Re: [users@httpd] 443 VirtualHost setup yields "Server should be SSL-aware" error

SSLCertificateFile "/example.crt"
SSLCertificateKeyFile "example.key"
SSLCertificateChainFile "example-intermediate.crt"

The above results in the following error when trying to start:
[Tue Aug 04 11:20:09 2015] [error] Server should be SSL-aware but has
no certificate configured [Hint: SSLCertificateFile] ((null):0)

We know that certificate listed works as we are currently using it,
only difference is we tried including it in a VirtualHost now.

The leading slash before example.crt makes the httpd think it's an
absolute file location, so it is looking in the root of your filesystem
for a file called example.crt. It's probably next to your example.key
file so removing the leading slash should resolve this issue.

[users@httpd] mod_fcgid tmp dir issue

2015-06-09 Thread 5 Diamond Info
When using Sugar CRM under mod-fcgid, we encounter a problem after a few days
of running. The error logged by httpd is:

[Tue Jun 09 09:32:33.423239 2015] [fcgid:warn] [pid 5202:tid 140367450076928]
(20014)Internal error: [client 75.147.140.126:5] mod_fcgid: can't get tmp
dir, referer:
http://crm.ourdomain.com/index.php?module=Accounts&action=DetailView&record=7c77ce81-a854-7b8e-65d0-52fd384deacq

So, when this occurs, it keeps occurring forever until we restart httpd. It
will then work for 2-5 days, and, then happen again. Once it starts happening,
all users are affected, same mod_fcgid process or not. Only a restart of httpd
seems to matter to clear it.

This appears to be triggered in the mod_fcgid code:

  641 rv = apr_temp_dir_get(&tempdir, r->pool);
  642 if (rv != APR_SUCCESS) {
  643 ap_log_rerror(APLOG_MARK, APLOG_WARNING, rv, r,
  644   "mod_fcgid: can't get tmp dir");
  645 return HTTP_INTERNAL_SERVER_ERROR;
  646 }

A df -h shows:

Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/mapper/VGLSI-root 30G 6.7G 23G 23% /
devtmpfs32G 0 32G 0% /dev

/dev/mapper/VGLSI-var 489G 184G 305G 38% /var

Apache status shows:
mod_fcgid status:

Total FastCGI processes: 3
Process: php5.fcgi (/home/crm/fcgi-bin/php5.fcgi)
Pid Active IdleAccessesState
11573 217460 79 Ready
11574 217449 72 Ready
10713 290012 165 Ready

/tmp used to be on its own filesystem, on the off chance that has an effect, we
removed it to use root filesystem. No impact. Even if at the instant in time
the root filesystem was full, and it isn’t, it happens forever until we restart
Apache. Once it starts, all Sugar file uploads fail.

I know that mod_fcgid obtains it’s temp dir when a file is larger than some
threshold, a value set. Ours is default value, whatever that is. I am not sure
where this can be tuned, anyone know? Is it perhaps FcgidMaxRequestInMem? What
is the impact to the system if I change this to say 100MB? Will each process
consume that much more memory, or, is the memory freed? If I can increase it to
larger than anyone ever uploads, seems like I might avoid the problem as long
as I don’t lose all the memory permanently so to speak.

Here’s our mod_fcgid config:

FcgidIPCDir /run/mod_fcgid
FcgidProcessTableFile /run/mod_fcgid/fcgid_shm
FcgidMaxRequestsPerProcess 500
FcgidMaxProcesses 100
FcgidMinProcessesPerClass 0
FcgidIOTimeout 121
FcgidIdleTimeout 600
FcgidErrorScanInterval 10
FcgidFixPathinfo 1

mod_fcgid version is Centos 7 standard 2.3.9 with Apache 2.4.6 as we use the
standard repository. The application used to be running on Centos 6 without
issue. That uses Apache 2.2.15 and mod_fcgid 2.3.7

Re: [users@httpd] Plumbing svn over https and mod_proxy_html

2013-07-25 Thread Glob Design Info
On most platforms you have to set some kind of client-side specifics to
tell it what port, name, and repo you are using.

On 7/24/13 11:00 PM, Philip Prindeville wrote:

Hi.

I have Intranet access to SVN/DAV over HTTPS and it works fine.

Now I need to open it up to external access, using mod_proxy_html to forward
requests to the /repos/ path to the SVN server from our corporate server (which
is where we port-forward 80 and 443 from the outside).

I've been playing with this a couple of hours, but can't get it to work.

In particular, the mod_proxy_html doesn't seem to know what to do with methods
like OPTIONS from what I can decipher.

Anyone does this before? Or have any ideas how to do it?

Thanks,

-Philip

Hi Eric,

yes i would say so because i dont know a IP balancer for apache. and i
think your description points to a potential asymetrical routing issue
which only happens with a IP balancer.

i think the problem mentioned here is a "asymmetrical routing
issue" you have with IP load balancer, where a Apache behaves
differently it acts like a proxy with the additional feature of
balancing the load and not doing a IP balancing like a BigIP

so this shouldn't be an issue with an Apache

In Apache, you can just list any number of addresses in each
and any number of ServerAlias'es for name-based
vhosts,
so no magic is required to access them from the internal network.

Can you describe the problem more directly?

It's probably defined in whatever shell invoked

accessed by ${FOO} in the config.

OK, so if I run Apache in Windows 7 from an EasyPHP install with the

Apache: C:\EasyPHP-5.3.3\apache

The Windows environment variable "Path" is set to:

Re: [us...@httpd] LDAP authentication with password encryption from browser to web server

2010-09-28 Thread [triplepack] info (i...@pack3.ch)

Digest does more then just encrypting the password.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digest_access_authentication

and if you have a look at that RFC http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2829.txt
LDAP it self possibly supports already digest-md5.

so really the LDAP auth should support the digest auth by maybe just
forwarding the digest-md5 to ldap?

http://www.latenightpc.com/blog/archives/2007/08/31/no-authtype-digest-with-ldap-authentication-provider-for-apache-today
seems to be a very known topic :)

 William,

Thanks. There is no way to make Digest authentication work with LDAP
from what I have found/read. But it seems to me that someone must
have already run up against this sometime before now. Is my
understanding correct that one can use Digest authentication to
encrypt the password between the browser and the web server? If so,
it seems like there ought to be a corresponding solution (to get that
same encryption capability) with LDAP. From the answers I've been
getting, I'm beginning to think that it might be time to submit an
enhancement request to the Apache developers. I'll wait a bit longer
to see if anyone else knows of a way to accomplish this with existing
capabilities (besides SSL, which is, as I said, my backup plan).

Our Apache web server (version 2.2.11 running on Solaris 10) is
currently authenticating
users via LDAP successfully. But, we would like to have an
*encrypted* password sent from
*the browser to the Apache web server* when authenticating via
LDAP. I understand that
encryption is performed from the web server to the LDAP server by
using ldaps, which we
are using, but we are getting complaints that the password is
traveling from the users'
web browsers to our Apache web server in the clear (not encrypted).
The problem really
requires that the web browsers and Apache support an encrypted
authentication over http
instead of counting on wrapping everything via https. It would be
nice if the public key

encryption worked between the browser and Apache for the password part.

I understand that I could force the users to use an https URL
instead of an http URL, but
that seems like it would be overkill. If that is the only solution
to this issue, then we
would really want the user to authenticate over https, but then fall
back to http for all
of the rest of the communications to the web server so as not to
incur the inherent
performance penalty of https. Any hints on how to do that
effectively/efficiently would

be welcome in that case.

I also understand that using the Digest method of authentication
(vs. Basic) does not work
with LDAP, because, if I understand it correctly, this method
doesn't even send the

password, which, of course, LDAP would need.
The only way to secure Basic auth is with SSL. Basic is simply
encoded in 64 bit space
to make it safe for 7-bit transport. What you want is Digest auth,
which then ties the
digest key to the hashed user/pass/domain and secures the token from
being snarfed for

requests from yet a third IP address.

I don't know of any simple mechanism to store digest credentials in
ldap (see htdigest

and the mod_auth_digest module for further details).

Re: [us...@httpd] graceful restart occasionally gives "could not bind" error

2010-05-30 Thread [triplepack] info (i...@pack3.ch)

Hi,

from my point of view such a thing is very common either if you have a
heavily loaded web server in combination with certain modules e.g.
fastcgi or so.

i was looking once already for kind of a "start delay" of apache restart
and apache graceful but could not find anything to say that such a delay
is probably as well more fixing the phenomena and not the real issue

but what i did then is a restart with basicaly stopping apache either
graceful or just with a stop then checking for 443 and 80 listening
processes in a loop for a certain time and as soon all the listen ports
are gone i start up the apache again

this can be obvously extended by killing everything related to your
apache instance after e.g. 5min if required and if you want to have
something for analysing the problem you even can do a coredump of that
particular processes before you kill them or what ever you might want to
check during that time.

i think the main issue is that there are still child processes hanging
around for some time even they got sent a kill signal (what happens with
stop and graceful-stop (in the case of graceful only after a certain
delay if configured with |GracefulShutdownTimeout
<./mod/mpm_common.html#gracefulshutdowntimeout>|))

If you can make it happen pretty often, you could try doing an
strace/truss/ktrace (I think it's ktrace on BSD) of the process to see what
system calls it's making and exactly which is failing. You could also try
running "netstat -an |grep :443" right before and after you run it to see if
there's anything else listening on port 443.
One possibility is that the SO_REUSEADDR socket option somehow isn't being
set, which would be visible in a trace.
Another possibility may be that a child process is doing something with the
socket that prevents it from being closed. You could look in the logs
between restarts and see if that gives a clue. Maybe there's one script
that is triggering this, for example. If you tried a graceful restart every
minute or less, the log interval might be small enough to give you useful
information.
You could also try systematically disabling things and see if that helps,
starting with any modules that aren't used.
I have had similar problems on earlier versions of Apache but was never able
to figure them out. They would only happen once or twice a year, so I
wasn't able to do much troubleshooting. I know that doesn't help, but maybe
it's nice to know that you're not the only one who has seen problems like
this.
Hope this helps!

[EMAIL PROTECTED] Correct use of UserDir directive.

2008-07-15 Thread KENNEY, William P. (Info. Tech. Services)
Hello,

I am building a new web server with apache 2.2.
I have 300 users on this server and would like to allow about half of
them to publish personal web pages from their home directory.
The UserDir directive will accomplish this adequately as I may insert
"UserDir disabled" to disallow all and then insert "UserDir user1 user2"
etc to allow specific users to host web pages in their home directory.

My first question is:

Will the UserDir directive accept input from a text file or must all
usernames exist in the httpd.conf file?

If an input file is not an alternative, then may I enter users in groups
as follows in the httpd.conf file?

UserDir disabled
UserDir user1 user2 user3
UserDir user4 user5 user6

and so on to make the httpd.conf file more readable?

Thanks in advance,

Bill

Hi everyone!

Is anybody know how i limit the path, shown in the browser, to always
show the adress or ip of the server but never the directory or files
that was used to show the html?

Joshua has already explained why this is a bad idea from the point of
view of your clients.

But I might add that it does nothing to help your "security" either.
The
simple fact is that browser *has* to have a unique URL for each
resource

(image, page, CSS, etc.) on your site. Whether this URL is printed in
the browser location bar is irrelevant from a security point-of-view,
since it is certainly available in plain-text in the HTML source.

Put it another way, if an attacker is so stupid that he doesn't know
about "[right-click] -> View Source", then he is never going to be able
to hack you anyway.

In any case, trivial details about your filesystem are useless to a
hacker. Unless he has an exploit that can open a shell on the server,
knowing the odd directory name is no use (and if he does get in, he
immediately knows everything about the filesystem anyway). So keep your
system secure - up-to-date server software and OS.

I guess your real concern is that you feel uneasy about putting paths
to

cgi and SQL arguments on the query-string (eg,
/cgi/my_db_query.pl?name=Fred&age=35&shoe=44). You shouldn't -
obviously

your CGI script is written in such a way that it carefully parses user
input (tainting, removing suspicious characters etc.) Isn't it? Well,
it

should be...

But, if you really want to decouple the URL-space from the real
filesystem, consider using mod_rewrite, or if you really want to go to
town, install Cocoon.

Owen Boyle

It is really a security measure, since i'm developing an erp with

Do you know how it is done? I dont want to bookmark any pages or so.
Your last solution works right away. Thanks.

Why shouldn't they be able to bookmark pages? I hate web apps that
force things like that on me. At worst, you should just use a session
id in the url and redirect to an intro page if the session is expired.

Can i ask some other thing?
Is there anyway to prevent the same user/password to be accepted by
the

server. Or one setup of user/password can be use like for 10 people or
so?

Using HTTP Basic auth? No. There are no such controls in apache.
You'd need to monitor the logs and lock out abused accounts.

If you are rolling your own sessions (using cookies of some kind),
then it is up to your application to track this.

That's a really bad idea. It destroys one of the most fundementally
useful parts of the web: the URL that references a resource. In so
doing, it makes it impossible to bookmark pages, send links, properly
index your site for search engines, and many other things.

You can't do this directly with apache, since apache only cares about
translating urls into resources. People who want to do it usually use
a simple html frameset with invisible frames.

Have you considered leaving the onboard installation of Apache
(located in /usr) as it is, but turned off, and building and
installing your very own Apache elsewhere (say, /usr/local)?

"had no success" is not very descriptive. Exactly what happened?
Exactly what was in the error and access logs?

# Controls who can get stuff from this server.
Order allow, deny

No space between allow, and deny please.

Allow from 192.168
Deny from all

The deny is evaluated last according to the allow statement and
therefore denies all access. I think you want "Order deny, allow".
Iff what you want is to allow from 192.168 OR if the person has a
password, then you also need to add "Satisfy Any".

# Security measures
AuthType Basic
AuthName "Restricted Files"
AuthUserFile /Library/Apache2/passwd/passwords
Require valid-user

This looks basically fine.
