[libreoffice-users] reactivate spell checker
Good evening from Japan Recently I have tried a demo version of the German (commercial) spell checker Duden Rechtschreibpruefung. Now the trial period is over, I deinstalled the above software, and think I manually also deleted all relevant folders, yet, the original spell checker is dead. Means: although the German dictionary is installed AND the language for the text set to German, ALL I ever get back from the spell checker - even if I intentionally introduce obvious mistakes - spell check is complete. Windows XP, LibreOffice 3.3.3 (build 301) Is there a trick to reactivate something that did work fine before? [libreoffice-users] Differences between LibreOffice 3.3 and 3.4
Recently, we've started the second phase of our company-wide migration from OpenOffice.org 3.2 to 3.3 and have encountered massive problems on our Linux terminal servers. They were so big that we've decided to put the project on hold for now and start looking for alternatives. Obviously, LibreOffice is our #1 choice here. However, even though I've been browsing the LO website for two days now I am unable to decide whether 3.3 or 3.4 would be better for us. As far as I can see they are both recommended for enterprise use in production environments but what I'm missing is a clear marketing-bubble free technical comparison. Does that exist? Or maybe an overview over what (enterprise-related) features 3.4 might have that 3.3 doesn't? Assuming you already read this http://www.libreoffice.org/download/3-4-new-features-and-fixes/ and this http://www.libreoffice.org/download/new-features-and-fixes/ the general recommendation is that you get the latest version i.e. 3.4.x The reason both versions are available is that because of the massive code changes, some regressions occurred. The majority of the significant regressions have already been fixed but some may have remained. If you find that features that used to work for you in OpenOffice 3.2 no longer work in 3.4.x it is likely that you are better off with LO 3.3.x (which is closer to the OOo code). If none of them works as expected, then you should insist on the 3.4.x and by reporting your problems, help the project move into a better future :) -- View this message in context: http://nabble.documentfoundation.org/Differences-between-LibreOffice-3-3-and-3-4-tp3518436p3518642.html Sent from the Users mailing list archive at Nabble.com. -- For unsubscribe instructions e-mail to: users+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted
Re: [libreoffice-users] reactivate spell checker
I was wondering if you could re-install the language pack[s]. Of you could install a dictionary extension for German. That might change the system settings. I know that if you add a different dictionary for the same language, the new one has priority over the older one. When both have thesaurus options, the new dictionary thesaurus word show up first, then the old dictionary's thesaurus words. So, adding a new German dictionary might help. This is the link to LO's Extension Center, with the dictionary search option. http://extensions.libreoffice.org/extension-center?getCategories=DictionarygetCompatibility=LibreOffice+3.4sort_on=positive_ratingspath=%2FLibreOffice-Extensions-and-Templates%2Fextension-centerportal_type=PSCProjectSearchableText= http://extensions.libreoffice.org/extension-center?getCategories=DictionarygetCompatibility=LibreOffice+3.4sort_on=positive_ratingspath=%2FLibreOffice-Extensions-and-Templates%2Fextension-centerportal_type=PSCProjectSearchableText= --- Also, since you are using version 3.3.3, you might want to install a newer version of LibreOffice. There is a 3.3.4 version and the 3.4.x line is now at 3.4.4. I used 3.3.4 before and I am currently using 3.4.3 and 3.4.4 on my Linux and Windows systems. They work much better for reading and writing the Microsoft Office .docx and the other file formats that MSO started using since 2007. It seems that every update works a little better in many areas, besides fixing a bug or three. --- Also, to promote what I have done: Look at the Extension listing for American British Canadian English dictionaries. From that link, you will find 11 different English dictionaries with spell checking words list ranging from 98,000+ words to 638,000+ words, and each has hyphenation and thesaurus options included. I have not seen any English spell checking dictionary that had 390,000+ or 638,000+ words in their word lists. That would make my contributions to the LO extensions the largest ones. Myself, I use the American English version with 217,000+ words in its spell checking list. . Pedro, thank you. The problem is that as an enterprise that sees IT as tertiary means of production (as opposed to technology-driven enterprises such as Google or Microsoft) we're extremely conservative when it comes to software. The latest and greatest is never our first choice, and features are a distant fourth to stability, reliability, and dependability. Right now I'm leaning towards the well-established and therefore more stable 3.3 release tomsave myself the hassle of new features and thus also new bugs. Is there a simple comparison between 3.3 and 3.4 that shows what 3.4 is capable of that 3.3 isn't? Maybe there's something we really need but don't know yet. Something that'd be worth the extra work and effort necessary to deploy 3.4 instead of 3.3? Right now it's more like a clusterf*ck of two separate feature sets with no easy way of comparison. Re: [libreoffice-users] Differences between LibreOffice 3.3 and 3.4
The 3.3.x line will be ending with 3.3.5, and 3.4.x will end with 3.4.5. Before that happens, the 3.5.x line will start. What happens is the newest line is used as the most cutting edge for its first few versions. Once it gets past 3.x.3, it starts being stable for businesses and enterprise use. The initial cutting edge options have most of their bugs fixed and it becomes the default version people will start using. You could use 3.3.4, but for the best ability and options, you need to go to 3.4.3 or 3.4.4 [with 3.4.4 just coming out] I use both. These versions read and write the Microsoft Office .docx and the other x file formats better than the 3.3.x line, or at least in my opinion. Soon 3.5.x will come out for those who want to have the most cutting edge version of LibreOffice. For businesses, I would stick with 3.4.4, or 3.3.4 but would prefer to have the 3.4.x line being used. If you want to use 3.4.3, since 3.4.4 just came out http://download.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/old/ holds the past versions. As I said, I use both 3.4.3 and 3.4.4. Actually the 3.4.3 version is still on my Ubuntu desktop since I have not updated it yet. My Windows laptop, and a few other Windows machines, have all been updated to 3.4.4. The whole point in a relatively long support for 3.3.x, is that we do not want to force companies to change to a new minor version fast. Therefore the bug fix releases were made. As far as I am concerned, 3.4.3 or 3.4.4 would work well for any business and I would give the businesses I deal with a copy of my 3.4.4 DVD, when I make it. I have given out my 3.4.3 DVD to many businesses so far as either a new version to replace the one I have already given them, or as their first version of LibreOffice. As the above text asks, it would be helpful to know what your users would be doing with LibreOffice. Since you did state something about already having them use OOo 3.2.x, their move to LibreOffice would easy as the current menu interface [non-Unity desktop users] is mostly the same as OOo 3.2.x. I went from OOo to LibreOffice in February when I first heard of LibreOffice. I did not find anything different than what I was using with OOo, for menu structures and such, but did find that LibreOffice had more options and functions included than my last used version of OOo. Now that LO is so much beyond what OOo was, LO is my only choice for a MS Office alternative. It is my only choice now since I use a Linux desktop as my primary system. I had MSO 2003 installed with OOo when I was using Windows on my primary system till I bought this system in Feb 2010. Then I switched over to all open-source software whether I was using my Ubuntu 10.04 LTS system or my XP or Vista systems. I find that if I have MSO and LO installed on my loan-out systems, most people seem to choose LO instead of MSO when I tell them I prefer LO. I have an old Compaq system I am getting ready for loaning to a lady who is in her early 70's and she tell me that Writer is just what she needs, and she makes a face when I ask her about Word. So in your business, I would go with 3.4.3 or 3.4.4 over 3.3.4, but you can download them and try each of them on your system to decide which one works the best for your needs and your users' needs. I gave you 3.4.3, since some people do not like to install a version that just came out a few weeks ago. I simply want to apply a style for editorial purposes while I am viewing the file. However, the issue is, I have to create the style in each individual document in order to apply it. That completely obliterates the efficiency of having a style. In essence, I want add a new style into the actual default settings opened by Calc. It looks like there is something that is defined as Spreadsheet that you can reset to once you've changed your default. I think that is where I want to make my changes. [libreoffice-users] Ubuntu update manager decided to replace my 3.4.3 with 3.3.3
I just tried to add an extension and got an error about needed at least 3.4 to install. Since I know I installed 3.4.3 when it came out, I looked into what was going on. I remember Ubuntu 10.04 LTS dealing with a few large Linux core updates over the past month or two. I wonder if one of these updates decided to update its repository version of LO from 3.3.2 to 3.3.3 and then to install it on my system. Since I know I installed 3.4.3 when it came out, this is the only way it could have happened. I found both 3.3.x and 3.4.x packages installed while I was looking in the package manager. I know I un-installed all of the 3.3.x packages before I installed the 3.4.x ones, so it must have been the updating system that installed them again. So I just un-installed the 3.3.3 packages [again] and installed the 3.4.4 packages. It was weird that the Office menu showed LO 3.4 but it opened 3.3.3, along with the desktop 3.4 icons, but the panel icons that were for 3.4.3 would not open LO at all. I wish there would be some system withing Ubuntu's update manager that would look to see if newer version of that packages were installed, before it decided to upgrade them back to the older versions in their repository. I have many packages, besides LO, that were manually installed with newer version over what is in the Ubuntu repositories. HP's printer driver install utility package, Artha [offline thesaurus] and Devede [creates TV-DVDs from computer video files] are just three of them. So, maybe someone in the top board/committee of TDF/LO might look into this situation with the distros and ask why this is being done? It is never nice for a distro to downgrade you package version without you knowing about it.
[libreoffice-users] Re: Styles not saving
I think I found a solution (it's a workaround really) Open one of your CSVs and format all the cells, columns, fonts, etc as you see fit. Then save this file as ODS (so you can keep all this formatting). You can now delete the cells values if you prefer to keep this Template clean. Now open one of your unformated CSVs Switch back to the open ODS and click on the corner header (left of A and above 1) or Edit, Select All or Ctrl+A (in Windows) and Ctrl+C (or Edit, Copy) Switch to the CSV, click on the corner header and choose Edit, Paste Special (or Ctrl+Shift+V) Uncheck the Paste All option and uncheck all options in Selection except for Formats. Your CSV should look perfectly formatted now (if the lines and columns are constant from one CSV to the next, of course :) ) -- View this message in context: http://nabble.documentfoundation.org/Styles-not-saving-tp3517061p3519244.html Sent from the Users mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

Re: [libreoffice-users] MS Formats revisited, a quote from MS.com
I have no experience with any MSO newer than 2003 [full package], unless it is their trial versions. I have used MSO 95 through 2003 from work, college, and at my home/office. I will not buy MSO 2010 or the next version, but will accept a copy from friends or clients. I do not think it is worth my paying their fees for their package, for options I may never want or need to use. That is one reason I tell people to use LO. You never have to pay for the updates or upgrades. It is free from your first download [or the version I provide them on DVD or CDs]. Better package without needing to pull out your credit card. Free is great in this economy, or any economy, plus more and more local, regional, national governments and government agencies world wide is dropping MSO for the free open-source alternative[s], along with small scale to world-wide scale companies are joining the open-source movement for dropping MSO in favor of open-source office suites. Then I tell them that LO is the best open-source office suite and if you Google its name, you will find 100's of articles praising LO as the best FOSS option currently on the market. As for multiple copies of ant office package, whether it is MSO LO, or OOo, I would not want to do that. MSO and LO on the same system works, if needed, but not two of the same package or LO and OOo on the same system. Never worked for me, and I do not really see the point unless you are to work with RC versions while keeping a stable version for your normal work environment. Should you not get the fixes with the Office updates or the OS updates and not have one interfering with the other? But that is Windows and MSO for you. I was download the updates for an XP system that had Office 2003 and it automatically downloaded MSO 2010 security updates as well as the MSO 2003 updates. Then it gave me a nasty dialog telling me that I cannot use this MSO 2010 security update since I do not have it. The automatic update system chose that package, not me. Another MS mess up and message that you need to install their latest and greatest product line. I had MSO 2003 in the XP system, just in case the user wanted to use Word instead of Writer, since that users use to have a laptop with Word on it. This is another reason I prefer Linux and LO. Microsoft Office 2010 includes the latest version of several fonts also available in Windows 7. However, Office 2010 cannot install these fonts on Windows Vista or Windows 2008 Server because they are system protected on these operating systems. As a result, Office 2010 documents may lay out differently on e.g., Windows 7 and Windows Vista. This issue is fixed in an update for Windows Vista and for Windows Server 2008. This update removes the system file protection of some font files. ImportantUsers who have already installed Office 2010 on Windows Vista and Windows 2008 Server, and willing to get the latest version of the fonts, must first uninstall Office 2010, and then install the Windows update prior to re-installing Office 2010. To install this update, follow the instructions in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/980248.; I always thought it was just between MS Office 2007 and MS Office 2010 but apparently the same program installed on different Windows OSes (ie Xp vs 7) may have been a main cause of problems that people have had. I'm using Win7 Libre Office 3.4.4 I can now open some of the MS Works, Word Processor files (.WPS) However, I find that any Works file .wps; that has a Table in it will not open in Libre Office. Am I missing something? Hello John, yes, unfortunately, the library libwps (used in LibreOffice) does not actually know how to read a table structure ; so normally, a file which contains some tables must be converted in a new file without any table. This functionality is pretty difficult to add because : - with the oldest versions of MS Works, a table seems to be stored in a WKS attachment ; so first, we will need to decode the WKS format :-) - with the newer versions of MS Works, even if for each table, it seems possible to find the zones of text which appear in its cells, retrieving the table structure (ie. finding the position of each cell in the table, ... ) seems difficult :-~ Osnola. PS: if you want to add a bug/request for this functionality, the best place is probably http://sourceforge.net/projects/libwps/ ( tracker menu )...

Re: [libreoffice-users] alternative to openclipart
In the LibreOffice-NA.US site, we have Open Clipart collections, almost 72 Meg of zipped files, from 2010. Until they come back up, you could download the artwork on that site. One reason for a DVD was to have most everything you need without needing to go online. [libreoffice-users] Backspace key in IDE behaves as Delete Key instead.
Backspace key behaves correctly in Calc and in Writer. In the Basic IDE, however, it eats the character to the right of the cursor. Should eat the character to the left of the cursor. Toggling Insert and Overlay work as expected. Delete key as expected. Delete eats the character to the right of the cursor. Quick search through Bugzilla returned way too many results on Backspace.
