Re: Derby & Non-Derby

2006-05-23 Thread Edson Carlos Ericksson Richter

First of all, you are using derby on same VM or by network?

If you are using derby on same VM, then this explain difference - shared
memory comms is always fast than network.
Since Oracle (and other DBs) are not written in Java, they will use
Network comms.
There is docs showing this diffs in HypersonicSQL too - in process
execution and server based execution.

Richter

Tranql or my JDBC driver or Open EJB container. ??

I know, but I'm getting very high success running under 5.0 (either Sun

Hi!

I'm using Eclipse 3.11 with latest WTP and Eclipse Plugin (WTP

Whenever I right click web apps and ask "Run As" and select Geronimo, I
got Geronimo running, the WAR is deployed, I get message "Could not find
a client that is able to launch the selection" (not matter I choose Run
As over Project or over index.jsp).

Then I got to browser and type the app address, but I get error

   HTTP ERROR: 404

Not Found

RequestURI=/GT2006/

/Powered by Jetty:// /

Then I must to go into console and "Start" the web app WAR. After that,
app runs fine. I expect when I right click over project, the app is:

1) Deployed
2) Started
3) Default system browser or Eclipse internal browser is run pointing to
server address and port + context (ex: http://localhost:8080/MyContext).

Hopefully this can be resolved in the future. One possibility is due

rightsizing. One issue a colleague had during testing our builds was
that the permanent generation (reflective data for loaded classes) can
be exhausted. Although your application may be small geronimo has its
own classes too. The out of error memory will tell you if perm gen was
the issue, to workaround that

-XX:PermSize=128m -XX:MaxPermSize=128m

If you are on linux you can run jmap -heap and
it will tell you the permgen and other gc sizes.

I was using JDK 5 when I wrote my article

Re: Fixed context parameters

2006-01-24 Thread Edson Carlos Ericksson Richter

I'm not sure this it's a really good way for doing things.
In really, I used this because I didn't wan't to lookup values from
JNDI. It's easier to ask for context parameters.

But at the end, I relyied to much in this functionality from Tomcat.
In real, I should look at other solutions to customize behaviour of my
app, not using context parameters.
The unique real advantage Tomcat offer in this situation is because when
I redeploy the app, behaviour parameters don't are overwritten.

So, you have some kind of suggestion? System properties? What about 4 or
5 instances of same application, but with different values for parameters?

Thanks,

Richter

David Jencks escreveu:

We don't do anything like that. For us, servlet context params must

I would be willing to consider allowing them to be overridden in the
geronimo plan for that web app, but I don't think it's a good idea to
have a global override across web apps. You could try convincing me
otherwise :-)

Another mechanism you might consider is using system properties. We
have a gbean that lets you set as many system properties as you want,
and of course they are available to all applications. There's an
example of this gbean in the rmi-naming plan/configuration.

you need to use a separate jms plan. One convenient way to deploy
both your war and the jms resources together is to use what I call a
"synthetic ear" which is basically a geronimo-application.xml plan
that includes the geronimo-web and geronimo-resource plans as
"external" modules. There's an example in configs/uddi-tomcat where

The problem isn't really a DayTrader problem it just happens to

One way to correct this problem is to build Geronimo with 1.5.0 but

Three are working very well, thanks to help get on this list!

In any case, for either DB or JMS resources, you can go to the

You'll have to figure out which module holds the database pool or

connection factory in question, but usually it's pretty clear (either
because you named it when you deployed it on the command line, or
because the name generated by the console is based on whatever you
named the database pool, etc.).

Fixed context parameters

2006-01-21 Thread Edson Carlos Ericksson Richter

Hi!

I have app that users context parameters to define app behaviour for
each deployment. So, if I put context parameters inside web.xml I
running in the risk to override configuration for some server (what is
not desirable).

Under Tomcat, I used to define this kind of parameter in context.xml for
each deployment, like this:

  ...

  ...

So, even if I put something in web.xml for above parameters, Tomcat will
assume values defined in context.xml

There is something similar in Geronimo?

Re: Tomcat to Geronimo migration

2006-01-21 Thread Edson Carlos Ericksson Richter

Well, let's I explain:

I have a web app where administrator could organize users in logical
groups. Then, administrator delegates roles to these groups.
The "roles" table is fixed, and is exactly equal to roles declared in
web.xml, and administrator has no "window" to put new roles there.
The "groups" table isn't fixed, and administrator could create as many
groups as he wants, and put any user in how many groups he desires.

I solved the problem mapping my "roles" table to de server-roles, and
using the "select username, group from userGroups where username=?" as
"select username, role from autorizationView where username=?", and
creating the mappings like:

class="org.apache.geronimo.security.realm.providers.GeronimoGroupPrincipal"/>

class="org.apache.geronimo.security.realm.providers.GeronimoGroupPrincipal"/>

class="org.apache.geronimo.security.realm.providers.GeronimoGroupPrincipal"/>

So, for every role declared in web.xml, I have one role in "roles" table
and one mapping in geronimo-web.xml, so I can have variable number of
groups.

Thanks for clarifications. My web app is running as good as it run on
Tomcat right now.

Re: Tomcat to Geronimo migration

2006-01-21 Thread Edson Carlos Ericksson Richter

Well I see examples in two pages, but I'm not understand.

If I map roles to groups in geronimo-web.xml, I can't have dynamic
number of groups?
Or should I understand group as role, and I should map app roles to
server roles?

I think I'm making some confusion here, because my app has 5 tables:
users, groups, roles, userRoles, groupRoles. And I get everything from a
view that is a union of user roles and group roles to know what roles
user have...

Back to the problem, "group" is the term used by Geronimo to "app role"?

Thanks,

Richter

Re: Problems configuring DB pool 1.0

2006-01-21 Thread Edson Carlos Ericksson Richter

Advance (but still not works)!

I didn't fill "Database" field (keep it empty).

Now, I beign sent to "*Create Database Pool* -- Step 3: Final Pool
Configuration".

I fill in:

url =
"jdbc:microsoft:sqlserver://127.0.0.1:1433;DatabaseName=Biblio;SelectMethod=Cursor;"

Driver Status = /Loaded Successfully/
Pool min size = 2
Pool max size = 10
Blocking timeout (millis) = 5000
Idle timeout (min) = 10

click "Skip test and deploy". Nothing happens, pool is not created. On
server window I got following stack trace:

Re: Problems configuring DB pool 1.0

2006-01-21 Thread Edson Carlos Ericksson Richter

I tryied to import a jboss datasource (that works actually). On log appear:

23:31:24,656 WARN [DatabasePoolPortlet] Import Results:
23:31:24,656 WARN [DatabasePoolPortlet] 0 ignored

23:31:24,656 WARN [DatabasePoolPortlet] 0 not reviewed
23:31:24,656 WARN [DatabasePoolPortlet] 0 deployed

And in portlet, the import never got out of "Started" status... May be a
"ajax" issue?

It seems like the problem is that the SQL Server drivers need to have
a version in the file name. Such as:
repository/mssql/jars/foo-1.0.jar

However, you'll probably run into another problem afterward which is
that we don't currently let you select more than 1 JAR for the driver.
What you'll need to do to work around that is to select one of the
JARs and have the console generate a plan for you (without trying to
test the connection), then copy the dependency element in the plan for
the 2 other JARs and deploy the pool at the command line.

If you just want to get up and running quickly you can have Geronimo
download the jTDS driver to connect to SQL Server, and use that driver
instead.

Thanks,
   Aaron

Re: Problems configuring DB pool 1.0

2006-01-21 Thread Edson Carlos Ericksson Richter
Looking at log with more attention, I realized that I could select only
one JAR for the driver. So I'll extract all MS jars and put everything
in one JAR so it could be usable.

May be I should make a RFE to allow more than one JAR to create DB Pool?

JDK 1.6.0 to JDK 1.5.0 downgrade, plz help

2006-01-21 Thread Edson Carlos Ericksson Richter
After trying to run (unintentionally) Geronimo under JDK 1.6.0 I got
several erros starting under JDK 1.5.0.
For a first attempt, I deleted folder Work (/var/catalina/work). Is this
the correct behaviour? Or there is something else I should do? Could
this be in a FAQ?

The stacktrace is:

Tomcat to Geronimo migration

2006-01-21 Thread Edson Carlos Ericksson Richter

Hi!

First of all, I must say Apache products are the best. And I'm very
confident that Geronimo came to stay.
But as any very new product, lacks of high avaliability of docs and
tutorials (besides there are two PDFs with lot's of information I must
confess I had not time to read everything).

Well, I had working developing good software with Tomcat (since 3.1
days), and now Tomcat 5.5 has everything a developer could desire from a
product: easy install (just unzip or untar), exactly same config runs on
Windows and Linux, very easy to deploy (just put war on webapps) and
very stable (I have sites running Tomcat as webserver on linux for more
than a year without failures).

One things I love on Tomcat 5.5 is configuration, and the
separation "by context" (every context could have their own
authentication). Works like a charm for database authenticated users. I
have read on somewhere that Geronimo still not have this kind of support
(database auth users). Is this a reality, or this could be already
implemented? I ask this because it's a must have migrate all my apps to
Geronimo.

Best regards, and good work.
