Re: Please help- file lost

2020-12-07 Thread Lucetta
I have also had this problem, this year was the first time ever in 29 years w/
computers. Was working w/ someone else in a rush working from home w/ out her
office equipment.

You are not alone!
Can you look through all the other places where you might have saved an earlier
version?

I now save documents and other important files in a variety of places going
along. Documents folder, desktop, specifically named folder for that type of
file, project folder etc. Messy but necessary for the way I work.

You can also set up a backup to an external hard drive/ rocket stick or dongle
etc so as to save elsewhere than your computer incase of hard drive problems.

Every time I save a document it gets a slightly different name. As an
example... name, date, v 1,2 etc. V being version for that date. Messy but
reliable.

You may have a slightly earlier version somewhere which would avoid you having
to redo everything. Can you do a general search w/ slightly different names?

You can also email versions to yourself. You will then have the file in your
email as sent & received mail boxes. Do this at the end of the day.

Good luck!
We have all been there & it is a hard learned lesson. Everyone has this story
too so don’t feel to bad just deal with it for the future.

Re: After all these years ... still buggy implementations ... do users still tolerate it?

2020-10-24 Thread Lucetta
People who can’t use OO, like myself move on.
The tech help here at all volunteers & I greatly admire their enthusiasm,
talents & energy!

Still get get digests as I can’t be bothered working out how to remove my
email from the list. Also any info can turnout to be useful & reused in a
slightly context. Actually I’m nostalgic about the whole concept & very much
admire & appreciate the volunteers who work on others behalf.

At tax time last year our accountant, under lockdown couldn’t get into my OO
spreadsheets. Long after we worked out that it was her problem but made it
mine. I had to buy a new laptop & Excel. Then learn how to use them and rewrite
my spreadsheets from scratch as I could not import the originals in any way the
accountant could read.

I posted a question & was sent some seriously nasty messages that disappeared
after reading. (Now I print anything important immediately)

Good luck

Re: Migrating from MSO

Stick with Microsoft.
I spent more time than I cared to sorting this out & eventually replaced
software & older much loved hardware at an extremely awkward time.

Not helped by a troll & disappearing & impossible to copy emails. (If you get a
bizarre email sent to you personally through this group print it out as proof)

Still love OO but eventually...

2020-02-21 Thread Lucetta
Can’t speak for you situation. However something has changed with the base
code in some operating systems. It technical & outside of my computer
understanding. I don’t understand it, something to do with base code and macros
or executables, but far outside of my depth of knowledge.

My Open Office spreadsheets created on my 2009 MacBookPros can no longer can be
opened with Excel. If they open it is text only & can’t be manipulated.

I am redoing all my OpenOffice spreadsheets from scratch for our accountant in
an old Excel which I’m hoping will work. Just don’t have time to get & learn
new equipment & software.

Also my Norton went very buggy & replacement security was even worse. Not sure
how or if that fits in but happened at the same time.

I’m having to replace all my computers and software. Something happened with a
recent update to my Mac OS but apparently it was only a matter of time.

If anyone has any suggestion they would be much appreciated. But I’ve run out
of time to play around & am just heads down redoing everything.

Re: Lost File

2019-08-26 Thread Lucetta
Another low tec suggestion for the future.

When I open a data file, any data file, I save as with the same name but the
current date in my Documemts folder. It’s is just another process but manual &
glitch proof. It has come in handy several times.

Also low tec and not sure if it will answer you question. You can go to your
older version highlight everything then control c, go to a new spreadsheet,
click on top left cell and control v to paste your old copied data into your
new blank spreadsheet. Then check to see if the formulas are still intact. If
not manually insert them into a new inserted column or row as necessary.

Good luck!

OO Spreadsheets not saving

2019-04-18 Thread Lucetta
Hi all!

Firstly I’ve been getting the emails and following the questions and answers
and really appreciate the work done by the community. Have learnt a lot by just
reading the digest everyday. Sadly I’m not really knowledgeable enough to
participate much, actually once, a Mac problem more than OO

My question today is can I do anything to stop my fairly simple spreadsheets
from not accepting changes when I save as with a new title or when I save them
in Excel. I always save a changed document with the current date added to the
title.

I only discovered this in the last week with our accountant. She would get
gobble gook when she opened my spreadsheets.

I resolved the issue by using another macbookpro, same in all respects but with
Microsoft Excel

It was still a lot of work to move everything over and check line by line. But
I learnt a lot.
I am using a MacBookPro (27-inch,early 2009 with IS X Yosemite

2.66 GHz intel Core Duo
4GB 1067 MH z DFR3

W/ Apache OpenOffice 4.1.1

This was installed in 2009 by my techie and has have no problems until very
recently.

I know my equipment is old but hesitate to replace until I can work out the
issue as I love Mac products for there low electrical field and don’t want to
switch to something else. If I have to I’d appreciate any recommendations.

My techie suggests switching to custom build w/ ubantu

Any and all advice would be appreciated. I only get the digest so won’t be
replying in a timely manner

Thanks in advance

Re: Old documents.

2018-04-11 Thread Lucetta
Open OpenOffice
Go to the top bar on your screen
Click on File & hold your finger down
Scroll down to second item which is Open...
This will open an Open window
On the second bar just below the title Open you will see three icons on the
right hand side.
Click on the first icon, a tiny file folder with an even smaller green & red
arrows.
This will open a /Users window probably with you name as user after the slash
In the window under this you will see Desktop
Documents
Downloads
Library
Movies
Etc
Etc
I’m not going to list all these as yours may be different
Double click on Documents to open that folder
Scroll down to find you document
Double click on your document to open

If you can’t find your document go back to the the folder icon on the top right
with the little green & red arrow & click again to return to the /Users/
Then click on another folder.

Work your way through the possible choices Your file might also be in Desktop
or where ever you automatically save your documents.

You can also go to the bottom of the window to File name
Enter the name of your document and click on open on the far right

You can further refine you search at the bottom of the /Users/ window with
version: and File type.
I recommend you leave that at the default, All files( can’t duplicate the
other symbols on my phone)

Good luck!

Re: Lost Work

2017-04-10 Thread Lucetta
Every time I open a data file and make any changes I then save it with that
day's date added to the title. That way you will always have multiple copies
and can go back to an uncorrupted version if necessary.
When I send someone a file their name in addition to the date is added.

This is in addition to regular complete back ups of everything on my computer
to an exterior & portable hard-drive, which is stored in a separate building.

I like LaCie and I don't trust any version of the cloud.

You have just reminded me I need to start another backup system for a new and
separate technical laptop.

Doesn't help you now but may in the future.

Sorry you have this problem and it may be a very small comfort to know that
most of us have worked out our sometimes very personal backup strategies after
some catastrophic event.

Good luck

Re: OpenOffice doesn't work

2017-01-08 Thread Lucetta
Hi John, I've had this problem several times in the past.

By default Apple has changed the security settings to only allow installation
of apps from the Mac App Store and identified developers. To change this
permanently or temporarily go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy. On
the General Tab click the little lock in the lower left corner to unlock the
general preference pane. Then select the Anywhere radio button beneath Allow
applications downloaded from:

You can then change you preferences back after installing Open Office or any
other reliable software you need.

Good luck!

In the dining living room. Plugged into a outlet behind the sideboard. It can
be unplugged from the charger? And varied around the house if the reception is
bad in the bedroom as an example.

Guess I'm just really really tired.

Can't even think of going to sleep. Christine had gone over so much stuff and I
can't remember half.

Just had a shower & going downstairs to dry my hair.

Mum seems just like herself but tires easily. Don't think she has even out of
bed since she arrived at Ravenhill. Hillary and Gordon went with mum to the
hospital. They thought she was going to die I think right in the ambulance.

She remembered you and staying in Whistler. Pretty well every thing she did in
Canada over the years.

Think I'm going to be the one to break it to her she will be staying there and
not going back home. We are playing everything by ear and going day by day

BTW I recently tried to force an update on my early 2009 Macbookpro running

After an anxious period opened

Repair Disk Permissions

Problems solved, back on OO 4. 1. 1 and see no need for an update.

Can you go back to your old Mac, close all OpenOffice files, quit OpenOffice
then import your documents again?

I keep my documents backed up onto a separate USB from the routine backups to
an exterior hard drive. That way I can easily access the files I use most in
case of any problems.

I save my document files using "save as" on the drop down menu and adding the
current date at the end of the file name whenever I open and amend a document.
It is then easy to go back to any the earlier versions.

There are more sophisticated methods but this is simple and relatively idiot
proof.
