[On-Rev] You may laugh at me...

Yesterday I was struggling to obtain a mere "Hello World" with On-Rev --
with no luck!

I copied the excellent Sarah's page on publishing a slideshow, and I saw
no photos...

A tried a simpler model, with no luck though -- until I realized that in
order to be parsed my file had to have a .irev extension, instead of
.html, even though it is a html file !!!

Certainly, it is in the docs ;-))

This is a mailing list, and about 18 months ago the runrev.com site
(or some other domain) established forums to handle the various
topics, such as newbie, database, graphics, what-Rev-should-have, etc.

Occasionally it will seem that a thread will never end, yet only be of
interest to a very few, thus, "wouldn't it be nice to have a forum
that would put all the newbie content in a place they can find it"

The downsides are that the everyday use of this list fits into the
workflow, rather than a forum you need to visit and do searches or
copious navigation. I only go to forums when I have to do research,
not stay informed. Fortunately there are those who post to forums
with enough good content that they do become a resource.

My opinion is that some organization that wants to catalog good
conversations and help content should collect this information and
organize it to boost their ability to help new users.

Re: on-Rev updates.

I would VERY MUCH like to see an on-rev app update. My last access to my
on-rev account via the app was May 5 when SSH was turned on for my
account. Since then it has been FTP only. As a result I've stopped using
on-rev until the app is fixed.

Thanks -

soon ? Been 6 weeks now, any idea when this support will be added ?

In general, it's been 5 weeks since the last update to the onrev
client. Any chance of an update soon ?

Or of a schedule for when there might be one ?

I'm tempted to write various tiny tools to make the onrev client
easier, or better, to use - but don't want to do that if a new update

Yeah, but forums are horrible.
PLEASE could we have a way to sign up to receive all forum posts by
email - I'd be willing to log in to the forum to post replies, but as a
way to receive new messages, this has to be the least convenient scheme
imaginable.
For example, information about accessing sites placed at the root level of
your hierarchy (that I just reposted here) was originally posted to the
on-Rev forums on Apr 24.

The sad thing is that, even knowing that, I couldn't find your post in
10 - 15 minutes of searching the forums, though when I did eventually
find it, it was very helpful.

[Now if it was just an email archive, I could use all kinds of favourite
search tools :-]

However, we have no problem with folks discussing on-Rev here. The use-rev
list is very simply for "using Revolution." And we consider our product to
be the language, not merely the desktop IDE. The on-Rev service is obviously
a Revolution-based product. Just because it's a subscription service doesn't
matter; people obviously discuss Enteprise-specific issues, even though not
everyone owns Enterprise. So consider discussions about on-Rev officially
on-topic.

Bill Marriott wrote:

Hi Alex,

Actually, you can.

If you get the latest on-Rev client, you'll notice a drop-down menu in the
upper-right, "on-Rev Project."

This menu lists the sites you can edit. This list is drawn from the
/.ireviam/sites.txt file on the server. Just edit this file and you'll be
able to access the folders you need.

Thanks Bill - got that working now. Only after a very frustrating
struggle with line endings. It fails semi-silently if you put in CRLF
(i.e. char(13) + char(10) ) for the line ending rather than just LF
(i.e. char(10)), before uploading (with FTP Commander). I confess I get
confused by the different line ending combinations on different systems,
but this was a simple "hit return then save" in a Windows text editor
(emacs), followed by the obvious upload.
In a future version of the on-Rev client, the information will either be
pulled down automatically from the server or you'll be able to configure it
in the client.

Cool! Thanks again

OT: MySQL Open/Close question

2009-05-29 Thread stephen barncard
I've been both working with MySQL and on this list for some time but never
asked about this:
How much overhead is involved with opening and closing a MySQL connection?
Before I run some benchmarks I'd like to get other opinions.

For instance, in an app I have a recursive handler than may make upwards of
66 queries in rapid succession. Each query depends on the previous query for
the next. I want to see this information returned as soon as possible.

At this time I just try to keep the connection open with a ping every few
minutes. This works well on my machine, but working with a MySQL server on
the net tends to disconnect, even though the timeout at the server is set to
a high number.

If I would open and close the connection for each of the rapid queries,
isn't that generating more work for the server? Or does it really matter?

What's the 'best' way of dealing with opening / closing' in MySQL?

Re: Re: mouse gestures

2009-05-29 Thread Malte Brill

Thanks Terry. :)

Tom: Thanks for the kind words.

> I wonder if adding the distance would slow it down?

I doubt. It might depend on what you want to collect, though I don´t
think so. The lib already polls the distance from the last recorded
x,y position to the mouseloc. If you hook in a script local var that
you reset on libGestMouseDown and then on libGestMouseMove x,y add to
that var you should be good. distance is implemented into the lib
already, so that should be pretty straightforward. It could look like
this:

-- new local here

local lDistanceTraveled

on libGestMouseDown pButton
if pButton <> 3 then exit libGestMouseDown
if lSensivity is empty then put 10 into lSensivity
set the uStartGesture of me to the mouseloc
put item 1 of the uStartGesture of me into lOldX
put item 2 of the uStartGesture of me into lOldY
put empty into LGestureList
put 0 into lDistanceTraveled
end libGestMouseDown

on libGestMouseMove x,y
if the uStartGesture of me is empty then exit libGestMouseMove
local tDist,tAngle
put distance (lOldX,lOldY,x,y) into tDist
put findAngleX(lOldx,lOldY,x,y) into tAngle
if tDist>lSensivity then
  add tDist to lDistanceTraveled
--[snip]

function libGestLastDistanceTraveled
  return  lDistanceTraveled
end libGestLastDistanceTraveled

Now you could call libGestLastDistanceTraveled() on libGestDone and
would be set :)

Would love to see what you come up with. :-)

Cheers,

Malte

Don't know about the menubar stuff, but did you really mean to have

You have to get a little tricky with how you reorder when groups are
involved. When relayering a child control you have to build a list of
all controls that are siblings and then set the layer of each to the
layer of the parent group + 1 until all of the siblings are in the
order you want. But using the layer of the parent group + 1 the
ordering doesn't get messed up.

The handler that does this in the stack I posted is SetLayerWithinGroup.

Contracted menuBar question

2009-05-29 Thread DunbarX
Today I finished the Rev version of my HC development gadget, and uploaded
to revOnLine. It is a stack that tracks and sets properties in other stacks,
useful especially at the beginning of a project. New and improved.

But when I have the stack in front, its menu reduces to "File", "Edit" and
"Help", with all menuItems disabled. I never touched the menubar in this
stack. All other stacks show the full default menubar (or the ones I made for
them).

For the stack in question, clicking anywhere in the rev toolbar brings back
the full suite of menus; I have to do this every time I want to do
somehing, for example, to save it.

I show nothing in the menuBuilder. It is typical of a new stack.

It has to be something simple. As usual. Thanks in advance.

Yes, it is possible. I just uploaded a stack to RevOnline that has
some handlers that will relayer controls while protecting hierarchy.
The handlers included in the stack script:

MoveControlAfterControl
MoveControlBeforeControl
MoveControlToBeginningOfGroup
MoveControlToBeginningOfParent
MoveControlToEndOfGroup
MoveControlToEndOfParent
MoveControlTowardsBackOfParent
MoveControlTowardsBeginningOfParent
SetLayerWithinGroup
SetLayerWithinParentGroup

You should be able to accomplish just about any sort of reordering you
would want with one of the above handlers.

Look for "Relayer Selected Control" in the Utility category. I *think*
the handlers in the stack script are the latest versions. If you run
into any problems let me know.

Malte,

Love this little library. Very cool.

I would like to trap the starting mouse position and finish mouse
position to get a distance traveled. I would use this for short medium
and long gestures.

Your library seems very responsive, I wonder if adding the distance
would slow it down?

I made a stack that ties the mouse gesture to the backgroundColor of
the stack and can slide colors left and right and back or up down etc.
What fun.

Now to build one for images and to animated swiping left and
right...

Thank you Malte for the inspiration.

go stack URL "http://www.derbrill.de/fun/libMouseGestures.rev";

This lib enables you to implement mouse gestures in your own stacks.
Just start using the stack by issuing:

start using stack "libMouseGestures"

To tell a control or card to listen to gestures you need to set a
custom property of that control or card to true:

set the libGest["listenToGestures"] of this card to true

Now the card is listening to gestures. A gesture is performed by
rightclicking and dragging (or control clicking and dragging for
those with a one button mouse) To react to a gesture trap the
libGestDone message generated by the lib. The drag directions are
send as a parameter in form of a semicolon delimited list e.g.

up;left;downright

The stack has 3 cards with example script to react to gestures.

This one was hammered together quickly. Much room for improvement.
Hope you like it. If anyone feels like improving on it I´d like to
see the changes.
