Glad to hear you got it working.

For importing your data, you might check the mysqlimport command.  I 
used it a long time ago when I needed to get data from some MS Access 
files.  In Access, I was able to save the data as a CSV file and then 
import the CSV file into my MySQL database tables.  Here are two scripts 
I used to perform that task:
This one I called msqnewimport which deletes any data in the table 
before loading the CSV file


   #!/bin/sh
   # Import a ".csv" data file into a mysql table of the same name.
   # Original database data is deleted first. This creates new data.
   # Usage: msqnewimport  <.csv>
   #
   mysqlimport --local --delete --fields-terminated-by=,
   --fields-enclosed-by='"' --lines-terminated-by='\r\n' \
   -p -u  $1 $2

This one I called msqimport and it appends the CSV file data to the 
existing data in the table.


   #!/bin/sh
   # Import a ".csv" data file into a mysql table of the same name.
   # Original database data is preserved.The new data is appended.
   # Usage: msqimport  <.csv>
   #
   mysqlimport --local --fields-terminated-by=,

Replace  with your MySQL user name.
For more information on mysqlimport, see the manpage.

You may be interested in the MySQL database backup process as well.  
MySQL has a program, mysqldump, that writes an SQL file which can be 
used to restore a database later.For example:


   mysqldump --user=root -p --opt  > .sql

To restore, use:

   mysql --user=root -p  < .sql

Note the "<" and ">" redirection characters.  These programs use stdio 
for output and input, respectively.


It has been my experience that recreating forms and reports is a time 
consuming problem when changing database clients.  I am very reluctant 
to change a database client for this very reason.  It has also been my 
experience that for reports, Base's Oracle Report Builder (ORB) is 
problematic.  For small tables, ORB works fairly well and generates 
reports at a reasonable speed.  For large tables, however, it bogs 
down.  I have a table with over 5000 records and still growing.  My 
latest try with this table and LO 3.5.7/ORB 1.2.1 generated over 500 
writer pages.  That bogged ORB down, although it is working better with 
LO 3.5.7 than LO 3.5.3.  3.5.3 was so slow as to be unusable.  I have 
even tried a 3rd party report builder called DataVision, which has its 
own set of problems, is immature, and seemingly no longer active (last 
release was in 2008).  There are also proprietary (and not free) report 
builders out there that are reported to be mature and work fine. (No pun 
intended).

Hi :)
I think quite a few of us owe a huge thanks to Dan for being a total star.  
Certainly i do.  Chapter 3 is larger than 3 chapters of most other guides and 
it's even larger than the current iteration of one entire guide!  (Although i 
think the Maths Guide might grow a bit for the 3.7.x).  Also Dan seems to have 
fixed Chapter 2 of the Base Guide.  

There are a few people working on a Base Handbook, translating it from the 
German.  A couple of people translated the French Faq's Base section into 
English.  But all that is quite a lot different from researching and writing a 
hefty guide from scratch!  

So, top marks to Dan from me, if that counts for anything (sadly it doesn't).  
Please can people who do know about Base try reading the 2nd and 3rd chapters?  
That might help the docs team get it through the proof-reading stage.  Also it 
would be interesting to hear from people who know nothing about database 
programs to hear if it helped or made sense.  

Of course there are different possible approaches for writing a guide and this 
isn't a good time to try to steer the guide in a different direction.  Between 
the handbook, the Faq and the guide most people will hopefully be able to find 
a way into understanding Base even if they haven't been aware of using database 
programs before.

is real easy to load into MySQL.
You can use the command line MySQL command or if you install webmin 
it makes database admin easy.

Hello Pertti,
Just for "kicks": I used to personally know some of the "old" IBMers who
actually "invented" SQL, in particular DB2. That's a long time ago though...
I have LO running on Linux-Debian, Linux-Mint, and Windows/Vista (32 Bit).
The MySQL server runs on Linux, the clients run on all of these systems
(locally and LAN- or broadband-Internet-attached).
As I mentioned before, I have taken to using the native MySQL connector
preferably. It is faster and in my view somewhat less "buggy". Besides,
I keep reading in the mail lists that LO intends to "minimise" the
dependence on Java. The native connector comes included in the Windows-LO
version as far as I remember. So all you have to do is define your connection
for it (connect to a MySQL-database and then specify that you want to use the
native connector (the other possibilities on the respective dialog box being
JDBC or ODBC)).
The LO-Base definitions on the client side are basically the same as for the
Linux-version. I used to run the MySQL server also on Windows but have not done
so for a long time. If I remember correctly, my.cnf is called my.ini (or maybe
mysql.ini) in "true" Windows fashion. Again, the definitions in that file
should not be THAT different from the Linux situation (except - maybe -
the stuff concerning sockets/pipes).

The way I extracted my data was to right-click on each table and copy, and
then open a new spreadsheet and paste. Once in the spreadsheet you can then
save as CSV for easy importing into MYSQL.

Noted on your comments!! Unfortunately I'm running PCLinuxOS here and 
NOT Windows!! (I'm sure you will be told to move by someone!!). So I 
don't think it's any use me sending you the steps I went through. I did 
however have the same situation here and over the past 8 months or so 
this was the fourth attempt at getting it working.


In the past I gave up after several days of "thrashing" about and went 
back to Base/HSQL until it crashed on me again and so on and so on


This time I decided to hold out and work it through to the very end!! 
There were many things to learn and lots of Hoops to jump through but we 
got there in the end thanks to the aforementioned Members of the Forum 
(thanks again Guys!!)


I'm sure somebody WILL pop up and try and help you out - just stay with 
it, one step at a time, and you'll get there in the end.


VERY early days here but so far it looks good and I have a good feeling 
about Base/MySQL. I'm stuck at the moment though trying to extract my 
data from the old DB!!! Whatever I try it just crashes on me. 
(Grrr).


The saga continues and I will be VERY glad to be shot of Base/HSQL!!!

It has been very interesting to follow this discussion getting Base 
working with MySQL.

Unfortunately -- if I got it right - is Ian's OS a Linux (Ubuntu?)

Would it be possible to get the same proceeding described as a 
step-by-step instruction for Windows7 (64bit)?

Since Andreas Säger (one of LibO db-experts) last winter and spring 
repeatedly pointed out that LibO/Base is not to be considered as a 
stand-alone database program I have several times tried to create the 
connection LibO/Base to SQLite and to MySQL (I prefer SQLite as lighter 
than MySQL), but without success.


I am sure that such an instruction could increase the acceptance and 
usability of LibO and

I am sure that we are many that would be happy.

If you can get your data out of the old database as a csv file it is 
real easy to load into MySQL.
You can use the command line MySQL command or if you install webmin it 
makes database admin easy.

Under edit -> database -> Properties -> "Advanced Properties", you can
set up the database name and authentication:

(Build ID: da8c1e6), and phpMyAdmin 3.5.2.


   "Name of the MySQL database" is the name of the database you used
in the CREATE DATABASE mysql statement. *YES*
   "User name" is the user name you used in the GRANT statement - *IT IS*
   "Password required" should be checked if you set up a password in
the GRANT statement. - *IT IS*


But 'Test Connection' still gives me the "Communication Failure"!!


This sounds like Base still can't talk to the server through localhost.

This is REALLY getting to be a total PITA - This is the 4th time I've
tried to get this to work in the past 8 months or so. I really DON'T
understand why it has to be such an involved and impossible way to do
something!!!??

But I DO thank you Girvin (and others) who have been trying to help me.


Installing MySQL and getting Base working with it is not trivial, as
you have seen.  As far as I know, there is no one document to describe
the process.  Now add in all the other database server systems out
there that Base can connect to and it really expands.  That is why I
keep notes on what my process is for the time I upgrade my Linux and
have to do it all over again.


I also started a "Linux Set-up Document" when I started with the OpSys.
I think the first one was one or one and half pages. 4 years on it is
now over 20 pages of notes, methods, tips and tricks!! And *IF* I get
this to work that will add a few more pages!!!

It sounds like you are getting close, but there is still something 
blocking your access to the MySQL server (mysqld).  All of these 
symptoms sure sound like the server is not looking at the localhost port.

I am not familiar with your "Shorewall" system. I doubt this is 
related.  There are many distributions of Linux and each one has its own 
way of configuring the processes.  What I described is from Slackware 
Linux.  Your's must be different, but I included the Slackware files in 
case they may point you in a good direction.

Here are some things to try:

  1. Look at "/etc/my.cfg", the mysqld configuration file.  The mysqld
 server reads this file for configuration information when it boots
 up.  If there is a "skip-networking" entry in there, comment it
 out with a "#" in column 1.  Then restart mysqld or reboot.  If
 you can't find the my.cfg file in /etc, then search for it
 elsewhere on your system.

  2. ping localhost
 You should get responses.  (Ctrl-c will stop ping.)  If you get
 something like "destination unreachable" or "unknown host", then
 localhost is not configured on your system.  That could hang up
 Base.  Linux installation should do this for you, but maybe your
 distro does not.  If it isn't there, you could add it to "/etc/hosts":

 127.0.0.1   localhost

 Your system may need a reboot.  You could try pinging localhost
 again after you add it to /etc/hosts to determine if you need to
 reboot.

You can set up the connection host and port in edit -> database -> 
Properties -> Additional Settings.


   Host name should be localhost.

If you made any changes from the above suggestions, can you now go 
through the Base database installation again without any problems?
Carried on with the Base page and put in all the details - 'Test 
Class' gives me "Succesful"

a permission error if not root.  There should at least be entries in the

After running this sequence, the /var/lib/mysql directory should contain

Since these are sensitive files, only root can see/access them. 

I know this is a lot to take in, but not being at your system means I 
have to throw out a lot of possibilities and suggestions.

After opening MyAdmin and importing my 'empty' Table I find that Base 
now allowed me to go right through the connection process and asks me 
where I want to store the DB.


*BUT* When I go there and select it it opens and asks me for password 
and after that gives me the "Communication Failure" again.

I had decided last night that I would completely remove phpMyAdmin today 
and try again and then your valuable info came into me this morning so I 
thought - This *IS* the way to go!!

 "mysql_secure_installation" to set the root password, remove the
 "test" database, and remove network root access. This program will
 prompt for these items.  Note that removing network root access

This all worked fine and I entered and got back 'OKs" for all the GRANT 
and CREATE commands.



Assuming LO Base is already setup, in Base drill down as:

   Edit -> Database -> Connection Type  -> Next -> Test Connection
   (enter your password when asked)

   You should get the message: "...connection was established 
successfully"


Started Base and selected my old DB to get to the Edit screen - BUT when 
I go there "Connection Type" is grayed out!!
Tried again selecting the new SQL DB but again the "Connection Type" is 
grayed out!!


Carried on with the Base page and put in all the details - 'Test Class' 
gives me "Succesful"

But 'Test Connection' still gives me the "Communication Failure"!!

You might also check the MySQL error log in 
"/var/lib/mysql/.err".  You might find something useful there.
Also, verify "/var/lib/mysql" has owner and group settings of 
"mysql:mysql"


The var/lib/mysql Folder is there but is EMPTY(??)! (and has no 
permissions) and I can not delete it.


So we come to a grinding halt yet again!!??

In case it will help, here are the commands I use to configure MySQL and 
create my databases:


   *

These installation & setup instructions are in the MySQL Reference 
Manual on the MySQL website or in the documentation directory of your 
computer (should be installed when MySQL is installed).


You should then do the following tests:
Assuming LO Base is already setup, in Base drill down as:

   Edit -> Database -> Connection Type  -> Next -> Test Connection
   (enter your password when asked)

   You should get the message: "...connection was established successfully"

Then continue:

   OK -> Next -> Test Class

   You should get the message: "JDBC driver loaded successfully"
   (This assumes you are using JDBC)

If either of these tests do not work, then there is still something 
wrong in your configuration.
If the first test fails, then the problem may be the --skip-networking 
issue.
If the first test is okay but the second test fails, then it is most 
likely your JDBC driver configuration.


You might also check the MySQL error log in 
"/var/lib/mysql/.err".  You might find something useful there.
Also, verify "/var/lib/mysql" has owner and group settings of 
"mysql:mysql", although if you can access your database with the mysql 
or myadmin program, this is probably okay.  If you used 
mysql_secure_installation, then this should have been set up properly by 
mysql_secure_installation.  You can start fresh with this by renaming or 
deleting the "/var/lib/mysql" directory.


Of course, all of this assumes you have root access on your computer.  
Note that MySQL root is different from system root, and they _should_ 
_not_ share passwords!

I started MyAdmin and found that the user 'Ianw' was no longer there - 
so I gave 'Any User' full privileges. This made no difference to my problem.


So then I went back to MyAdmin and created a New User 'Ianw' and give 
him full privileges and selected all Schemas.


Back to Base - still get 'Communications Failure'. Tried again this time 
selecting 'Password Needed' and this time it asked me for my Password 
but after that came back with the 'Communications Failure'


Any more ideas (I don't have much hair left!!!)

 I see you created a user name 'lanw' in My Admin. That is a good 
start. You also have to use My Admin to define what schema 'lanw' can 
access. Then you need to define what privileges 'lanw' should have for 
the databases in those schema.
 I can not be very specific because I no longer use MySQL 5.1. When 
I updated my Ubuntu OS, it installed MySQL 5.6. But I do know from 
personal experience that you can not access a database using a user name 
until you have entered what Schema it can access and what privileges it 
has for specific databases within the schema for which it has access.

and it seems to be - Use Base or go and learn PHP or Ruby or something 
like that!!

But I think we must have different versions of LO. Your 'Step 1' is OK 
for the first part, (and it's what I did before), but the second part 
here only gives me the options...


   o Connect using ODBC
   o Connect using JDBC

   So knowing the JDBC does not work I tried ODBC but that gives me

   /Could not load the program library libodoc.so.1 or it is corrupted.
   The ODBC data source selection is not available./

   A search on my Hard Drive for 'libodoc' finds nothing and also
   Synaptic does not find it. I than looked under the Extension
   Manager in LO and found the 'Native Connector' written by my
   friend Alex Thurgood, (who seems to have vanished off eMail at
   the moment!!). But I see it is only a Pre-release for Ubuntu and
   I'm running PCLinuxOs - so will it work on my machine and if so
   do I just download it or what?

To be honest - I am somewhat confused regarding the issue of "where is the
native connector"! It might be that going to extensions and then 
download/installing
the native connector (for OpenOffice) does the trick. On the other hand, I think
that it should come automatically with the newest versions of LO. The definition
of a natively connected MySQL database goes as follows:
- (1) connect to an existing database, then select "MySQL" from the drop-down
  list (JDBC is shown as the first item in that list! MySQL is third from
  bottom in my case)
- (2) on the next dialog box select "direct connection" (direkte Verbindung in
  German)
- (3) on the next dialog box specify the database name, server name, IP-address
  or localhost (127.0.0.1) and port (usually 3306) or else the socket file
  (possible in case of a local server)
- (4) then specify the username and whether a password has to be given on
  connection
- (5) then store the odb-file.

So where is the "native" connector file?
Database name IS as specified in MySQL and is as saved - but I added the
path as well (?)
The connector comes up automatically when you "register" it in Base.

the best choice of all the possible connectors (Native, ODBC, JDBC).
In any case, reading through your steps - I think that

- did you specify the correct path for the jdbc-connector?

contains connector-j.pdf document with description in subdirectory docs.
The class name is *com.mysql.jdbc.Driver* for version 5.1.6."/

But there are NO pdf files in the Folder!!

Can anyone confirm that my steps are correct and give me details on how
to cure the error please?
