Re: [libreoffice-users] Bug in Calc?

2012-01-17 Thread D & L Koch
Just a follow-up on my question a week ago about a possible bug in Calc,
specifically for Tom Davies and Cor Nouws who had offered suggestions.
The spreadsheet in question was not very large, so one night when I
couldn't sleep I re-did the spreadsheet in L.O. (the original was done
in OOo). I am now able to insert a new sheet without causing a crash of
L.O. I think the problem was in one of my charts, though I'm not
certain, as all chart references referred only to the material on the
individual sheets. I also don't know why I could add sheets in OOo
without a crash there. Anyway, I'm not going to report it as a bug as
it is probably something sloppy I did in making a chart. Thanks for
your suggestions, etc.

Cor, thanks for your response. I did attempt to isolate the problem as
you describe, but I do not get consistent results.

Incidentally I came across that bug yesterday (or the day before, do not
remember).

I guess this is the bug
  https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=41054
not crashing for most, just not able to save.
It's on some of the older files.

See if the fix can be pushed to 3.4.6 too ...

Cor, thanks for your response. I did attempt to isolate the problem as
you describe, but I do not get consistent results. For example, in some
cases I was able to save the file with most of the elements in the new
sheet, yet when I tried it yesterday I tried to save the file after
adding the new sheet but with nothing in it. It crashed again. Also, I
should add that none of the formulae, charts, etc., refer to anything on
another sheet -- all self-contained. Also, I didn't want to post a bug
report immediately until I've eliminated operator error, which
frequently occurs.

(Sorry for the delay in responding. I had surgery yesterday and wasn't
up to doing much experimenting.)

Interesting situation, that I've not been able to reproduce on Ubuntu
(3.4.4) nor in Win7 on my VM (3.4.3).

Would it be possible for you to cut down in file / formulea etc. to see
if there is a specific element that makes this crash happen?
I'm sure the devs would really appreciate that, cause then they can fix
the bug.
Or maybe it is possible for you to share a file that crashes, so that
others can test?

Tom,
Thanks for the response. I checked out the link you sent and tried
replacing the user profile with a new one, but as soon as I created a
new sheet (with nothing on it) L.O. crashed. So I'll keep looking.

Hi :)
Can you create a fresh new spreadsheet and then have a copy of the old one open
to move the existing worksheets into the new one?  Do the c/fwd and b/fwd
figures still work?

Note that moving the sheets removes them from the old spreadsheet/workbook file
so it's best to work from a copy of the old file just in case you save the file
at a wrong moment.

Tom :)

I don't know about LibreOffice, since I started to use it quite
recently, but OpenOffice.org sometimes crash for no obvious reason.
Sometimes even when it is running in the background doing nothing.
Suddenly I find that I no longer have any OpenOffice.org windows on any

I have Ubuntu 10.10, OpenOffice.org 3.3.0 and LibreOffice 3.3.2. Both
the office suites are installed by running those ”debs” from a terminal,
so I don't use the extremely buggy Ubuntu version of OpenOffice.org.
