Hi Ruslan.

2 things weigh against your assessment. First, one of the databases is  
remote and it happens to be the one I am querying 1 record at a time.  
The second thing is that to my knowledge you cannot create joins  
between 2 tables in different databases. The source database is a  
local file based SQLite database to further complicate matters.


I want to employ a method that could work with databases of 1000  
records or 1,000,000 records. To do that means I cannot risk memory  
overflow in runrev by huge query results. For this particular  
application I would never hit that limit, but what if I want to take  
the functionality of my data import module and make it available by  
itself?it needs to work in all situations or not at all. That's how I  
think.


My goal here is to import/merge data from a Spiceworks database of  
devices, software and other things. But in the future it could be  
anything. I am learning the limitations of querying remote SQL  
servers. For this application I think a local SQL server would be much  
better, but for the dev phase where I am out and about with my laptop  
on-rev will suffice.

What will happens if tomorrow you will need 500 queries?
Your Users will wait 50 seconds?

Even 10 sec of WAIT is terrible for today for user IMO

Well I discovered what my problem was. I commented out the method I employed 
which used sqlYoga for all the queries, and wrote a new method using only RevDB 
API calls. The sqlYoga method took about 1 to 1.5 seconds per iteration, so for 
100 single record queries, let's say roughly 2 minutes. The RevDB method took 
less than 10 seconds for 100 queries. 

I guess what I am saying is that if you need to do lots of small queries like I 
am doing, and you don't mind learning a little SQL, the RevDB commands and 
functions are going to be a TON more efficient. But if you are doing a few 
queries here and there, the performance hit would be minimal, and sqlYoga can 
save you enormous amounts of trouble learning SQL and get you going much 
quicker.

Hello,

I have made a virtual keyboard where the user can move each key when  
holding controlKey.
All is Ok, but I need to change geometry of each key to follow the  
bottom of the stack.

(I want to open the keyboard on the bottom of my main stack)

The user can still move each key but when I resize the keyboard  
stack , the key return to there previous vLocation.


Can anybody help me with that ?

Thanks. The right and left arrow keys should do two things in my script. If 
they are pressed together with  the shift Key, they navigate to the first card 
of the next and previous bg, respectively. Without the shift key they should do 
what you just described. But I just made it work by commenting out my whole 
stack script except for the arrowKey handler. Now at least I know where the 
problem is and hope to find out. Thans again.

that the problem is in the stack.  However, I  converted the same  
stack to Supercard and that same script (the long one) works in SC,  
as well as in Hypercard. I did a search for arrowKey in the search

This is the default behavior for arrowkeys. If you have navigationarrows 
set to true (which you said you do) then the up and down arrows 
basically do a "go back" or a "go forth". When the stack closed, it was 
likely popping to another stack to go to a card there, which you had 
probably visited recently.


Since you are getting the default arrow behavior instead of the scripted 
one, that tells me that your arrowkey message isn't reaching your 
handler for some reason. My first thought was that you might be using a 
card group instead of a background group (and as an HC convert, that's 
something you'll want to read up on,) but since it's an HC import that's 
unlikely unless you've added some groups since you imported the stack.


Because the script works in a new stack, you're right it's probably 
something in that particular stack. I agree that you should probably set 
the hcBehavior of the stack to false; you don't need that in Rev and it 
may clear up some issues. You can still continue to refer to bgs and 
controls the way you are used to, though you'll probably change that 
later as you get used to Rev.


About the advice to separate the data from the interface -- it's good 
advice. Rev isn't meant to use cards as a database. But to be honest, I 
wouldn't worry about that for now. If you have under 5,000 cards in the 
stack it will work just as it does in HC and I'd keep that structure 
until you've learned a little more about Rev. One thing at a time. If 
this stack is just for your own use, you may not want to change its 
database structure at all. I still use a number of old HC stacks in Rev 
that keep databases -- for example, I have an address book stack with 
one record per person and it works just fine. I don't even know 5,000 
people. :)


If you can't isolate the arrowkey problem, feel free to upload the stack 
somewhere and post a link to the list. You'll probably get a lot of 
solutions once we can see the scripts.

Andre, I opened the stack with Media, but no luck. However, I created a new 
stack and it worked (the short one). It seems obvious that the problem is in 
the stack.  However, I  converted the same stack to Supercard and that same 
script (the long one) works in SC, as well as in Hypercard. I did a search for 
arrowKey in the search box and found it only  once, in the stack script.

I have to apologize Haroldo, the logic in your script is correct!

But maybe "go next cd OF THIS BG" is making Rev choke somehow?
Since "...of this bg" is genuine HyperTalk after all...

My experience favours rawKeyDown:

I had also tested it this way. I have just done it again with another  
new mainstack. But the result is different from what you get. At step  
4) the open cell closes, but the next cell does not open.
I then replaced the dataGridLib.rev in my Toolset with a fresh copy I  
had downloaded and now it works as it should. It has happened before  
to me that the dataGridLib.rev  somehow got a bit off and after  
replacing it was ok again. I didn't think it would be the case this  
time as all other datagrid stuff worked beautifully.


So problem solved,

In the current release version of the data grid there are two issues  
when performing a custom sort within SortDataGridColumn.


The first is that you can't set the dgIndexes property in order to

performing a custom sort.

Everyone gets frustrated from time to time Barry! It's actually really hard
to communicate via email, a problem with a graphic interface you have, and a
language you are learning - so the result can often be - well frustration :)

It's great to post questions, especially if you can copy and paste some code
snippets so people can give concrete help back. And remember that if you are
having a problem - you can bet that there will be several other people with
the same problems - so a clear post will not only help you but them as well.
So thanks for posting!

NB - if I were learning, I'd certainly look into adding "code completion".
GLX2 provides this, and I "think" there is even a free plugin they provide,
if you don;t want to buy their editor which as a user I'd highly recommend.

to ask a question somebody throws in an example, to somebody else, which 
answers it! That's why I read all the digests every day and just wait for the 
tip I need to turn up, although it makes me feel like a lurker which is a name 
I don't like.
I just wanted to acknowledge this and say  thanks to ALL of you 
for the kind help. It may be a slower method of learning but it's certainly 
more enjoyable than wading through the Docs. Also the Docs don't have backchat

It has a feature called 'clairvoyance' (= reading your thoughts).  This is
something like code-assist in other programming environments.

I haven't used GLX2 myself for the last 6 months or so because I was getting
a lot of crashes with Rev on Windows and Linux, so I went  back to using
plain old Rev on OS X.

There may be a demo version you can try to see if you like the way it works.
 Personally, I think it is quite wonderful, and I do miss its features.

templates:

I initially exported primitives from Open Office Org. Draw as PNG
images [these do not contain transparent areas], then opened them in GIMP,
sprayed the white [i.e. would-be transparent areas] with PINK, and then
selected the pink, layered that onto a metallic template, deleted the 
pink, leaving a metallic shape - then saved as a PNG.

with them will allow me to end up with PNG images that behave themselves
with Runtime Revolution.

(my favourite composer) with my wife - and tomorrow I have to sort out

The only 2 things that can be said in RR's favour 
(as opposed to PASCAL and Co.) are:

1. the programming language can (but doesn't always!) resemble a 
real, spoken language.

2. objects 'walk around with their own code' (c.f. Visual Basic 5).

I teach an intro to RunRev (3 x 90 minutes) as part of a
"Summer of Fun" English course (sorry about the awful title,
but what else do you call that sort of course?)for kids who 
already have a fair bit of English. Without a modicum of English 
the kids would be lost.

As a experiment, I got BBC BASIC running inside some
BBC Micro emulators

and got some kids going with that. Their only, initial
objection, was that they had become dependent on a GUI
and felt "funny" with a command line: after a few gruff
"Grow Ups" they got on with things. Now they preferred RR,
but only from the point of view that they could make
visual programs; they didn't really see the programming
language as particularly easier.

Of course if one wants one can go all the way to those
"programming languages" where all one does is drag building
blocks around a screen. However, my experience teaches me that while
kids can rapidly get a blood-rush to the brain by getting
working 'programlets', they learn little or no transferable
skills; take them from that and shove them in front of a machine
with RR, or BASIC, and they are stuck fast, back at ground zero.

What has to be admitted by the "I want it now, and preferably
with no effort at all" brigade is that everything comes at a price:
and I, for one, don't want to spend my old age in a world inhabited
by people who can't or won't make a mental effort for anything.

All the members of this Use-List have dragged themselves through the
learning curve of at least one programming language (err, what do you 
call it again; RevTalk, Revolution, Transcript, and so on); and, like it
or not, that is a necessary part of the process of understanding how
programming languages work. And, without that sort of understanding,
however "user-friendly" a language/RAD is, sooner or later one is
going to come up against a socking great mental wall.

I usually spend the first 60 minutes with the computers turned OFF,
and play around with lots of yoghurt pots and beans 
(the Container Metaphor); and talk a lot of rubbish about production
lines in factories. Plus, prior to that, throw slide-rules at the kids so
that Mathematics moves out of the computers and calculators into
their brains.

I am sick to death of people who go on
a course and then inform me they can program computers because they
can read their e-mail, type a letter in Word, and run up a spread-sheet
in Excel.

Frankly, 'programming' by dragging virtual LEGO blocks around is not
programming; unless, of course, you consider the ability to knock up
a power point presentation the peak of programming skills!

As every Bulgarian child, supposedly, is taught English at school (and
the 'supposedly' is how I make my money), there should not be a
particularly high barrier for teenagers to jump over with RR.

The barrier, in Bulgaria, comes from the fact that educational-method 
is still rooted in the 'swot-and-regurgitate' school of thought that
Britain abandoned in the 60s. This stifles the type of abstract
and creative thought that is needed for good programming (try and
make a concrete model of a for-next loop).

However, in Bulgaria there is hope, as education can move into the space
that in Britain (amongst other places points-west) was abandoned for
the effortless pap that now passes for education.

Sorry about the rant; but I do feel extremely strongly about the
above points.

it does not supply the sentences; that is to say, it allows us an awful

Use-List, where many people have come up with many solutions to a single
problem - this is fantastic. I, for one, have never had an urge to live
in a totalitarian state (especially as I live and work in a country that used 
to be a totalitarian state, and is still, 20 years later, suffering, 
considerably, from the psychological aftermath), in fact one of the reasons
I like life in Bulgaria rather than Scotland is that society is not becoming 
increasingly rule-bound. Nobody can accuse Runtime Revolution of being
rule-bound! And, ultimately it is psychologically healthier for us to
retrace parts of inventing the wheel (hence the collection of slide-rules down 
in my school, which I force on my pupils for 1 day a year).

I had this problem also, and various people on the list suggested the  
solution. You have to cover all the ways you can quit from a  
standalone, on both platforms. Here's the thread I saved:

Peter,

When you use the Quit menu item, Mac OS X sends an event to  
Revolution. You can catch this message with the AppleEvent handler or  
the shutdownRequest handler. On Mac OS X, I prefer to use the  
AppleEvent handler most of the time.


If you use either the AppleEvent handler or the shutdownRequest  
handler without a pass command, the application will not quit by  
itself (you can also lock messages and issue the quit command).


When you press command-Q, the Quit menu item should work just like  
when you use the mouse to select this menu item and you can catch the  
AppleEvent and shutdownRequest messages again. However, your script  
may catch the commandKeyDown message. If you don't pass this message  
with the pass command, your application may not quit.


There are versions of Revolution that don't pass the commandKeydown  
message because of a bug. There are also versions that don't pass the  
AppleEvent message.


If you are using Rev 2.8.1, problems with quitting are probably due  
to a script.

Where to put the handlers depends on the structure of your stack  
system. You want them high enough up in the hierarchy to trap the  
messages no matter where the user is when the quit/close is

At first sight, but I may be wrong, hiding and showing just involves  
a screen refresh but does not set any data and does not make the  
engine sending close/open messages, etc. so it could appear faster.

The best could be to test?

is approximately 400 x 600 pixels in size.  My question is which  
would be faster, having the frames be separate image objects and  
using hide/show; or having just three image objects that draw their  
contents from images on another card with a repeat loop and something  
like...


Put image "p1punch" & frameNo of Card 2 into image "Player1Main"?

Speed is important because we are starting to reach the limit of the  
computers' ability to display the images.

This is all initialization stuff that should not prevent the stack  
from opening in some form or other, AFAICT. And it opens fine on my  
G4 mac and my wife's Intel mac, both running OSX 10.4.1 (I guess  
that's Tiger, not Panther as I said before). Any ideas anyone?


A different puzzle (or maybe not?): When the build is done, if I copy  
the mac version of the standalone to a different folder to force the  
finder to recognize the custom icon, that doesn't work, I still have  
the generic mac app icon. After some fiddling, I found that the  
Revolution.icns file that the standalone builder creates in the app  
bundle appears to be corrupt -- at least it crashes IconBuilder when  
I try to open it. But if I make a copy of my custom .icns file  
(created with IconBuilder) and rename it "Revolution.icns" and  
substitute it in the bundle for the one that Rev created, the icon  
then appears when I copy the app to a different folder, and all  
appears well. Has anyone else seen this? Could this be related to the  
above problem of the app not opening for some people?

Thanks. I used Iconographer to make a .icns file and after some
tweaking got the icon to show up. Problem solved. Now on to creating
a Windows icon



Iconographer can do that too. Just load your OS X icon file and save
as, choosing the Windows .ico format.

having a good way to handle other scripting languages is important,
IMHO.

Depends on what your referring to. If you are talking about keyboard
shortcuts in Rev IDE, or using AppleScript (and I believe the Windows
equivalent or other programs like perl) to copy data to the clipboard and
then use Rev to manipulate it, unfortunately there is a long history of this
being a 'intermittent' hard to reproduce problem. Although for keyboard
shortcuts the usual response is use the menu items, as these reliably work

Struggling with AppleScript.

All I want to do is run a script that opens a finder folder from a  
path (i.e. Macintosh HD:Users:MeUser:Desktop:myFolder:).


Well, this morning it works (after a reboot).  Last night it  
wouldn't.  Same exact script... from Script Editor and from SuperCard  
(oops).


Also, and I have no idea if this is related, copy and paste is not  
working (on my 1GHz PowerBook PowerPC G4 10.4.11).  Also, before my  
reboot this morning, my computer wouldn't open folders from the Doc  
Bar.  What could these problems be caused by?  Any ideas?

Yes, but only for certain chars that would cause problems in queries 
like a single quote. If you have carriage returns, you'll have to 
replace the CRs with some other character for storage, and then convert 
them back when you retrieve the data.

I am having an issue that I know was addressed in a previous post but  
I cannot seem to find it. I have established some functions to work  
with mySQL databases, and all is working fine except that whenever I  
build an SQL statement with values that include commas, carriage  
returns and the like, it hoses the sql statement. Isn't there a way  
of delimiting reserved characters in an sql statement? Something like  
preceding them with a backslash?

You can't do it with Revolution directly, but there is a work-around here:



Shakobox only works with QuickTime musical instruments, and is a bit 
easier on Macs than on Windows. On Windows, writing to a file works best 
(writing to console is broken, I think.) The original author is no 
longer supporting this, so it is now offered as-is.

I think you need to use the database specific queries for this  
information.  Here are ones for mysql, sqlite and postgresql (I  
*think* the postgresql one is right):


put "mytable" into pTable

SWITCH theDBType# get query to extract table info
CASE "mysql"
put "SHOW FULL COLUMNS FROM `" & pTable & "`" into theSQL
break
CASE "sqlite"
put "PRAGMA table_info(" & quote & pTable & quote & ")" into 
theSQL
break
CASE "postgresql"
		put "SELECT column_name FROM information_schema.columns WHERE  
table_name = '" & pTable & "'" into theSQL

break
END SWITCH

Using one of the above queries and open a cursor.  You should then  
get one record for each field.

Thanks Roger!  Yes, I do plan to incorporate support for the Mac & Windows Icon 
formats (I don't have linux, nor do I want to *try* to have it).  It will be a 
little tricky as I don't really understand the formats in plain text, but I'll 
figure it out.  If I can't, there's a lot of wonderful free programs I can 
incorporate that will do it for me. :)

This may be a nice feature for future Revolution releases. Auto Field  
Formatting and validation. It's a lot of work to do this though, I  
know. It just seems ugly from an overhead perspective to trap for  
every keydown at this high a level in every field for which you want  
it. I may end up writing some scripts that check for properties of  
objects and respond according to what is found there.

This turned out to be a text entry box not set up right

how do you set the text entry box to only up to 3 numbers and no CR?



Put this into the fields script:

on keydown tKey
  if tKey is not a number then
 exit keydown

 ## This way only number will pass
 if the num of chars of me < 3 then

  else
   beep ## or whatever
  end if
end keydown

Hi Ken...

Actually, dividing the number of nodes by ten gave me the number of 
attributes(I had ten nodes under each attribute). I was using this to determine 
which attribute to "navigate" to once the user selects "Next."  (At this point 
in my learning I was not familiar with revXMLNextSibling and 
revXMLPreviousSibling :-)

Then I added the deleteXMNode and my navigation strategy was all for not. 
Then... I learned how to use the revXMLNextSibling  and revXMLPreviousSibling 
and everythings great!

If it would help anyone here are scripts I'm using now to navigate through XML 
info:

Just curious, John... why did you need to divide the number of child nodes 
by 10 and add 1 to get the new node number? Wouldn't it just be (the number 
of children + 1) ?

to actually paste size 10 text in any font -- ah, Microsoft!) -- it gives the 
proper formatting as specified in the formatting field.

I'm still curious about the failure of the htmltext function to include font & 
size info. Is the documentation just plain wrong?

set the textFont of char 1 to -1 of fld "formatPrintText" to "Bookman Old Style"

launch letterPath with wordpath

This still gives a paste (into Word for OSX, or into a hypercard stack, or into 
Word 4 for OS9) in the textFont and textSize of the default stack properties, 
not what I set the properties of the field text to. I even tried using

set the clipboarddata["html"] to the htmltext of char 1 to -1 of fld 
"formatPrintText"

and that doesn't do it either.

(Just for fun, I tried setting the stack textFont/textSize properties to empty, 
and my paste then was in Lucia Grande size 11 -- hunh?)

Next experiment:

put theHdr into fld "formatPrintText"
set the textFont of char 1 to -1 of fld "formatPrintText" to "Bookman Old Style"
set the textSize of char 1 to -1 of fld "formatPrintText" to "10"
put the htmlText of char 1 to -1 of fld "formatPrintText" into fld "testFld"

The rev documentation says (under HTMLtext):

When you set the text properties of a field, the text it contains has no 
styling of its own, it uses inheritance of the field's properties to 
give an appearance of styling. Therefore, when you copy that text, there 
is no particular htmltext assigned to it.

To fix that, set the styling of the actual characters in the text 
itself, which does assign html properties to the text:

set the textfont of char 1 to -1 of fld "formatPrintText" \
  to "Bookman Old Style"
set the textsize of char 1 to -1 of fld "formatPrintText" to 10

This should give the results you are looking for.

This is what I use in one of my solutions:

put fld "quiz_item1" & tab into fld "data field" of stack "data sample"
put fld "quiz_item2" & tab after fld "data field" of stack "data sample"

Then write out, etc., etc.

If you want the data to go to the next line instead of being  
separated by tabs then


put fld "quiz_item1" & return into fld "data field" of stack "data  
sample"
put fld "quiz_item12" & return after fld "data field" of stack "data  
sample"

What is the correct syntax for Rev to append data to the next line in a text 
file?

I have a quiz in a standalone, and when the participant finishes, the file 
needs to save.  the next particpant's scores should go on the next line.  I use 
a button at the end of the quiz:

you can do so, but then you will have to "load" that stack and NOT  
just "go" to it!

Your information allowed me to solve the problem on a pure PC + XP

But did not resolved the trouble with Soft PC

It did change something but not all characters .

characters are concerned but screwed  with Special characters as " &  
and so on.

Hi Charles,

Good on you! (sorry, I spent 2 years in Australia).

The gallery was getting so big that by default I only show the recent  
additions to the gallery. To see the metadata writer, you have to use  
the top menu and select "added any time" and push on the "go"  
button.  Alternativily, you can use the link below:



Point taken, I will find a way to have this stack always appear in  
the gallery.

I thought I'd upload my (man is it ever) noncommercial app, the  
English Metrics Tutorial, to your education site; but I don't see  
the "metadata file creator" advertised on that page. (I'm using  
Safari, if that makes a difference.) So I'm not sure what steps to  
follow.
