2014-06-10 Thread Renato Pontefice
Hi,
if i put a little .jlp image on any of my new file, the dimension
incredibly grow. (i.e. a file with no text, and one image of 15 KB became
800 K :-( )

I work on:
-win XP
- Libreoffice 4.1.6 (i'm downloading 4.2.4)

any Idea?

TIA

Re: [libreoffice-users] Macros [or perhaps not] in Libre Calc

2014-06-10 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
That might be a better route!

The database route might be better if the wide-eyed-end-users were going to
enter the data directly onto a computer such as a hand-held device or
tablet or something. Sadly LIbreOffice does not yet work on hand-held
devices but AndrOO does but i'm not sure if the Base component is included.
So the weeus might have to use a desktop machine for it.

I didn't quite follow Brian's instructions but that might be because i've
got a fever and only read it hastily. Writer does sound like a good module
to use. I'm guessing that each module would have different advantages.

I had a quick stab at doing this in Calc but just on a single worksheet to
try to take advantage of the auto-increment feature but it didn't work well
when there was a gap between the dates. Using multiple sheets didn't seem
likely to work either.

I also had a quick go at creating a copy of the file, renaming the
file-ending to zip and then editing the "contents.xml". It kinda worked
with minimal info on each page but i could imagine it become hideously
turgid with even a little more information on the pages.

Tom :)

Re: [libreoffice-users] problem adding image to .rtf file

2014-06-10 Thread Tom Davies
Hi )
Have you tried using the native Odf format instead?

The Rtf format is a Microsoft proprietary format that never seemed to
manage to achieve it's promises of interoperability.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rich_Text_Format#Criticism
Apparently it even led to MS losing a court-case! MS then started to
abandon the format and their newer format, OOXML, started to appear. OOXML
makes all the same promises, apparently with a similar level of lack of
success but with a bit more care taken to avoid being taken to court.

Throughout it's history Rtf has been plagued by malware issues although
lack of uptake has minimised the effects;

Re: [libreoffice-users] Can't get leading zeros in Calc

2014-06-10 Thread Oogie McGuire
> OK an update:

The original spreadsheet is an export of a .XLS file from a Foxbase database on
a Windows machine. Based on what I got I thought the data were stored as 4
digit numbers but in the database they are really 6 or more text characters.

I needed to get it into an SQLite Database on an Android tablet via LibreOffice
on a Macintosh. I do that by converting the .XLS to a .CSV file in LibreOffice.
Once I have a good .CSV file I create update statements for the SQLite database
by giving it the table name, primary key and update values. When I bring the
data in to LibreOffice it assumes they are numbers and then the various issues
with the leading zeros. I need the leading zeros because the linkages of a
record to another record in the database on the final update require the
leading zeros.

Once the data are in SQLite then that file is put on the Android tablet. Data
are added and modified via the Android system.

Then I need to take the data out of the Android, into the Mac. I just move the
entire SQLite Database to the Mac. Then I create an export file in .CSV format
from the SQLite Database via a customized Query. That file then goes to the
person with Windows machine. They run an import process on the file to bring in
the new records, link them as appropriate and then those incorporate the
changes into the Foxbase database.

On the Foxbase system the data are stored as text strings but because they are
all digits when it gets imported to LibreOffice they get interpreted as
numbers. That's why I couldn't get the adding back of the leading zeros to work
at all. And the transfers back and forth resulted in all the linkages being
broken.

The system is a sheep registration system talking to my own sheep management
system. The links are from a new lamb to its parents based on registration
number so it has to be correct.

What has finally worked is the following workflow:

Get .XLS file from the Windows computer. Get someone on a Windows machine to
save that file as a .CSV on the Windows machine.
When I do the import of the .CSV file into LibreOffice instead of allowing
Standard on the import set the required fields to be text.
That preserves the leading zeros that already exist in the file from the
Foxbase system.
Create my update statements for the SQLite Database per normal, run them, move
the database to the Android, collect the data as required and then move the
database back to the Mac.
Do the required Select statement that creates a table that I then export as
.CSV file
Open that in LibreOffice and verify the text strings are still text. Save it as
a .XLS file
Send that to the Windows machine. There it is used as input the the Foxbase
system.

I've tried it with one flock with 84 2014 lambs and it worked. Nor ready to
test with the next flock of 156 new lambs.

I think you need to take a closer look at the import process of a CSV
file into LibreOffice.

I do get a 'Text import' wizard, and if i select 'Quoted field as text',
and under field specify 'Text' for the desired columns (columns 2,3)

When i import this CSV file:
a;b;c
1;2;3
"0001";"0002";"0003"
0001;0002;0003

I do get this in LO (column separated given as semi-colon for
readability (notice the space to indicate wheter a value is left aligned
or right aligned:

a;b;c
 1;2 ;3 ;
0001 ;0002; 0003;
  1;0002 ;0003 ;

When i look at the returnvalues if the ISNUMBER() function for these
nine fields:

a;b;c
TRUE;FALSE;FALSE
FALSE;FALSE;FALSE
TRUE;FALSE;FALSE

Everything as expected.
- the values between '"' are all TEXT
- the columns (2 and 3)are also text.
- in text-values the leading zero's are maintained

So it looks like there are many ways of dodging the need for a macro and

2014-06-10 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Sorry you haven't had any responses earlier!

The error message appears to be a Windows one, from a quick google search
but i got responses for Macs too. Can you empty the wastebin on your
machine, go into your emailing system and empty the wastebin there too?
Rebooting your machine is often a good way of fixing most problems.

Is your hard-drive pretty full?

If it's Windows and it's not just a full hard-drive then it's quite
complicated to fix and might need to be taken to a computer repair shop

It is generally best to let people know what platform, or even be more
specific and let them/us know which Operating System. ie telling us you're
using Win7 is very informative but just telling us you are using Windows is
sometimes enough because the Windows version of LO is slightly different
from the version that runs on everything else.

You can usually find the version number of a program by going up to the
menu's and click on
Help - About
and that might give clues about which OS or just platform although it's not
always easy to work out. Sometimes you can copy&paste the text from those
things, but not always.  keyboard short-cuts are;
Ctrl c = copy
Ctrl v = paste

[libreoffice-users] Default printer issues in Writer

2014-06-10 Thread musik7
I have an issue with one of my end users where Writer is not defaulting to
the printer which is set as default in Windows. I have tried a number of
things including reinstalling LibreOffice and reinstalling the printer.
Initially, reinstalling the printer resolved the issue for about a day, but
then the issue showed up again, and reinstalling the printer didn’t fix it a
second time. If anyone has any other suggestions for possible solutions, I
would be grateful.

Thanks,

Andrew

A couple of thoughts...

Some printer information seems to be saved in the document. I find that
if the document is saved after printing, and the same printer is still
available next time you print it, that one is selected by default. If
the printer has been removed, or the document is opened on a different
system where that printer doesn't exist, it probably selects the system
default.

Some applications remember the last printer you used, and select it by
default regardless of the system default. I think Firefox does that.
Don't know if LibreOffice does.

Mark.

Greetings musik7!

It would help if you could tell us what OS you are running on the user's
system.

[libreoffice-users] Re: Default printer issues in Writer

2014-06-10 Thread musik7
Sorry about that, this system is Windows 7 Ultimate, 32 bit.

Mark- I sent the end user an email to have them test printing then saving to
see if that keeps the settings, so I will let you know if that helps or not.
I know that we have tried printing and closing/re-opening the files, and it
seemed to keep the printer settings for a few minutes then revert. I don't
believe we ever hit save before closing though, so hopefully that will help.

Thanks.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Default printer issues in Writer

2014-06-10 Thread Dave Liesse
Is the user printing via Ctrl-P (or the menu equivalent) or by clicking
on the shortcut icon? I've never seen the shortcut use anything other
than the Windows default printer, but the long way does revert to the
last printer chosen.

Also, in options>load/save there is a tick box "Load Printer settings
with the document".
