Is this only text? I assume there is embedded content of some sort or some kind
of fancy break going on. Is there a frame?

When I had a problem it was specifically with an ODT file, so I copied it to a
zip file, unzipped it and then I was able to look at the content to what sort
of funny things were going on in there. I think you can do the same with the
doc x file, but I surely have not tried that but I thought I'd heard that that
was possible.

You claim that you cannot provide the example file, but, how much can you

I once had a file that caused a crash and it was related to an image in a frame

Are you able to remove parts of the document and still reproduce the crash?

Is the document long and perhaps there might be a timeout?

Are you able to modify the text (like change every letter to an X)?

Hi Shiva Prasad,

Recently, some .docx files are failing to convert to .pdf.

Might be there are special formating in these *.docx, which aren't
available in OpenDocument format.
Something like this:
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=143311

Have a look at https://bugs.documentfoundation.org for special bugs with

Some facilities were apparently removed in
version 1909 of Windows 10. The best you can do
now is to start a search, whereupon the Search
tab will appear in the ribbon, including a "Date
modified" icon. If you click that, you will see a
limited set of date possibilities: Today, "This month", "Last year", etc.

I trust this helps.

To: users@global.libreoffice.org

Good evening
I am not sure whether this is a LibreOffice (?) problem or just MY
problem.

It happened before, but I will describe the latest episode.

I was working with Writer on a Word (.docx) file. As a translation job I
was supposed to overwrite that file.

[MsFt does not necessarily recognize LO; had you opened this in
LO or

MsFt? (docx is one of MsFt's files)]

Is there any requirement to use MS's .docx format instead of the more
compatible .doc format?

I do not do any translation between languages, but if you do not need
to use .docx for the translated file, then I would not do so.

To be honest, the .docx format have compatibility issues between MS's
Word versions. Last year, I finally convinced a MS Office user that
it would be better to use .doc over .docx for the files emailed out to
many users that have various versions of MS Office, and for me LO.

For me, I make all my word processing documents using .odt and then
save it in .doc format for the MS Word users.

The file contained images, tables and objects.
After being 2/3 finished, I saved the file, went downstairs and wanted
to continue working while having a coffee.
However, when I opened the file, saved in SpiderOakOne, I noticed, that
the latter 2/3 of the file were gone.

[yet another program?]

Including 1/2 day of work.
Even archived earlier versions of the same file showed only the first
1/3.

Trying to open that file with MS Word, resulted in the following error:
"File Format error at
SAXParse Exception:
[word/document.xml line 2]:
Attribute w:hAnsi redefined
Stream word/document.xml line 2, column 73305 (row,col)"

[suggestion: open LO - then attempt to open saved document,
allowing it

to translate if necessary;
hopefully, your file will re-appear.]

The file contained originally about 4300 Japanese characters.
Even though there was nothing on my screen beyond the first 1/3 of that
file, its size did not change.
When I deleted the second 2/3 of the original file, the original size of
470 kb shrank to 130 kb.
After I retyped all the lost work and saved that first as .ODT and then
later as .docx, file size was 23 and 16 kb respectively.

[these are MsFt not LO documents.]

A different translator translating the same file (probably using MS
Word) into a different language had apparently no problems.

What is happening here?
Does this mean Writer has problems handling MS Word files?
Is it the incomprehensible .docs format?

[that's a good word to describe MsFt ;-)]

Do I HAVE to use Word for such file? Something I really do not want
to do!

Is there anything to PREVENT this kind of event? (retyping my work all
the time will get me into real trouble!)

[suggestion: use LO to open documents ... work with documents ...
then

if necessary, save as MsFt to send to others
   - although if they too have LO, then no translation would be
necessary ;-)]

Thomas

I opened the .docx file with LO in the first place, upon saving accepted
the proposed (by LO) .docx format.

After the trouble occurred, I copied TEXT ONLY into Writer, finished work
there AND THEN saved first as .odt and then as .docx (same file)

Necessity for Word format: translation agencies send me those Word file ->
expect them to be "overwritten" ->
AND expect Word files back. Which will then be sold to the clients who
ordered the translations. (translation not of file formats, but of text:
manuals, books, letters etc.)
If I start mumbling "I use only odt format ...", they will probably stop
sending me work. Then I will starve to death ...

Does this mean Writer has problems handling MS Word files?
Is it the incomprehensible .docs format?

Do I HAVE to use Word for such file? Something I really do not want to do!
Is there anything to PREVENT this kind of event? (retyping my work all

Subject: [libreoffice-users] file format problem?
To: users@global.libreoffice.org

Good evening
I am not sure whether this is a LibreOffice (?) problem or just MY problem.
It happened before, but I will describe the latest episode.

I was working with Writer on a Word (.docx) file. As a translation job I
was supposed to overwrite that file.

[MsFt does not necessarily recognize LO; had you opened this in LO or
MsFt? (docx is one of MsFt's files)]

Even archived earlier versions of the same file showed only the first 1/3.
Trying to open that file with MS Word, resulted in the following error:
"File Format error at
SAXParse Exception:
[word/document.xml line 2]:
Attribute w:hAnsi redefined
Stream word/document.xml line 2, column 73305 (row,col)"

[suggestion: open LO - then attempt to open saved document, allowing it
to translate if necessary;
   hopefully, your file will re-appear.]

Hi!

Strange bug. I launch 5.1.1.3 on Windows (7x64)... For example LibreOffice
Write. It opens. I click on File->Exit LibreOffice ... NOTHING HAPPENS.

If I click on the red cross top right corner of the window, it properly

If I use the "Ctrl-Q" shortcut, it properly closes it.
Just the file->Exit LibreOffice menu doesn't.

Doesn't happen on Ubuntu Linux... here closing method works.

Do you get that behavior too?

Re: [libreoffice-users] File download stalls when connected to my ISP, succeeds when using a Verizon Wireless MIFI?

2015-09-07 Thread Tim---Kracked_P_P---webmaster

I am hoping the person will return my email and give me the info you
need - i.e. the location of the download so you can find out what mirror
was used. Since the country code was ".be", that should narrow the
mirror list a bit. I do not remember what country used that country
code, but I could look it up if I really wanted to know that answer.

I have seen some access providers have a limit on file sizes, but I was

I gave the German archive download for 5.0.1.2 for that person to try.

I have seen some access providers have a limit on file sizes, but I was
thinking that the file might have been corrupted during the download
process.

Hello,
I try to download LibreOffice_5.0.1, but I get following message:
The file "LibreOffice_5.0.1_Win_x86.msi" has been blocked. The file is
larger than the configured file size limit.

What can I do to be able to download this msi?

Thanks in advance.

It would be great to get the URL from which the download does not work. Thanks

Try the archive site folder system. If it works, then it really could
have been the regional mirror that has the problem.

try to download it from this "FTP like" listing with your browser.

http://downloadarchive.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/old/

If it works, then it may be in your service.

If it does or does not, then either way I would contact your service
provider and ask their support people why you are not able to download
from the different download access points properly.

Look into the different ways you can down the file[s].

Are you using IE, Firefox, or Chrome?
I use Time Warner Cable for my access, in central New York State, and
have no issues with the different download paths. EXE or MSI file
extensions work the same.

Seems the Send to Email is broken?

Hi :)
I think you have just zoomed out tooo far.

You can zoom in again either by;

1. the little slider on the status-bar bottom right
2. View menu, Zoom is at the bottom of the menu
3. Ctrl and mouse-wheel

In other programs, such as most web-browsers, you can also zoom in and out
using
4. Crtl + or Ctrl -
but then most programs don't have method 1, the slider.

Tom :)

I love LO, and the whole open source idea, but the product needs a
serious quality rethink if things like this can happen. I have had no
such issues on Linux, which just goes to show that the developers, as a
whole, give little heed to the changes they make in the code and the
effect it can have on other OSes (Windows, Mac) - as they would say,
how are we supposed to know whether change x or y will have an impact

because that is where the perceived markets are for the taking. This
leaves the little people like Joe Bloggs / Jane Doe, etc, here, to deal
with the issues on OSX, of which there are many, and too few developers
willing or interested to care about fixing them.

Had I stuck to MS Word (yes, I have Office 2011 for Mac), this would not
have happened, of that I am certain. Had I stuck to 4.1.x, this would
not have happened either, but no that is now obsolete...instead we have
a 4.2.5.x as stable with deficiencies like the one I encountered, and
as a businessman, I begin to seriously start questioning the
benefit/risk assessment of the whole LO thing.

This is just a word of warning to others, as they say your mileage may

Re-read my message and you will see that I was working from a USB

automatic backup with rollback to an external media that works
seamlessly on 3 different OSes (TimeMachine on OSX, Windows autosystem

Even with different versions of Office, I've never had complete garbage

If the file does have any confidential information you can post it on
Nabble and post a link on the user page. Please do not post confidential

Do you have a specific error message? Also, please advise the LO version

[libreoffice-users] file-endings

2013-11-19 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Just downloaded some interesting files from a 'professional' company
involved in communications. no-one else can open their files but
thanks to a little wisdom i learned from this mailing list years ago i
was.

Their files end either in .zip or fail to have any file-endings. I
changed them to .odt and then a double-click opened them. My guess is
that they will try to blame Libreoffice/OpenOffice so if any runs a
blog or anything then it might be neat to get the truth out there in
advance of the FUD for once. If you want verification then i can let
you know who they are off-list but ideally i want to avoid making
their name too public over this mess as they are basically a force for
good in the world even if they stuffed-up this time.

[libreoffice-users] File that crash LibreOffice Impress

2013-05-29 Thread Gabriel Risterucci
Hi,

I'm using LibreOffice 4.0.3.3 on Windows, and have a file that will crash
Impress.

When I open the file, either by double-clicking it in the windows file
explorer or with the File-Open menu in LibreOffice, a window open, I can
see the loading bar on the bottom and it close.

It doesn't kill LibreOffice (if I have other document open they stay open)
and if I close everything and restart LibreOffice, there is no document
recovery window. Also, there is no error message or anything.

The document itself is very simple, less than 10 pages, a few clipart and
text; no effect, transition, animation or anything else really.

It open fine with LibreOffice 3, so I could work around this, but I believe
it's a rather bad bug. If a developer want to see the file, I can send it
privately (it's not really confidential, but I'd rather not make it
available publicly). Just let me know.

Re: [libreoffice-users] File associations for MSO to LibreOffice -- Win8

2013-04-01 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
The easiest way is to just dragdrop the file onto the LibreOffice icon.

Yes, it is best set during the install process but it is also possible many
other ways.  I know of 2 in Xp, not sure how that translates to Win8.

1.  Rerun the installer.  It asks if you would rather Repair or Modify
LibreOffice instead.  Either of those options soon gives you the screen where
you set whether LibreOffice is the default app for read Word, Excel and
Powerpoint (err and Visio).  Just tick all 4 boxes and then Next.  I
often miss that screen so i would have to rerun the installer again (or hit the
back button).

2.  As Tanstaafl says but with a twist.  There is often a tick-box at the
bottom of the selections window.  Tick it if it says something like Always use
this program to open this file-type.  It is a bit painful though because there
are quite a few different types called doc and docX that would all normally
open in Word and some of them are extremely rare.  Sadly until you have opened
a lot of MS files in LibreOffice this method wont work even without the twist
because Windows tries to hide the fact that LibreOffice is installed.

3.  Open a folder, any folder, at the top of the window choose the Tools
menu, choose the Folder Options and in the pop-up click on the File Types.
Wait half an hour for it to list all the 'different' types and then click on
the grey header at the top that says File Types (top marks for originality
(NOT)) to sort the list into human-readable and then scroll down to all the
appropriate types.  Again it is 1 type at a time.  Click on the type, click on
the button Change and hope to see LibreOffice in there.

The 2nd way also works on Ubuntu except that from the right-click menu you
would go down to Properties at the bottom instead of Open with and then find
the right tab and select the right radio-button.

As Tanstaafl says, it is best to set at install (or reinstall-modify/repair)
Regards from
Tom :)

RE: [libreoffice-users] File associations for MSO to LibreOffice -- Win8

2013-04-01 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
1. Find a file that has the association to be changed, using Windows Explorer
(from the Windows 8 Desktop).

2. Right click on the file entry.

3. Select Open With ...

4. On the dialog that offers some selections of prospective alternatives, do
not choose one. Instead, select Choose default program It will show
the current default and some alternatives. If LibreOffice (Writer, Calc,
Impress) is in the list, choose the appropriate one. Otherwise, use the More
Options case to see additional selections.

5. Note that, even when the default is changed, this technique can also be used
(with the default check-box cleared) for occassional selection of a different
program. Windows notices this and will move the selections that have been used
up to the top for direct selection at the Open With ... option.

RE: [libreoffice-users] File associations for MSO to LibreOffice -- Win8

2013-04-01 Thread Pasqual Milvaques
An interesting way for doing this is using the assoc command:
http://ss64.com/nt/assoc.html

If you want to change associations for a large number of machines in an
enterprise environment is advisable to build a bat with assoc commands and
deploy it with gpo's (for example)

For few machines the other methods are better, of course

Regards

Dennis E. Hamilton dennis.hamil...@acm.org ha escrit:

5. Note that, even when the default is changed, this technique can also be
used (with the default check-box cleared) for occassional selection of a
different program. Windows notices this and will move the selections that
have been used up to the top for direct selection at the Open With ...
option.

Many thanks for the help.

[libreoffice-users] File name curtailed

2012-09-24 Thread Steve Edmonds

Hi.
I've noticed what seems to be a bug that has crept in somewhere where LO
curtails file names. Present in 3.5 line but we are not up to the 3.6
line yet so cannot test. I wonder if someone with 3.6 could check before
I file a bug.
We have been creating a series of documents, first ones are .sxw so its
been a long time, where the file name is something like
FILE.1234.howToCook.odt
In the 3.5 line if you use the pdf button or save as the file name is
curtailed and it needs retyping to save. LO seems to search from the
left for the first '.' then chopping to the right instead of searching
from the right.
To test, create a new document, save as FILE.1234.howToCook.odt and then
press the PDF button or do a save as.

Thanks, Steve

Are you, by any chance, using KDE?
If so, then this is https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=52546, fixed
in 3.6.1.

If not, then some more information about your environment might help.

Re: [libreoffice-users] file name suggestion

2012-09-06 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
I think the op was talking about the default name.  Of course the person saving
the document can change from the default to something more sensible.

The default used by LO at the moment is very old-school.  Files called things
like Doc1, Doc2, Doc3 are even less helpful than picking the 1st 2 words.  If
it could be cleverer and choose the 1st 2 words of the first main heading that
might be more useful.  Perhaps there might be some way using the contents of
the Navigator?  Perhaps more than 2 words, such as using the entire 1st main
title?  Perhaps adding the date in -mm-dd order to the end?

Tom :)

no...  in case a documents starts like  'the teacher says...'  or  'dear john',
when you save it for the first time you find the words 'the teacher' or 'dear
john'  (or 'the teacher 2' or 'dear john 2' in case the file name would be
already in use) instead of  'document without name'.  then:  if you like it or
are in a hurry, you simply click 'save' without changing the file name,
otherwise you change the file name and then click 'save'.  I sometimes think of
it when I write quick notes or letters...  nobody would make file names
obligatory, obvious.

[libreoffice-users] File associations - LibreOffice and OpenOffice on Windows 7

2012-05-21 Thread James Knott
I previously installed OpenOffice on my computer and recently
LibreOffice. I have also installed the various free Microsoft viewers.
One thing I've noticed is that I can't have both LO and OO associated
with the various file types. Please note that I'm just talking about
association, not default association, so that when I right click on a
file I can chose from among LO, OO or the Microsoft viewer. At the
moment, my choices are just LO and the viewer. If I want to use
OpenOffice, I have to open the app first and then the file.

Any way around this?

RE: [libreoffice-users] File associations - LibreOffice and OpenOffice on Windows 7

2012-05-21 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
Here's the tip that I provided over on ooo-users. My system is busy right now
so I can't check to see how well it works with AOO 3.4.0 also:

You can try to add AOO associations manually, but it might not be effective.

The problem is that LibreOffice, OpenOffice.org, and Apache OpenOffice all use
the same (old Star Office) names for the individual application programs. Even
if you succeed in having multiple swriter.exe associations, for example, you
may have trouble telling them apart [;).

I think you already know how to do this, by using the Open With ...
context-menu and take the Choose Default Program option. You'll have to find
the installed files and select them. Perhaps even make it the default at
first, although you can select the program and remove the check mark on Always
use the selected program ... .

Thereafter, they should all be offered in the Open With ... without having to
be added. But I suspect this is where you might be frustrated. (This is how I
add WinZip to all of the ODF and OOXML extension names so I can simplify
document-forensic work.)

 - Dennis

PS: I just got this working for .odds on a Vista configuration that has
OpenOffice 3.3.0, Symphony 3.0.1, and LibreOffice 3.4.3 installed.

PPS: Installing Apache OpenOffice 3.4.0 seems to steal the default file
associations, no matter who has them. Because of that I tend not to keep it
around on any configurations where I want to use other ODF-supporting programs.
(When uninstalled, AOO 3.4.0 leaves no associations behind.) I haven't tried
the above procedure to get the other associations back. That's out of pique.
Let me know if it works for you.

Re: [libreoffice-users] File could not be written?

2012-02-22 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Try changing the name of the file slightly?  I tend to add v1 to the end of a
file-name and gradually step that up; v2, v3 and so on.  Every so often if i am
reasonably sure i wont need earlier versions i delete a load of them and take
the v number off the end.

Does your disk think it's full?  Are you trying to save to a protected folder
or one that you don't have permissions to save to?  Can you save a
non-LibreOffice file in the same folder?

Tom :)

Tom,
Might want to uncheck them if you edit, write, and save in .doc filetype, as
another lister noted a bug affecting .doc files and so unchecks these boxes,
himself. It was a bit quicker to recreate and I both missed things while
getting other things better. Thanks!

Hi :)
If you are not able to search the bugs area at the moment (through inexperience
or lack of time) then it is better to just post the bug report yourself and let
triagers gain more experience at searching for and linking similar bug-reports.

If it isn't already posted then you will have done a hugely positive thing in
drawing attention to the problem.

Hi :)
Thanks :) Since MS Office is the dominant Office on those machines i thought i
would leave the LibreOffice saving to ODFs. That way one advantage of using LO
is easy access to that format. I should check that ODFs don't try to open in
MS
Office because that would be a little bit irritating. Right tool for the right
job is best.
Thanks and regards from

[libreoffice-users] file recovery

2011-06-30 Thread John Thaden
New user here, of LibreOffice, trying to recover a document open in Writer when
a Microsoft update auto-rebooted my computer. Reopening Writer, I followed
instructions on a recovery Wizard. An error message flashed on and then a
document appeared, but a very old version of the document. Did I lose the
newer version that was up on my desktop for hours? Doesn't Writer autosave by
default? Should I start trying to recreate it from my head?

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=34805
I have turned auto recovery and backup off now and just regularly
remember to save because I know I can't rely on it.

Ah thanks for letting me know.
Stupid me - I only searched for 'auto recovery' and 'auto save'. Apologies!

[libreoffice-users] File saving integrity

2011-03-21 Thread Steve Edmonds

Hi.
I was following the discussion on sharepoint.
I am developing some guidelines for our users for use of LO to minimise
loss of data.

How does LO handle and store files across networks, what happens if the
network goes out partway during a save.

When the file is opened is the whole file cached locally for editing
Is the file saved as file.odt.part and mv file.odt at the end or is the
file held open and written by block.
What happens with a time save backup, is that local or remote (although
no good for .docs as it doesn't work)

I am presently apprehensive about editing a file across the internet
that may sit open, especially a largish file and tend to recommend.

Opening files on the local server for editing and saving is ok.
Files to be edited from a server remote across the internet should be
copied to your local HD, edited and copied back across the internet.

Does the sharepoint extension being discussed address these issues and
would it be applicable to any Webdav server. (I have no intention to
connect to a sharepoint server but could be interested in a webdav situation

Cheers,
steve

[libreoffice-users] File associations -- another try

2011-01-21 Thread Seth Williamson
Can somebody tell me how to get file associations working in LibreOffice in
Mac OS X? I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.6 on my Macbook Pro, and I've got
the latest release candidate for LibreOffice.

I can't get documents with an .odt extension automatically to start up
Writer. This is the behavior I was used to with Open Office and NeoOffice.

This is my first experience with LibreOffice. If somebody could help me
with this, I'd appreciate it.

This setting has nothing to do with L0, itself, really.
You configure this in your Mac OS system:
