The thing in my answer was to try Gnumeric

Renaming (or deleting) the User Profile seems to fix something like
90% of weird problems that suddenly start but didn't occur before.
It's a "magic cure all" worth knowing. I prefer renaming so i can go
back (some day (if i ever get around to it)) to get details of why it
happened. I keep meaning to back-up my User Profile when i get it
 just right but keep forgetting.

2014-02-19 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
I think it might be best to start a new thread with a fresh new email
to the Users List

Users@Global.LibreOffice.Org

(capitals or lower-case makes no difference in email addresses except
that CamelCase is easier to read)

A new subject-line mentioning "broken links" might attract the
attention of the right people. I have no idea about this topic.

Re: [libreoffice-users] ver. 4.2 copy/past bug

2014-02-19 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Brilliant! Nice one Dave! :)

Tons of features and stuff was added to Calc for the 4.2.0. Plus we
got a massive code donation from AOO to deal with Accessibility
issues. Both of those are things a lot of us have been anxiously
waiting for but both arriving at once was a surprise. Any time any
software has new features there is a good chance that unexpected
problems will arise.

I've just heard from another mailing list that the 4.2.1rc1 has fixed
a ton of such issues and 4.2.1"final release" is racing to be released
= to the point where it might not have all the languages fully
translated even where the translations have been done. RC = "Release
Candidate" and we normally have 2 of those with the rc2 being
identical, or almost identical to the final release. The 4.2.2 is due
to follow quite swiftly and that will have the languages and will
smooth out wrinkles in the 4.2.1.

So, we do need people to use the 4.2.1 as much as possible. There is
tons of amazing stuff in the 4.2.x branch that was not in previous
branches and we need people to post bug-reports about any slightest
problem they find so that it can settle down quickly.

For my colleagues machines i am not going to install 4.2.x until it
reaches 4.2.4. But for my own machines i intend to install it asap.
However i tend to only use the fairly basic features so i probably
wont find any problems.

Similarly it's unlikely you will have any troubles with the 4.2.1
unless you are as unlucky as the o.p. (Tom Cloyd), if you do then go
back to the 4.1.4 and keep following that branch just occasionally
trying out this newest feature-rich branch to see if your issue has
been resolved yet.

Regards from
Tom :)

Sounds like the problem I've had.

Next time the Document Recovery window appear press Esc instead of the

Saw this tip while lurking on this list and it worked for me.

I stated to do the "renaming" of the preferences folder, since that was
the only way I could get it to stop trying to recover a file that is not
longer on the system. I could get into LO and work on documents, but
every time I started LO it tried to recover the missing file. So there
was something "wrong" with the file what includes the recovery info when
you start up.

I never seen the "Esc" option before, or not remember seeing it.

Hi :)
Noise is sometimes good. This list often solves problems as a team by
"brain storming". Looking through the list of "known issues" for the
particular release is a brilliant idea.

It's clearly something odd and unusual because otherwise Brian or
Regina or someone would have given us the right answer by now.

[libreoffice-users] Getting Hyperlinks to work in pdf exports

2014-02-19 Thread CVAlkan
Hi:

I'm currently using LO Version: 4.3.0.0.alpha0+ on 64 bit Ubuntu 12.04LTS,
but have run into this issue in the past with earlier versions.

If I create a phrase and format it as a hyperlink, control+clicking on it
launches the browser and goes to the specified page just fine.

However, when exporting the document as a pdf, the link doesn't seem to
work. I've tried various combinations of the check boxes on the pdf export
dialog, but nothing seems to work.

Is this a bug, or am I just missing some key setting?

Any pointers would be appreciated. Thanks.

It definitely worked in 4.1.4.2, so it's either a regression or something
fishy. You could temporarily try renaming your profile to check if it is
related to some custom settings.

Note though that the "latest" LO version is 4.2. I believe discussions
regarding future versions (alpha, beta, rc...) are not meant to be on the
general user list, but are better directed towards dev and bugtrackers.

[libreoffice-users] libreoffice - Internet Explorer impossible to open ODx document from web pages

2014-02-19 Thread Bertella Gianmarco
Dear all , I can't open from any web pages (https or http) any link to a
ODT/ODS/ODP document using IE8 or IE11 (I guess the same for IE 10 and
9 but I don't have a PC with them) on windows platform running Win7 PRO
sp1 32bit or Win 7 enterprise 64bit , XP pro sp3.
This happens for example trying to open a libreoffice documentation to
the page https://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/documentation/ or any
other link found on google that address ODx documents.
When I click on it I got a popup asking to open or save the file. If I
try to open it (without any Libreoffice app opened) but in this case
apparently nothing happens.
If I look at the programs running I can see that 2 Libreoffice process
are opened when I click on the web link.
I can then open manually LO , use it but I can't close it until I close
the IE left after pressing on OPEN popup.
Nothing change if I set LO to stay opened at the startup in background
nor if I try to open the link with the LO application already opened.
I had the same issue on several PC using different version of LO 4.x
(verified on 4.1.0.4 , 4.1.2.3 , 4.1.4.1 , 4.1.5.2 , 4.2.0.4)
No issue if I use another browser (firefox, chrome, opera) or if I install
(standard setup) Openoffice 4.0.1 , it work immediately , and when I
uninstall OO and reinstall LO again the same issue.

Anybody else experienced this kind of issue ?
Can I do some other check to better identify where the problem could be
and possibly solve it ?

Thanks in advance

2014-02-19 Thread Bertella Gianmarco
Hi Tom , thks for your answer . I do all my test on PCs with IE and
windows always updated to the latest patch released by MS.

I agree with you about your opinion about MS.
Unfortunately this kind of issue seems to affect many users that don't
want change their browser (sometimes I'm talking of very basic users
that are scared to use new program or don't have a knowdledge to install
and use new browser ... other times could be medium size enterprise
where the user are forced to use IE for specific application and prefer
to haave only one browser and not one for app...).
The strange thinks is that the problem don't arise with Openoffice and
that's strange .
If libreoffice would try to be the best opesource office suite and
replace MSO also in medium enterprise I think it need to avoid at least
this basic fault.
Ofcourse what I said is valid if confirmed that this is a bug and I'm
not doing wrong things.
I will wait someone else that could confirm or not this issue. I guess
not specific installation , any version of Win with IE could already
give me more details.

Thanks Tom

[libreoffice-users] read-only problem

2014-02-19 Thread edo1
I saved a small (14 page) styled part of a large project as read-only to
protect
against accidents while I did something else. Later wanting to check a
style, I
unchecked read-only and reopened the file. Yet it still opens as read-only
and
"styles and formatting" is grayed out. Does anyone know how this can happen
and how I can prevent it?

The best I could do was copy the contents into a new file from which I could
retrieve the styles. That work-around will be a great pain with the rest of
the
project. I'm running LO 4.2.0.4 in Win7 x64. Thanks for any help! - edo1

Re: [libreoffice-users] libreoffice - Internet Explorer impossible to open ODx document from web pages

2014-02-19 Thread Kracked_P_P---webmaster

I really think that most of the non-IE browsers have an add-on to read
the ODF content. Not always well, but it works.

Maybe there might be an add-on for IE in their download/add-on system to
display content. I do not know if IE will display MS document formats
either.

I stick with Firefox, since I have less trouble with it and I can add on
a lot of "security" options from their add-on and extension pages.
Sometimes you can find these add-ons, or links to them, from the parent
software sites. I have many add-ons to FF that came from links while
installing a specific package or three. I look for them.

IT just make sense to have things like displaying document content in
your browsers. PDF is one of the ones that I use a lot. I view it in
the browser [FF] and then decide if I want to save it to my disc[s].

I wonder how hard it would be to create on for IE for displaying ODF
content, like FF and others do.

Re: [libreoffice-users] read-only problem

2014-02-19 Thread Kracked_P_P---webmaster

Last time I had a read-only document, I used Save As and made sure it
was not saved as read-only. You have to use a different file name to
get it to work, or at least it did the last time I needed to do that. I
think that was during the 4.0.4 or .5 version of LO.

[libreoffice-users] Re: Getting Hyperlinks to work in pdf exports

2014-02-19 Thread CVAlkan
Cley:

Thanks much for the response. I mentioned that I had the same problem
earlier, and happen to also have version 4.2 on my machine as well (I needed
to use the 4.3 beta with my major project because of a specific bug that it
fixed). I have the same links issue with pdfs in version 4.2 and my
recollection is that it's been well over a year since I last attempted
unsuccessfully to make this work, so we're probably talking about something
in the 3.x range.

So - therefore - it seems to me that maybe I'm just not setting it up
properly. The linked text shows up in the pdf as a formatted link and
clicking it highlights the whole phrase, so at least something is getting
passed on - it just doesn't jump to a web page.

Can you tell me what settings you use on the Links panel of the pdf export
dialog box? I am assuming that is where I must be setting things wrong, as I
can't find anywhere else that makes any reference to links. As I said, the
definition within Writer is apparently good, as control-clicking on the
links in the document take me right to the web browser with the correct page
opened.

Thanks again for responding ...

Frank

[libreoffice-users] Open plain text with double-spacing

2014-02-19 Thread nicolai . rostov
Hi, I was wondering if it's possible to make LibreOffice Writer open a plain
text file with paragraph double-spacing already applied to all of it.

My aim is to be able edit plain text files in (i) serif fonts and (ii)
double-spaced paragraphs.

I keep my documents in plain text but find myself having to change the
entire formatting of the document every time I open a plain text file for
editing.

I managed to get (i) working by means of Tools: Options: LibreOffice: Fonts:
Replacement Table.

However, I couldn't get (ii). I tried to create a template in which the
"Preformatted Text" style looks the way I want it to be, and then I made this
template default. But LibreOffice Writer just ignores the default template
when opening plain text files.

Thank you.

I did mean the Esc key. And, at least on my system, it did make the always
appearing "Document Recovery" dialog stop showing up when none of the
dialog box controls would.

Re: [libreoffice-users] ver. 4.2 copy/past bug

2014-02-19 Thread Tom Cloyd

Tom -

I started a new profile. All has been well. Then I copied over my
dictionaries, and a few other files. Still no issues.

But this morning, which is the first time I really had a chance to see
if I gotten past the problem I initially reported (for complex reasons I
won't go into), the initial problem occurred once again.

Given that an update to this release is expected soon, and that I've
found a workaround, I'll stay with the 4.2 release.

An update on the "broken links" problem -

The links DO work, if one uses Ctrl-click to activate them. But the
link, when examined, has a "!!br0ken!!" in the target area. I'll post
this as a new thread.

I see "!!br0ken!!"

But the tool-tip over the link advises me to try "Ctrl-click" and that

Is this the default? Could be, for all I know. And why does the link
indicate it's broken, yet it still works?

I can make NO sense of this, I'll admit.

Tom,

Well, I'm back on ver. 4.2. I have a lot of files in Calc with links - to
various sheets, and to other files. THEY ARE ALL BROKEN NOW.

This is a disaster, and reverting LO isn't, I think going to fix it.

Sigh.

Re: faster load/save of files - xml is a text format, and will necessarily
be slower than a binary equivalent - that's my understanding, anyway. I
noticed quite some time ago, when converting from Excel to Calc that the
save took about 3 times as along.

Thanks! :)

Xml is the way all the office formats are going. It does have 3 main
advantages afaik;
1. When things go wrong it's easier to poke around inside and maybe
even fix corrupted files
2. It's easy to compress further into Zip or other compression formats
3. errr, oh i thought it was faster and easier to load/save but i've
never seen anyone produce stats about it. Now you mention it i've no
idea whether it feels faster or slower to open files.

As for your User Profile, it might be a really good idea to
occasionally create a back-up copy in the same way and then keep the
one with the settings you like best to put on any machine just before
installing LibreOffice or OpenOffice so that you get all your fav.
settings but with all the relevant updated bits added by the
installer.

As for gnumeric - that's totally new to me. I like calc, but do NOT like
the

make it easier).

Renaming (or deleting) the User Profile seems to fix something like
90% of weird problems that suddenly start but didn't occur before.
It's a "magic cure all" worth knowing. I prefer renaming so i can go
back (some day (if i ever get around to it)) to get details of why it

[libreoffice-users] ver. 4.2 broken link problem

2014-02-19 Thread Tom Cloyd
I have a number of Calc spreadsheets which contain lots of links, both
to other cells in the same sheet, and in the same document, and to other
spreadsheets as well.

They are now all turning up with the links utterly trashed. But I can't
find a pattern to it. Some calc. documents are OK. Many are not.

Needless to say, this is a bit of a disaster, as I'm having to
reconstruct a lot of links.

I can't really make any sense of this, yet.

Re: [libreoffice-users] read-only problem

2014-02-19 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Use "Save As" to give it a new name. I tend to add "-v1" to the end
or gradually increase that number. So in a folder i get names such as
Khidmat-v1.odt
Khidmat-v2.odt
Khidmat-v3.odt
Then if something has gone wrong with the latest version it's easy to
go back to a fairly recent version. I tend to find that files become
read-only if opened over a network by a different desktop machine or
after rebooting the machine i am using.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Open plain text with double-spacing

Plain text files are files without formatting. That's what makes them
"plain" text. I've never known a way to apply paragraph formatting to a
plain text file and have it remain with the file for later use.

Subject: [libreoffice-users] Open plain text with double-spacing

Hi, I was wondering if it's possible to make LibreOffice Writer open a plain
text file with paragraph double-spacing already applied to all of it.

My aim is to be able edit plain text files in (i) serif fonts and (ii)
double-spaced paragraphs.

I keep my documents in plain text but find myself having to change the
entire formatting of the document every time I open a plain text file for
editing.

I managed to get (i) working by means of Tools: Options: LibreOffice: Fonts:
Replacement Table.

However, I couldn't get (ii). I tried to create a template in which the
"Preformatted Text" style looks the way I want it to be, and then I made
this

template default. But LibreOffice Writer just ignores the default template
when opening plain text files.

Thank you.

Plain text opens here in "preformatted text" and font "Liberation Mono".
I see no option to change that behavior.

I keep my documents in plain text but find myself having to change the

I managed to get (i) working by means of Tools: Options: LibreOffice: Fonts:

I would expact that, because the default template is used for _new_
documents, and a file opened is not new.

You can make a template with the desired settings. Then do not open the
plain text directly. But start with a new file based on your template
and then use Insert > File to get the plain text. It will use the style
of that paragraph where it is inserted.

Or don't care that it opens with the wrong font and spacing, and change
it after opening. (1) When you once make a macro to change it and assign
it to a button or to a shortcut, it will only be 1 click to convert the
text. (2) Enable "Line Spacing : 2" in the Formatting toolbar or assign
it to a short cut. Then you get it with actions: Ctrl+A (select all),
Ctrl+0 (set TextBody style), and Click or shortcut for Line Spacing : 2.
I think, that is not too long.

Kind regards

Here's a PDF file, generated from LO, with a working hyperlink:

(if you'd like to open it, the PDF can be opened in LO Writer as it
incorporate the original document).

It include the PDF dialog open on the "link" tab. It's in french, but given
the large number of options, I think you'll have no difficulty to see
what's what. In short: nothing checked, all on default settings.

Maybe the issue lies with your PDF reader instead? As far as I can
remember, for *me* the URL in PDF always worked... quite the opposite of
your experience :\

Re: [libreoffice-users] Open plain text with double-spacing

Yes. But the formatting is not supposed to remain. It's just for displaying
it on the screen. I just want to edit plain text in a more comfortable
environment, and still keep them as old plain text.

As far as I know, only LibreOffice can do both (serif and double-spaced
plain text), even if not automatically upon opening a file.

It's not saving but just opening with a particular style.

Thanks,
Nicolai

[libreoffice-users] Declare Statment - Calc

2014-02-19 Thread Bill Martin
I've tried to implement the simple example shown in the Calc Help system for
the Declare Statement. Somewhere it expects to find a file: user32.dll but
I have no idea where to find it. Windows has many user32.dll files for
it's own use but presumably none of them are relevant to LibreOffice. The
file does not seem to be included in the DLL files that install with Libre.
So does it need to be downloaded from the web somewhere and manually
installed?I'm just trying to understand how to link Basic to a DLL file so I
can go off and do something more complex. Thanks.Bill

Hi Nicolai,

nicolai.ros...@gmail.com schrieb:

Hello Regina,

A macro is an excellent idea. Let me see how I can do that.

Of cause you can write a "true" macro, but the needed operations are
also available by the macro recorder. So you can use that tool.

First you have to enable the macro recorder.
(1) Goto Tools > Options > LibreOffice > Advanced. Check "Enable macro
recording (limited)". OK

Some preparations.
(2)Right click the formatting toolbar, click item "Visible buttons",
click on item "Line Spacing :2". Later you can deactivate it the same way.

(3)Open such plain text document.

Now record your actions
(4)Tools > Macros > Record Macros. Notice, that you get a little
floating toolbar, where you later on can stop the recording.

(5)Crtl+A, to select the whole text
(6)Select a paragraph style from the drop down list, which has a serif
font as default, for example "Text Body" or "Default Style". You should
use a predefined style, so that it is always available.

(7)Click on the button "Line Spacing : 2".
(8)Click on right arrow key in the navigation block. That will remove
selection.

(9)Click on "Stop recording".

Next actions will save the macro to your user directory. You get a
dialog for organization of macros. The part My Macros > Standard >
Module should already be selected.
(10)In the field "Macro name" enter a name for the macro. This name is
later on used as default label for the button.

(11)Click on button "Save".

Now we generate an easy access to the macro using a button.
(12) Right click the formatting toolbar, click item "Customize Toolbar".
In the "Command" list click on that item, which you want to be left of
the new button, click button "Add.."
(13) In the "Category" list scroll down to the end. Open the +
"LibreOffice Macros", "My Macros", "Standard", and "Module".
(14) Now you should see your macros' name in the list "Commands". Click
on it. Click button "Add". Click button "Close".
(15) Look whether the macro name is at the desired position; you can
move it up or down with the arrow buttons. To use a different label
click button "Modify" and then item "Rename". At last click OK.

(16) Close your document without saving the changes.

Test your macro.
(17) Open a plain text document.
(18) Click on the new macro button.
Does it work?

Alternative/ In addition you can assign a shortcut to the macro.
(19) Tools > Customize > Keyboard
(20)~(13) In the "Category" list scroll down to the end. Open the +
"LibreOffice Macros", "user", "Standard", and "Module".
(21)~(14) Now you should see your macros' name in the list "Function".
Click on it.
(22) In the "Shortcut keys" list click on the desired shortcut, and then
on button "Modify". OK.

If you are curious, how the macro looks like: Tools > Macros > Organize
Macros > LibreOffice Basic. Select your macro and click on button "Edit".

Kind regards
Regina

Re: [libreoffice-users] libreoffice - Internet Explorer impossible to open ODx document from web pages

2014-02-19 Thread Bertella Gianmarco

thanks Kracked ,
concerning the issue I'm reporting here , I don't try to open the ODF
document inside the browser window (I guess the add-on you refer to work
in this way) but I guess there is a call from the browser to the
default program defined in windows for the specific extension or type of
file.
In all the browser , clicking on the web link in the document ,
automatically libreoffice is opened and show the content of the document
(writer for ODT,calc for ODS and Impress for ODP).
In fact also IE like the other browser start Libreoffice , but for some
reason it "freeze" its process without open nothing on the screen (I
said "freeze" because also if I manually open LO I can't close it in any
way until I close IE, so something could be blocked between the 2 app).
The same kind of files ODF are correctly opened if I install OpenOffice
Instead Libreoffice , for that reason I suspect there is something
Libreoffice could do like openoffice does and in this case there's
nothing to do on IE side.
Ofcourse this is only my opinion but I don't have a so higher skill to
be sure to know where the problem comes.
Anybody can confirm this issue with windows xp , 7 , 8 and any version
of IE ?

thanks to all.

Maybe there might be an add-on for IE in their download/add-on system

formats either.

I stick with Firefox, since I have less trouble with it and I can add
on a lot of "security" options from their add-on and extension pages.
Sometimes you can find these add-ons, or links to them, from the
parent software sites. I have many add-ons to FF that came from links
while installing a specific package or three. I look for them.

IT just make sense to have things like displaying document content in
your browsers. PDF is one of the ones that I use a lot. I view it in

I wonder how hard it would be to create on for IE for displaying ODF
content, like FF and others do.

[libreoffice-users] Re: Getting Hyperlinks to work in pdf exports SOLVED

2014-02-19 Thread CVAlkan
Thanks Cley:

I have been a victim of not digging deeply enough ...

I attempted to open my pdf using the FoxIt reader, and everything worked
just fine. Then I discovered why Adobe Reader (my default) couldn't handle
it - I just hadn't found the right security dialog (there are quite a few of
them). Once I found Preferences | Trust Manager | Allow all web sites,
everything worked fine.

This is obviously not a "safe" way to do this I guess - I suspect that one
would normally want the security setting to deny all such requests unless
the document overrides it, but I'll need to research that.

So, the problem appears not to have anything at all to do with Libre Office.

Sigh... I've been using computers since before the IBM PC and continually
wonder how someone with no experience gets anything done.

BUT - you pushed me in the right direction by suggesting another reader, so
Thanks Much!

[libreoffice-users] The hidden comments may get disappeared in the 4.2.0.4 release

2014-02-19 Thread Michael Wu

Dear all,

If you use the hidden comments in your libreoffice spreadsheet,
I suggest not using the current release 4.2.0.4 because the hidden
comments may get disappeared without any warning. I have reported this
issue to the bugzilla as the bug 75236. Please be careful to use the
4.2.0.4 release.

Thank you and regards.

[libreoffice-users] System-wide document template?

2014-02-19 Thread nicolai . rostov
I was wondering if there is a system-wide document template that overrides a
user's default template when opening plain text files. If there is one, I
will change it.

LibreOffice Writer just ignores my default template when opening plain text.

Try creating a new style and saving your document as your default template.
The new style is gone if you open a plain text file.

I thought that Regina had helped you resolve this issue, but...

Yes, there is a global default template, but it is hard wired (coded)
into the software. That is what the user's default or any other template
overrides.

Unless there is something extremely abnormal about your plain text file,
the user default or any other template used definitely will format plain
text as set in the template. So the question is:
Are you setting the default template as described here?:
https://help.libreoffice.org/Writer/Changing_the_Default_Template
and in chapter 10 of the Writer User Guide here:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Publications#LibreOffice_Writer_Guide

I am cc'ing you with an example template (the list server normally
strips attachments). You do not have to install or do anything special
with it. Simply open it in Writer and then use the "Insert -> File..."
menu option to insert any plain text file. Your text should appear in
some ugly blue font, with double spaced lines centered on the page.

Please write back to the list and let us know if this works for you.

Regards
Dave

Re: [libreoffice-users] Open plain text with double-spacing

2014-02-19 Thread Brian Barker

plain text but find myself having to change the entire formatting of
the document every time I open a plain text file for editing.

Sometimes it's best to rethink your problem instead of trying to solve it.

o If you open each new file to edit it only once, it is hardly any
problem to select all the text and apply a suitable paragraph style -
just that once.

o If you need to open the same files repeatedly to edit them, the
obvious solution is to save them in LibreOffice's native .odt
format. So now we have to ask why you need plain text versions of
the file. If you wish to print your edited files, you would not want
to use plain text. If you wish to exchange your documents with
others, you would want to use either word-processor formats (such as
.odt or perhaps .doc) or perhaps PDFs. You'd need plain text output
only if you were perhaps feeding your edited results to some other
application which required this format - and in this case it would be
a simple matter to save a plain text copy of your edited document
when necessary.

I trust this helps.

I'm guessing from your question and sample spreadsheet that by "sort out"
you wish to have the email addresses appear in a separate column. If
correct the following may not be suitable but...

Use a filter on the columns. It will present a list of entries in your
members table showing only the "member type" the list was filtered by. Copy
the filtered list of email address to wherever you need them.

To filter...
1) select the entire member table, including the column headings
2) from the menu select "Data | Filter | AutoFilter", column headings will
now have a small downward arrowhead at their right hand edge
3) click the arrowhead to the right of "member type"
4) check the box next to each member type you wish to see in the filtered
list
5) click OK

The member list is now displayed filtered by the member type(s) you chose.
The emails can be copy/pasted wherever else you need to use them.

You should be aware
- the entire member list must be selected to begin, step 1 above, or you
won't get all the members you expect in your filtered list
