AW: strage things happening with Rev cgi 2.5

2007-03-05 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB
JB,
I have made once the experience of a corrupted script or object. When
compiling the script it gave me always an error, where definatly no error
was. My solution was to copy the script into a txt file, delete the object
with its script, create a new object and paste the script again into the new
object. Now the same script was compiled without any error.
My two cents
Tiemo

Betreff: strage things happening with Rev cgi 2.5

I think I have already posted on this topic a few weeks ago,
 but didn't get any reply.

I have a Rev cgi script that runs fine on a Linux RH server.
the script is about 400 lines long.

In that script, I have a couple of lines that creates a path file in
a directory on the server, opens the file, writes the content
of a couple of variables in it and then closes the file.
something very simple that I'm using for debugging.

When my script is OK, I comment those few lines (with --
at the beginning of each line) because I don't need them anymore.

And right after that I get a systematic error 500 when running the
script. If I uncomment the same lines, the script runs fine again.
If I delete those lines, error 500 again...

I'm puzzled because I have plenty of other comments in the same
script, that have no effect on it...

This problem seems to happen now and then on some scripts only...

 Any idea ?

 Thanks,
 JB

Re: Pendingmessages

2007-03-05 Thread Richard Miller

Richard,

We discovered that the pending messages were the source of our file
transferring problem. I don't know what the doc's say or when these
messages are supposed to be sent, but I do know they greatly effected
our file transferring routine, interrupting it at seemingly random
times. When we paused them (using a variation on Key Ray's
suggestion), the transfer process began working reliably. Perhaps
this is a fault in the pending messages system that should be looked
into.

Pending messages are only sent at idle, and lock messages no
longer has effect once idle hits should there should be no conflict.

Potential disaster for Rev/Linux pendrive apps

2007-03-05 Thread Bob Warren
I have already reported this bug to Ubuntu and also informed Rev (Kevin)
about it, so this thread is just for the record or for your participation.

Here is the original text of my report:

-
In previous versions of Ubuntu, Runtime Revolution programs can be run
directly from a pendrive by double-clicking on their icon.

In Feisty Fawn Flight 4, this does not happen. Instead, the following
message is given:

Cannot open /media/KINGSTON/revapp
No application suitable for automatic installation is available for
handling this kind of file

If it is a bug, I hope to see it fixed. If it is a new feature, I
don't want it. Runtime Revolution apps can still be run in this manner
from the Desktop, and I see no reason why they should not run in a
similar manner directly from a common pendrive.

-
By mistake, I referred to Flight 4 when in fact it should now be
Herd. They both mean Beta.

So far, Ubuntu have only asked me to supply a Rev standalone app for
testing, which I have done. There are no further reports yet. If you
would like to follow, or participate in, the progress of this bug (which
I sincerely hope is not supposed to be an intended feature), navigate to:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/88229

You might also like to note how simple and client-friendly their bug
reporting system is...

Hi,

Are there any products available to create PDF files in RunRev? I

I don't think there is a native move file command. You will probably
get more mileage calling a shell command to move what you need to

Re: Delete an Array Entry?

2007-03-05 Thread Dave

Hi All,

This is the type of thing where threads tend to go south here:

Whoever wrote the documentation didn't understand how Arrays in
 RunRev work.

That would be hard to believe. Jeanne DeVoto, who wrote most of the
documentation, is one of the foremost documentation experts on
xtalk scripting, starting with HyperCard, where she was one of the
authors of the definitive reference book for that program. She has
been working with the language for 20 years, and I'm certain she
understands how arrays work in Revolution. But if you haven't
worked much with associative arrays, I can see how it could be
 confusing.

Well he should have known better then!

First, Jeanne is a woman.

Just a typing error, didn't meant to imply otherwise.

Second, that a mistake is made in any product's documentation does not
necessarily mean the author doesn't understand the concepts involved,
nor does finding such a mistake mean the author is fair game for
insults.

There were no insults made and are you 100% sure that Jeanne *did*
write that particular piece of documentation?

I'll be perfectly honest with you: the Rev documentation contains some
errors and omissions.

And I hope you're sitting down for this next one, as it may shock your
very core: Nearly all software products (certainly all that I've
seen in

20+ years) have errors and omissions in their documentation.

Agree, have never said otherwise.

Sorry to have to break it to you, but the sooner you accept the
complexity of shipping software products, the sooner you'll be able to
deal with your own customers more effectively when they find errors
and
omissions in your product documentation. I hope they report them
to you

in a way that doesn't insult your experience, since that would be as
unnecessary as it is unproductive.

I am very effective in dealing with my own customers. If there are
problems I fix them quickly and don't leave things like this hanging
around for years. I have never insulted anyone's experience and I
hope you don't think that I do or have.

I don't know how many thousands of pages of documentation you've
written, and I'll admit I've written fewer than 10,000 pages over my
career thus far. But through those modest efforts I've come to
appreciate the difficulty of the task, and -- as with code -- I've
come

to accept that in this imperfect world products will be imperfect.

I've no idea how many I have written. At a guess I'd say 10,000 or so
like yourself. I've been programming since 1978 I think.

Fortunately with software, unlike cars and space shuttles, we get a
second chance. Commercial software is almost always delivered in a
series of versions, and each new version offers an opportunity to
address errors and omissions found in the last one.

This hasn't been the case in RunRev, especially in the IDE and
documentation. I have reported loads of things and none of them have
been changed or updated in over 3 years. I've now reported this one.
Anyone care to to bet me some money that it will get fixed any time
soon?

So yes, you've found something in the docs which is technically in
most

cases an error. Good job. Your diligence is appreciated.

Thank you.

One thing on this list is that when you do mention something like
this, a few people immediately jump to the defensive as if the person
doing the mentioning is attacking their baby or kid sister and make
all kinds of excuses or come up with all kinds of reasons why what
the mentioner has mentioned is somehow incorrect or point to other
places in the documentation where what has been mentioned incorrectly
is mentioned there correctly as if this somehow justifies or makes
lessens the original problem.

And now that I've submitted your request for you, and now that you
understand that Rev's are associative arrays and how associative
arrays
work, may we get back on a productive track to address specifically
how

these arrays are causing a problem in your work?

I understood them perfectly before I looked up delete. The
documentation then threw me for a bit since it was incorrect.

There are a lot of people here who try to be helpful. For example,
I've

shown you twice now how the syntax for working with associative arrays
in Rev is largely identical to how one might use numeric arrays,
and how

you can use the unrestricted types of keys in associative arrays for a
broader range of solutions beyond what numeric arrays can support.

I understood that before. My point was that the documentation was
incorrect and led me to think that the use of a numeric key (17) was
a special case whereby it turned it back into a normally index type
array. Which was not the case.

I'm confident that if you can share with us the specific problem
you're

facing with using associative arrays, some of the folks here can help
you solve that problem.

I do not have a specific problem with arrays in RunRev. The

Don''t know what platform you're on, but I would assume that on OS X

Pages (part of iWork).

Hi Dave,

Hi,

Sorry, my mailer is playing up, I lost quite a few emails over the

Thanks a lot for that. Just didn't think of looking at the rename
command. The documentation really is all over the place. If you
look up revMoveFolder, revCopyFile or revCopyFolder is doesn't say
to also look at rename, but if you look up rename is does say
to also look at revCopyFile etc.

in the older days we did not even have revMoveFolder, revCopyFile
nor revWhatEver! ;-)

Thanks again

Hi Luis,

Yes, I'm on MacOS X. I looked at doing that, but it seems like a lot

Other than that, can't you simply print it and in the print dialog

Re: How to create PDF files? Part II

2007-03-05 Thread Dave

Hi,

Basically I need the following:

Page 1 - Title Page has 2 Images at top left and top right of the
page, then a list of statistics about the movie file that has been
analyzed.

Page 2 to End, has two (html like) tables side by side with 6 columns
across. The first 5 contain Text data, the 6th contains a small image.

e.g.

Time Code RED SPAT LUMX
00:00:01:00 0.00.0 0.3 2.1 IMAGE
00:00:01:01 0.00.0 0.4 2.1 M
00:00:01:01 0.00.0 0.4 2.1 A
00:00:01:01 0.00.0 0.4 2.1 G
00:00:01:01 0.00.0 0.4 2.1 E

The data is basically the time code of the movie and data about that
section, the image is a thumbnail of the frame in the movie and
covers all 5 vertical entries.

I'm not sure if I can do this just using native RunRev and the tools
mentioned so far can do this and I don't want to waste time finding
out. I looked at the Quartum Library and I reasonably sure it could
do it, so it's worth a try.

All the Best

The latter is a good question, considering the number of people who have

But regardless who wrote it, should have known better implies

Fortunately with software, unlike cars and space shuttles, we get a

address errors and omissions found in the last one.

documentation. I have reported loads of things and none of them have
been changed or updated in over 3 years. I've now reported this one.
Anyone care to to bet me some money that it will get fixed any time

Hard to say. No release will have 100% of errors and omissions
corrected, and of the hundred or so addressed in the latest release this
one wasn't among them. It was, however, confirmed this morning by
RunRev staff, so at least they're aware of it.

As far as bugs go, this one is pretty minor. As you noted, it hasn't
even caused any problem in your own work, and since the syntax as shown
in the docs is fully functional and nearly identical to what one would
expect for using numeric arrays, it's not likely to be any bigger
problem for others than it has been thus far.

Those are two separate issues, and attempting to merge them may mislead
 newcomers here.

The reader here will find hundreds of posts relating to problem-solving,
some of them relating to working around bugs. I've contributed both
bug-verification requests, and suggestions for working around bugs to
help folks find what they need to keep moving their work forward.

In this case I acknowledged that this is a problem, submitted the bug
report for you, and thanked you for identifying it. Hard to be clearer
or more supportive than that.

As a completely separate matter I noted that implying incompetence with
the author of the documentation is unnecessary and counterproductive.

The severity of a bug is inherent in the bug itself: it either causes
problems or it doesn't. When it does, the first thing to do is log the
bug, and once that's done the most productive course is it to find an
alternate solution while the fix is pending.

This bug is considered minor not by anything I wrote, but by your own
description of how it's affected your work:

I do not have a specific problem with arrays in RunRev.

Glad to hear it.

There's a blocking form for uploading and downloading available in

I disagree. I don't think that it implies incompetence at all. To me,
should have known better means just that, and, once addressed, it
shows that you do know better. However, whether or not Jeanne wrote
it or not and whether she should have known better or not and whether
she is incompetent or not is beside the point (not that I think she

I haven't quite grasped Richard's problem of the pendingMessages. But
I doubt it would make a difference whether using blocking or non-
blocking url routines. The so-called blocking routines are only
script-blocking. i.e. they block the currently executing handler,
but will allow other asynchronous activity. (For example, clicking on
an active button during a download, or presumably executing anything
put on the pendingMessages queue before the blocking routine was
called.)

Generally, anything on the pendingMessages queue will execute during
an FTP file transfer, if it's due to be run at that time. Depending
on the message, it might interfere with the transfer. For example, a
long repeat that exceeds the socketTimeout interval.

Changing a Field's contents when a global variable is changed

2007-03-05 Thread Len Morgan
Is there a way to have the contents of a field on a card change when a
global variable (in this case an array variable) is changed?

I have a multiple card application that I'm converting from Tcl. One of
the things I like about Tcl is that a field has a parameter called
-textvariable) that points to a location that holds the contents to be
displayed in that field. If you change the contents of the field, what
you are really changing is the global variable and vis-versa. This
allows me to put a field on several cards (in different locations on
each card) and when I read a new record, I just put the results into a
global array. I'd like to try and do the same thing in Rev if it's
possible.

I'd like to avoid writing a script in the readrecord function that has
to know the names of every field on every card that needs to show that
information, and then looping through and setting the text of each of
those fields to the contents of the global variable. This seems like it
would be very hard to maintain system.

Thanks,

All print dialog boxes on OS X have an option to print to PDF as part
of the OS. If you install Acrobat you then get a PDF writer turning
up as a printer as well, but with more options.

Re: Potential disaster for Rev/Linux pendrive apps

2007-03-05 Thread Bob Warren

Andre:

I have tried running Rev from my pendrive using xterm in Feisty Fawn
Flight 5 on a live CD. Here is the result:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ /media/KINGSTON/Revolution/revolution.x86
bash: /media/KINGSTON/Revolution/revolution.x86: Permission denied
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo /media/KINGSTON/Revolution/revolution.x86

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

Since I had never tried this from xterm in 6.06 LTS Dapper Drake that I
have installed, I then did it to compare results. Without using sudo,
Rev ran OK, but it gave me the following guff:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ /media/KINGSTON/Revolution/revolution.x86
Could not open libgdk-x11-2.0.so: libgobject-2.0.so: cannot open shared
object file: No such file or directory

Being the very clever young fellow you are, perhaps you can deduce
something from this. I can't.

One other interesting thing in Herd5 - not connected with the above - is
the fact that the beautiful new control panel for preferences and
administration that was present in Herd4 has now disappeared! We're back
to the old menus again...

It sounds like you are using different field names on each card, and not
using groups to work with layouts. Also, it sounds like you are using each
card to be a different layout for the user benefit. If this is the case,
then..

There are ways of doing the task you outline very efficiently, but not using
the same simple mode of Tc1, which is similar to several Excel formulas
linking one value to may locations.

First part - You can use a single global for each value, but better to use a
list format for all of your record fields. My preference would be to read
the data record into an array variable, set the customproperties of this
stack to that array variable. (see why below)

The basic handlers you would write to make updating automatic are in the
stack script:

on populateAllRecordFlds
put the customproperties of this stack into tempList
combine tempList using cr and tab
--now you have a table of property names and values
--eg. (where ^ is the tab char)
  --rcdTime^2:49 PM
  --rcdDate^2/20/07
  --rcdDescription^Last update session
  --rcdTitle^Planning Meeting Notes
  --updateTimeStamp^11223441232

  filter tempList with rcd*
--now you only have the values
   --you care to update

replace rcd with empty in tempList
  set the itemdel to tab
repeat for every line LNN in tempList
--LNN is a var that contains the entire line
put item 1 of LNN into fldName
do put item 2 of LNN into fld fldName
  end repeat

end populateAllRecordFlds

--then you can
on opencard
  --for this card only
  populateAllRecordFlds
end opencard

on retrieveRecord
  --do the retrieve stuff here
  populateAllRecordFlds
end retrieveRecord

on closefield
--update Array
end closefield

My preferred method would be to use a stack custom property since globals
are actually global to the Rev environ, not just the stack. The same global
name used by any other stack would declare and update the same global.

Hope this helps

Database query fields

But I would like to go through about thirty fields with a script and set the

Set the queryobject to bgnd Connect

From the name of the property it looks like I am changing values in an

Hi Richard,

I'm using an open-source tool PDFCreator, which works very nicely
once you know how to use it. It can also serve as a printer server
for Mac OS X while running on Windows and can run from the command
line while it also has a complete GIU (for converting files and
monitoring progress, not for composing PDFs). It can also e-mail the
resulting file or save it to a particular folder. See http://
www.pdfforge.org/products/pdfcreator for more info.

Hello.

I'm working with a helper application to process some video data.
It's passing in int32 and float32 parameters as binary data and I
need to convert them into actual integers and floating point values.
I've been trying to use BinaryDecode to accomplish this, however it
just isn't working. If anyone can spare a minute, here is the

AAE+uaSzPyPAv0CVBg==

According to their API, there are two int32's at the front and eight
floating point values on the end.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

monitoring progress, not for composing PDFs). It can also e-mail the
resulting file or save it to a particular folder. See http://
www.pdfforge.org/products/pdfcreator for more info.

Thanks, Mark. Easy to install, a treat to use. Perfect.

Re: BinaryDecode

Correction: The base 64 version of the data is this:

Hello.

I'm working with a helper application to process some video data.
It's passing in int32 and float32 parameters as binary data and I
need to convert them into actual integers and floating point

however it just isn't working. If anyone can spare a minute, here
is the base64encoded version of my data.

AAE+uaSzPyPAv0CVBg==

According to their API, there are two int32's at the front and
eight floating point values on the end.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Odd issue with compress

2007-03-05 Thread Terry Judd
I've come up against a bit of an odd problem...

I'm doing some data modelling that requires me to create long encoded
strings using the md5digest function - by long I mean tens of thousands of
characters long. I then do a comparison of the strings using a distance
metric based on the individual and combined lengths of the strings after
they have been compressed using Rev's compress function.

This all seems to work nicely until the combined length of the strings
exceeds 65000 characters whereupon the compression fails. By fails, I mean
that if I concatenate two identical encoded strings of 32400 characters and
compress them I get a compressed length of a bit over 32400 but if the
strings are 32500 each the compressed length is a bit over 65000.

I've tried doing this with non-encoded strings and it seems to work fine so
I'm guessing it has something to do with the fact the the individual encoded
strings have very little internal redundancy (if that makes sense).

Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this 'problem'?

Cheers,

Terry...

Re: Code like a girl...

2007-03-05 Thread john
Mark,
One of the best compliments I ever got about a software program that I had
written was from another programmer. After watching me demo the software
interface he looked at me kinda strange and said this may sound weird, but
that looks somehow, beautiful.
As we were talking about maritime security, data encryption etc. at the time I
was rather chuffed...

Re: Code like a girl...

2007-03-05 Thread Andre Garzia

Mark,

you know, I do think like that too. My little list function, a silly
function I built out of necessity is the very best and most elegant
function I ever wrote.

function list
local tList
repeat with x = 1 to paramcount()
  put param(x) cr after tList
end repeat
delete char -1 of tList
return tList
end list

It does a simple thing, it picks an arbitrary number of parameters
and return them as a cr delimited list, very good for looping things
such as years. I don't know if that classifies as girl code but I
think that function is at least cute.

sometimes I read code by some luminaries here on the list that look
so fine that I want to print them and stack them on my wall... I
actually did that once with some scheme code which was the only time
I understood what call/cc did.

Cheers
andre

Re: XP and Vista question

On the question of whether it's technically possible to run Vista under
virtualization, this author at Macworld.com of course never actually
tried, but notes that he had a dream about doing so, and reports what
happened in that dream:
