[libreoffice-users] Calc too slow in opening Excel spreadsheets

2011-02-08 Thread Ruud Mantingh

Hello,

Has anybody have any (bad) experience with opening Excel spreadsheets in
Calc?
I'm often working with very large Excel spreadsheets containing lots of
formulas and macros.
Office 2007 opens these almost instantaneously.
LibreOffice takes a very long time and I even have seen it choke on one.
I think there's some major rework / rethink needed for Calc because as it
stands
I'm too embarrased to show it at work.
Basically for anything slightly complicated it's not fit for purpose IMHO.
Is anything done to address this?

Indeed! Kohei Yoshida must have paid attention to this while speaking at

However, it is not something as a 'quick fix', obviously.

[libreoffice-users] Frustrated Base Users / Errors in Base 3.3 (OO 3.2 work beautifully)

2011-02-08 Thread Tony Smith

Hi All

Firstly, I'd like to say that I don't completely agree with Andreas
Säger's, post

http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/www/users/msg02064.html

Firstly, I have been using OpenOffice from pre version 1 days, and I
have to say, when Base reached the 3.2 release it was very good, in fact
3.1 3.2 versions of Base are very good, and if you want to see what
can be achieved with Base, have a look here

http://ostdb.no-ip.org/

It's a project I have been working on for a while, using MySQL as a
back-end. Feel free to download and take the database for a spin, but
don't do it in LO 3.3, because Base is severely broken in 3.3, I really
wish it wasn't, but alas it is.

To read through what I've worked through to test the various
combinations of LO and operating system / hardware combinations, read my
feedback to ubuntu bug 709778

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libreoffice/+bug/709778

What makes the issues with Base 3.3 worse is that there is no
consistency in the bugs, as you will see by reading my posts to the
above bug report. NONE of these issues occurred in OO 3.2. This
unfortunately reflects really badly on the Open Source community
altogether, surely cannot the coding for Base be regressed to how it was
in 3.2, until the changes that were attempted in 3.3 can be more
thoroughly tested.

Please, I may not have the skills to be able to contribute to the source
of these projects, but I do my utmost to promote what was OO, and was
going to do so with LO, but I'm afraid introducing users to OO/LO3.3 may
have a negative impact. To top this all off, I was so looking forward to
LibreOffice, but until these hither too not present errors in Base,
particulary, are resolved, then I cannot recommend moving to LO.

I really hope somebody is able to fix this, and soon.

Thanks

Tony

 content of A1 only.

If seems here that if user Ctrl+selects cells in same column or row the
operation is successful, otherwise dialog warning pops.

So, working tip would be that user can Ctrl+select diverse cells (in same
column/row) and copy them temporarily in other sheet, then regular select this
temp data and copy/paste elsewhere

Yes, I do have openOffice, but wouldn't removing it for such issue be at least
doubtful? Are there other problems that may occur having both installations?

This is because when you paste in your texteditor, it looks at the
clipboard for a piece of text, and not for a piece of spreadhsheet.
When you copy an image from somehwere, and try to paste it in your
text-editor, this will not work also..

But when pasting this selection in LO-Writer, i do thing that the
contents of these 2 cells should be pasted, just as it works when
 copying/pasting A1:B1

I tried to do the same operation in:

1. openOffice Calc 3.3.0

No problems with pasting data from multiple diverse cells (in same column/row)
in regular text editor. Clipboard data seems same like LibreCalc - some star
office XML format and various others format objects

2. Corel Calculate (from Home Office) 5.0.38

Can't do Ctrl+select then copy at all (I had it handy so thought to try it)

3. MS Excel 2010

No problems with cells in same row/columns. Clipboard data is available in even
more formats - worth mentioning XML spreadsheet and CSV

Finally, it seems interesting to me that this spreadsheet programs can do
copy/paste when cells aren't in same column/row. At least I expected Excel to
do it, but it can't

And it seems that problem is not in intolerance between openOffice and
LibreOffice in same OS, like Stefan replied with same observation

Fellow Ubuntu Triagers!

This week's Bug Day targets are *drum roll please* LibreOffice and
OpenOffice!
 * #100 New bugs need a hug
 * #43 Incomplete bugs need a status check
 * #88 Confirmed bugs need a review

OpenOffice and LibreOffice are free office suites. OpenOffice has been
the default office suite for a long time ago, and has more than 1000
open bugs, some of them old, others new, and all of these need
triaging. In the meantime, Ubuntu is transitioning to LibreOffice, and
bugs that exist in LibreOffice too should be marked as such, to help
the developers find the bugs they can focus on.

Bookmark it, add it to your calendars, turn over those egg-timers!

Hi Tony,

Thanks for sharing your findings and experience (including your work!).
You're doing an important part of the job to fix such issues: reporting
them and bringing attention to them.

I posted separately about the Ubuntu Bug day coming up, it's a great
opportunity to learn more about the process and get involved. Reporting
bugs upstream is also an important part of that work. Then when
developers get to it, the goal is to have a clear idea of what needs to
be done.

An important next step (after acknowledging such important problems
exist in Base) is to make a list and one by one try to reproduce and
confirm such issues in a consistent manner, then file individual bug
reports for those ASAP. See this post for details on how to join the effort:
http://www.ubuntu-user.com/Online/Blogs/Amber-Graner-You-in-Ubuntu/You-re-Invited-This-Week-s-Ubuntu-Bug-Day-LibreOffice-and-OpenOffice

If we wait for someone to be available to work on such issues, when
that day comes such people may just have nothing to do if the list is
empty ;)

Cheers,

Fabián

 Thanks

FWIW, you can't do this on Mac either, but you can, on the other hand,
connect to the Mac Address Book.

BTW, this is also unavailable on the Mac version of OOo.

I seem to recall that the OOo base team dropped support for TB because
it meant compiling in source code from Mozilla when building the
LibreOffice packages, and that in itself was a totally unnecessary
nightmare, and in additionally, it was read-only anyway when it did sort
of, kind of, work. Why it is still available on Windows I don't really know.

Thundebird has a good export functionality!

[libreoffice-users] LibreOffice 3.3.0 won't print Writer doc for me on Arch Linux???

2011-02-08 Thread Joe(theWordy)Philbrook
I'm a multi-boot/multi-Linux-distro user who always uses the distro's
package manager to install applications from distro repos... because
I let pacman, apt-get, zypper etc... handle the dependencies for me.

I've been using OpenOffice for a long time. That's not to say I'm an
expert with it, but I'm used to it. When an Arch update (pacman -Syu)
replaced it with LibreOffice, I quickly opened a couple of documents, noted
that they looked right, and went back to whatever else I had been doing.
Well today I needed to print my lady a few new sheets of the:
Diabetes_Blood_Sugar_Chart.odt
she uses to track her glucose levels with... LO acted like it was printing
to my (cups system default) hp deskjet D4100 series printer (D4160). But
Cups never got the print job. After a few tries I did a test page from
http://localhost:631/
which worked just fine. Then after a few more failed attempts I tried
printing to file which I opened with okular and printed from there...

Is there a known printing issue with:
LibreOffice 3.3.0
OOO330m18 (Build:4)
3.3.0.2 ArchLinux build-1

That would cause this???

Is this an LibreOffice problem or an Arch Linux one?

Is it something I could expect some future update to automatically resolve??

Or do I need to find out how to make a bug report? (where?)

Hi,

When you try to solve this by means of a macro which is supposed to work
with *any* thinkable range selection you will face some logical
problems. Which of the multiple ranges should be considered as anchor
when you paste to a single target cell? This is not problem when all
ranges share either the same set of rows or columns. Then you have a
top-left cell in any case.

Applying a filter is the comfortable way to select disjunct rows sharing
the same columns. Apply a filter, copy a rectangle and paste. You get
the visible rows only.

Contrary to filtered rows, hidden rows would be included.

Hope this helps,
Andreas Säger

even a sample document that shows the issue. Personally, I just did a quick

Hi,

Do the developers read here too or where do i have to send this bug report?

Not a bug. It´s a feature. Works like MS Excel now and increases
compatibility with documents created by Excel. (I am not saying I
like it, but it works as designed.)

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Frustrated Base Users / Errors in Base 3.3 (OO 3.2 work beautifully)

Hi Tony,

What makes the issues with Base 3.3 worse is that there is no
consistency in the bugs, as you will see by reading my posts to the
above bug report. NONE of these issues occurred in OO 3.2. This
unfortunately reflects really badly on the Open Source community
altogether, surely cannot the coding for Base be regressed to how it was
in 3.2, until the changes that were attempted in 3.3 can be more
thoroughly tested.

Well I am staying with OOo 3.2.1 until things get better (if they ever
do). Working with Base as it evolves (and I use that word lightly) is
like running a marathon and hitting the wall at every version change...

Alex

I've given LO a couple of goes over the last few weeks and I just find
the Base component is unusable.

Forms that worked flawlessly on OO for several years suddenly don't
work. One thing that I noticed is that for some reason LO resets to the
original defaults randomly between uses-- fonts, macro security,
background colours etc.

The problem with this is the frustration of having to go back to the
Options menu and put things back to the way that works for me, and
then having to re-register databases.

I've switched between LO and OO about 4 times hoping that I could get LO
to work consistently, but it doesn't.

Unfortunately I've had to revert to Open Office for now.

[libreoffice-users] Re: Frustrated Base Users / Errors in Base 3.3 (OO 3.2 work beautifully)

2011-02-08 Thread Andreas Säger

Hi Tony,

Everybody is utilizing this development tool in different ways.

Three issues reported by me. They stopped working from 3.1 to 3.2:
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=109549 (filtered data
uneditable)
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=109726 (affects many
users trying to do a mail merge from spreadsheet, everybody uses
spreadsheets for merging without noticing how Base is involved)
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=108390 (no
add-data-only forms)

The 3rd one hit me hard in version 2.4.0 and again in 3.2.x
My form design quite often relies on new-data-only subforms inheriting
default data from a parent form. Other new-data-only forms allow
quick insertion of new foreign key items.

Since 3.3 I can continue working as I used to in 3.1.1.
3.0 as well as 3.1 had release stoppers in the Base component.
Personally, I am not seriously affected by the current Base issues.
Again, these issues are about things that stopped working from 3.2 to
3.3 in one build or the other one.

IMHO, the whole thing is very unstable albeit developing very slowly.
What has been added since version 2.0? Things that should have been
working right from the start plus syntax highlighting in the SQL editor
plus report builder which demonstrates the potential of database
connectivity. However, the report builder can not help building a
working desktop database. It sits on the other end of the data pipeline.

According to Alexander Thurgood there are zero LibO devs working on
Base. Therefore I tried to outline how this component could be reduced
to its core functionality without losing any capability except for
useless wizards and the hazardous single-file database. These obsolete
features (wizards and embeded HSQLDB) are entirely coded in Java.

Greetings,
Andreas

Re: [libreoffice-users] where is the guidelines on what to put on a CD/DVD distro of LibreOffice?

2011-02-08 Thread Andy Brown

Where is the guidelines on what to put on a CD/DVD distro of LibreOffice?

What is the link to such a guideline?

I use to make English only CDs of OOo and the recommended files needed
for a proper handout for distributing it to the masses. I would like
to know what is recommended for the LibreOffice version, since I am
dropping OOo in such a CD.

OOo has a ISO file to burn a CD of their package and everything needed.

I want to make one that will work for Windows, Mac, and Linux, if
possible; or just Windows for for now. I usually add some extensions
and documentation files to the CD and fill it up with everything I can
OOo, now LibreOffice related, as I can stuff it with. I add a lot more
Open Source packages to me DVD version. When/if I sell it, it is for
the cost of the CD/DVD, case, etc., with no profit. I want to get my
LibreOffice disc[s] done soon.

Any help on finding the link to the things that should be on such a
disk? I took my queue before from OOo's ISO downloads, but LibreOffice
is not OOo and that was well before Oracle bought it.

I am not one who will be listed on the web site as an official type of
distribution for LibreOffice, but just a local one in New York State,
USA. Well maybe I could do more distribution, but I will need to be
able to have a proper disc created and such for the needed system types
first. I would be a mirror download site, if needed, or wanted, as
well. I just need to know what is needed to be done.

The only thing you can do right now is download the different packages
from the download page and build from that. This maybe something to
bring up in one of the 'admin' list, though I am not sure which one as
there is not 'distribution project' as of yet.
