Hallo Leute, auf Quotings verzichte ich jetzt mal bewusst... Ich bin bislang ein stiller Mitleser gewesen. Dafür, dass das eine öffentliche Mailingliste ist, wird hier ein ganz schön ordinärer Tonfall angeschlagen, der wie ich finde, nicht gerade für ein gutes Klima sorgt ;-) Aber das hier zu lesen? Nein! Ich bin dann weg aus dieser Liste. Hoffentlich machen das dann andere auch so, bis diese dann bedauerlicherweise irgendwann ausstirbt. Nur weil sich Leute nicht an die Nettiquette halten können... I'm not seeing anything in the access log file except the reference to the 500 error Running a php cli on the php file does not return any errors Check the error log. Sounds like a permissions issue. Check the owner of the file. And recursive permissions. Are directories all 0755? i'm using cPanel Unless you a web host, IMHO, cPanel doesn't make admin easier. I will mod fstab and reboot one server at a time... I thought there was a way of dropping atime in real time without a reboot so you can test performance differences without rebooting but I could be mistaken. Might want to check out using relatime but I have no experience with that. [users@httpd] Files and DirectoryIndex conflict?
I'm having a problem using the Files directive to require authentication
on the index.html file. It doesn't work if it is requested with the
index URL but does if the URL specifies the file directly. I can't
believe that I'm the only person ever to try to do this but maybe I am.
So if I request http://localhost/ I get the following error and NO user
name/password dialog.
401 Authorization Required
Authorization Required
This server could not verify that you are authorized to access the
document requested. Either you supplied the wrong credentials (e.g., bad
password), or your browser doesn't understand how to supply the
credentials required.
But if I request http://localhost/index.html I get the Authentication
Required dialog and can enter the user name and password and then
receive the file.
I've tested this with FireFox and Chrome. I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 and
apache 2.2.16.

Why would I make it up. There is nothing in the error log. 401 errors

It writes to the error log file that I am looking at. I can request a

Isn't the whole purpose of DirectoryIndex to serve up one of the above
files if you request the index? So why doesn't the Files directive work
