RE: [OT] Oracle JDev 10g Final (9.0.5.1 build 1605) is out!

2004-04-20 Thread Amjad Shahrour
Well,

I use Eclipse, and Jbuilder as my primary IDEs.
Both are nice and I was consedring them the best IDEs out there.

But when JDeveloper10g released, I think I have changed my mind.

Top reasons that I liked Jdeveloper are:
* performance + the look and feel.
* Completeness ( including UML & DB modeling and DB access sheets).
* the JSP viual development.
* the excellent Struts support ( much better than Excadle and
JbuilderX).

(btw, Jdev is free to download and use personally, but you need a
development licence ( not free) if you want to use it in production.)

Regarding Sun Java Creator,
I have used it, the idea is nice. But still missing lots of things.
Hopfully sun will do it right in the offecial release.

It would be greate if Jdeveloper10g gives us the same JSF support as Sun
java creator.

I have been using Eclipse for a while now. It is a little slow a times,

but overall works pretty well. Have any eclipse users tried JDeveloper?

Any reason to switch? Is JDeveloper free?

RE: [OT] Oracle JDev 10g Final (9.0.5.1 build 1605) is out!

2004-04-19 Thread Vijay.Nair

I was big fan of Eclipse...until we had a project on the 9IAS
application Server and we started expirementing with JDeveloper...
The built in oc4j server helps us in rapid deployment...and we had no
problems while deploying the application built in the IDE to the actual
9ias server ...also lotsa useful stuff about creation of Data Sources
and stuff..
Helps a lot if you have the Oracle Application Server as your primary
application server for the system...

Interested to know if neone has actually developed stuff on bc4j or used
the ojsp tags?

It'll work on iAS or any other J2EE server. There is direct help in
creating deployment profiles and installing the common libraries for
 Oracle Application Server
 Standalone OC4J
 JBoss
 Tomcat
 Weblogic
Anything else you'll have to tweak the deployment files yourself or do
it in Ant if you prefer

I don't know about any of the IDE nonsense but you can have tomcat
serve any directory you want.. Have a look at the manager.xml and
admin.xml files in webapps and work from there.

Just wanted to say my toughts about Jdeveloper10g.

Simply it is GREATE!!.

And there is no other IDE that can even compete with it.
*It has everything that I need.
* extraordinary performace ( I cant believe its pure java ;) )
* very very very organized.
* I feel very comfortable when I use it.
* this what IDEs should be.
* IMO it is far better than VS.net.

good work Jdeveloper10g team.

I am Looking forward a plugin that simplyfies the JSF development
(visually).

Eric it's a pure Java App - you can run it on Mac, Linux or whatever -
plenty of people did run the Preview on Mac without too many problems -
if you have any problems or issues just post them on OTN.

Hi Erik,

though MacOS X is not an officially supported platform, it should
still run fine if you have a 1.4.2 JSDK installed. This OTN thread

http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jsp?forum=134&thread=221840&message=614003

should get you started. From what I can see, people ran
into some minor problems, but that was the preview
version which also had some problems with Linux which
are gone now. I would give it a try. Basically, JDev 10g is
an 'xcopy' install; everything comes in a huge .zip archive
and only has to be extracted to some directory. Then find
the /jdev/bin subdir and check jdev.conf. Uncomment the
line starting with SetJavaHome (in my version, it's line 94)
and change it to pointing at your JAVA_HOME. That should
be it. After all, I'm running the Windows version this way
at home under SuSE 9.0, for I didn't want to download twice,
and I strongly suspect all those different versions just contain
the same files in the end. So I ended up with a surplus
Windows JSDK (in the /jdk subdir) which can be safely
deleted under Linux, but otherwise it runs just perfectly.

HTH,
-- Chris

NB. If you look closer at the /jdev/bin directory, there
even is a mysterious file named jdev-Darwin.conf.
Sounds kind of Apple-related to me :-)

2004-04-14 Thread James Holmes
As a side note, I just released a new version of Struts and Faces Consoles
that now work with JDeveloper 10g.

I'll post an official notice later.

And they did a great job indeed. Well, I'm not paid for promoting
Oracle software, but but this is rather close to the IDE I always
wanted. All those litte features that make life so much easier
actually seem to work now (upon briefly testing under Windows
and Linux (home)). Choosing IDEs always is a matter of taste,
and I like the Eclipse, IntelliJ and NetBeans approaches as well,
but well, after all, this definitely might become be me and my
teammates' workhorse for quite some time.

So, Duncan Mills and his entire team should open a bottle
of Champage now, sit back, relax and watch things happen.
From a technical view, 10g beats JBuilder X (among other
'full-featured IDEs') in almost any aspect. The 'productivity
by choice' slogan seems to be quite fitting. Alas. Great job,
guys!

Cheers,
-- Chris.

NB. Still wonder why the release of JDev 10g Production
is *still* not on the OTN home page.
