Re: [libreoffice-users] Gray boxes on copy paste from browser
At 10:50 20/02/2014 -0800, Shawn Yve wrote: Background info: I'm a moderator for a writers workshop forum and we turn our lessons into a PDF at the end of a workshop. When I copy/paste from chrome into writer I end up with small gray boxes (one space height/width) scattered through my document. The most obvious possibility is that these are non-breaking spaces. You will know that HTML requires browsers to conflate consecutive whitespace characters into a single space. Where necessary, this can be prevented by the use of the HTML non-breaking space character, nbsp;. In addition (and as its name suggests), the character can be used to prevent consecutive words splitting across a line break. The same concept exists in word processors (see Insert | Formatting Mark | Non-breaking space) and the Paste function is giving you like for like - honouring the HTML source code and not just the appearance of the web page in your browser. To get rid of them I must either delete each one or paste to textpad and then back which of course loses all formatting. In fact, you don't need to get rid of them. If you want to preserve the spacing that they represent, ignore them and proceed. They will show up - well, *not* show up, in fact! - just as spaces would in your final PDF document. (There is one difference: non-breaking spaces do not expand as do ordinary ones in Justified text.) If you do wish to remove or replace them (with the consequent change to the document formatting), you can search for them in the normal way. Select one of the characters before you open the Find Replace dialogue and you will find it helpfully inserted for you in the Search for box. If you just find the grey appearance troublesome, you could replace them with ordinary spaces - but proper document formatting might be better. I've also tried firefox and copy/pasting from other forums/pages. I've even opened an emailed doc where the sender copied from a browser and the boxes still show up. As you will now understand, this is because the web pages and word processor documents contain such special characters and the Paste function is honouring them faithfully. I hope someone can help as I'm stumped and will have to return to open office as this is a time sink. :( Surely OpenOffice behaves identically in this respect? Or have I misunderstood the whole problem? I trust this helps. Re: [libreoffice-users] HOW CAN I CONVERT A NUMBER IN LibreOffice CALC TO TEXT IN LibreOffice CALC?
I think the formula you want is TEXT. I'm not too sure on the format parameter to this function, haven't checked that, but for me a format string of #.## worked fine for a number with a decimal place. You should be able to find further details of the format string in the help or online. So, for example, I put the number 1234.5 in cell A1, then in cell B1 I put the formula '=TEXT(A1,#.##)', and now cell B1 holds the text string 1234.5. I hope this is what you were looking for. Re: [libreoffice-users] HOW CAN I CONVERT A NUMBER IN LibreOffice CALC TO TEXT IN LibreOffice CALC?
Hi Dennis, What format will the numbers themselves be entered in? In addition to TEXT you can also use the DOLLAR function, which will use your localization information to format the number as text string with a currency symbol, thousands separator and decimal places. To use the TEXT function, you can use a format string of $#,#.## to get those things as well. I know of no way to get the number written out as words, at least not with stock Calc. This question (see URL [1]) on ask.libreoffice.org discusses this, and three possible solutions are given: * This add-on (see URL [2]), but it seems that it is no longer maintained, and may not work for the latest versions of LO. I haven't tried it, so you'll have to see for yourself. * There is also mention of this Microsoft article that gives some macro code for Excel (see URL [3]), which presumably could be converted to work with Calc. * Some code is also given, presumably for LO Basic, but it seems to be for Indian currency. This could probably also be converted to your currency of choice. [1]http://ask.libreoffice.org/en/question/1194/convert-numbers-to-english-words/ [2]http://extensions.libreoffice.org/extension-center/numbertext-1 [3]http://support.microsoft.com/kb/213360 So in short there seems to be no easy way of doing this. You might find that the extension works for you, or you might have to write a macro to do this, using one of the two examples as a starting point. Hope this helped. Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: read-only problem
Hi :) I think a few of us have found that files do become read-only without us being really clear exactly why. We just work-around it rather than hunt down specific causes and those work-arounds often result in creating a back-up of the file so it's a bonus rather than a problem. I hadn't realised it might be worth posting a bug-report but maybe now might encourage people to do so if they encounter the problem in the future. Re: [libreoffice-users] HOW CAN I CONVERT A NUMBER IN LibreOffice CALC TO TEXT IN LibreOffice CALC?
Hi :) It's an unusual problem that looks a lot like a fairly frequently asked question. Your question has an extra twist which we didn't notice earlier. I am not sure if there is an easy way to convert numbers to words. ie 2,000 to Two thousand So far people have been talking about how to make the numbers look like numbers still but just be unable to perform calculations using them. It's good for telephone numbers, zip-codes and that sort of thing. There might be an Extension (what other people call Add-ons or Plug-ins) to do that in LibreOffice itself or there might be a separate app (or program) that can do this outside of LibreOffice. Our Extensions page is here; http://www.libreoffice.org/features/extensions/ Most are written by 3rd parties but some are very popular. There are also Extensions written for OpenOffice which might still work with LO or it might be easy to contact their devs to ask them if they could update it for LO. Sorry this isn't very helpful! [libreoffice-users] Application of Speadsheet
At my wife's church auction, they are going to use a spreadsheet (as long suffering readers already know :-)). Attendees' names and paddle numbers will be entered at the start of the auction. The second phase is the entry of purchased item codes, winning bid amounts and paddle numbers of winners. Third phase is checkout. I was thinking of copying the spreadsheet as it existed after phase 2 to a second laptop so that people could checkout with last-names-A-through-M going to laptop 1 and N-Z, to laptop 2. 1. Does that make more sense than dividing them by paddle number? 2. When it's all over, how do I combine the two spreadsheets?? [libreoffice-users] Re: Calc - sort in to columns
Hi Nice try Paul I've never used pivit tables so didn't know they could produce that, which as you say may be a sufficient workaround, I could use it and it gives the closest result to what I want I've tried. But really the more I think about it the more I know a simple text file will be the easiest to maintain and for the users to use. I'm still toying with the database idea, but in truth that would be more to satisfy my own urge to relearn and tinker. If you do it, you should probably have a backups on notebooks to use if Google spreadsheet locks up on you. With luck, someone else will tell us how to merge spreadsheets. I've also merged spreadsheets with a lot of manual work, sorting the two on the same key, then copying the two into the same sheet, then inserting blank rows in each as needed to match everything. To avoid that, I usually use R (www.r-project.org) to merge spreadsheets. However, if you don't know R, you probably don't want to learn just for this. hope this helps. spencer On 2/21/2014 1:21 PM, Alan B wrote: On Fri, Feb 21, 2014 at 3:05 PM, Pikov Andropov piko...@gmail.com wrote: Third phase is checkout. Re: [libreoffice-users] Large fonts
Hi, In all versions of LO I've used, including 4.2.1.1 now, if you highlight the number in the box showing the font size, say for example 12, then type in the size, say 400, you want and press enter, it will change to that size. I use it where I want numbers or letters to be about 4 inches tall. I general change the page layout to landscape for numbers/letters that size. I've never had a problem. You don't get many on an 8.5 x 11' page. I'm running LO on Ubuntu 123.10 presently. Don On 02/21/2014 03:19 PM, retiredi...@juno.com wrote: Hi: I would like to print some things in font size 200.
