ways to order the book. Shipping costs all over the
world are included. Contact me for reseller and bulk rates.

Congratulations, and best of luck with this!

May I suggest that you also consider publishing part or all of this
book under a free license. There are various models to go about this,
taking some time to inquire about it may be worth it down the road (or
not).

This is quite important if you want it to make its way into libraries
and into proper bibliographic references :)

Pardon my ignorance but for eveyone's benefit (others here may be
contemplating such a venture), what is the difference between the
process you're going through to get an ISBN and this:
http://www.epubbud.com/isbn.php

Also thanks for making the website a one-page-order experience, many
similar sites make it difficult to buy it right away.

Cheers,

Fabian

[ANN] Book. Programming LiveCode for the Real Beginner

2013-04-25 Thread Mark Schonewille

Hi LiveCoders,

A new book about LiveCode, titled Programming LiveCode for the Real
Beginner, is now available at http://qery.us/3fr

In 2011, I started writing a book. The purpose was to write a book
simple enough to get people started with LiveCode and advanced enough to
elevate the reader beyond the beginners stage. It took me slightly
longer than I had planned for as I had a few small setbacks, but I have
finally finished writing it.

A complete overview of
the contents is available in the sample of the book on the website
(please note: I will post the latest version of the sample in a few days).

Currently, I'm making the last corrections to the lay-out, registering
an ISBN and adjusting the book cover according to the printer's
specifications among other things. I will send it to the printing
company on 1st May and it should be available right before the
conference in Edinburgh. I won't be there, but with a little luck a few
copies of my book will be.

I have sold quite a few copies already, but not enough to break even. If
you think that the LiveCode community needs a book like this, please
consider buying your own copy. Obviously, if you're just starting with
LiveCode, then I wrote this book especially for you. The more copies are
sold, the more likely this book is to stay available for years to come.

There are several ways to order the book. Shipping costs all over the
world are included. Contact me for reseller and bulk rates.
