Hi Marc,

The point of the posts was to note that in fact it is easy enough to get
LO working on Yosemite but it requires a bit of messing about, some of
 which is counter-intuitive.

Yes, the basic setup is :

- install Apple Java 6
- then install Oracle JDK/JRE (currently 1.8.0_25)

When you next set your Java preferences in LO, it should automatically
detect the Oracle JDK/JRE (which are effectively located in different
positions to Apple's Java 6).

Hi Tom, all

That crash is highly likely to be a Java issue, of course. Switch off Java
and the text files stop crashing.

On Yosemite, the crash is a LO issue because LibreOffice comes bundled
with at least one extension that invokes a JVM via a JNI call, or
alternatively, any functionality that requires a JVM to be invoked e.g.
any of the remaining Java wizards, or Base functionality requiring JVM
instantiation.

However, the real underlying problem is that Oracle's Java 7 and Java 8
have a bug preventing them from initiating this JVM via JNI correctly,
and which is only slated to be fixed with the release of Java 9, so
ultimately this is Oracle's problem.

There is a bug report in the LibreOffice bug tracker which indicates
where the problems lie.

[libreoffice-users] Default Alignment for Inserted Images

2014-11-07 Thread CVAlkan
When I place the cursor at the beginning of a paragraph (left margin) in
Writer and insert a graphic, it always defaults to being center-aligned.
This isn't normally a big deal, but I need to put in a slew of these and
it's therefore become tedious.

Is there a way to change this default behavior so that Writer will always
insert the graphic as right-aligned? I've wandered through all the setup
menus I could think of, but can't find any such setting.

In a similar vein, is there a way to set these same defaults for tables,
frames, and the like?

Thanks.

Inserted graphics appear to inherit the Graphics paragraph style.
Select a graphic, open the Styles and Formatting window, right-click
the Graphics paragraph style, and select Modify... . At Type |
Position | Horizontal, select something such as Right to Page text
area. Future inserts will appear right-aligned.

I trust this helps.

Thanks Brian:

Once again, I'm kicking myself for not thinking of that before posting. As
usual, you've come to the rescue quickly and with a response that's right on
target.

As with most folks looking for answers here, seeing a response from you with
your famous catch-phrase I trust this helps is pretty much a guarantee of
a good answer.

Frank

For the forum in general:
From the shows on television this week, it seems to be music awards season
and, so far as I'm aware, Brian Barker doesn't have any albums or songs up
for a grammy, but does anyone else believe that he should be voted as the
most consistently knowledgeable and (even more importantly) helpful person
lurking on this forum?

[libreoffice-users] Add Dictionary Online

2014-11-07 Thread Brandon
Hello,

I would like to submit a large dictionary of medical terminology that has
already been compiled. It seems that I can only create a new dictionary on a
word-by-word basis on the user end, and there doesn't seem to be the option for
me to submit directly to the site that Writer links me to when I click get
more dictionaries online. Please help me install this thing. Thank you.

I don't believe that Brian Barker has ever addressed any help request

as the:

most consistently knowledgeable and (even more importantly) helpful person.
Whilst most others are simply deleted after minor perusal, I archive all
of his responses in a massive file that I can search when trouble
strikes, and the official documentation fails, as it so often does.

HI :)
+1
There are many other contributors whose answers are always of a similarly
high quality. I save answers from quite a few people here. Regina, for
example - but i'd be hard-pushed to name anyone as prolific over such a
long time-span as Brian.
Regards from
Tom :)

[libreoffice-users] outline numbering

2014-11-07 Thread Virgil Arrington
I've used LO and its predecessors for about 15 years now. I recently
noticed that the dialog boxes for outline numbering have changed. In the
past, under the position tab for outline numbering, the numbering
position was determined by settings such as width of numbering and
minimum space to text. Now the numbering position is determined by
settings such as numbering followed by and aligned at. This newer
dialog seems to follow the practice of MS Word and will, I think,
increase compatibility of LO .doc files.

But, now I have a mishmash in my documents. Older documents have the
older dialog boxes and newer documents have the newer, even though I
load them into the same instance of LO. I'd like to get all my documents
working the same, but I've seen no way of changing the outline numbering
in old documents to match the newer dialogs. I've played with some of
the compatibility settings under tools/options, but I've found
nothing that seems to have any effect.

Once a document has been created with outline numbering, is there a way
to make LO change the way it establishes the position of the numbering
(i.e., with numbering followed by a tab, rather than width of
numbering.) It seems to be an either/or with LO, and I can't figure out
how it decides which dialog option to give me.

It wasn't clear to me if you're trying to install a custom dictionary so
you can use it when you run Writer or if you're trying to submit a
dictionary to extensions.libreoffice.org (the site I'm taken to when I
click the Get more dictionaries online... link in
Tools-Options-Language Settings-Writing Aids).

For personal use, consider visiting
http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com/articles/build_scientific_names_dictionary_libreoffice
which describes how to make a dictionary for hunspell, LibreOffice's
spell checker, and how to get LibreOffice to see your new dictionary.

For adding a dictionary to extensions.libreoffice.org, I'd consider
reading the site's how-to documentation for contributing an extension to
the site, and then asking extensi...@otrs.documentfoundation.org if I
had questions. I haven't gone through the process of submitting an
LibreOffice extension there myself but I imagine part of that process
involves filling out the form at
http://extensions.libreoffice.org/@@hosting-your-extension so the site
moderators know what to expect from your contribution.

If you decide to share your medical terminology dictionary, thanks for
doing that. Such a dictionary sure sounds helpful.
