Re: Open printing to PDF bug?

2010-09-25 Thread Dar Scott
Bug reports should be crisp and address a particular bug. One can
add details to a existing bug report or suggest changes in parts.
Additional reports for the same bug should not be made. Often
though, it is only after the fact that it is clear that two bugs are
the same. Fortunately, it is possible for the bug wranglers to mark
a bug as a duplicate of another.

I think there are changes coming in the reporting of bugs, so that
may not exactly apply.

set the printscale to 1.1
open printing to pdf "test.pdf"
-- add error check here
print this card from 193,90 to 833,570
-- add error check here
close printing
end mouseUp

And I get the right part of my images, rectangles and fields cut off. It
cuts off at the unrotated paper width.

This works for me:

  set the printpapersize to "595,842"
  set the printPaperOrientation to "landscape"
  set the printmargins to 18,18,18,18
  set the printScale to 0.85
  open printing to pdf "test.pdf"
print this card from the topleft of fld 1 to the bottomright of fld 1
  close printing

I got the cutoff until I scaled the printout down to 0.85; this likely
needs to be adjusted for each layout. The printmargins will also play a
role in how much it needs to be scaled. If the scaling is too large,
then it prints right off the edge of the page.

If William's original intention is to make the text larger for the
printout, then probably I'd increase the textsize of the field before
printing, then change it back afterward.

Re: Open printing to PDF bug?

2010-09-22 Thread Dar Scott

William,

I tried this:

on mouseUp
   reset printing
   set the printPaperSize to 595,842
   set the printPaperOrientation to "landscape"
   set the printmargins to 72,36,0,0
   set the printscale to 1.1
   open printing to pdf "test.pdf"
   -- add error check here
print this card from 193,90 to 833,570
   -- add error check here
   close printing
end mouseUp

And I get the right part of my images, rectangles and fields cut
off. It cuts off at the unrotated paper width.

It looks like it scaled right, but it has the cutoff.

I tried setting the rotated paper size after setting orientation, but
it is the same. I think with some other fiddling, parts showed up
but not all.

I'm not an expert at all the printing parameters, but it seems to me
you are right. It seems there is a bug. Maybe somebody with more
printing experience can say.

I set parameters for the entire print batch before "open printing to
pdf". Am I doing that wrong?

Try setting up for A4:
   set the printPaperSize to "595,842"

Try printPaperOrientation instead of printRotated.

If those don't work, try putting margins and printscale before the
batch.

I'm guessing. Mine works but I'm not using landscape. And I use
full-page printing.

Re: Open printing to PDF bug?

Hi folks,

My tests...

put "595,842" into thePaperSize
put "20" into theMargin

-- get the page area:
set the printMargins to theMargin,theMargin,theMargin,theMargin
put theMargin, theMargin, item 1 of thePaperSize - theMargin, item 2 of
thePaperSize - theMargin into destinationRect
-- print into that rectangle:
open printing to pdf "/Users/joss/Desktop/card_test.pdf"
print this card into destinationRect
close printing

With "20" into the margin is the best aproximation, some graphics inside are
a little small, so I print for a card game, and I need that the card have
the exact size. If I down the margin I get the real size but the bottom is
cutted.

Any idea?

Salut,
Josep

time ago. It might have changed in the mean time, but I don't expect it,
because QT uses Mac OS X-specific API's to do this.

if revBrowser can display webpages,

and most web-browsers can display PDFs .

On all platforms, you can display PDF files in the browser, but a PDF browser

You should check out , if you haven't already, the tempName

it's a prefab unique name provided for this purpose. It's an address that is
deep within libraries and will be automatically purged at some point in the
future.

You can use temporary files to store intermediate data, downloaded URLs, and
other material that is more conveniently placed in a file but does not need
to be saved permanently.
*
**Using the **tempName** function does not create the file, only gets a
suggested file name. Use the open file command to create the file.*
*
**The file name returned by the **tempName** function is one that doesn't
exist, so you can use it safely. If you need to create another file, use
the **tempName** function again to obtain a new file name.*
*
*The location of the temporary files depends on the operating system. Each
operating system provides its own location for temporary files.

Re: PDF import?

2010-05-07 Thread Peter Brigham MD
What I want to do is to import a PDF image into a stack as a
customprop. I anticipate using this for sensitive documents that will
need to be contained within a password-protected stack, and I don't
want the files themselves left on the user's disk drive. It looks as

then delete the file from disk when done. Is there any other way? Can
I print an image from a player control? Or even better, is there a Rev

You're absolutely right, there is one way to display PDFs in Rev and
it's very limited: on OS X only you can display PDFs inside of a
player control. This does not work on Windows or Linux, and as you
can imagine has a limited UI (you can't select text, for example,
and the page is rendered scaled within the player without scrollbars
of its own, so you'll need to put it in a group of you bother with
it at all).

Try this:

on mouseUp
ask file "Save printout as:" with "Print.pdf"
   put it into tFileName
if tFileName is empty then exit to top

set the printerOutput to "file:" & tFileName

   revShowPrintDialog false, false
revPrintField the long name of fld "TTEXT"

There are 2 ways to do this. If you have revEnterprise, you can use
the new "open printing to pdf" command which allows lots of extras
like setting author, title, keywords etc, as well as including links
and anchor to allow hyper-linking within the pdf.
If you don't have revEnterprise, or you don't need those features,
then you can set the printerOutput before printing. If you set this to
print to a file, then you will get a pdf on Mac and an XPS file on
Windows.

PDF doc name with revPrintText corrupted?

2010-02-09 Thread Tiemo Hollmann TB
Hello,

I am using revPrintText with Rev 3.5 on Win to print a fields text. When
selecting a printer everything is fine. When selecting a pdf-printer Rev
creates a pdf doc name from my stack title. My stack title has german
Umlaute and they get changed to weired signs in the pdf doc name, as if
there there is a problem with the Unicode or something like this. I tried to
use the revPrintText parameter "header text" in the hope rev would take that
header text as the doc name, but no effect.

Does anybody knows, if I can change the doc name when printing to pdf or to
change the charset or any other idea?

I know that there is the new pdf printing in 4.5, but I have to fix it in
3.5 with old style.

Thanks

Tiemo

the other two, but he Quickstart one failed and still fails.

OK, that's even weirder.

Prior to hitting the Send button my reply had nothing in it about:

Enter your Apple ID and password to view this document.

Yet another line that just magically appeared.

Weird.

So, just to clarify. I followed the link in your email to your blog page.
>From there I followed the Quickstart link to the iWork.com page. At that
point I got a simple webpage that stated (and this time I'll type it
myself):

Document doesn't exist.
The document your requested doesn't exist or is no longer active.

There were no buttons, no login prompts (I do have an Apple ID), nothing but
simple text and an apple logo at the bottom.

This was in Firefox. I just tried in Safari and it's basically the same,
although Safari had the waterwheel cursor (the one you get on intial startup
or shutdown) for about 5 seconds, under the Document doesn't exist line
before coming up with the last line about no longer active.

Re: View and print a PDF file from Rev

2009-12-30 Thread Josh Mellicker
Just FYI, the Acrobat Developer FAQ says:

How Can I Display a PDF File in an External Application Window?

There are several ways to have the Acrobat program display a PDF file in an
external application’s window. Acrobat must be installed on the system to view
a PDF file in your own application’s window.

Windows and Macintosh:

● The ExternalWindow sample plug-in demonstrates a live view of the PDF
file in a window created by the plug-in. You can extend this to display PDF
files in an external application window.

So, it looks like an extension could be created that would allow for PDF
display in Revolution.

Actually, it isn't the dictionaries that are corrupted, it's your
preferences file. Deleting that fixes the dictionary, but you have to
delete it every time you launch a different version of Rev. The better
solution is to install the latest 4.0. It fixes the problem permanently.

Re-4: PDF version of dictionary?

2009-11-18 Thread runrev260805
Yes, i know. But this was as a reply to Stephan Barncard´s
' I don´t see a pdf offered anyway.'

Even this 3.0 dictionary is a great source of information.

And although i am working with V4.0 now, i am using my
printed Dictionary version 3 very often.

It isn't too hard to make your own:

1. Download the MetaCard Setup stack from RevOnline. Open it in Rev.
Make sure all the Dictionary options are checked. Run the setup.

2. In Rev, open the MC Dictionary stack you just installed. Click
the Home button and import all the Rev dictionary entries. The "?"
button tells you how.

3. Edit the MC Dictionary stack script and add this handler:

-- JLG: export as HTML file
on exportDict
ask file "Name the HTML export file:"
if it = "" then exit exportDict
 put it into tFileName
 put "" into tP
 set cursor to watch
repeat with x = 2 to the number of cds
put the htmltext of fld "word" of cd x & tP & tP after tData
put the htmltext of fld "type" of cd x & tP & tP after tData
put the htmltext of fld "summary" of cd x & tP & tP after tData
put the htmltext of fld "main" of cd x & tP & tP after tData
put the htmltext of fld "see also" of cd x & tP & tP after tData
put tP & "" & tP after tData
 end repeat
 put tData into url ("file:"&tFileName)
end exportDict

4. Type "exportDict" into the message box. It only takes a second to
create the HTML file.

5. Open the new HTML file in a browser or in Word or anywhere else
you can display it. Print. In the OS X print dialog, choose to
create a PDF file. On Windows, you'll need a PDF print driver to do
that.

It isn't gorgeous but it's all there. You could edit the HTML (or
the export script) before printing to make it prettier.

I have a Sony 700 and it reads PDFs. If the PDF is an image, you can
resize it to any scale and then scroll it by moving the image around the
screen. If the PDF has flowable text, then the text will display as
pages on the screen without having to resize it. You can search and
annotate with the Sony 700. You can also set the text size to your
preference. The Sony eReader does not have an internet connection, but
I've never missed it. I load all my books from my Mac using the free
software Calibre, which will convert almost any format to any other
format, including Sony's. It will also convert PDFs to native text
documentation.

I chose the 700 because I wanted a backlight, but the 505 is good if you
read mostly in daylight. I don't know if the 505 accepts PDFs directly
but Calibre supports the 505, so it can convert PDFs if you need to.

I just tried converting the Rev User Guide from PDF to Sony's "lrf"
format, and it worked fine. It would also have worked on the Sony
without conversion.

I've been using ebook readers for years, and I love them. My last one
was worn down to the metal before I gave it up, I'd worn off all its
skin. I'm a strong advocate for saving trees, and I like the convenience
of being able to carry around hundreds of books in a device that is only
a few ounces.

Re: [OT] Anyone using an ebook reader with the RunrevDictionary PDF?

2009-11-05 Thread Marian Petrides

Matthias

I have the Kindle 2, Kindle DX and used to have a Sony 505.

I would recommend using the Kindle DX, since it will give you nearly
full size display of your PDF (albeit as a graphic PDF, not a reflowed
text PDF). I've tried the Sony 505 (same size screen as 600) but PDFs
were so small I couldn't read them. Same problem would be present if
the Kindle 2 were capable of native display of PDFs (without
conversion to AZW)--and I can't recall offhand if it even can.

Long story short, the only thing that does this adequately at present
is the Kindle DX. The only downside to reading PDFs on the DX is that
the page is displayed as a graphic not as reflowing text, so can not

Hi List,

Reply to myself... :)

I obtained print a PDF file without any dialog from the terminal using the
"lpr" command selecting one printer.

So this must be posible run using the shell function from rev.

To know what printers are available I can obtaing from "put the
availablePrinters into tPrinters" but this isn't the name of the printer in
the system.

How can now the printers name in the system to show to the user? I can know
it using "lpstat -p"...

revBrowser uses the browser control installed on your machine. On PC it uses
IE and on Mac it uses Safari. Whatever plugins you have installed for these
browsers will then work within revBrowser. So, if you have the Adobe reader
plugin installed for these browsers, then you can display PDF docs inside of
a rev window. Also, be aware that whatever settings you have for these
browsers will be the same when the control is used from revBrowser.

First, make sure you can just browse to the PDF doc just using IE on PC or
Safari on Mac. Make sure Adobe reader is set to display in the browser and
not outside the browser (this is in the settings of the Adobe plugin). Once
you know this is working, then you use revBrowser to bring up the browser
control inside of a rev window and when you browse to a web page or PDF doc,
it should display within the rev window just like it did when you used the
browser. As to printing a PDF, it is actually the adobe plugin that is doing
the printing, just like it does when it is running in the browser.

I don't have experience with Mac but on PC I can tell you it all works with
IE 6, 7 and 8. Usually any problems you may experience are due to the
version of the Adobe plugin. Maybe someone else can chime in with their
experience with Safari.

Aloha from Hawaii,

Jim Bufalini

If you can't find a workaround for the crash, the only other option I can
think of is to launch the PDF in Acrobat Reader:

  put into tFilePath
  launch document tFilePath

I have some code for displaying PDF pages in a Rev player, but as far as I
know, the resolution is limited to the screen so I don't think this would be
useful for you for printing.

From one of you previous posts, I understood that you wanted to turn

produce from scratch, what I propose is to

a) translate the HTMLtext of the field into a page description

b) can easily produce PDF without writing extra code

LaTeX can do that, it is freeware, it has a large community of users,

You could also output an HTML file and print from a browser, or use
RTF and produce PDF (with applescript, probably, or VB)

I know how to produce pdf files from a 'regular' Mac or Linux
program . . . come on, Peter, give me a wee bit of credit . . .:)

But I should like to have a universal method whereby I can print
directly from a text field in a RunRev stack/standalone to PDF
regardless of the platform the stack is running on.

For instance:

put field "X" into URL "file:test.pdf"

[which, bye-the-bye, produces a text file with the suffix .pdf]

which ACTUALLY produces a PDF file.

or:

open file "test.pdf" for write
write field "X" to file "test.pdf"

[which, bye-the-bye, also produces a text file with the suffix .pdf]

as one can EXPORT images as PNG, JPEG, GIF and so on, it would be
lovely if one could do something of the sort with text files:

write field "X" to file "test.pdf" as PDF

-
Imagine a RunRev stack that can cope with the complexities of
producing really decent texts using highly complex writing systems
such as those used in the Indian subcontinent; now, with unicode
and so on, that is perfectly reasonable, and that sort of program
can pump out html files with the end result.

BUT . . .

suppose, owing to the complexity of that sort of writing system,
coupled

with the fact that the unicode standard has not got designated slots
for all the written forms, the producer of the RunRev stack has had
to produce

his/her own, non-standard unicode font to cope with those problems.

The end result should produce PDF files (that embed the special
font) as
there is a very slim chance that an end-user/reader of such texts
would have

that specialist font on their system.

Hi Richmond
The solution I am currently implementing is an export of the htmlText
of a field to a LaTeX (text) file and then using the shell command
"pdflatex" && tFilePath to ouput pdf. It does not do the actual
printing.
There is also XeTeX which is a variant of TeX which implements support
for unicode input and AAT or OT fonts. It has been recently ported to
Windows and Linux.
Use of a LaTeX package enables creates hyperlinks and bookmarks int
the pdf output.
GUI applications are also available. All of this is freeware and
actively maintained. Resources are

general: http://www.tug.org/texlive/acquire.html
mac: http://www.tug.org/mactex/

here is a sample (temporary) code I use for experimentation. It
collects several fields of a card (from a dictionary stack) to produce
corresponding LaTeX code

-- TeX handlers and functions
function html2TeX theText
replace "" with empty in theText
replace "" with cr & cr in theText
   replace "" with "{\bf " in theText
replace "" with "}" in theText
   replace "" with "{\em " in theText
replace "" with "}" in theText
   -- special characters
replace """ with quote in theText
replace "	" with comma in theText
replace "&" with backslash & "&" in theText
-- here I get rid of unsupported tags
replace "<" with tab & "<" in theText
replace ">" with ">" & tab in theText
set the itemdelimiter to tab
put the number of items of theText into n
   repeat with i = n down to 1
  get item i of theText
if char 1 of it is "<" then
 delete item i of theText
  end if
   end repeat
replace tab with empty in theText
   -- deal now with < and >
replace "<" with "$<$" in theText
replace ">" with "$>$" in theText
   -- clean up cr's
put the number of lines of theText into n
   repeat with i = n down to 2
  get line i of theText
if it is empty and line (i-1) of theText is empty then
 delete line i of theText
  end if
   end repeat
   return theText
end html2TeX

-- collect fields. Entries are from the rev's dictionary

function card2TeX theCard
   goCard theCard
   put 1 into n
   put backslash & "section{" & fld "name" & "}" into line n of theText
put backslash & "label{" & the short name of this card & "}" after
line n of theText

   add 1 to n
put backslash & "paragraph{Type}" into line n of theText
   add 1 to n
put fld "type" into line n of theText
   add 1 to n
   put backslash & &quo

Try

I had to use this for a order entry application I wrote and it worked really
well. Plus you get great support from Jan Schenkel who is a frequent
