Any idea how this smudge column may be erased?

That is "Field shading". It tells you, that it is not a normal text, but
some functionality is involved. Such field shading is not printed, but
only shown on screen. If you do not like it, switch it off in menu View

Field shadings.

upgrading may be preferred over deleting and clean installation if you have a
highly customised product, e.g. with fine-tuned shortcuts, autocorrect lists,
spellcheck dictionaries, bibliography databases etc.

however, 3.0 is a rather old, oracle's rather than apache's, version. for this
reason, such a major upgrade can cause issues, so you should weigh pros and
contras. it may be of use to make a backup of your user profile (see release
notes for 3.4.1, section 'known issues', at
http://www.openoffice.org/development/releases/3.4.1.html for more details;
notes for 4.0.0 and 4.0.1 may also be of use, they can be found at
http://www.openoffice.org/development/releases/index.html).

clean installation may be a good choice if you have used only standard settings
with the previous version - in this case you have nothing to lose.

Unfortunately, there's nothing illegal about that. The sad part is that
some people are suckered into paying for something that's free.
However, there are some sites that sell a CD for a nominal amount and
provide a service for those who can't download OO. Those sites are fine.

A further clarification for the original poster: the official OpenOffice
downloads are indeed served through the SourceForge infrastructure. So
it's normal that the official download page

(dropping the "security" list as explained by Dave).

At times we can do something. The OpenOffice project owns and enforces a
number of trademarks. Due to the legal implications, this is often dealt
with in private, but we do enforce them.

In this case, the site does not mention OpenOffice anywhere and doesn't
use our trademarks (orb with gulls, logo...). Actually, we can't even be
sure that it sells OpenOffice; the license they describe is LGPL and is
not the current OpenOffice license.

Rick, did you discover this site as a "sponsored search result"
somewhere? If they bought keywords related to our trademarks we can do
something about it.

However, the icons for the individual applications on the page have
twin gulls and look similar to the ones used in Open Office.

That may be co-incidence.

Open Office Writer

2014-04-12 Thread Steve La Porta

Good morning. I learning how to navigate through the tracking
changes/red-lining feature of Open Office Writer.

I am editing a long project and want to become familiar with it. I am having
two initial problems and hoping to learn solutions.

1) I went into the preferences and changed the font color for editing from the
default red to dark blue. The edits I made were shown in dark blue, however,
after re-opening the file the next day, the edits all appeared in lime green?
Do you have any suggestions for maintaining the color of choice?

2) I find the underscoring of words, phrases, and punctuations to be visually
distracting -- especially in the context of strike through edits. In short,
there are horizontal lines everywhere on the page. Is there a means of undoing
the underscore feature?

Thanks very much for your help.

Cheers,

Steve

SourceForge is nothing to worry about. Here is the lead in paragraph from
Wikipedia defining SourceForge found by Googling Sourceforge. Open Office is
an open source project and SourceForge is where the source code is maintained.

SourceForge is a web-based source code repository. It acts as a centralized

Question

2014-04-12 Thread Yvonne Wiberg
Hello,

On my former computer I installed Open Office and I was able to save my
documents in .doc and .xls-format etc.
Then I was able to open the documents in the formats without any problems and
I was able to edit the documents.

Now I have got a new computer and once again I have installed Open Office.
This time I am able to save documents in .doc and .xls, but then when I try to
open the document the computer tells me that "this is an Office-document, you
must purchase Office and install it on your computer to be able to open the
document".

Why does this problem occur now on my new computer?
Doesn´t Open Office work as before any longer? Aren´t you allowed anymore to
save documents in .doc and .xls and then be able to work with the documents?

Thank you for your kind help in solving this problem.
It must still be possible to save documents in e g .doc-format and then be
able to edit the document, otherwise I do not see the purpose with Open Office
anymore.

Kind regards,
Yvonne Wiberg

Similar question, double-clicking on the file's icon displays the message
you're describing?

> Why does this problem occur now on my new computer?
>

If the answer to both questions is yes then I think the new computer might
have come with a trial install of MS Office and the old did not. If this is
correct a double-click on the file's icon on the old computer caused the
file to be loaded into OpenOffice. On the new computer the trial version of
MS Office is attempting to open the file when it is double-clicked.

This can be further tested by opening OpenOffice on the new computer and
using OO's "File | Open" menu to open your file. If this works to open your
files then the problem is with something called the "file association".

File association directs what program should be used to open a file when
the file is double-clicked.

If "File | Open" works then changing the file association to OO should
correct the problem.

To change file association follow the instructions here (for Windows 7)...

RE: Unsubscribe

Dave,Thank you for stepping in so that I may unsubscribe from Open Office
mailings. When I signed up for the Open Office mailings my email address was
probably sunny...@willapabay.org. Mail sent to sunnyday is forwarded to this
Outlook address. I had an interim address: morro...@gmail.com which is also
forwarded to me at this address: morro...@outlook.com. The sunnyday account
became "locked up" and unusable for sending or receiving and all address were

Hi:
I don't know if this is the proper address to reply to this. I've been
on this list for about a year now and other that read the material
coming through have had no other contact with the list. I have no idea
what you are telling me or if it is even real.
If it is this email address that is been bounced there are still
hundreds getting through.

Cheers,

Source code is maintained at the Apache Software Foundation by the Apache
OpenOffice project. See http://OpenOffice.Apache.org/.

SourceForge has served over 100,000,000 million downloads of Apache OpenOffice
as a gracious service to the community.

SourceForge also hosts the extensions and templates sites.

Wikis, the forums and OpenOffice.org are hosted at the ASF on Apache
infrastructure.

Dave

Hi Bud,

it looks like a couple of emails from the AOO users list to you have
been bouncing. That is likely an issue of the mail server that hosts
your email account.

The message you have been receiving was automatically generated to 1)
inform you about the issue and 2) to testify if the problem is persistent.

Best regards
Peter

Hello,

On my former computer I installed Open Office and I was able to save my

Then I was able to open the documents in the formats without any problems

I was able to edit the documents.

Now I have got a new computer and once again I have installed Open

This time I am able to save documents in .doc and .xls, but then when I

open the document the computer tells me that "this is an Office-document,
you

Why does this problem occur now on my new computer?
Doesn´t Open Office work as before any longer? Aren´t you allowed anymore
to
save documents in .doc and .xls and then be able to work with the

Thank you for your kind help in solving this problem.
It must still be possible to save documents in e g .doc-format and then

Hej Yvonne !

öppnas i
de nämnda OpenOffice-program

Lycka till !
