[libreoffice-users] Re: Documents Not Opening On External Drive

2011-10-24 Thread V Stuart Foote
==Posted from the Nabble Web Interface==

Yogi,

So reading into it, your Synology DS109 should be a Linux 2.6. based kernel.
Your Windows "shares" are coming to you from the NAS as SMB/CIFS from a
Samba 3.2.x package under Linux.

So you are going to be subject to some of the file locking issues mentioned.

It looks like there have been a number of upgrades to the NAS's OS and
firmware, I'd go ahead and login to it and perform the upgrade to the latest
OS release Disk Station Manager 3.2 (
http://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=41034 ).

Synology's Linux OS implementation provides a command line interface. The
configuration files for the SAMBA service can be directly edited (
http://forum.synology.com/wiki/index.php/How_to_add_additional_directories )
to accomodate account permissions and file/record locking needed to make
content of the SMB/CIFS shares fully editible from Windows 7.

In addition to the Synology provided OS updates, there is a robust community
of "modders" that actively integrate FOSS packages into the Synology Disk
Station Manager NAS environment.

Suggest you'll do well to do some reading in the Synology forums. You might
be interested in the iSCSI support as an alternative to SMB/CIFS.

Regards,

Stuart

Re: [libreoffice-users] Summary of bugs

  Hello!
Is it possible to see not only the total numbers of bugs on
categories, but also the "progress" in time? It is also interesting to
see the number of fixed (and not fixed) bugs on each new LO version.
Can I find such information?

  Thanks.

This has nothing to do with the TDFs policy. This was an Ubuntu bug
and a fix has already been committed to the distribution. See:

Thanks for the links. I looked at them and suspect that what I'm trying
to do will be too much for the database. It would be nice to create
clickable links to the files I'd like to attach, but I think that's
beyond my skills at present and I really don't have the time to learn.
Sigh.

[libreoffice-users] Slide with moderately complicated picture stops Impress dead in its tracks

2011-10-24 Thread Peter Langfelder
Hello,

this is a re-hash of a problem I saw a year or two ago. Any detailed
figure saved in windows metafile format and included in Impress
(haven't tried other programs) makes Impress grind to a halt. I
observed this with OpenOffice 3.3.x and now also with LibreOffice
3.4.3. Running top in terminal shows continuous high usage (90+%) of
CPU by Xorg. My machine is kind of old but still quite capable (Core
Duo at 3GHz or so, 4GB RAM). I tried unchecking font antialiasing and
hardware acceleration in Tools->Options, to no avail.

An example is posted at
www.genetics.ucla.edu/labs/horvath/CoexpressionNetwork/tmp/ProblemSlide.ppt
(not the prettiest, but that's what my collaborators sent me). I'm
curious if anyone can make Impress display the slide in editing mode
in anything approaching real time - I'd be very interested in hearing
of any success stories. I killed Impress after 10 minutes twice, and
once I had to kill the X server because the entire desktop became
unresponsive.

Interestingly, the slide opens without any difficulties in OpenOffice
2.4.1 and OpenOffice 3.0.0.

If no one is able to open and work with the slide, I am happy to
submit another bug report, although the response to the one I filed
with OpenOffice was "we don't have a fix and won't have one in the
future either".

Thanks,

Peter

RE: [libreoffice-users] Re: Documents Not Opening On External Drive

2011-10-24 Thread V Stuart Foote
Fellows,

I think you're mixing apples and oranges. Yogi's problem has nothing to
do with his DHCP service and is unlikely to be a router issue.

SMB (Server Message Block) and CIFS (Common Internet Files System) are
the same Microsoft controlled specifications.

As a practical matter affecting LibreOffice use, what is variable is the
OS hosting and the implementation of the network file system resource.
CIFS is the native Windows flavor (slight differences each release from
Windows NT to Windows Server 2008 R2) while SAMBA is the reverse
engineered FOSS implementation of SMB/CIFS (again differences with each
implementation of Server or NAS operating system).

The question earlier and examples of problems Alex referenced were
mostly related to file locking issues on SAMBA implementations (on
multiple *nix flavors). I think there was an NFS locking issue as well.
Several referenced running the SAMBA instance with the -NORBL flag (No
Record Blocking) as a work around.

So the question to be answered by Yogi might be: what is the OS base of
your NAS--Windows (native CIFS and few issues) or a *nix hosted SAMBA?
And, what release for the service/daemon? Also, for the problem data, is
the partition mount set read/write in the related share configuration or
smb.conf and how is the lock mechanism handled. Providing those details
and perhaps other about the NAS server, coupled with details on the
client experiencing access or stability issues would be more likely to
provide useful response and dialog.

Stuart

Re: [libreoffice-users] Altered use of F in Writer

2011-10-24 Thread Libre User
At first I was also annoyed but now find that I like the new
arrangement much better than the old function.

Since the small search box at the bottom of the screen is a toolbar,
it can be moved. I moved it to an unused piece of real estate at the
right side of the top tool bar and then locked it in place. Now it
is always available. I really like the fact that you can search
either forward or back in a document without changing the default
action of the old search pop-up.

To me it's a much improved feature. Sometimes change is good.

Is there a way to disable that behavior short of changing and

Tom: The files that do not open on the NAS work fine when I copy them back
to the Windows desktop. You are correct in that the NAS is simply being
used for backup, although it does have capability to do a lot more.

I don't see a problem with an open discussion about how to find out what

Re: [libreoffice-users] bug removal and software update policy

2011-10-24 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
I think it only affects the translation files. Note that there is no problem
if people stick with English. If you need better understanding then the best
places to ask are localisation lists or in the bug-report. This list does not
routinely deal with translation files and so is unlikely to have a good
meaningful answer.

See Stefan Weigel's link
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/873702
or join the localisation lists but they are probably working hard to find the
right files and get them back into the right places

[libreoffice-users] bug removal and software update policy

2011-10-24 Thread e-letter
Readers,

After reading a recent bug with calc formulas not saved in the local
language and the claim that this bug could be fixed in a number of
weeks, a few questions to ask. What happens next? Do programmers make
change to the software code for LO34, so that users have to download
the latest version of LO34 to see the error solved?

How is the correction to the software error tested before going into
the next version of (the so-called "stable") LO33?

Does the test environment consider the (presumably) different software
environments of LO33 and LO34, i.e. if tests are made in LO34 and
pass, how is the software correction considered of good quality to go
into the next version of LO33?

[libreoffice-users] Videos (mpeg etc) in Impress

2011-10-24 Thread mikko
Hello,

I wonder if I am missing something & if anyone else has this same problem: I
can embed videos in Impress but I have no control on how they start (simple
start on click would be fine), appear, leave or repeat. All the effects work
fine for images but inserted videos just start and run once. I am using
Impress in Mac, Win7 and Ubuntu 11.10, and have the same problem independent
of the OS. Apart from this, everything else works great but this is a
crucial feature for me (and keep me using other options such as PP and

Re: [libreoffice-users] LibreOffice Document Recovery error message

2011-10-24 Thread Jonathon Waterman
Thanks for the info. I'm familiar with Hagar's assistance from back in the
days I used to experiment with OpenOffice.

Fortunately, whenever I get a new extension I keep a copy of it on my
harddrive - so reinstalling them wasn't a problem.

Thanks for again for your assistance.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Altered use of F in Writer

2011-10-24 Thread Mirosław Zalewski
Go to Tools -> Customize -> Keyboard.

Under "Category" list select "Edit".
Under "Function" list select "Find & Replace".
In shortcut keys find "Ctrl+F" and click "Modify" button on the right.
Now click "OK" and that's it -- you have restored the old behavior.
You can do it for Writer only or for whole LibreOffice suite globally.
You can delete Ctrl+F shortcut at all as well, if you like.

BTW, that was one of first thing I have done after upgrading to 3.4.X.

You can assign almost any LO command to almost any keyboard shortcut. Perhaps
you should spend some time there customizing, it can really speed up your
work!

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Documents Not Opening On External Drive

2011-10-24 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Ahah, i was wondering what happens if you copy the files that don't work from
the NAS back onto the machine you are using? Do they work when they are back
on your machine? - using the NAS as back-up and storage but not for working on
files actively?

I don't know if there is a Windows command or something that would identify
whether you are using cifs or smb or something else. It's vaguely possible
that by knowing the model of the router we might be able to find out what it's
defaults are but i'm not sure i would want to state that sort of thing this
publicly.

Tom :)

Re: [libreoffice-users] Altered use of F in Writer

I also found this behavior little odd at first. But I settled with
"++F" which is Find and Replace.

Is there a way to disable that behavior short of changing and
recompiling the code?

If there's an option somewhere under Tools>Options, then I've the I've

Have you tried re-naming your user-profile? If it works you could then copy

This guide might help

[libreoffice-users] LibreOffice Document Recovery error message

2011-10-24 Thread Jonathon Waterman
Recently, ever type I exit out of LibreOffice 3.4.3 I get a box with the
following error message.

LibreOffice Document Recovery

Due to an unexpected error, LibreOffice crashed. All the files you were
working on will now be saved. The next time LibreOffice is lunched , you
files with be recovered automatically.

HOWEVER, the box below the line that states: The following files will be
recovered - is blank. Then I select the OK button and the error box
disappears.

While this isn't a major error - it is annoying to see it every time I exit
out of LO.

Does anyone what would cause this and/or how to resolve this problem?

[libreoffice-users] Altered use of F in Writer

2011-10-24 Thread William W. Austin

In 3.4, the behavior of the ^F is altered so that a brower-style window
pops up at the bottom of the screen. While some folks may like that I
find it to be an annoyance (this being the only app for which I have to
have a different sequence for find-and-replace - and yes, I don't use
windows much at all).

Is there a way to disable that behavior short of changing and
recompiling the code?

If there's an option somewhere under Tools>Options, then I've the I've
been completely unable to locate it.

Thanks

Re: [libreoffice-users] problem with formulas

2011-10-24 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Johnny, that might be a good work-around. I think the problem at the moment is
that it's difficult to know whether the formula needs to be in English or as
per the documentation for any of those languages. At least by forcing it into
English people know what will work. My guess is that this bug will be fixed
within the week but who knows ...

Re: [libreoffice-users] problem with formulas

There is a setting for this, maybe it's not set properly?

Tools → Options… → LibreOffice Calc → Formula → ☒ Use English function names
Should be:
Tools → Options… → LibreOffice Calc → Formula → ☐ Use English function names

Or maybe it's the bug that's already mentioned.

Ok, ignore my last email about this. The bug-report that Stefan pointed to

I'm fairly sure it doesn't so hopefully the problem 'should' get fixed.

Re: [libreoffice-users] problem with formulas

2011-10-24 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
I think the problem is that translations are not complete and so the
untranslated bits revert to English. I think the best way to deal with it is
to encourage a few Polish speakers to join in with the translations teams
http://www.libreoffice.org/get-involved/localizers/

However it doesn't really help much in the short-term and presumably also
presents a bit of a chicken-and-egg problem. People are more likely to be
interested in using and contributing to LO once it is completely translated
into their language but in order for it to be translated it needs more people
to use it. However it seems that quite a few people are already translating
into Polish and it's usually great fun to join in with a team like that.

Re: [libreoffice-users] problem with the pictures

2011-10-24 Thread Calvin Kim
Depending on the nature of your picture/graphic, you need to set
different anchor point. If your graphic is not related to the text and
it's only decorative to the page, you anchor to the page. If it's
related to certain paragraph, anchor around to *that* paragraph.

If you click on an image, you will see "anchor icon" displaying either
in the beginning of a paragraph, or a page. If you anchor it to a
paragraph, and if you delete/insert more texts before anchored
paragraph, your image will be pushed down or up along with other texts;
very useful if your image is related to that paragraph. You can also
drag "anchor icon" around to anchor to other paragraph.

Make sure to match "anchor point" and "position to."If you anchored
it to page, position it to "entire page"(usually). If you anchored it to
paragraph, position it to "paragraph area." This is, of course, general
setting and you might want to set it differently according to your needs.

Hi :)
Is this something to do with the "Anchor Point"? I tend to find that right-clicking on an image and changing
the "Anchor Point" to "Anchor to page" or "... to paragraph" seems to fix the picture on
the page better.

I don't think i have found the perfect way of doing this tho. Also when the
document is opened in Word the pictures sometimes get thrown around a bit as
they don't have as many choices.

My 'work-place' found they 'had to' install LibreOffice on all machines in
order to be able to do nice documents with pretty pictures.

Could you do this with two columns on landscape orientation? No

Bob, my test with an old OOo document had it showing a number sequence

pages per sheet and each of the pages show kept their numbering. Now if
you want to have sheet numbering, instead of page numbering, then it
seems not to be a valid option.

I still so not know the ins and outs of doing left and right footer page
numbering, except what was shown when I looked at odd and even pages in

Here is a 2 page printout [pages 10 and 11] showing my test page printed

Hi :)
Thanks for the flowers (as they say). People from Windows-land are mostly only
familiar with phone-support which makes it difficult to copy&paste the answers
that are spoken and impossible to give screen-shots or attachments. I guss
it's better with smart-phones but then you get into the unfamiliar land of text
and pictures which is tooo geeky for many Windows users. Which is odd because
it's easier. I guess physically being there is the ultimate support and worth
the most money.

Re: [libreoffice-users] problem with the pictures

2011-10-24 Thread Frieder

Hi

I don't know which Version of LO you have, butt if you use LO3.4.3 than
it is probably the following Bug:

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=37083
In LO3.3.4 this Bug doesn't exist.
@Tom: Sometime it is not possible to anchor to page. For example if you
need to hide and reshow columns in a Spreadsheet.

I don't think i have found the perfect way of doing this tho. Also when the

Hi. I have this regularly, just last week opening an OOO2.4

It is possible inside LibreOffice. Such setting is part of the printing
dialog. So must not use the button for printing, but use menu File ->
Print. In the printing dialog is a tab 'Page Layout' where you can
arrange the pages on the paper sheet. She might need to set the paper
orientation to landscape in the printer properties in additon.

In older versions of OpenOffice.org is was possible too. You had to
switch to 'page preview'. There use the icon 'printer options' (that
with hand and finger) to arrange the pages on the paper sheet, and then
print using the print icon from that toolbar, no other printing way.

Outside of LibreOffice the best way I found is to export to PDF and use
the settings in the print dialog of the Acrobat Reader.

Kind regards
Regina

Thanks, but that doesn't tell me what yours is actually running, merely
what it supports (quite a lot, which is pretty good). What we don't know
is which network protocol the NAS is offering your Windows client - my
guess would be CIFS, but like I said, its just a guess.

If it is CIFS, then there are these known issues :

As examples of just some of the problems plaguing users trying to
open/save/modify files in LibO via SMB/CIFS shares...

If it is NFS, there are yet again other bug issues, and the likewise yet
others for AFS, and WebDav, sigh.

Hi Tom,
It is neither a deb nor a rpm, the only thing missing, I now realise, is
that the damn extensions site doesn't put the file extension OXT on the
download link, so the file downloads as what appears to be a tarball or
an unknown zipped archive (which it is, but of a particular kind). This
is a bug with the extensions site not recognising the file extension on
upload.

Just add .oxt to the file name then open up LibreOffice, go to the
extensions manager and install it from there like any other extension.
You may even be lucky enough for your system to recognise the mimetype
automatically and startup the Extensions Manager dialogue when you
double-click the connector extension file.

One word of warning though : if you already have the connector installed
on your system via a RPM/DEB or just as an OXT downloaded from the Sun
extensions site, you're probably better off removing it before
attempting to install the version I have made available.

Could you do this with two columns on landscape orientation? No

Re: [libreoffice-users] Two in One Page

2011-10-24 Thread webmaster for Kracked Press Productions

I loaded a large multi page A4 document [hard to find since I use
Letter] in Writer.

I then did the following:
File > Print > Page Layout
This should show you the option to print several pages on one sheet
face. Plus you have the option to place a border around each page on
the sheet.

I use Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and 3.4.3
I tried this with the following printers:
Epson Artisan 810, HP Color Laserjet 2600n, HP PSC 1410, and CUPS-PDF.

The document had the page numbers set up for the page number to be on
the left side for even page numbers and on the right side for odd page
numbers. The actual way it is done is not clear to me, but if you go to
the footer of the first even page and do Format > Page I see the page
layout is set to left only and if you do the same for an odd page, you
get a right only shown in the page layout.

As I said, this was a large A4 document already created, and I just
looked at the document's setting and tested a printing of several pages.

She wants two pages to print on one paper (like having two

She claims its possible in M$-Word and I believe her. So, is

[libreoffice-users] Font disappears in Draw text box

2011-10-24 Thread ProWorks1
I'm running LibreOffice 3.4.3 on a MacBook Pro 2010 with OSX Lion 10.7.2 -
when creating a Draw document any text box defaults to the font Arial, which
is fine. However, when changing to certain fonts loaded in mt system, they
will not appear in the text box - a blank area will show as selected, but
the text will not appear.

Are certain fonts disabled? No, they do show up in the LibreOffice font
list, and they do appear as OK when accessed thru the FontBook. I have not
tested all fonts yet, but it seems certain fonts are off-limits (Barbedor,
Jenson Reccut, Goudy Old Style) while some standard fonts seem fine.

i use some of these fonts for artistic work and flyers I make for groups.
Anyone enlightenment here would be welcome.

P.S. - If this is a Lion issue, or a compatibility issue with Lion, I would
appreciate that lead as well, so I can take it up with Apple.

No error messages. After clicking on the target file the LibreOffice splash

in what library do you put the BASIC code? There is a bug, that such
functions are only found, if there are in your "standard" library. So a
possible way is, to define a library which contains the implementation
and to define a module named 'wrapper' in your 'standard' library, which
calls the implementation. Of cause, if you need only two or three
trivial functions, you can put them directly into your 'standard' library.

Not sure if it was just a typo, but it should be "VOL(A1; B1; C1)"
(without the quotes), and not "VOL(aA1; B1; C1)". But I don't think
that's the problem here (it shouldn't give you the #NAAM? error).
Could you possibly upload the file to www.2shared.com and send us the

Hi Yogi,

From time to time I manually copy the files stored on my internal drive F:\

to a network attached storage (NAS) hard drive for backup purposes. When I
double click the file on the NAS drive it will not open. The right click
context menu will only open some files; most will not open. The menu bar
File/Open... option likewise will open a few files but not all of them.

Is your NAS a SMB mounted ? (probably, I think that's what most are by
default).

There are known issues with reading/writing to SMB shares with current
versions of LibO, these are already in the bug reporting system, but the
cause appears difficult to pin down precisely.

Hi Peter,

Problem
No hyperlink toolbar - have a hyperlink button for adding them to docs but
not the one pictured in Help.

Does this work/should it work?

I seem to recall that the hyperlink toolbar as previously know was being
phased out / remodelled / reworked, so it is entirely possible that the
documentation is wrong on this topic with regard to LibO 3.4.x.

It would need checking though I guess.

Hi Anne,

The idea is to attach all the files associated with a specific record so
that I have everything in one place.

Is this even possible without me having to write an app? I could probably
install an extension if I knew where and how to find one.

Yes, it is possible, as Jay has indicated in his answer to you BUT, and
this is the nub, if you do it that way using a hsqldb backend, i.e. the
default database engine provided in LibO Base, and even with a separate
table for the binary objects, then you will rapidly hit performance
problems with the default java memory management collapsing under the
strain, which will inevitably lead to data loss, corruption or some
other unpleasant behaviour.

Another alternative to the problem of using binary large objects, is to
store a reference to their location on the disk, i.e. their path, which
is a much smaller VARCHAR string of characters. However, this then poses
the question of how to turn that string of characters into a clickable
link so that the user doesn't have to search in the file system.

The OpenOffice.org forums have already dealt with this question (and the
binary storage one for that matter), I strongly suggest you go and have
a search there.

I guess, you have changed the numbers via 'offset'. That's the wrong
way. You have to use a manual page break via Insert -> Manual Break. You
have to set the page style (it may be the same as before). Then the
checkbox 'change page number' is enabled and you can check it and enter
the new starting number.

If you want to do it later on, go to the first paragraph (it may be a
heading) of the page, where the page number should be changed. Then use
tab 'textflow' from Format->Paragraph. If the first thing on the page is
a table, you find it in the table properties. If the first thing is an
index, you should delete the index, enter a blank line and insert the
index after the blank line. And then set the new page number in the
properties of the blank line.

Kind regards
Regina
