[libreoffice-users] Installer Languages

2013-03-11 Thread Tom
Hi :)
There is some discussion on the translators list about which language
appears when you install LibreOffice. If you happen to live in a country
where the dominant language is not your own then when you buy a computer
which language is the LibreOffice installer in
1. your own language
2. the dominant language of the country
3. English (US)
Obviously you can change it or add different languages but you have to
understand the default language enough to be able to navigate your way
around. Apparently in Japan it's not possible to buy a machine with
Japanese on it. Keyboards have English as the main letter on each key but
it's rare to find one that has Japanese characters even as 2nd place. There
are many other reasons why a person's computer might be talking a language
that is not easy or them to understand. Here is how the Ubuntu installer
gets around the problem. Their installer lists languages with each name
written in the language it relates to ...

My machine's Regional settings are set to English so i get this at first
...
Ubuntu-English-v2.png
http://nabble.documentfoundation.org/file/n4042985/Ubuntu-English-v2.png
However if i use the keyboard aroows to move down a bit then i get to Greek
like this ...
Ubuntu-ελληνικά-v2.png
http://nabble.documentfoundation.org/file/n4042985/Ubuntu-%CE%B5%CE%BB%CE%BB%CE%B7%CE%BD%CE%B9%CE%BA%CE%AC-v2.png

note that the installer's dialogue box increases in size to accommodate the
increase in paragraph size.

Of course it's a bit annoying for me because i only understand 1 language so
i can't read all the different names. So if i want to install in Japanese
for one of my colleagues then i don't know the difference between Chinese,
Korean, Japanese or other ones that look similar to me (errr, ok i cheated
and used Google translate). I think the LibreOffice installer might be
even better if it could have 2 columns with the 2nd column being a listing
in whichever language happens to be selected at the time. For example in
the 1st screen-shot the columns would show (just restricting the
English English
ελληνικά Greek
日本人 Japanese

but in the 2nd screen-shot they would appear as
English Αγγλικά
ελληνικά ελληνικά
日本人 ιαπωνικά

I just wondered what other people here thought about the issue. Also i
wondered if anyone else have to do IT Support for people whose 1st language
is different from your own?
Regards from
Tom :)

Hi :)
Ahh, you missed the important bit.  Google is a 3rd party independent
organisation so there is not much point discussing their decisions.  They still
support us and i think we should keep supporting them.  That's not the issue.
The important thing is what their research discovered about OOXML and other MS

This should be controlled in Tools Options LibreOffice Writer
AutoCaption. Numbering captions by chapter should be set to None.
When you make this change, the caption numbers may not change
immediately. But if you then add an additional picture to the end of the
document, all the caption numbers change to what they should: 1 to xx.
To test this, I created a text document inserting some pictures and
Heading 1 styles between them. This test was done on LO 3.6.5 downloaded
from the LO website.

Lovely :-)

Unfortunately, this is hampered by the performance of the xlsx

So - these are certainly interesting issues.

There are several bugs describing this issue or similar ones:
 https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=30770
 https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=56259
 https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=56394

I have started a sponsoring offer for this, and am looking for
 participants:
 http://www.freedomsponsors.org/core/offer/221

Besides, I am trying to get the local business to join the sponsoring.

Sounds good to me; realistically (depending on whom you contract) I'd
expect a development outfit like Lanedo to charge Eur100/hr or more,
though Matus might be worth talking to (he charges a rather cheaper rate
and may be able to make some progress with that sum) - please contact
Tim Janik (Lanedo), and/or Matus - both of whom are CC'd off-list about
this if you're interested.

I can provide more test cases with real world documents, but not in
 public.

Usually -such- bad performance is just something really stupid going
on; it should show up on the profile nicely and not be -too- hideous to
improve. Then again, the size/scale of the improvement will vary
considerably, and committing in advance to make it fast is not really
that feasible :-) JFYI.

Thanks for getting involved though helping to fund development ! it'd
be great to follow up with interested individuals off-list.

ATB,

Michael.

[libreoffice-users] Re: [libreoffice-marketing] Java dependencies

2013-03-11 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
It's still Base and some Wizards and some Extensions.  Something like 12% of
the code is written in Java but it's in those areas that people rarely use.

Base can mostly be used without needing Java but only if you use an external
back-end rather than the in-built one.  I think the Report builder still would
need it but Base experts seem to be advising people to avoid that anyway.  The
internal back-end is HsqlDb which runs on Java even if you use the much more
up-to-date version from their website as an external back-end.  There are other
smaller faster ones for small amounts of data.  HsqlDb seems to be the best of
those even though it depends on Java.  Non-java ones tend to be better for
large amounts of data and include Postgresql and MySql / MariaDb.  These last 3
seem to be the most frequently recommended by the Base Experts.

I've forwarded this to the Users List because there are quite a few Base
Experts there that might be able to correct me if i'm wrong or just generally
be a bit more helpful than i've been.

I have enabled 'experimental features'
I have set macro security to 'Low'

I go to Organize macros-... - Python samples. The 'run' button is enabled,
the 'create', 'edit', 'rename' and 'delete' buttons are disabled.

Only for python are these buttons disabled, not other languages. Do I need

install procedure?

I do have python installed, but if there is something specific that must be
done for LO, I don't know what that is.

If I am simply missing a needed module, an informational message would be
appreciated rather than just a grayed out button.

Your description is my understanding. I just did a quick look on the
download website and I cannot find any such information. Why are these
dependencies not prominently spelled out in the System Requirements or
somewhere else on the download website page?

If they were, then the users would know what is needed for what.

You haven't mentioned the age-old need of Java for the Accessibility

[libreoffice-users] Java files

2013-03-11 Thread Png Brd
Hello, does Libre create those files? Apple has excluded the Java so as I used
your app it tried to open something that looked like Java preferences-I am not
certain though.
Of source it was not opened .
It happened as I was using some preferences of Libre in order to figure them
out .
Do you think the files in the picture have something to do with the function of
Libre ?
Thank you.

[libreoffice-users] Re: Java files

2013-03-11 Thread Tom
Hi :)
The mailing list doesn't accept attachments but you can upload your files to
Nabble so that people can choose to look at them. In Nabble start writing a
reply in your own thread and click on the More button. It inserts an
html-style link into your message which you can move around to get it in the
position you want.

In LibreOffice you can switch off java by

LibreOffice - Preferences - Java

(the Apple equivalent of
Tools - Options - Java )

At the top of the pop-up dialogue-box is a tick-box that you can untick to
stop using a java runtime environment. If you are using Base or
accessibility options then it will grumble and you will have to switch it
back on again but most people can keep it off quite comfortably.
Regards from
Tom :)

In LibreOffice 4.0.x, Java has been replaced with Advanced:
Tools Options LibreOffice Advanced
   OR
For OS X, LibreOffice Preferences LibreOffice Advanced.
(Most people do not notice that the last LibreOffice is open by
default. It contains User Data through Online Update. Click the arrow in
from of LibreOffice at the top to hide these.)
