Apart from this binary shit storm, there are hundreds of different cell

Hello Jeremy,

1) I'm not too sure... but dictionaries now are extensions (.oxt), so
I suppose they are located where LibO keeps its extensions. The
place/path may vary according to your OS.

On my Mac, I found them in the LibO package (in the Programs or
Applications folder):
Contents>share>extensions>dict-en / dict-es / dict-fr / dict-nl ...

Since I installed the US version and a Dutch language pack, I also
find in the LibO package
Contents>basis-link>share>wordbook>nl and ...>en-US

So apparently, I have two dictionaries for NL... which one is really in use?
According to the size, it seems to be the ones in >extensions.

2) In LibO, language is linked to character (Format>Character>Font>Language).
It is the most practical to link language to a template or paragraph
style. When you use a certain style, including a language defintion,
for a paragraph, LibO will consult the corresponding dictionary (if it
is installed - see a blue V next to its name in the language list).
LibO may check spelling (and possibly grammar) while you type, or
afterwards when you do a check-up.
If you use more than one language, you can specify this to LibO by
using several paragrapgh styles, each with different language choice,
or you can simply highligt a word or sentence and indicate another
language for it (in the Format menu, or in the status bar below,
simply clicking in the 3rd item and chosing the right language).

I hope I made it clear...

A bit confused by other replies, but export of impress files to html
creates images of each page, in png format.

As Mr/Ms Cohen states, you could use imagemagick to convert the images
to jpeg, but unless the original presentation pages contained
photographic images, it is probably better to keep to png format to
reduce further loss of image quality during the conversion to jpeg.

Also with imagemagick you can change the size of the images using the
command 'resize'.

Re: [libreoffice-users] percentage to get number in Calc

2011-09-26 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Hmm, i know BODMAS 'should' calculate that correctly but it's possible that a
program or the person typing it in might incorrectly read an equation like that
as
= 556.85 / (646.15*100)
Also any further calculations done using the correct percentage would have to
remember to divide by 100 which could become cumbersome.

It is good to know of different ways of handling a problem in case one way is
troublesome for some reason that wasn't (or couldn't) be stated earlier in a
thread.

[libreoffice-users] Spell check not working

2011-09-26 Thread STRINGER LEON
Hi,

I installed LO 3.4.3 (OOO340m1 Build 302) a few weeks ago and I've
just noticed that the spell check (both AutoSpellCheck and
Tools->Spelling and Grammar...) don't work.

For AutoSpellCheck, mispelled words are not underlined.

For Spelling and Grammar I just immediately get a message saying "The
spell check is complete".

I installed LibO_3.4.3_Win_x86_helppack_en-GB and I've re-run the
installer with the repair option but no improvement. (English (UK) is
my default language for documents).

Does anyone have any ideas as to why this isn't working?

I have had previous versions installed if that might be conflicting?

Running on Windows XP SP3.

Thanks,

Leon

[libreoffice-users] Re: In Writer, how can I type characters from the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet)?

2011-09-26 Thread dionysien
The *I*nternational *P*honetic *A*lphabet is a universal means of
representing the speech sounds of any language. The corresponding chars can
be found under /Phonetic Symbols/ in the list of http://unicode.org/charts/
Unicode 6.0 Character Code Charts . Although by far not as high that of CJK,
the amount of IPA chars (with combining diacritics) results in a long list
of char (combination)/key combination mappings. Fortunately, most users
need just a subset of it.

Re: [libreoffice-users] libreoffice impress can converts from pptx to jpeg multi-page, this is possible?

2011-09-26 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
To post a "feature request" or "wish-list" item this guide might have some
useful points.
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/BugReport
I would [put "[wishlist]" in the subject line along with 2 or 3 keywords so
people know what the issue is about.  Then one of the drop-downs, possibly
"severity"(?) has an option such as "feature request" or something like that.

I agree that it helps to give a link to how to run terminal commands when
giving command-line instructions but it's not always possible and sometimes
might be seen as patronising.  It's impossible to get the right balance every
time but hopefully people are comfortable enough to ask for clarification if
answers are not clear enough for them.

The list can be very intimidating and unfriendly but some people here really do
want to help.
Regards from
Tom :)

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: percentage to get number in Calc

2011-09-26 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
It's not really wrong but there needs to be some indication that it is a
percentage figure.  The original numbers don't really warrant more than 2
decimal places.  Another way of removing problems with ambiguity would be to
write the equation as
= 556.85 * 100 / 646.15
Then it doesn't matter if (100/646.15) is calculated first or the (556.85 *
100), either way the answer is about the same, hopefully exactly the same.

Why not simply formatting the correct value as percentage? This way we
have the indication that it is a percentage figure while having the
correct relation for further calculations.

[libreoffice-users] Error messages on starting LO

2011-09-26 Thread Rev. Nick Sharp
Whenever I open LibreOffice for the first time, whether it's a Writer,
Calc, Draw, Impress or Base document, new or existing, I get two error
messages popping up.

The first says,
Error loading BASIC of document
file:///c:/Users/Nick/AppData/Roaming/LibreOffice/3/user/basic/dialog.xlc:
General Error.
General input/output error.

The second says,
Error loading BASIC of document
file:///c:/Users/Nick/AppData/Roaming/LibreOffice/3/user/basic/dialog.xli:
General Error.
General input/output error.

That's identical, except it refers to dialog.xli, not dialog.xlc.

If I navigate to that location, the folder "basic" does not include a
file with either name, just one called script.xlc. There are two files
called dialog.xlb in two subfolders, Library1 and Standard.

Reinstalling hasn't helped.

LibreOffice 3.4.3 on Windows 7 64 bit.

I just dismiss the messages and carry on without any problems, so it's
not too bad, just a puzzle and an irritation.

Does anybody know what I can do to fix this?

Nick

This is precisely what I have done for Mac OSX.

How generic are builds? Would it cover the entire family (Ubuntu, Mint,
Trisquel etc), just Debian, one particular release of Debian, or just the
specific machine?

I really don't know, but I'm hasarding a guess that they are fairly
generic - however, each distrib currently packages its own version of
the connector extension to accompany any given release of their own
version of LibO. What is certain is that if you want a 32bit connector,
you have to build with the 32bit mysql connector C library, and if you
want 64bit, well...the corresponding bit library for that.

If you look at the OOo extension site, the MySQL native connector
extension was provided in the following flavours :

http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/en/project/mysql_connector

Linux (32bit)
Linux x86_64
Mac OS X (32bit only)
Solaris Sparc
Solaris x86
Windows (I assume only 32bit, but who knows ?)

So, one would need to build for these arch/OSes and also Win64.

[libreoffice-users] Relational database example help

2011-09-26 Thread dave boland
I have been messing around with Base for a relational application. The
User Guide mentions the word "relational" twice, but offers no
examples/explanations. That really needs to be changed.

In the mean time, perhaps someone could write up a quick procedure for
the simple example I have below. My interest is mainly setting up the
tables (4) and making sure the company name is in both the Client and
Contact tables. I realize that a foreign key comes in to play, but it
is not clear how to do this or how information flows from one table to
another. The forms seem to be easy, so they were included just to
complete the thought.

The example application a customer information database. It uses forms
for input, reports with queries.

The information collected is:
[Company]
Company ID.Int...Primary Key
Company Name...VarChar...Name
Company AddressVarChar...Address
Company URLVarChar...URL

[Client]
Client ID..Int...Primary Key
Company Name...VarChar...Same as Company.Company Name
Client NameVarChar...Individual's name
Client Department..VarChar...Department the client works in
Client Phone...VarChar...Phone number
Client Email...VarChar...e-mail address
Client Interests...VarChar...Interests
Client Notes...Memo..Information about client

[Contacts]
Contact ID.Int...Primary Key
Contact Date...Date..When I contacted the client
Company Name...VarChar...Same as Company.Company Name
Client NameVarChar...Same as Client.Client Name
Contact Method.VarChar...From a list that includes phone, e-mail,
meeting, FAX
Contact Notes..Memo..Notes/ToDo for the client
Followup Date..Date..The date that I need to re-contact the
client.

There will be three forms - Selection, Client Information, and a
sub-form for Company Information. They may look something like this:

-
~~~ Selection ~~~
#   Company Name Client Name
--  ---
1
2
:
nth
[Go To Client]  [Add Client]
-
-
~~~ Client Information ~~~

Readers,

A couple of annoying interface behaviours: personal toolbar
preferences (e.g. visible 'load url bar') and in impress, to be able

Is there an obscure settings file that can be accessed and copied for
new installations of LO? Personalising each computer after LO is
installed is a bit repetitive.

"Messing around" with a database is like doing the same with a
programming language. You won't get anywhere.

http://openoffice.org/projects/documentation/downloads/directory/Base/Mid%20level%20Base%20tutorial

First you've got to learn about tables, fields, relations and keys. Then
you can use dozends of different databases with Base, Access, php
webtools or similar database tools.

different languages?

Jeremy Shapiro

Do you want to add words to the dictionaries [such as the English .oxt
dictionary files], or use the default "personal" or "standard"
dictionary and add words to that?

I would not add words to the .oxt dictionary files unless you are
building your own dictionary that will be used by others. To do that, I
can help you, but you should contact me off the list for the instructions.

   [webmas...@libreoffice-na.us]
They are simple to do, if you have some basic computer skills and the
right type of [free] software.

I created "the below" English dictionary from an older English .oxt file
and replaced the older word list with a newer one. If you have your own
word list for medical, chemical, etc., specific/exact words, it is easy
to do using parts of a current one for your "default" language. You
just need to do a few things to make it work. To be honest, I have a
unadbridge dictionary word list of over 200,000 words. I would not want
to use such a dictionary since I could have typed in a wrong word that
is spelled correctly for a different word that was not what I wanted in
my text. The one I used was has 51042 words in it. That was enough for
my use, at this time. The older on has over 60,000 words in it but it
has words like; Artaxerxes, Bujumbura, Zubenelgenubi, Zubeneschamali,
which all seem to be specific cultural "family" names. I think the
people who created the newer word list wanted to remove the non-English
family names [or something] from the list. Those types of "words"
should not be in an "English word" dictionary list anyways. There are
family name word lists out there as well. I have one that is over 8,000
names long, that is on the LO-NA DVDs, but in the short list, not the
longer one on the dictionary page of the LO-NA DVDs.

http://libreoffice-na.us/English/add-on-dictionaries-large-list/US_English_April-19-2011-dic-file.oxt

http://libreoffice-na.us/English/add-on-dictionaries-large-list/US-English-Names---dict-en-us-names2008-10-12.oxt

If the dictionary is for your own use and you want to add words to it on
a daily/weekly basis for those in your text that are not currently in
your language dictionary, then using the default "personal" or
"standard" dictionary file that is used by LO may be the best and
easiest option.

In your options before it does the exporting, you can change the image
type to JPG and also change the size of the image. I do not remember
about setting the "quality" of the JPG image there, though I know that I
have software that can save JPG images as a "lossless" type. If the
size of the image is too small, you can resize it in many packages, but
the issue with the "original person" was he had 200 images/slides to
make into JPG images.

--

If he would let us know what the images are for, there may be an easier
way to convert the presentation for that specific purpose. I have
converted one to HTML before for an online version of the presentation.
I have used images and run an HTML "photo" album software [free] to make
it work as a slide show with transitions for online use. That software
took smaller size images and resized them to be all the same image size
I chose for the slide presentation. It all depends on the use.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: In Writer, how can I type characters from the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet)?

We had this type of thread before.

Make sure you have a font installed that has the IPA glyphs in it.

Then use Insert>Special Characters. Choose the IPA font and then the
IPA subset. Click on the character[s] you need and click OK. This will
place the "special character[s]" in your text at the cursor.

I believe that Arial Unicode has IPA glyphs in it. Though
GentiumPlus-1.504, DoulosSIL, and CharisSIL, seems to be IPA fonts. I
have them if you do not have these fonts or other font with IPA glyphs.

I do not use many IPA characters, but I have had the need for Spanish
and French characters such as ñ and ç, that are not on my English keyboard.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Spell check not working

2011-09-26 Thread webmaster for Kracked Press Productions

Just for the sake of trying it to see if this helps;
Have you installed the Language Tool or Linguist extensions? I use
these as my defaults.

I have these installed on an old Compaq Win XP system that I just
installed 3.4.3 on it. [It did not have LO on it before.] My test show
that when I clicked on the "spell check" icon, it opened the spell
checking system and worked fine for me.

This is the text listed with the extension on the link above.
[quote]
This award-winning extension is a valuable addition to spell checking in
multiple languages. Java must be installed on the computer. For more
information, visit the English homepage www.languagetool.org.

[unquote]

So if the spell checking does not work. Try this. Also, save the
folder that includes the info on your profile for LO [somewhere else]
and then delete it. Then open LO again. That does some resetting. If
the spell checker works then, that would mean your has a bad profile
file[s]. I know where it is for Ubuntu, but I could not find it in
Windows without a lot of time in the search. Also, XP, Vista, and Win7
seem to have profiles in different places sometimes. Some Windows user
may have the exact file/folder name and where it is located.

For what OS and what conditions does this "bug" happen? I did not get
this when I downloaded/installed LO 3.4.3 yesterday on a "clean install"
Compaq Win XP system. But I also add Language Tool and Linguist, plus
other default extension before I start using LO. So that may help the
issue.

That's because these errors typically caused by corrupt files in the
user profile. When you reinstall, the profile is left intact & you're
still using the same corrupt profile as before.

This also happens on linux as well.

Halt LO (including Quickstarter if you have it turned on) and rename:
c:/Users/Nick/AppData/Roaming/LibreOffice/
to
c:/Users/Nick/AppData/Roaming/LibreOffice_backup/

Restart LO and that will create a new profile as:
c:/Users/Nick/AppData/Roaming/LibreOffice/3/user/

Note: by doing that you will have to reset any settings that you had in
your other profile, but you still have the old profile as a backup if
necessary.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Spell check not working

2011-09-26 Thread Manfred J. Krause
Hi,

please have a look at the bug report (only 91 comments) ... ;)

I think it's principally a Windows bug, especially Win7.
Registering/synchronizing the bundled dictionary extensions is broken,
the user profile (of a previous LibO installation) doesn't get the new
values of the upgraded LibO version.
Mostly *all* language modules are unavailable in 'Tools > Options >
Language Settings > Writing Aids...'.

I've tried a short (by that time still incomplete) summary (based on
WinXP) in comment #24.
With Win7 that seems to be worse.

[libreoffice-users] Re: Relational database example help

2011-09-26 Thread Alexander Thurgood
Le 26/09/11 16:14, dave boland a écrit :

Hi Dave,

You will have to decide which form is going to be your main form, and
then link the others to it via the relations you wish to create. So, for
example :

> The information collected is:
> [Company]
> Company ID.Int...Primary Key
> Company Name...VarChar...Name
> Company AddressVarChar...Address
> Company URLVarChar...URL
>

You could link Company_ID to Company_Name in Client, Contacts and
Selection as a foreign key of these tables.

Then when you design your Client and Contacts form, bind the field
Company_ID to the corresponding Company_ID in the Company table, and
then indicate that what you want displayed in the form as the bound
column is actually Company_Name. The sub-form wizard should enable you
to do that (i.e. when creating Client form, go through the subform
wizard steps to bind to the Company table as well, which in effect
creates a subform within your main form).

You could also set up Contacts as a subform of Clients in the same way,
e.g. as a grid control.

These are of course just suggestions, there are many ways to skin a cat :-))

No, I think it is either a build issue with a library version problem,

Re: [libreoffice-users] Spell check not working

2011-09-26 Thread Spencer Graves
I had this problem and fixed it after someone on this list directed me
to something like ">> spell checking not working in LBO 3.4.3

>>
>>
http://nabble.documentfoundation.org/spell-checking-not-working-in-LBO-3-4-3-tt3299202.html#a3302339";.

  Specifically, I found "path:
...\LibreOffice\3\user\extensions\bundled"
("C:\Users\sgraves\AppData\Roaming\LibreOffice\3\user\extensions\bundled" in
my case). I renamed "bundled" to "bundled.err". Then I restarted
LibreOffice. After that, I was able to get what I wanted with
LibreOffice Writer following the documentation to Tools -> Options ->
Langauge Settings" and Tools -> Language, ... . It took some
experimentation, but I (mostly) got what I wanted.

NOTE: Windows (Vista and 7, at least) sometimes hides the
AppData folder, even when it seems to say it's not. In Windows
Explorer, type C:\Users\yourUserID\AppData", and it should appear [with
"yourUserID" replaced by your user ID].

  Hope this helps.
  Spencer

Hi :)
The 3.3.2 has fairly long term support so there is no problem with staying
with it. The newer features are mostly in the 3.4.x branch but then that
tends not to have the stability/support and might need upgrading much more
often. The 3.4.3 apparently gives the best of both but like you i'm
sticking with the 3.3.2 for now. You can install by downloading and
installing outside of your package manager .

You can have 2 or more instances of LibreOffice installed on the same
machine but this guide helps avoid the problems that are likely to arise
with that.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Real Usenet newsgroups

2011-09-26 Thread James Wilde
Well, there's a slight snag here, due to be solved real soon now. As I
understand it, the mailing list program used by libreoffice in its present
version can not accept unmoderated posts sent via gmane unless the sender is
also registered with libreoffice. Also as I understand it, this is due to
change in an upcoming version of the mailing list program.

This means you have two choices at present.

1. You can register with the libo mailing list using the -nomail parameter.
This means that your posts via gmane get right through the system, but you
don't get any emails. You read the newsgroup in your nntp reader. To use this
option send an email from the same email account you registered with gmane to
+subscribe-nom...@global.libreoffice.org. Reply to the resulting
email and you're done. Listname for the users list is, of course, users.

2. You don't register with the libo mailing list, which means that, until the
list manager is updated, your posts will come to one of the moderators to be
approved before getting on the list. Normally this seems to result in a delay
to be reckoned in minutes rather than hours.

Re: [libreoffice-users] preservation of views and personal settings

2011-09-26 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Once you have 1 machine set-up right (or at least "good enough") then you can
usefully copy&paste the entire user-profile onto other machines, even across
different platforms!

I copied the whole ".libreoffice" folder to usb-stick and onto the network and
then pasted it to several different machines.  It seemed to work but i didn't
dig around much.

I'm sure there is a more elegant way and i'm sure there is a more efficient way
of doing something similar.

Tom :)

Readers,

A couple of annoying interface behaviours: personal toolbar
preferences (e.g. visible 'load url bar') and in impress, to be able
to disable the view of the task bar.

Is there an obscure settings file that can be accessed and copied for
new installations of LO? Personalising each computer after LO is
installed is a bit repetitive.

Thanks for the flowers but it's Alex that has been doing all the work on

[libreoffice-users] Formula not working in new version

Maybe I should just go back to v 3.3.4

Thanks for the very clear post on the subject. I have no problem with a

I agree if spread sheet formatting is used. The proportion or ratio is
0.8617968, the percentage is 86.17968. If you were calculating the
percentage using a pencil and paper you would use 556.85 /646.15*100.
If I want to perform another calculation in another cell, such as the
percentage calculated above-5%, I have to be careful.
If
A1 = 646.15
A2 = 556.85
A4 = A2/A1 format as %
A5 = A4-5 is wrong. (very simple example)

Sometimes it can just be simpler to calculate the percentage and work in
% for subsequent operations than to calculate and format as %.

This is why I r e a l l y think that it is time to go to regular

I have been on the gmane sight twice, and I still don't see how to

Spam aside, what are the objections to regular newsgroups? It just
seems like it is the right thing to do at the right time to do it.

1) What path do the dictionaries need to be locate such that LibreOffice

Apart from what others told, you can have personal word lists.
See Tools > OPtions > Language settings > Writing aids.
Those are placed in your LibreOffice user profile
(For the path, see Tools > OPtions > General > Paths...)

2) Is there a way to get LibreOffice to consult more than one dictionary
for a text that has sections in or words from two (or more) different
languages?

You can set the language for various parts of your text,
Either via styles (F11, tab Font of a style), either direct (Tools >
Language > ..)

If
A1 = 646.15
A2 = 556.85
A4 = A2/A1 format as %
A5 = A4-5 is wrong. (very simple example)

Sometimes it can just be simpler to calculate the percentage and work in
% for subsequent operations than to calculate and format as %.

[libreoffice-users] Re: LO updates for Ubuntu 10.04

2011-09-26 Thread Tom
Hi :)
I'm not expecting any up-dates tbh. LibreOffice does full upgrades rather
than minor updates because it develops so fast. Is there a particular
problem that you are waiting for a fix for?

People in the documentation team tend to download the "upstream" version
from the web-site
http://www.libreoffice.org/download/
to help make sure screen-shots are consistent across different distros. The
instructions for how to install on gnu&linux are just being up-dated but it
might be a week before the proof-reading and uploading gets done. I think
the current instructions are good enough to work out.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: LO updates for Ubuntu 10.04

2011-09-26 Thread webmaster for Kracked Press Productions

Are you running 32 or 64 bit version of Ubuntu? Desktop or laptop?
Does not really matter, but it would be nice to know.

I use Ubuntu 10.04, 64-bit, as my default desktop. I run 3.4.1 right
now, but will be going to 3.4.3 soon. I just download the files I need
from LO and install it using the terminal. There is an easy to use set
of instructions on the LO site. It takes a few minutes to download the
files with broadband. Then I extract them. I rename the main folder to
ease my typing needs. Then I use the "sudo dpkg -i *.deb" command in
the DEBS folder, and then again in the sub-folder there. I do the same
for the help-pack I use. Take maybe 5 minutes after the download is
completed.

This is the link to the install instructions using the Terminal
http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/installation/linux/
If you do not know where it is, go to Applications>Accessories.

Is there any reason that you cannot do this on your system? Some people
have trouble using Terminal, but it gets easier the more you use it. I
never used Terminal till I stated using Ubuntu [9.x] early last year.
Then 10.04 came out and I went to it. My monitor has issues with 11.04,
so I have not updated to it yet.

On some of the systems I have dealt with for myself and mostly for
others, I placed 3.3.3 and then 3.3.4 on them. My default laptop
dual-boots with Vista and Ubuntu 10.04. Windows I have 3.3.3 on it,
while I have 3.4.1 on the Ubuntu boot. I have not updated either, since
I rarely use the laptop, and do not have the time to update the laptop
with all the updates that are out there for my used free software.

Sometime soon, I will be going to 3.4.3 on my 64-bit Ubuntu 10.04
desktop. When I get a better monitor, I will be upgrading to 11.x for
that desktop. The 3.3.x line looks to end with 3.3.5 which will be
"supported" for at least another year after that. When the 3.3.x line
ends the 3.5.x line will begin, and 3.4.x will be what 3.3.x is now and
3.5.x will be the "cutting edge" line. Soon 3.4.x will be ready for
business use. The sporadic spell checker issue for Windows that has
cropped up hopefully be fixed by then. Since I not have 3.4.3 installed
on XP and do not have any issues with the spell checker, it seems not to
be a bug that effects the greater percentage than those it does not
cause problem with.

So, if you want to go to 3.4.3 on your Ubuntu machine, go for it. After
the download, it take little time and only a few commands in Terminal.

On 09/26/2011 02:15 PM, Tom wrote:

You can have 2 or more instances of LibreOffice installed on the same
machine but this guide helps avoid the problems that are likely to arise
with that.

The problem with percentages, we are lacking the context. Is it an
intermediate value or the final value? And is the end user the same as
the person crunching the numbers? And finally, what is the best way to
display the data? There is no absolutely correct answer that works in
every situation. Sometimes it is more convenient to display the values
with the % sign and in other cases it may be better to display the
percent value without the % sign after each number.

pl of forum in Latin is fori, you are thinking of forae, which is the
genitive/plural ending for feminine nouns (usually end -a) and -um nouns
are usually neuter. (If I remember my Latin from way back in the Dark

It depends on what the user wants in the cell. If he wants the actual
percentage then use proper mathematical notation and write it as
(556.85/646.15)*100. That way there is no ambiguity for people or the
processor. If, however, since the percentage is used in calculations then
leave it as 556.85/646.15 and just change the cell format to percentage. That
will display the actual percentage as 86.xx, but leave the value for
calculations as .86xx.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: LO updates for Ubuntu 10.04

2011-09-26 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
I think the original poster was just curious why there haven't been any updates
but i'm not entirely certain.  A lot of people prefer to stay with the repos
and rarely even use ppas let alone installing directly from unfamiliar
websites.

It's good to have the choice :)  I'm happily staying with the 3.3.2 in the ppa
:)

Are you running 32 or 64 bit version of Ubuntu?  Desktop or laptop?  Does not
really matter, but it would be nice to know.

I use Ubuntu 10.04, 64-bit, as my default desktop.  I run 3.4.1 right now, but
will be going to 3.4.3 soon.  I just download the files I need from LO and
install it using the terminal.  There is an easy to use set of instructions on
the LO site.  It takes a few minutes to download the files with broadband.
Then I extract them.  I rename the main folder to ease my typing needs.  Then I
use the "sudo dpkg -i *.deb" command in the DEBS folder, and then again in the
sub-folder there.  I do the same for the help-pack I use.  Take maybe 5 minutes
after the download is completed.

This is the link to the install instructions using the Terminal
http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/installation/linux/
If you do not know where it is, go to Applications>Accessories.

Is there any reason that you cannot do this on your system?  Some people have
trouble using Terminal, but it gets easier the more you use it.  I never used
Terminal till I stated using Ubuntu [9.x] early last year.  Then 10.04 came out
and I went to it.  My monitor has issues with 11.04, so I have not updated to
it yet.

On some of the systems I have dealt with for myself and mostly for others, I
placed 3.3.3 and then 3.3.4 on them.  My default laptop dual-boots with Vista
and Ubuntu 10.04.  Windows I have 3.3.3 on it, while I have 3.4.1 on the Ubuntu
boot.  I have not updated either, since I rarely use the laptop, and do not
have the time to update the laptop with all the updates that are out there for
my used free software.

Sometime soon, I will be going to 3.4.3 on my 64-bit Ubuntu 10.04 desktop.
When I get a better monitor, I will be upgrading to 11.x for that desktop.  The
3.3.x line looks to end with 3.3.5 which will be "supported" for at least
another year after that.  When the 3.3.x line ends the 3.5.x line will begin,
and 3.4.x will be what 3.3.x is now and 3.5.x will be the "cutting edge" line.
Soon 3.4.x will be ready for business use.  The sporadic spell checker issue
for Windows that has cropped up hopefully be fixed by then.  Since I not have
3.4.3 installed on XP and do not have any issues with the spell checker, it
seems not to be a bug that effects the greater percentage than those it does
not cause problem with.

So, if you want to go to 3.4.3 on your Ubuntu machine, go for it.  After the
download, it take little time and only a few commands in Terminal.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Real Usenet newsgroups

2011-09-26 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
The home page is
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Main_Page

The Documentation pages don't yet have an area like the "Community
Documentation" for Ubuntu or other distros but i guess we could go that way.

If you do a rough draft of a wiki-page then hopefully other people would tidy
it up and give it a more professional look later on.  The whole idea is that
pages are worked on collaboratively, ie people add and change bits or even
shift the page to somewhere more appropriate later.  the rough draft would be
enough to help with this particular question this time and then just see if
people help with editing later :)
Regards from
Tom :)

I've actually never been to the wiki!    LOL    So, I'm not sure I'd want to
tackle that idea right now.  :-)

I *am* sure that if did something like that, I'd want to be more professional
looking, sounding, and somewhat looking like other items on the wiki.

And that would probably take more time than what I was going to do for Dave.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: LO updates for Ubuntu 10.04

2011-09-26 Thread webmaster for Kracked Press Productions

I do not use PPAs. I either get from the repositories from Ubuntu or
from the software's site. I have only about 3 or 4 packages, other than
LO, that I use that are not either in the Ubuntu repositories anymore,
or never was there in the first place.

The fact that packages like LO are updating every few months makes it
one that the repositories may never want to try to keep up and modify
their repositories every time the package comes out with an update or
upgrade. Also, now that there are going to be 2 lines of LO going at
the same time, repositories will not want to have both line, or three
lines when 3.5.x line comes out.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Real Usenet newsgroups

2011-09-26 Thread dave boland
I can get gmane to list all of the subscribed LO newsgroups and it
contains all of the messages in this thread. Not sure how that
happened, but... I'm not able to post to the group though, so this is
of no value to me until I can.

If posting instructions works for all of you then I'm ok with it, but I
still think regular newsgroups are a better idea for almost everyone
(though some obviously disagree).

I'm still not sure why Linux distributions like Ubuntu would use regular
newsgroups, but a major player like LO won't. I think this question
needs a good answer.

They don't. alt.os.linux.ubuntu isn't in *any way* related to any Ubuntu
list, group, forum et al. If you read the usenet charter it was simply
started by folks that wanted a usenet group. Ubuntu user lists are
available via gmane.org at: gmane.linux.ubuntu.user, as are nearly all

I wasn't asking him to read the entire newsgroup, just that thread to
see if it helps him solve his Gmane problem.

As for an nntp URL address, I haven't figured out how to pry that out of
Thunderbird. Of course, you could have helped and given him the

Or, he could use this web address for reading just the thread,
http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.documentfoundation.discuss/6638, and
it will look a lot like reading via a newsgroup reader. I just now
found this feature in Gmane.
