Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: LibreOffice won't start

2011-06-28 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Is that still LO 3.3.3 on 64 bit Win7 ?

Can you re-name your current user-profile to get it all back to "factory
defaults"?
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/UserProfile
For Win7 i think the pathname is
\Users\\AppData\Roaming\libreoffice\3\user
I think i would rename the whole folder at the 3 point changing
\Users\\AppData\Roaming\libreoffice\3
to
\Users\\AppData\Roaming\libreoffice\2011-06-28
The reverse date as a folder name means you can keep track of what the back-ups
mean. If renaming the profile works then you can copy chunks of your old
profile back into the newer one. The advantage with renaming is that you keep
everything in the galleries and temp folders. Also it allows you to compare
and
contrast to pinpoint where the problem happened if you have time at some future
date.

Tom :)

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: RTF support

2011-06-28 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
LibreOffice is more highly developed, it is developing faster and has a more
certain future. Substantial clean-up of the code has made it about 30% smaller
so it's faster to download and since it is more streamlined, hopefully it runs
a
bit faster.

The main increased functionality that i remember is the improved vector
graphics
capability but there is a list of release notes somewhere that gives a better
idea of how much faster LibreOffice is fixing and developing things.

Re: [libreoffice-users] RTF support

2011-06-28 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Things have moved on a lot in the last few years. MS Office can read the older
ODFs and LibreOffice / OpenOffice can read the older ".doc" and ".xls" etc.
The
newer ".docX" and ".xlsX" etc do often work but sometimes create problems with
images and text-boxes and stuff. You can change the defaults in LibreOffice.

Word-processor formats will often display slightly differently on different
machines and in different versions of word-processors but it's easy to edit.
This still happens with Rtfs too. The pdf (= Portable Document Format)
displays
the same on every machine but it's not so easy to edit. LibreOffice can export
to Pdf so you can keep 2 versions; one to edit the other so people can see how
it should look. If you need to collaborate with other people that all need to
make edits to a document then Google-Docs might be a good option, or else just
give them all links to download LibreOffice or ask your IT department to
roll-out onto all machines.

MS Office is less sophisticated about placing pictures and text-boxes and stuff
like that so sometimes pictures and things get moved around a bit. This does
also happen between any 2 versions of MS Office. However, documents created in
1 version of LibreOffice look the same in other versions.

Trying to convince MS Office users to use formats that everyone can read is "an
uphill struggle". They seem unable to use "Save As ..." and they are
suspicious
of any other format. Oddly it is only their default formats that have carried
malware.

To change the default formats in LibreOffice / OpenOffice go to
Tools - Options - Load/Save - General
to change the default ODF to the older 1.0/1.1. Alternatively at the bottom of
the same screen perhaps change the 2 drop-downs to save "Text Documents" to
"Word 97/2000/Xp" by rolling back up the list 1 place. For Spreadsheets and
Presentations roll back up the list 2 places to avoid saving as templates.

[libreoffice-users] Feature request: Cross-references in complex documents

2011-06-28 Thread rdb
Hi all,

I'm not really sure how to go about lodging a feature request, so I'll just
disguise this as a question.

I'm trying to write a fairly long book with OpenOffice and in general things
go very smoothly. So far, I'm pretty happy that I ditched Word (very fickle
with long documents) for LibreOffice. The problems start when I have to
insert cross-references:

There is no obvious way to change how your cross-reference is formatted or
represented. For example, my sub-headings are like this:
1.
and the dot will show in my in-text cross-reference, whatever I'm trying to
do to make it go away.
There is no search option in 'Headings' or 'Numbered paragraphs'. Why would
you need that? Well, wait till you're writing something with 20 chapters,
200 section headings, and 2000 numbered example sentences.
The only option then is to scroll through all items in the pane on the
right-hand side. Problem is, you can't resize the pane and scrolling takes a
while with hundreds or thousands of items.
If I'm not mistaken, LibreOffice does not have an obvious way to search for
broken cross-reference links, unlike Word, which turns your link into a
bolded "Error! Blablalbalbla". That's a problem if you just changed all
headings in Chapter 20 and you want to check if all references to it in
Chapter 1 are still ok.

Does anybody have similar problems? Are there any plugins to give you more
versatile cross-ref options? Am I overlooking some clever tricks?

Best,
Rik

 Hi

I know, that is not what you want to hear, but LibreOffice, OpenOffice or
Word are not the best tools to write a book with cross-references, numbered
paragraphs, and all thee other things you may need to write a book.

The best tool I know for this is *Lyx ( http://www.lyx.org/ )*

Quote fron: * http://www.lyx.org/
*

“LyX is a document processor that encourages an approach to writing based on
the *structure* of your documents
(WYSIWYM)
and not simply their appearance
(WYSIWYG).

LyX combines the power and flexibility of TeX
/LaTeX with the ease of use of a
graphical interface. This results in world-class support for creation of
mathematical content (via a fully integrated equation editor) and structured
documents like academic articles, theses, and books. In addition, staples of
scientific authoring such as reference list and index creation come
standard. But you can also use LyX to create a letter or a novel or a
theatre play or film script. A broad array of ready, well-designed document
layouts are built in.

LyX is for people who want their writing to look great, right out of the
box. No more endless tinkering with formatting details, “finger painting”
font attributes or futzing around with page boundaries. You just write. On
screen, LyX looks like any word processor; its printed output — or richly
cross-referenced PDF, just as readily produced — looks like nothing else.

LyX is released under a Free Software/Open Source
license,
runs on Linux/Unix, Windows, and Mac OS X, and is available in several
languages . “

 End Quote

I hope this answer was helpful to you

The LibreOffice docs team writes some long user guides. We use the
approach of one document per chapter, and then agglomerate all that
within a global document.

Maybe this would work for you?

3.4.x is a development version and it's not suggested for production
environment but just for early adopters.

[libreoffice-users] LibreOffice and Microsoft Office files - MIME type problem

2011-06-28 Thread Ian Long
Hi,

I have looked for a solution to an issue I am seeing, but without any luck -
hopefully someone has seen this before and can provide a workaround.

A client is using LibreOffice on Windows XP PCs, running IE8. They use LO to
save in the Microsoft formats (.doc, .xls, etc) which is working fine.

However, when they try to upload one of those files to web servers, the MIME
type of those files is always reported as 'application/octect-stream', rather
than
the real mime type - IE can't figure out the type as it would if Office was
installed.

This also affects files that weren't created by LO, such as ones that were sent
via email, that were created in Microsoft Office.

Is there a way to register some type of LO handler with Windows so that the
file types are properly recognized?

Thanks in advance,
Ian

[libreoffice-users] Reduce the size of LibreOffice for headless use only

2011-06-28 Thread Petroy
Hi,

I'm planning to use LibreOffice in combination with JODConverter (or just
via command-line) to convert some ODT files that my Java application
generates to PDF. It would be great if the users didn't need to have
LibreOffice installed for this task, so I'd like to include it into my
application. But LibreOffice is a few hundred megabytes heavy.

Is there a way to reduce the size of LibreOffice? Maybe there are files the
program doesn't need when I plan to just use it in headless mode for
conversion tasks.

Regards,
Petroy

2011-06-28 Thread Steve Edmonds
Hi Ernest. On my office linux machine with LO 3.3.2, I get a crash on
importing some older lotus files. Possibly it is the RTF format (or
rather the import filter). Can you try using the odt format for a day to
see if crashing stops and then may be a bug can be filed if the RTF
import is the culprit.

I did that too maybe 10 or 15 years ago, which I later regretted very

It is expectable that LibO is more crash-prone: it has new features that
aren't as deeply tested as the rest of the code.

Also, the code cleanup may cause issues itself.

Keep your hope, more work means even if LibO has new issues, they'll be
fixed.

The best you can do to help that happen without looking at the code is
(attempt to) indentify what triggers each crash and fill a bug report if
there's none yet.

If it's your first time filling a bug report, this may help:
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/BugReport

("identify" means not filling "Writer crashed here!!!" reports without
some more information, like:
 - step-by-step instructions of what to do to raise the crash
 - stack trace
 - some office document (like a RTF file!) that causes a crash

That is, something that makes it easier to chase the problem.)

> BTW, I save all files in RTF.

Please make sure you always keep the "main work copy" in OpenDocument
Format. Some other formats aren't completely implemented, may have some
issues.

Dunno about RTF, but this is the case with Microsoft's Office Open XML.

Also, even if the format is 100% supported, it may not support some ODF
feature used by LibO.

LibreOffice and OpenOffice.org separate projects.

Please note that some GNU/Linux distros distributed (distribute?)
OpenOffice.org with the Go-oo patches. Even if branded OpenOffice.org,
this is closer to LibreOffice than to OpenOffice.org.

So that's the *only* file which causes a crash?

You can open a bug and attach the strace there, and also the file if
Writer does not crash with other files (and if you can share the file
with the world).

See http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/BugReport

> How to fix it? :)

The way to fix it would be inspecting the strace to guess why does it
happen, and look at the code for obvious problems. Two hours later, you
probably start looking for not-so-obvious problems, and so on, until you
find the problem.

If the MSO document is uploaded directly to the server without being
opened in LO does your client have the same problem? I just want to
clarify if it is a problem with LO or possibly somewhere else.

Do other browsers report the same problem when used or access the page?

Also, what version of LO are they using?

RE: [libreoffice-users] LibreOffice and Microsoft Office files - MIME type problem

2011-06-28 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
This is a common problem with web servers.

Browsers don't set the MIME type, they receive it in the response from the Web
Server, along with the resource itself. It is likely that the Web server is
not set up to recognize that various file-name extensions correspond to
specific MIME types and so a default is being used. application/octet-stream
is the safest default.

There's a secondary problem with regard to being able to *open* LibreOffice
documents that are downloaded by a browser. That has to do with associating
the MIME type with an application on the receiving computer. But first, you
need the correct MIME type from the server.

The only way around, depending on how the file is downloaded, is to store it
without opening it and then renaming it so it can be opened properly. Not
something your average user will deal with (especially if they don't have file
exensions being show in Windows Explorer).

Most web servers have a way to be told what MIME type to attribute to
particular filename extensions. Someone needs to arrange with an administrator
of the web site to set that up.

Hamilton
Oh wait, these are being uploaded as .doc, .xls, and .ppt but those apps aren't
on the machine where the downloading is happening. Is that the case?

Hmm. Sounds like what's missing is some sort of browser helper. And
LibreOffice is registered as the application that opens .doc, .xls, and .ppt
files?

Still, it would be useful to see if this improves if the MIME types for those
Microsoft formats were delivered by the server. It may be that Microsoft
Office compensates for this problem when it is installed. We'll know that if
getting the server to use the correct MIME types doesn't help.

Re: [libreoffice-users] LibreOffice and Microsoft Office files - MIME type problem

Yes, that's correct, the files are being uploaded as .doc, .xls, etc but
Microsoft Office isn't installed on the machines that are uploading the files,
just LibreOffice.

Internet Explorer can't figure out the MIME type to send to the server when

If Office is installed on a machine that uploads the same files, IE does send
the correct MIME type.

I guess there isn't an option in LibreOffice to associate the .doc, .xls MIME
types as MS Office does?

RE: [libreoffice-users] LibreOffice and Microsoft Office files - MIME type problem

2011-06-28 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
Still clarifying my understanding:

The files are being uploaded to a server via browser uploading?

Hmm. Somewhere back around Windows 98 I remember MIME-type associations in the
File Associations dialog, but I haven't seen them in any recent systems.

So the question is, how can one control the MIME type of a file that is
uploaded.

I rummaged around on the Internet and I couldn't find much. This may be
helpful:

There's more here specifically on how IE determines the MIME type for an upload:

Re: [libreoffice-users] Feature request: Cross-references in complex documents

2011-06-28 Thread Andrew Douglas Pitonyak

Curious what you consider long? I have stuff over 500 pages as a single
document.

There is no obvious way to change how your cross-reference is formatted or
represented. For example, my sub-headings are like this:
1.
and the dot will show in my in-text cross-reference, whatever I'm trying to
do to make it go away.

I created my own numbering style for chapters and one for appendixes so
that they will number as I desire (ie, "1.2. Hello" for a regular
chapter and "Appendix A. Big Hello" and "A.2 Hello" for an appendix).

I believe that you can separately insert the number (which will contain
any extra text such as periods), the reference, or the number and
reference.

If you do NOT want the trailing period, then reference the section as
"chapter" and it will leave off the trailing stuff.

There is no search option in 'Headings' or 'Numbered paragraphs'. Why would
you need that? Well, wait till you're writing something with 20 chapters,
200 section headings, and 2000 numbered example sentences.

You are correct.

H. Never thought about it. Could probably write a macro to do it.
Seems like a good idea.

Am I overlooking some clever tricks?

Probably! :-)

Yes, exactly.

Office must do something special for the MIME-type associations, I was hoping
LibreOffice did something similar.

Re: [libreoffice-users] LibreOffice and Microsoft Office files - MIME type problem

2011-06-28 Thread Ian Long
I actually found a solution.

Internet Explorer will look at HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.ext key when uploading a
file. So if I add HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.xls and add a value called 'Content Type'
of type string with the desired MIME type, it will send that to the server.

"factory
defaults"?

Woo Hoo. Thanks Tom! That seems to have done the trick. I have opened
several LO apps through the day and no problems.

RE What version.

I was having the same problems on 3.3.3 and 3.4.0. It is fine now in 3.4.0
with the user-profile changed. 3.3.3 is still uninstalled.

So it was something in the user profile that caused the problems.

There is a .tmp file in the old *3\user* directory. I moved it to the new
directory but id did not affect the starting.

Thanks one and all for the help.

Ian

Hi leif,
apparently, the * (star) character won't work properly in Windows,
according to
http://muthusuba.blogspot.com/2011/03/so-called-hidden-features-of.html:

[PS: wildcards wouldn't work correctly on windows specify the file
names (list) instead.]

and here
http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/libreoffice/2011-April/009991.html:

[Eg. we cannot expand wildcards on Windows, if I am not
mistaken.]

If you're running Windows, this may explain why it wasn't working.

Regards
Stephan

[libreoffice-users] Inserting Info - Move in a 'Z' formation...

2011-06-28 Thread Llweyn
Need to know if this program has the capability to allow a user to have a
full worksheet, insert another cell and have the previous information moves
cells in a 'Z' formation.

For instance:

apple orange kiwi cola
bread meat milk coffee

Insert - PIE and have info move right and down.

apple PIE orange kiwi
cola bread meat milk
coffee.

Is this feature already available and if so where can I locate it - how do I
utilize it?
