Thanks for your quick turn around on this.

I would be more then happy to assist Jacques in managing stuff at nabble.
If it is doable and not too much difficult then can you please add me as a

Re: Searches done by default

2009-10-12 Thread Scott Gray
The order list screen shows recent orders already without having to
search. For the party manager, yes it might nice for about 5 minutes
but then after that you'll have 1000+ customers, suppliers, employees
etc. and showing the first page will provide absolutely no benefit
whatsoever (unless by pure dumb luck the record you wanted is present
within the first < 2% of the results).

Showing a no condition search will never save you several clicks, it
will always save you exactly one click (the search button).

To solve your last point about confusion with no results being shown,
ideally the results table wouldn't display unless a search has
actually been performed. That is a change I would be +1 for.

I wonder if we should not parametrize this in the DB and let it available in the

Then we could set it to yes by default and avoid people evaluating OFBiz to clic on search button each time they open a

We could also have an URL going to the preferences in each search to allow a

This is not related to lookup dialog boxes but only searches in plain pages.

You will have to change various ports in framework/base/config

You may want to change the bind address from 0.0.0.0 to the address of a
particular interface in ofbiz-containers.xml
and then change various ports for the connectors in that file. (For
instance, ajp/8009, bsh -9990, and http/https (8080, 8443).)

I think there's also a JNDI port (1099) and a change here probably requires
corresponding changes elsewhere.

Personally, I think it's a better bet to use Apache as the front-end and
redirect on a per-URL basis to a single appserver config.
There are many benefits from using mod-proxy+mod-rewrite or AJP.

We have several test / devel configurations of OFBiz, and use Xen VM's on
CentOS to manage them. Then it's just a simple
ProxyPass / Location config in Apache to give them outside names, and we can
do stuff like host-based authentication, and it's easy to move things
around.

I think I understand the disconnect. Based on that idea it makes sense
that you are frustrated.

No, there is no "Board of Directors" (except the ASF Board, but that's
still different). There is a Project Management Committee (PMC), but
the PMC is only responsible for general administration like voting on
new committers and PMC members, voting on releases and other major
project activities, and when necessary vote to resolve conflicts
(should be avoided whenever possible, and it usually is). In no way is
the PMC any sort of top-down management group. OFBiz has always been
this way, and the practice has become more formal now that the project
is part of the Apache Software Foundation. For more ASF details about
the PMC, please see:

http://www.apache.org/foundation/how-it-works.html#structure

In any case, the interesting part of a community driven project like
OFBiz is that the roles are defined differently. For example, you
mentioned in another email that you consider yourself an "outsider"
and in reality no one but you decides if you are an outsider or an
insider, and actually with so many different ways to participate those
terms don't mean much. In my opinion, you are very much an insider.

In a traditional top-down organization there are people with power who
tell other people what to do. The others do what they are told because
their motivation is influenced by money, fear, hope... or usually some
combination of these things.

A community-driven open source project, like OFBiz, is a purely
voluntary organization. Anyone can volunteer to become a "boss" and
try to get other people to do things. The trick is that you can't be a
"boss" in the normal meaning of the term, ie you can't just tell other
people what to do. The approaches that work here are collaboration and
to some extent influence through the power of ideas (and sometimes the
power of personality and position, but in a group of people like this
that usually causes problems instead of being helpful, even if not
intentionally used as people assume you are using it).

And so, we have the fun opportunity to work with others in a purely
voluntary way. We don't get a chance to do that much. Sometimes
companies work in that way to some extent, but usually managers try to
get around the difficult problems that arise when people believe they
are interacting on a voluntary basis. With government unfortunately
things are very much not voluntary. Perhaps they have been in
different times and places, but I'm not aware of any government that
exists like that now.

Helpful, actionable comments.

I'm just a little discouraged at how little testing is done with

Not actionable comments. One could look at the history and see who

the PMC any sort of top-down management group.

Re: Default theme ?

2009-10-12 Thread Jacques Le Roux

Hi Ruth,

Yes I already reported that please see
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/OFBIZ-2398

Maybe it's better to inform you that this theme was initially designed by Erik
Schuessler from BrainFood and then implemented by
Ryan Foster (mostly?) at HotWax Media. BTW this information may be found at the
bottom right of http://ofbiz.apache.org/
So, for now, we mostly rely on their skills for this kind of things, even if
everybody helps here and there. This was done in order
to have a more attractive UI for release 9.04. And we are all (at least I)
thankful for that!

This theme was also applied to the wiki, there were issue also in Confluence,
but we consider now that they are all resolved (you
may find issues in Jira by looking for Confluence for OFBiz project, check
comments)

The theme feature on both sides (back and front ends) was introduced by Bruno
Busco and enhanced by the team since then.

Unfortunatley a such effort was no done for the eCommerce, only Bruno gave a
theme wich is not complete yet. I think the meain
reason is that most of the time, companies with enough means prefer to build
their own design. And nobody has contributed a theme
because, apart small companies which keep the original design and adapt it,
most of the time the design is totally new and unique.

Thanks for you help

Jacques

From: "Ruth Hoffman"

Hi Jacques:
Another issue with the default theme:
Error messages are only displayed for a few seconds and then they disappear.
For example, I just tried to add a file to the
"GZ-NEWS-1MO" product using the Catalog Manager and I got an error which was
displayed for about 3 seconds. Not even enough time
to read the content of the error message. I know I can go to the log files and
review error messages, but there doesn't seem to be
much point in displaying error messages within the Catalog Manager if the user
can't read them as they are using the application.

Ruth

Re: Digital Products

2009-10-12 Thread Ruth Hoffman

Hi Alexander:
I will repeat some instructions I posted before:
One way to do this:

Use the Content Manager application to create a "Data Resource" for
each file. OFBiz "Data Resources" are similar to "meta-data"
descriptions for files or other electronic media used by OFBiz.

Use the Content Manager application to create a "Content" record for
each file. Content records point to "Data Resources."

Use the Catalog Manager application to create a "Product" for each
file that is associated with the "Content" record created above.

Using the "Prepare Content" link as suggested before has not worked for
me in the past. Perhaps it has been fixed. I haven't had time to check,
however I just tried using it to add a file to an existing PRODUCT and
was not successful.

If you want more information about how to use the Catalog Manager,
please consider purchasing my new book:
"Getting Started w/Apache OFBiz The Catalog Manager". See:
http://www.myofbiz.com for more specifics.

Ruth

Re: Default theme ?

2009-10-12 Thread Ruth Hoffman

Hi Jacques:
I just looked at the visual theme graphic/URL on trunk release 823826 so
that I could refresh my understanding of the various themes: [
https://localhost:8443/catalog/control/LookupVisualThemes]

All my comments are based on this release using Firefox on a MAC:

1) This url [https://localhost:8443/catalog/control/LookupVisualThemes]
does not layout correctly. While the graphics show up just fine, the
columns aren't working correctly using the default Bizness theme. So, I
will report this as an Jira issue later today.

2) Changing the font size helps, however there is a school of thought in
the online content world that suggests that the most important content
on a web page should be "above the fold", meaning that the user should
not be required to scroll down the page to find important information.
Lots of extra space between navigation links and form submit buttons is
more of a distraction then a help in many cases. Another problem with
this theme and zooming (changing the font size) with the browser is that
in some cases, content overwrites the table boundary visual borders.
Again, forcing the user to scroll to the right or left (assuming they
know to do that) while trying to locate important information.

3) A big problem for me with this theme is that the navigation to
webtools applications are hidden. The user is required to pull down the
"Applications" link and then, close it, which, unless someone already
knows what they were doing, is not an obvious action. A better approach,
IMHO to this is to use hovering to expose the hidden links.

These do not seem to be issues with the "Flat Grey" and original/4.x
theme/layout.

Ruth

Keeping the bizness time provide a more modern interface than the flat grey,

if everyone is zooming out the bizness theme, maybe we should thinking
about reducing the font/etc... sizes.
Keeping the bizness time provide a more modern interface than the flat
grey, and may be more attractive to new users.

But I'm also part of the ones who switch to bluelight or flatgrey...

project is growing and that is a good thing. But I caution everyone, bigger (and more) is not always better.

I plenty agree. On the other hand OFBiz OOTB is plenty of stuff because it's
intended to demonstrate and show all its possibilities.

While discouraged I'm not going to stop promoting and using OFBiz. IMHO, it is still unrivaled. These are but surface problems
that need attention - sooner rather than later. Since I am an outsider, this list is one of the few mediums I have for voicing my

Second, I applaud all the work you and others have contributed towards the betterment of the project. I continue to be amazed at
the dedication and commitment of many of the developers - you included!

Thank you for us!

Third, I have no problem with filing Jira issues. I have filed several in the past. However, IMHO that is not going to solve this
particular problem. Neither is going back through the commits (as David suggests) to identify the problematic code. IMHO, there is
something fundamentally wrong possibly with the planning process or the manner in which commits are filed. I don't know.

I think Ryan answered you. Filling Jira issues is really the best way to
progress.
Remember it's a community driven project where nobody has the power to decide
alone.
We need to make community decisions. For that we need to organize how to make
these decisions.

Code validation and regression testing is a complex process that needs to be addressed with some rigor if the community ever
expects to move ahead. I am available to help in anyway I can. But, I don't see much discussion or activity in this direction.

You are welcome, if you have ideas about how to organize that.
Put your green hat on (but please don't say "I don't know", I'm sure you know
something ;o)

As for your comment concerning the themes to use: my original comments were directed towards the online demo which, if there is a
way to change the ecommerce product listing theme, it is not well advertised.

Sorry to say there isn't enough time in the day for me to report all the rendering problems I see in this release. For example,
try adding a product to the cart and observe how the the shopping cart summary links (on the right column) under "Cart Summary"
overlap each other. Or, attempt to do a quick checkout (without logging in) and observe that the left column renders on the left

Hello Ryan, Jacques:
That is correct. I was referring to the ecommerce demo.

Again, thanks for engaging in this discussion.

That Anil is leading an initiative to clean up user facing components is
good news indeed!

I am keenly aware of the issues facing front-end developers. IMHO, one
of OFBiz's strengths is that the framework makes back-end development
relatively pain free. Relative to front-end development that is. I spend
much more time on front-end work whenever I implement a new project.
But, I'm willing to do this because I know with total conviction that
the back-end won't let me down. Thanks David, Andy, Jacques and
everyone else who have made this possible!

elements in the markup, consolidate and simplify styles and bring the
markup up to more modern web standards that accurately reflect Best

this is currently an "in progress" initiative, I imagine that there
will be bugs/issues in the layout and Freemarker templates and
stylesheets are worked on. I don't think that this is necessarily an
indication of a lack of pride in ownership, but rather a natural part
of the front-end development process. With the vary large variety of
browser and operating environments, there are considerably more
variables in front-end development as opposed to backend-end
development, which at times can make the process more complex. To
echo your words (and I am not being condescending here, so please
don't take this the wrong way), there is simply not enough time is the
day to test every page in every browser, in every operating system.
In that case, I would echo Scott in encouraging everyone on this list

Hi Chris:
IMHO, you have two choices:
1) You can design some code changes that could be committed back to the
project that allow for selective menu/form display much like the Catalog
Manager allows for an end-user to modify some of the functionality of a
store. If you choose to go that route, then you would most likely create
a new component etc. etc. etc.

2) You can do what I have done in the past, and for which there isn't
really a "Best Practice" guide: Modify the screen/form widgets and
comment out the stuff you don't want to be displayed or create a new
screen/form widget for each of the web pages you would like to modify
and insert them inline with the other screens for the application(s) in
question.

The rest of this discussion will depend on which route you decide to take.

Hi Jacques,

I find bizness time theme to be a bit too vertically spread out and the
font is generally too big, so I always switch back to Flat Grey as it is
more condensed.

I find this helps a bit with Bizness time:

From

  th, td {
  color:#55;
  padding:0.25em 0.5em;
  }

To

  th, td {
  color:#55;
  padding:0 0.2em;
  }

Also, zooming out the browser helps too.

Cheers,

2009-10-12 Thread Carsten Schinzer
All,

I'd like to complete some documentation on configuration of OFBiz and just
today got across ControlTier.

Since we are using a similar (but proprietary) tool internally, I am looking
for anyone with experience setting this Open Source tool up to manage OFBiz
environments.
Just recently there were actually a couple of notes on this list touching
the configuration of distributed setups with OFBiz. So maybe you guys can
help me?

Otherwise take this as a hint how roll outs could be organized and
automated.

Kind regards

Hi Jacques:
First, thanks for engaging in this discussion. As an outsider who really
cares about OFBiz, I find it disheartening that the project as a whole
does not have enough pride in ownership to at least validate basic user
facing components. I understand the project is growing and that is a
good thing. But I caution everyone, bigger (and more) is not always better.

While discouraged I'm not going to stop promoting and using OFBiz. IMHO,
it is still unrivaled. These are but surface problems that need
attention - sooner rather than later. Since I am an outsider, this list
is one of the few mediums I have for voicing my concerns. Sometimes,
however, I feel as though I'm "spitting in the wind".

Second, I applaud all the work you and others have contributed towards
the betterment of the project. I continue to be amazed at the dedication
and commitment of many of the developers - you included!

Third, I have no problem with filing Jira issues. I have filed several
in the past. However, IMHO that is not going to solve this particular
problem. Neither is going back through the commits (as David suggests)
to identify the problematic code. IMHO, there is something fundamentally
wrong possibly with the planning process or the manner in which commits
are filed. I don't know.

Code validation and regression testing is a complex process that needs
to be addressed with some rigor if the community ever expects to move
ahead. I am available to help in anyway I can. But, I don't see much
discussion or activity in this direction.

As for your comment concerning the themes to use: my original comments
were directed towards the online demo which, if there is a way to change
the ecommerce product listing theme, it is not well advertised.

Finally, I welcome any further discussion on quality control and testing
as I really do believe that OFBiz rocks! I want to see it take its
proper place in the world :-)

Regards,
Ruth

Hi Ruth,

When you see an issue just drop a word about it in this ML with a copy
of the url of if you have enough time, please file a Jira.
It should not take too much time. I will also recommend you to use the
Flat Grey Theme or at least Blue Light one. Which browser are you using ?
I suspect some issue with Bizness Time and I'd ask community if we
should revert the default to Flat Grey, at least in trunk ?

BTW I agree with you that some it's discouraging. For instance when
you want to apply a patch and have to fix 2 unrelated bugs before
being able to test it. Some time it's even your own bugs :D.
But at the same time, OFBiz is growing and we should not become
discouraged.

Hi Scott:
Sorry to say there isn't enough time in the day for me to report all
the rendering problems I see in this release. For example, try adding
a product to the cart and observe how the the shopping cart summary
links (on the right column) under "Cart Summary" overlap each other.
Or, attempt to do a quick checkout (without logging in) and observe
that the left column renders on the left bottom of the page starting
at a horizontal position below the right column - leaving a huge
empty white space between the left margin of the browser and the
right column.

I'm just a little discouraged at how little testing is done with each
new release. It seems to get worse and not better as time goes on.

You can check leftbar screen here applications/marketing/widget/sfa/

In this screen there are 2 screenlets: "Quick Add Contact" and "Quick

Hello David:
IMHO, that is a cop-out. Does the project have a "Board-of-Directors" or
other governing body? If so, where is the leadership here? Software
development is not just about committing code to a repository. It is
just as much about planning, testing and taking responsibility for one's
actions.

Not actionable comments. One could look at the history and see who

Re: Call WSDL service from OFbiz?

2009-10-12 Thread Jacques Le Roux

To call a service you may use something like

<#assign billToPartyNameResult = dispatcher.runSync("getPartyNameForDate", Static["org.ofbiz.base.util.UtilMisc"].toMap("partyId",
billToParty.partyId, "compareDate", orderHeader.orderDate, "userLogin", userLogin))/>

I never used something like taht to call a webservce though..

Hi Alexander,

I suppose that you get this error because the party that you are
trying to associate to pixelfiles_fotos catalog is missing Vendor

Go to party profile and assign Vendor role to it.

I was using IE8. Everything works fine in Firefox.

Many thanks,

Or it's because of timeout problem of news portlet. If so, we'll tune
the JBoss Portal and improve the news portlet implement.

Re: Call WSDL service from OFbiz?

Quick answer : you would have to create a static worker method for this. Not
sure it's a recommend way to do it though...

I added a new email to my ofbiz. In the body of this email (a .ftl file) I
need the data coming for a WSDL service. So, how can I call a WSDL service
from a .ftl file? Is this possible or I have to do this in another way?

Thanks in advance.

Web User Permission

2009-10-12 Thread Simon Hutchinson

Hi All,

I have searched the mailing lists, which have several references to
this issue however none seem to have a definitive answer so i am
raising it once again.

When performing Auth+Capture through the payment gateway I am getting
the following exception (when logged in as a newly registered user)

"Error: To run createAcctgTransAndEntries you must have the one of the
following permissions: ACCTG_ATX_CREATE, ACCTG_ATX_ADMIN"

If I log in an checkout as admin who is a member of these groups
everything works fine.

I have read http://docs.ofbiz.org/display/OFBTECH/OFBiz+security but
am still a little unsure about the "correct" way to implement this
security for web users.

It seems intuitively wrong to give accounting permissions to ecommece
web user but maybe I am mistaken, perhaps I need to somehow run
"createAcctgTransAndEntries" as a different user??

Could someone please point me in the right direction for a recommended
approach to this security issue.

Kind Regards

Simon Hutchinson

Hi Naveen,

Oops, sorry I mixed up with your previous topic for decimal point.

Yes, you're right. The {billingAccount.accountCurrencyUomId} cannot display as
mentioned.
I also try to dig further, still cannot find.

Hi Charles,

I am not clear with your message, the format which i specified is the format
that is ok for me.

But the case if, you see the

¤12.000

Here, i am not getting the currency symbol, which is the need to display.

For me in some cases, when i set the locale for Indonesia also, the currency
format is not applying.

Thanks and Regards,
