Re: [libreoffice-users] State of password support.

2013-12-18 Thread Massimo Del Zotto
Yes Eric, those problems are surely related as crashes are involved in my
case as well (and I "fixed" it in the same way).
The implication is that temporary saves are not encrypted. Given the modest
size of **usual** files this could probably be done with little performance
loss but after all, this behavior is acceptable in my opinion. Should a
user need more protection, (s)he should likely consider full file-system
crypto.

No, I am referring to OOo. I am considering to switch to LO because of
this problem and I'm trying to figure out if this problem is considered
more important by LO developers.

I'm not well aware how the forum admins interact with the OOo developer

but luckly, I'm not really interested in that one.

So having a command that would take the label that you just created

next step, and I could not find the option.

If you are using a table, see previous advice. If not, I don't

This behaviour appears to depend on how your graphic is

It just seems that a "populate other empty labels on this sheet with

With tables, it's probably too simple for there to be a special

For all practical purposes, the advantages and virtues of using Master Document
functionality is completely irrelevant to the advantages and virtues of using
Styles.

Whether it is more appropriate for the content to maintained as One Single
File, One Master Document file, or 100 individual files, depends upon a dozen
different factors, starting with the type of content, and ending up with the
size of the components of that content.

Regardless of which approach is used (single document, master document,
individual files), what is crucial, is that a named template be used, which is
where all style changes are made.

[libreoffice-users] Re: Label creation Q

2013-12-18 Thread John R. Sowden

Good morning:

(Nice Farm Site Don) I do not know what ya'all mean by 'table' unless
you are saying that I might get the "name address" data from a
database. I am not. I am creating a shipping label to put on large (9
x 12) envelopes for my security system proposals. I am using equivalent
to Avery 5164 labels (6 on a page). I fill them out manually on a
typewriter.

My question related to the concept of "obvious" and "efficiency",
meaning most label creation would be:

1. Design label (lines, test colors, etc.)
2. Copy to other label locations on the sheet
3. Print Labels

So having a command that would take the label that you just created and
populate the other label locations on the sheet seemed to be the next
step, and I could not find the option.

Problem: In label design, the text and the drawing are separate objects,
so selecting the top left label buy highlighting the upper left to lower
right the, rt cl copy, put cursor in upper right box, upper right
corner, put the lower half of my original label (drawing only, no text)
below the original and nothing in the upper right box.

It just seems that a "populate other empty labels on this sheet with
original" would make sense.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Mail Merge and Labels

2013-12-18 Thread Don C. Myers

Hi Cliff,

When you use the table style templates, the wizard does not work. It is
designed for the frame style. What I do is fill in one label. Then if
you have a 30 label sheet with 3 columns and 10 rows, I copy and paste
it to the nest two labels to the right. Then I copy all three of those
labels on row 1, and paste into the complete second row. Then I copy
rows 1 and two and paste into rows 3 & 4, 5 & 6, 7 & 8, and 9 & 10. It
really goes pretty fast that way.

Don,

Initially I just want a sheet with all the labels the same. Being able to
fill a sheet with addresses from a database or even directly print envelopes
may be in the future.

For now I can obviously copy/paste to each label, but the wizard's way of
entering data for one then propagating it to all is handy for like a set of
return address labels.

Cliff

Hi Cliff,

Are you using fields from a data base, or do you simply want something
like return labels where every label is the same?

Don,

Thanks for the link to the templates, but, pardon my ignorance, what is the
proper way to setup a table based template?

The wizard is useful, but, as already discussed, the built-in templates often
don't work well. If the built in ones could be replaced with these table
based ones and still have the wizard work it would be the best of both worlds.

Cliff

Hi Virgil,

They have really worked well for me. With the frame based templates, I
always had trouble with the spacing on the labels changing as you would
get into the bottom third of the label sheet. The frame based templates
print out perfectly from top to bottom, and they are so easy to adjust.
I've left similar posts when people have had issues before, but it seems
very few are willing to try the table based formats. Maybe they try to
use the wizard, which is not the way to set up a table based template.

About 5 or 6 years ago when using OpenOffice to print Christmas labels,
I ran across an article about using table style labels in OpenOffice
instead of the type which come with Word, OpenOffice, and LibreOffice.
It is far easier to adjust the table style labels. To adjust the top
spacing, simply adjust the top margin for the page. To adjust the column
width, simply drag the column borders and the entire column is adjusted.
At one time OpenOffice had these label templates available as an
extension. I don't know if they still do or not. But they are available
from World Label here:
http://www.worldlabel.com/Pages/openoffice-template.htm
They can be downloaded individually, or all together as a pdf.

I've found them much easier to use and adjust, and have never used any
other label templates since then. Also, when you enter the text or
fields in them, the text is starts with being paced in the center of the
label between the top and the bottom, and then as additional lines are
added, the text of fields are automatically centered within the label
itself, top to bottom. I've never used the standard templates with
OpenOffice or LibreOffice since finding these. Nor have I wasted any
sheets of labels because they didn't print properly.

One obvious problem would be the necessity to indicate the order in

have that. In any case, would file10 become positioned after file9

If you needed either to list the files in the order in which you
wanted them incorporated, or else to readjust everything after
assembly, you would be better off (and achieve a more reliable
result) by simply importing one at a time.

[libreoffice-users] Bonus calculator in Calc

2013-12-18 Thread John Meyer
A while back I posted up about calculating bonuses based upon a lookup.
now, I need to add an additional step. Every once in a while, agents
get additional bonuses for sales outside of the normal commission
ladder. Here's the layout of the main sheet

A B CD E
Date1 Date2
Date3 .

agent ID Agent Name$### $### $###

What I wanted to do was add an "Additional Bonus sheet" With a layout
like this

A B C
agentID DateBonus

Then have a "final bonus screen" with this layout and formula similar to
the main sheet

A B CDE
Date1 Date2 Date3
agentIDAgent Name$(sales + add bonus
total) ...

Note: the agent can have multiple bonuses for the same date on the
additional bonus sheet. Where would i start doing something like that?
I might figure that out while I'm typing that out (which is probably one
of the most useful functions of this list), but right now I'm spinning.

Re: [libreoffice-users] with styles, is not master document functionality unnecessary+

2013-12-18 Thread Virgil Arrington
Another benefit of master documents is that it forces all styles of the same
name to appear the same. For example, suppose I have written five documents,
all having a style called "BodySingle." But, in one document, my
"BodySingle" style uses a Consolas font (good for on screen editing). In
another, I have set the "BodySingle" font to "Iowan Old Style," a personal
favorite of mine.

Now, let's say I combine these documents into a master document for final
output. The styles of the master document will control over the styles of
the individual files. So, in my master document, I set my "BodySingle" font
to Linux Libertine G with a host of expert effects (old style numbers,
historic or discretionary ligatures, etc.) This is great for printing a
final document (to either a printer or PDF file), but not so effective for
onscreen editing. So, I can change the final output by editing only the
styles of the master document without having to edit the styles in each
individual document.

Master document are not only about sharing styles (in fact, I never saw
them in this light), it's about splitting your work in easily manageable
smaller files. I don't even know why having styles would concern having the
possibility to create a master document.
When you're working on a reasonnably large project, it's simply easier to
split it. For example, having each chapter in it's own file, instead of
loading one huge file. It's more stable and easier to navigate.
Ahem, still don't get why you're mixing the presence of styles and master
document. The only link I can think of is that a master document's style
override the sub-documents, but even then... maybe you can clarify what you
meant?

o Put the cursor in the cell containing the text.

o Press Ctrl+A again to select the entire table.
o Press Ctrl+V to paste copies of the text into all the cells at once.

There is another portable apps type of place that has every version of
LibreOffice but i'm not sure of the address. The marketing team were
going to put their link on the same page as the link i just gave but i
didn't read the page to see if it's there.

Re: [libreoffice-users] State of password support.

2013-12-18 Thread Eric Beversluis
I don't know if this is relevant to Massimo's case but it might be:
I had a problem a while back with Fedora 15 (and I don't remember which
version of OO or LO): I would discover that I could open a
password-protected spreadsheet without being prompted for the password.
It turned out that it had something to do with Fed 15 shutting down w/o
prompting to save an open and changed spreadsheet. When restarted, the
spreadsheet would open without password protection. The workaround
seemed to be to do a 'save as' at that point and check 'save with
password'.

More recently this hasn't seemed to be a problem, but I think it has
happened once or twice, though I didn't bother to try to figure out why.

You mean recently? As in the latest version of LO has a problem with
passwords?

The forum administrator strongly
suggested me to not use it, and even pointed out a few previous cases in
which password protection caused data loss (!!!).

Which forum, do you have a link to the post?

I think *this is unacceptable *so I started looking more seriously at LO.
Digging the mailing list archives, I noticed there are quite a few messages
regarding password protection. It seems most problem were between keyboard
and chair, the only exception being perhaps an inter-operability problem
after switching to AES-256.

In your experience, how is LO with password protection?
Massimo, you seem to be more informed of this than I, but, I am only
aware of one (what I consider) real bug that existed with LO and
passwords. At one point, I was no longer able to open a password
protected file. Specifically, one version of LO was not able to open a
password protected file. I am pretty sure it was LO and not AOO anyway.

I believe that I have seen things such as:

1. I forgot my password, how I open my document
2. I am not able to open a password protected document created by MS Office
3. Problems signing a document

I don't ever remember anyone saying that password protection should be
dropped. Does not mean that it has not been said. I have seen people
pushing to drop the ability to write non-ODF format, but I don't
remember anyone advocating no support for passwords.

I have also seen reports of another bug that sometimes causes total data
loss of a file, but, since it is not reproducible in any sort of
meaningful way, the bug has not been researched.

Don,

Initially I just want a sheet with all the labels the same. Being able to
fill a sheet with addresses from a database or even directly print envelopes
may be in the future.

For now I can obviously copy/paste to each label, but the wizard's way of
entering data for one then propagating it to all is handy for like a set of
return address labels.

Worked very nicely. Is there a feature to populate the rest of the labels

That depends rather on how you have created your label - which you
have kept a secret! Have you used a table?

o Put the cursor in the cell containing the text.
o Press Ctrl+A to select all the text in that cell.
o Press Ctrl+C to copy that text.
o Press Ctrl+A again to select the entire table.
o Press Ctrl+V to paste copies of the text into all the cells at once.

I trust this helps.
