RE: Autoscaling

2014-07-07 Thread Timothy Lothering
Thanks Giles!

Kind Regards,

Timothy Lothering

From: Giles Sirett [mailto:giles.sir...@shapeblue.com]
Sent: 06 July 2014 10:16 AM
To: users@cloudstack.apache.org
Subject: Autoscaling

I have a question around autoscaling

OK, I know that with a NetScaler, I can effectively create and destroy
instances based on demand.

I also know that we've recently added dynamic resource scaling of CPU and RAM

https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/CLOUDSTACK/Dynamic+scaling+of+CPU+and+RAM

My question: does anybody know of any plans to combine these two threads? The
Use-case would be to autoscale a specific instance based on demand (i.e. rather
than adding more instances, ACS would add more resources to that instance)

Kind Regards
Giles

Hopefully someone who's used cloudstack a lot more will have more success!

Thanks,

everywhere I've looked for how to use local storage says I should
change two global settings;

  * system.vm.use.local.storage = true
  * use.local.storage = true

However I'm looking at my global settings and only the first exists
(which I have set to true).

Elliot,

When you see such an error - there usually a predecessor message
that says CloudStack checked for X, Y and Z and found no suitable
resources based on your configuration.

Put the logs on pastebin or some other site (strip out any private
info you dont want to share). I would also recommend cloudstack
4.3.1 (which is not officially out yet) but should come thru in the
next several weeks. Its latest stable release of CloudStack 4.3.0 -
with latest bug fixes.

I've put a build for folks who want to try it out until we complete
official release of ACS 4.3.1 process.

Unzip tgz and it should have required RPMs with both Open Source and
Non-Open Source modules.

Hi,

I've been putting together a cloudstack set-up for experimentation
purposes - right now we're just trying to compare different
platforms for private cloud infrastructure before we start getting
too in depth with any of them.

I've added the cloudstack 4.2 apt repository, and I'm running on
Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, and I believe I've followed all the installation
guides correctly at the various stages.

We've set up a management server, which is also an NFS server,
however we're interested in using local storage for the majority of
things, and have also set up a single KVM host which I believe is
all configured correctly to use local storage. If I look at the
dashboard, I'm told I have more than enough resource in every
section to create an instance the size I want to - which is a small
offering I've created with just 1.0GHz and 1GB of RAM, with local
storage. The host's not very powerful, but according to the
dashboard I am using 1.50GHz/5.87GHz, 1.38GB/7.80GB,
3.55GB/285.95GB Secondary Storage, 1.03GB/450.99GB Local Storage
and 0.00KB/571.90GB Primary Storage (I'm assuming that's meant to
be a combination of the NFS server's primary storage offering and
the local storage on the host, though the numbers don't quite make
sense at first glance).

However, when I try to add an instance, I receive an
InsufficientServerCapacityException and I'm struggling to work out
why. I can't add an instance using a small shared storage offering
either, but if I'm not mistaken that's expected because the zone
and host are configured to use local storage. The only thing I can
think of is that the local storage isn't properly configured, but
when I've looked it seems to be.

Any pointers for how I can further diagnose this would be great -
thanks in advance!

Everything seems to be correct. I don’t see anything in the logs as well.
I am not sure if this is the issue but, can you remove the quotes around basedn
and bind.principal and try again?

remove the quotes, remove the ldap server(ip and port) and add again. check the
logs to see for any exception.

BTW, when you query the ldap from command line, is it returning users?
ldap server should have some users listed under the basedn provided and
accessible to bind.principal with bind.password.
Can you confirm this by command line query to ldap outside of cloudstack?

Hi,

That would be nice to merge dynamic scaling of cpu and ram with auto scaling.
Only problem is support for dynamic scale down of cpu and ram is not there, so
we may need to control the maximum resource(cpu/ram) that can allocate to a VM
based on the service we want.

My question: does anybody know of any plans to combine these two threads? The

 2) How important (different people may have different opinion) is

You can probably change the host_address field of the storage_pool table to
change the IP address of your primary storage.

You will probably want to make sure you don't have any (non-deleted) volumes on
the storage pool (primary storage) in question, though.

As you likely have seen, the volumes table is linked to the storage_pool table
via the storage_pool.id and volumes.pool_id fields.

It might be easier for you to create new primary storage and migrate your
volumes on the old primary storage to the new primary storage.

Subject: recreate iptables rules on hosts

I just upgraded to 4.3 from 4.1.

On 4.1 I had disabled iptables on my XenServer hosts because I had had problems
accessing my instances. Which now I believe was due to ipset not working with
the kernel I had (see my other threads on that if interested).

Now that I am on 4.3 (and with a properly working ipset in XenServer), it looks
like every time a new instance is created, iptables is getting started and a
new rule added to access the new instance (as expected). However, all my
existing instances become unreachable because they do not have rules. Is there
tool to have Cloudstack re-create all the rules for existing instances on the
hosts?

In case it matters I am using basic networking without security groups.

thanks,
Carlos

We've set up a management server, which is also an NFS server, however we're

However, when I try to add an instance, I receive an
InsufficientServerCapacityException and I'm struggling to work out why. I can't
add an instance using a small shared storage offering either, but if I'm not

Re: SystemVM attempts to use incorrect hypervisor on router creation after host tags have been applied

2014-07-07 Thread Dave Hoffman
I am aware that it cannot find a VMware host that is tagged Xen. That
is intentional. I have 2 Xen clusters that are able to run the cloud
router but, Cloudstack is still trying to use vmware for the hypervisor
to launch the template.

I am wondering if there is not logic to use all hypervisors in a cloud
and Cloudstack assumes if you launch a vm on a certain hypervisor, the
cloud router MUST be launched on the same hypervisor.

If that's the case, I'm guessing we may have to remove the vmware
system template and test if that works as XenServer will then be the
only choice.

host tags have been applied

Hello,

We have a mixed environment with XenServer and Vmware. We are trying to force
the system vm to launch on to Xen but, when a new network is created with the
first vm created being a vmware template, Cloudstack tries to deploy a vmware
cloud router.

If the first vm created is on XenServer, the router creates on XenServer
without issue.

Manually create a network does not create a router until a vm is launched so
same issue applies on first vm creation

All hosts are tagged appropriately - Xen for XenServer and VMware for VMware
System Offering For Software Router has a host tag of Xen

Below is the log showing the process of the failed creation.

Hi everyone,

Please, please take a moment to fill out the survey that Giles referenced
(below). :)

It is very important to the continued health of the CloudStack Community
that we be able to build up an ever-increasing list of companies that use
CloudStack as many people out there have simply never heard of it.

Due to the sheer mismatch of marketing dollars, it is a common
misperception that a cloud-orchestration system like OpenStack is the only
viable product in this space. Clearly, we'd like to show that this is, in
fact, not the case and that many companies have chosen CloudStack.

Thanks so much!

I've put a build for folks who want to try it out until we complete official

Unzip tgz and it should have required RPMs with both Open Source and

Hyper-V hypervisor: Donot have permission to access downloading URL of vomue

2014-07-07 Thread huangchunmei
Hi All,

I installed CS 4.3 and setup a Hype-V vm. When downloading volume of the VM,
I met below issues, any idea to fixed it? Thanks in advance.

Download one volume of Hyper-V vm, then click the link in pop-up, get
following issue,

Check the folder /var/www/html/userdata of SSVM with command ls -l, got
below results,

Thanks,

4.1.x - 4.2.x major migration issue

2014-07-07 Thread Nick Wales
I upgraded following the guide exactly.

https://cloudstack.apache.org/docs/en-US/Apache_CloudStack/4.2.1/html/Release_Notes/upgrade-instructions.html#upgrade-from-4.1-to-4.2.1

Everything went fine until running the script to restart the system VM's.

cloudstack-sysvmadm -u cloud -p password -a

The console vm restarted but the agent stayed disconnected. The SSVM failed
to restart, the VR restarted ok.

I couldn't work out why the agent wouldn't connect so decided to destroy
console and SSVM's so they would come back happy as they usually do.

They didn't come back. Now my secondary storage is showing up as 0KB in
size, and the system templates status is 'No space left on device' so I
can't start any new systemvm's.

I don't know where to begin to fix this, any ideas?

I assume this implies AIX. There were number of threads (including mine)
asking about AIX support on CloudStack. As it stands, other than IBM -
no other cloud solution has support for it (AFAIK).

ilya

PS: AIX is usually run by mammoth shops that started at least 30 years
ago - is it the case for you as well?

Re: Template Default SystemVM

2014-07-07 Thread Rajani Karuturi
As far as i can see, both the commands are same except a ‘-‘ is missing in the
url filename in the first call.
in the first run it failed with 403 whereas in the second run it was able to
download.

the script gets the template id by executing the below command:
mysql -h $dbHost --user=$dbUser --password=$dbPassword --skip-column-names -U
cloud -e select max(id) from cloud.vm_template where type = \SYSTEM\ and
hypervisor_type = \VMware\ and removed is null”

looks like you are getting NULL instead of the id with the above.

can you run the above query and see if its returning properly?
