Re: Cloudstack with PCI compliance

2014-04-24 Thread Chip Childers
CloudStack itself can never be PCI *compliant*... only a company can
be. CloudStack can certainly be part of the technical architecture for
an IT environment (or service provider environment) that is being
audited for overall organizational compliance.

A service provider that offers a CloudStack-based cloud is also,
similarly, unable to really offer compliance for their customers.
They are only able to fulfill certain aspects of the required set of
controls, and support their customers during the PCI audit process *of
their customers*.

There really isn't a silver bullet here... you have to have your own
answers for how the required controls are implemented (and for many,
there is an infinite number of possible implementation designs).

As for the docs for a cloud environment, check out:
https://www.pcisecuritystandards.org/pdfs/PCI_DSS_v2_Cloud_Guidelines.pdf

Keep in mind that it will absolutely depend on how things are being
audited. Is the CloudStack Cloud external to the org trying for
compliance? If so, the doc above would be the right choice for where to
start. Is the CloudStack environment controlled by the org attempting
compliance? If so, it's likely a combination of the Cloud Guidelines
and the Virtualization supplemental info.

Your best bet is to work with someone that knows the PCI process, and
gets how the controls are typically evaluated by the various auditors.
I've been through this before, and I can tell you that even the auditors
are different in their understanding of the guidelines.

 Announcing Apache CloudStack 4.3.0

 Tue Mar 25 2014 09:47:06 GMT-0400 (EDT)

Flexible, scalable, Open Source Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) used
by organizations such as Zynga, Datapipe, and ISWest, among others, for
creating, managing, and deploying public, private, and hybrid Cloud
 Computing environments

Forest Hill, MD --25 March 2014-- The Apache Software Foundation (ASF),
the all-volunteer developers, stewards, and incubators of more than 170
Open Source projects and initiatives, today announced Apache CloudStack
v4.3, the latest feature release of the CloudStack cloud orchestration
 platform.

Apache CloudStack is an integrated Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS)
software platform that allows users to build feature-rich public,
private, and hybrid cloud environments. CloudStack includes an intuitive
user interface and rich APIs for managing the compute, networking,
software, and storage infrastructure resources. CloudStack became an
Apache Top-level Project (TLP) in March 2013. We are proud to announce
CloudStack v4.3, said Hugo Trippaers, Vice President of Apache
CloudStack. This release represents over six months of work from the
Apache CloudStack community with many new and improved features.

 Under The Hood

CloudStack V4.3 is the next feature release of the 4.x line which first
released on November 6, 2012. Some of the noteworthy new and improved
 features include:

 - Support for Microsoft Hyper-V - Apache CloudStack can now manage Hyper-V
hypervisors in addition to KVM, XenServer, VMware, LXC, and Bare Metal
 - Juniper OpenContrail integration - OpenContrail is a software defined
networking controller from Juniper that CloudStack now integrates with
   to provide SDN services
 - SSL Termination support for guest VMs - Apache CloudStack can configure
and manage SSL termination in certain load balancer devices
 - Palo Alto Firewall integration - Apache CloudStack can now manage and
   configure Palo Alto firewalls
 - Remote access VPN for VPC networks - CloudStack's remote access VPN is
now available for Virtual Private Cloud networks
 - Site to Site VPN between VRs - CloudStack now allows site-to-site VPN
connectivity to it's virtual routing devices. This permits your cloud
computing environment to appear as a natural extension of your local
network, or for you to easily interconnect multiple environments
 - VXLAN support expansion to include KVM - CloudStack's support for
integrating VXLAN, the network virtualization technology that attempts
to ameliorate scalability problems with traditional networking
 - SolidFire plugin extension to support KVM and hypervisor snapshots for
XenServer and ESX - SolidFire provides guaranteed Storage Quality of
Service at the Virtual Machine level
 - Dynamic Compute offering - CloudStack now has the ability to dynamically
scale the resources assigned to a running virtual machine instance for
   those hypervisors which support it

A few months back I was playing around with CloudByte's ElastiStor which
is a FreeBSD ZFS based storage solution. The interesting thing is that
their management interface is built with the Apache CloudStack management
framework. At the time, the interface was almost identical to stock
CloudStack. in fact, it was so identical that one might even assume that it
is really cloudstack thats controlling their storage layer.

In short, they have the UI running with their propriety storage adapters
on FreeBSD 8.x IIRC. Their evaluation builds are available from
 http://www.elastistor.info/builds/.

 http://www.cloudbyte.com

Very interesting information...

As a side note, having Apache CloudStack manager work on FreeBSD would
clear a path for creating and distributing production ready cloudstack
appliances. These appliances would be fully compliant with the permissive
 ASF guidelines.

Yup. It certainly would be a path to that.

Re: Cloudstack AWS

Are you able to use the API via any other mechanisms? If I'm reading this
right, you have already enabled CloudStack's AWS API compatibility feature,
right? Can you run commands via boto or equiv CLI for AWS?

 Hello folks,

I'm trying to connect to our company's cloudstack using JetBrain's
Teamcity's built-in Amazon EC2 support. Teamcity asks me for an Access Key
ID and a Secret access key which, if I'm not mistaken, is the same thing as
the apikey (Access Key ID) and the secretkey (Secret Access Key) generated
by Cloudstack. As the Amazon support is built-into Teamcity, I redirected
the connection (with no possibility to change the host name in Teamcity) to
our cloudstack using a dns redirect on our teamcity machine.

When I try to test the connection from teamcity, the cloudstack logs can
see that connection I try to make and as far as I can understand (from our
Network ops team) that the cloudstack is seeing a valid url being sent from
my side to connect to it. However, I get an error:
 java.lang.RuntimeException: org.apache.commons.codec.DecoderException:
Illegal hexadecimal charcter n at index 0
I looked into this exception a bit and it seems to me that it may
something to do with decoding the keys that I'm using.

Would anybody have any idea on what could be the cause of this, or what
can I further investigate to figure out why am I being hit with this
 exception?

Thank you for your time consideration.

Not easily (i.e.: without code changes). Sounds like a great feature

cloudstack-agent isn't required for ESXi or XenServer environments.
That's KVM only. In the case of ESXi, communication from the CloudStack

A little more improvement:

Added the ability to simulate different compute offerings / accounts (and

FWIW, I'm not sure about in the UI, but you can change the API's ACL for

This will probably leave the UI with the buttons, but will always fail for

I understand that Wido has informally committed to building the

video I saw on youtube). With this in mind, I’m wondering if this is
something that could still be added to 4.2 based on the info in
 http://xenserver.org/blog/entry/tech-preview-of-xenserver-libvirt-ceph.html.
I realise that it’s not ready yet on the XenServer side but is this
something that might make it to 4.2 in advance of the XenServer development
as opposed to waiting for 4.3? Can the Cloudstack side of things be
developed in advance of the Xenserver elements?

I'll only answer with regard to the status of new features and 4.2. We
have hit feature freeze for that release now, so if it's technically
possible to build the feature ahead of XenServer it would end up in the
next feature release of CloudStack (assuming that someone builds it).

I saw recently there was a patch for rate limiting to mitigate some attacks

Correct, and really that's where a provider has to spend the time.
Securing the management environment is the primary area of effort for a
provider, since CloudStack itself takes care of the tenants. That
environment should (1) be built with redundancy in mind, (2) be
protected from the big bad Internet with appropriate FW and / or other
network security technologies. Load balancing is also critical to add
somewhere, and would normally be the place where you would do your SSL
termination for access to the CloudStack API / UI.

OTOH, The method of protecting the customer environments will vary, depending
on the zone type and other network offering selections that the provider
makes.

For example, let's assume an advanced networking zone using
VLANs for isolation. In that environment, there is a public network
that can easily be tied to the Internet directly. The VR's provide FW
services for the customer VMs.

Now, you can take it a step further and provide cloud-wide edge
security, but anything that limits the customer's ability to self
service firewall policies should probably be avoided (in the general
IaaS use case). If an org is more comfortable using a hardware FW, then
that can be done as well. Lots of flexibility is available for
deployment designs.

So to sum it up, CloudStack is *absolutely* designed for a public
provider. You just have to think about how to configure your
environment correctly. That's really out of scope from what CloudStack
itself should be handling.

Re: openldap and cloudstack

2013-07-16 Thread Chip Childers
Not easily, no.

However, there is work in progress to add the capability to manage LDAP
accounts via CloudStack (creating a user in CloudStack would create them in
LDAP). That's a Google Summer of Code student project, so it's probably not
going to be out until 4.3 (end of year).

  cloudmonkey api ldapConfig hostname=1.2.3.4 searchbase=DC=XXX,DC=LOCAL

I assumed that CloudStack would automatically populate the user entry on

You need to create an identical user in CloudStack else authentication

  you need HA for authentication.

Here's the relevant code:

public class ManagementServerNode extends AdapterBase implements

private final Logger s_logger =
Logger.getLogger(ManagementServerNode.class);

private static final long s_nodeId = MacAddress.getMacAddress().toLong();

} catch (Exception e) {
s_logger.error(System integrity check exception, e);
System.exit(1);

From what I see, it seems like the only exception would be caused by the
s_nodeId being = 0, which is odd because I assume you have a mac

DEBUG log level should help.

 6. start cloud-management service.

After that i logged in the cloudstack'ui and stopped the instance. When i
started the instance, there is an error. You can see the log:

The release note you told me to check do not say how to install/upgrade agent

What platform are your hosts?

If CENTOS/RHEL, build the RPMs with the packaging/centos63/package.sh
script.

If Ubuntu, then follow the packaging instructions to create the deb
packages.

From there, if you installed via packages previously, follow the
appropriate upgrade steps for that specific platform.

Hope that helps!

Re: Problems after management server reboot workaround

2013-05-08 Thread Chip Childers
On Wed, May 08, 2013 at 09:11:43PM +0200, Jori Liesenborgs wrote:

 Hi everyone,

On our cloudstack setup (4.0.2), I noticed that after a reboot of
the management server, I was no longer able to start new instances.
A secondary problem was that the management-server.log file filled
up extremely fast (gigabytes in a few hours), with messages like
 these:

 2013-05-08 05:26:10,627 DEBUG [agent.manager.ClusteredAgentAttache]
 (AgentManager-Handler-4:null) Seq 7-1033568320: Forwarding Seq

 Flags: 100111,
 [{StopCommand:{isProxy:false,vmName:i-2-6-VM,wait:0}}] }
 to 130450099353672

This turned out to contain an important clue: when looking at the
'mshost' table in the 'cloud' database, instead of seeing one entry
for the management server ID, there now were two:

 | id | msid| runid | name | ...
 | 1 | 130450099353672 | 1367919381740 | cloud-manager | ...
 | 2 | 38424150221294 | 1367950608087 | cloud-manager | ...

And these two IDs were those that were mentioned in the logfile. In
fact, every reboot a new entry in the 'mshost' table appeared, and
that new ID was being inserted into the 'host' entries, for system
 VMs 'v-2-VM' and 's-1-VM'.

Browsing through the code, it appears that in the
 ManagementServerNode.java file, the function getManagementServerId()
returns a static value created by the MacAddress class. Now, on a
Linux platform (we are using ubuntu), this address is obtained from
the first entry that the command /sbin/ifconfig -a shows as
output. And this turned out to be the address of the cloud0 bridge
interface, which changed after a reboot (or after deleting the
bridge using brctl and restarting the entire cloudstack).

To avoid having to modify and recompile cloudstack, I created a fake
ifconfig: a simple python process that most of the time just runs
the real ifconfig (which I renamed to ifconfig-bin), but when called
as /sbin/ifconfig -a, it rearranges the output so that eth0 is
shown first (and not cloud0). This way, the management server id is
basically the MAC address of eth0, which stays the same after a
 reboot.

I haven't had the time to create a long running test yet (I only
figured it out this afternoon), but after several reboots, the
management server id now stays the same, and I am still able to
 start new instances.

 Hope someone finds this useful.

 Cheers,
 Jori

Jori,

This is really interesting. Would you mind opening a bug about it with
your findings? And if you're interested in submitting a patch, we'd
love that too!

That is correct. The only official distro from the project is the

we try to update it during the release cycle as a lazy load.

VLan for a Advanced network deployment of CS4.01.

I am confused by the Vlan setup on the switch side, is all the nodes
switch ports has to be changed to be *trunk *mode?

And how to tag the Vlan IDs and how to untag them?

How to get the node port access all the necessary vlans ?

What's the range of Vlan 300 - 500, Shoud I setup all the vlans from

 Thank you very much.

It depends on your switch make / model.

New announce mailing list

2013-04-03 Thread Chip Childers
Hi all,

I wanted to let you know that we have a new announce mailing list which
the project will be using for release, security and other important
announcements. For now, we'll probably continue to also send these
types of messages to the users and dev lists. However, if you want a
lower volume list to subscribe to for only significant announcements,
you have one now:

annou...@cloudstack.apache.org

To subscribe, send a message to
announce-subscr...@cloudstack.apache.org. I've also updated our mailing
lists page on the website to include the new list:
http://cloudstack.apache.org/mailing-lists.html

Messages to the list are moderated, and only those emails that are
official project announcements will be let through.

Let us know if you have any questions!

As for VXLAN support, it has only been discussed within the context
