RE: Ribbon Interface

2016-09-09 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
This is as good a place for your question as any.

You can tell there are strong differences felt about other user interfaces.

In any case, no developers have taken an interest in this and it won't happen
unless a volunteer developer with the capacity, capability, and will to
undertake something like that offers to provide it.

Since it would impact the Linux and MacOSX interfaces too, this seems very
unlikely.

Re: mp4 video not supported in Impress

2016-09-09 Thread Andrew Pitonyak
I asked about the ability to embed other formats to understand if you were able
to embed anything, not to imply that you needed to encode in another format.

The other point is that mp4 is a container and dues not imply the codec. I
eclectic that the problem is either am inability to embed anything or that the
codec is not supported. I suppose it is possible that the mp4 container is not
supported but I think that is not accurate.

Regardless, there is no plan and no likelihood that Apache OpenOffice will

I hesitate to query an expert, and I'm not sure exactly what you mean here.
But in OpenOffice Writer I can:
o Create two frames - which can be on unrelated pages, of course.
o Link the frames.
o Insert text into the first frame - which then flows into the other.
o Select the text (so in both frames).
o Insert a section with multiple columns. The single section contains all
the text and is divided between the linked frames.

Does that achieve what you describe?

[orcmid]

It is at best a mix. There are functions of Publisher that OpenOffice Writer
does not have (such as column flow into non-contiguous pages) but that might
not matter to you. And Publisher tends to depend on Word as a choice source of
content to import into Publisher.

Publisher 2016 is included with the desktop applications provided under Office
365 Home and Personal (along with Access). That's how I happen to have it
(except with 365 Business). If you only need a non-business subscription to
Office 365, those would seem to be useful.

If you are still running Publisher, it should be easy enough to install Apache
OpenOffice and do your own comparison testing.

And there are many Desktop Publishing Software products around, and a few are
free. Without knowing more about your needs, other than as a beginner, it is
difficult to recommend particular options among them.

Just remember, however you approach this, to always keep progressive backups
and be careful how you close your work and shut down your computer, avoiding
any kind of loss of your work to only the most recent changes.

Re: mp4 video not supported in Impress

2016-09-09 Thread Andrew Pitonyak

First question, since I know little to nothing about this that is not
many years out of date:

Q1: Are you able to insert other video formats? The obvious OGG Vorbis
format comes to mind.

If you can embed other formats, then

MP4 is just a container, do you know what codec is used to encode the
contained video? It is similar to saying that you cannot play the video
contained in a ZIP file. OK, so the comparison is not really good,
but

If the codec used is not supported, then for certain you cannot do it.

I spend little to no time doing this sort of thing, but, I believe that
you can use a program called "mediainfo", but I would first check to see
if your OS supports just giving you that information with an already
installed tool:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/mediainfo/
https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo

Again, I have NOT tried these two programs, but I found it listed in
the following article that lists five tools to find out about the codecs
used

https://www.raymond.cc/blog/determine-audio-video-codec-required-to-play-downloaded-movies/

Now, that said, give this a read:

This is a Ford versus Chevrolet matter (or Toyota versus BMW, if you prefer).
Absolute statements like this are not helpful. There are folks who find the
ribbon and its growing consistency across Windows to be very useful, especially
since you can make the whole thing disappear and pop down only when you want it.

Regardless, there is no plan and no likelihood that Apache OpenOffice will
offer a ribbon interface. Apache OpenOffice was never intended as a Microsoft

such massive change to the interface.

In my view, there is greater benefit in having better interchange at the
