AW: F25: Desktop PC not booting without a screen

2017-03-27 Thread Eigeldinger Simon
Hi Stan, Hi Ed,

I guess the plugs or the transistor seems to be the only solution at the moment.
I wonder if we could ask the devs to find a solution to that?
According to the wayland people this shouldn't be much trouble.
As far as i know Fedora already uses wayland?

Greetings and thanks,
Simon

The whole ksm concept is lame, and the implementation is worse.
Unless you are running thousands of identical virtual machines
on your system, you can safely turn off ksm. (I uninstalled
it just to make absolutely sure it wouldn't pop back up which
too many things do under systemd).

F25 - outragous memory consumption

2017-03-27 Thread Fulko Hew
Running F25 I'm seeing (IMHO) some outrageous memory consumption
Here's what top showed (just before the system hung up completely).

ksmserver taking 13Gig of memory !
pulseaudio taking almost 4Gig !

Wow.
No wonder my system hung.

Comments anyone?

TIA
Fulko

That's a very large size, so it is obviously wrong.

> Anyone else seeing this?

No, and my F25 system updated just fine today. It seems crazy that
icoutils would cause a problem in python3 / dnf. Is there any chance
that your disks or memory are going flaky?

You could try downgrading to the previous version of the dnf packages
to see if it is a dnf error. You would probably have to go to koji
https://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/packageinfo?packageID=14310
to get them at this point. To see what packages you need, do a
dnf remove dnf
and make sure to hit NO. Look at the dependencies that would be erased,
and get all those packages from koji.

Or, just try a reinstall of dnf (and its dependent packages) to see if
that fixes the problem.

To me, all of this makes perfect sense when applied to an installed and
running system.

However, in the original post, Simon referred to booting a "Fedora
Workstation Live USB". AFAIK, the Live image does not contain the
xorg-x11-drv-dummy. Additionally, the way the Live image is structured
I don't believe there is the chance to make a configuration change to
the drivers that are being used.

That is why I only suggested the dummy plugs.

Weird crashes and slowdowns

2017-03-27 Thread Susi Lehtola

Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone else has noticed weird things happening on their
Intel laptops.

My Lenovo U31-70 has been misbehaving for a long long time under Fedora.
Firefox and/or X often slow to a crawl, and sometimes X even crashes.
I'm wondering if this is due to a buggy video driver.

Restoring a QEMU snapshot

2017-03-27 Thread Patrick O'Callaghan
I have a QEMU image snapshot:

$ sudo qemu-img info /var/lib/libvirt/images/Windows10.qcow2
image: /var/lib/libvirt/images/Windows10.qcow2
file format: qcow2
virtual size: 20G (21474836480 bytes)
disk size: 196K
cluster_size: 65536
backing file: /home/poc/Win10/win10.qcow2
backing file format: qcow2
Format specific information:
    compat: 1.1
    lazy refcounts: true
    refcount bits: 16
    corrupt: false

However when I try to restore the virtual disk I get:

$ sudo qemu-img snapshot -a /var/lib/libvirt/images/Windows10.qcow2
/home/poc/Win10/win10.qcow2
qemu-img: Could not apply snapshot '/var/lib/libvirt/images/Windows10.qcow2':
-2 (No such file or directory)

I must be doing something obviously wrong, but can't see what it is.
Hints would be appreciated.

The first answer on this page tells how to fake an attached monitor on
linux using the dummy driver. On Fedora that is package
xorg-x11-drv-dummy-0.3.7-1.fc25.x86_64
It involves creating a dummy xorg.conf with the parameters you want,
since there is no edid to read from the monitor to automatically create
it.

It's for Ubuntu, but should work fine on Fedora.

http://askubuntu.com/questions/453109/add-fake-display-when-no-monitor-is-plugged-in

There seem to be problems with it if an actual monitor is attached in
addition to the dummy, but that should not be a problem for you. If
necessary, though not stated there, it should be possible to create a
second configuration for the attached monitor, and then specify which
screen you want to load at X startup (it defaults to screen 0).

Hey guys...

Just noticed, in looking through the dialog for some dirs, I see a
curved arrow in some of the folder icons. This appears to indicate
previous versions of things like jre/jdk. Is this correct? Can't seem
to find anything in SO on this..

Thanks

AW: F25: Desktop PC not booting without a screen

2017-03-27 Thread Eigeldinger Simon
Hi Ed,

Here's a extract from an article about this matter:
Source: http://blog.zorinaq.com/the-5-second-vga-dummy-plug/

It made sense for drivers to not enable a GPU when no monitor was attached to
it. But since the rise of GPGPU applications, graphics vendors AMD and NVIDIA
realized that this behavior was inconvenient. At least with the most recent
Linux drivers, dummy plugs are not necessary anymore.

So I wonder if the problem lies somewhere else.

Simon

What is your video output?

If it is HDMI, maybe get a "dummy" plug to fake the system into thinking it has
a monitor connected.

https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=HDMI+dummy+plug

Similar plugs are available for DVI.

I don't know what exactly is a hybrid graphics... Do you mean that there
are two graphic cards? It the case as far I can see:

lspci -vnnn | perl -lne 'print if /^\d+\:.+(\[\S+\:\S+\])/' | grep VGA
returns:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 4th Gen Core
Processor Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:0416] (rev 06) (prog-if
00 [VGA controller])
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
[AMD/ATI] Mars XTX [Radeon HD 8790M] [1002:6606] (rev ff) (prog-if ff)

So, I can see that the integrated graphic card is in use, not the ATI card.

I have two questions:
1- How to activate the ATI graphic card? This card is supported by linux
for I bought that computer from Dell with ubuntu installed to be sure
that the hardware is linux compatible and the ATI graphic was configured.

2- Why, as the ATI card is not in use, the radeon module is loaded by
the kernel?

F25: Desktop PC not booting without a screen

2017-03-27 Thread Eigeldinger Simon
Hi all,

I am Simon and I am blind.
I tried to boot a Fedora Workstation 25 live USB without a screen attached to a
desktop machine.
It seems the machine doesn't boot completely at least hanging while the desktop
should come up.

On the arch wiki i read something about x server and its autoconfig mode where
it detects the screen and if no screen is present it stops starting the desktop
which makes the PC hang.

According to the wayland mailing list this also happens with wayland though
wayland supports screenless booting. which needs to be specified in the wayland
adapter for gnome.

Anyone maybe knows more about that?

I thought of using Fedora on a project i have in my mind. Having a small PC
without a screen in the kitchen would be pretty interesting. navigation is done
using a keyboard and knowing where we are is done using the orca screen reader
and speakers.

Attaching a screen would be the last thing i want to do.

Greetings,
Simon

Are you sure that your atom processor has a Radeon video? ISTR that
initially, some manufacturers were bundling the early Atoms with nVidia
processors, and lots of information was available from the MythTV folks.
I just Googled Intel Atom, and one of the PDFs that Intel has published
talked about support for the Intel GMA500 graphics, which would imply
that you might have or need an Intel graphics driver.

atombios is an AMD (ATI) feature that has nothing to do with the Intel
Atom processor. Do a search for "atombios" and you'll find lots of info.

I could see that many people have this problem since several years (not
only with fedora: debian, ubuntu also)

It appears to be often related to hybrid graphics. Is that the case here?

Is there a kernel option to add at boot time?

I've found mention of adding "radeon.runpm=0".
