CALC problem

2020-08-21 Thread Mike Shearer
I have a spreadsheet containing information about events that occur at
various times over two weeks.  I wish to sort the entries by the elapsed
time in minutes between successive events.  A simplified example: column
A and B contain the date and time when events occur, column C contains
the calculated time delay between events using "=B2-B1" displayed as
hour:minutes.  Column D calculates the time elapsed between events in
minutes using "=HOUR(C2)*60+MINUTE(C2).  I want to "play" with the
values in column D, such as sorting them and charting the results to
highlight various characteristics of the original data.

How can I copy the calculated values from column D rather than take the
formulae that determine the values?

BASE questions

2019-07-29 Thread Mike
I'm new to Base and discovering just how ignorant I am despite 40 years
working in IT.  I have created a simple data base with three tables.
When trying to create relationships and forms it's become obvious that
some of my field definitions need to be changed.  Problem 1: how can I
display all of the variables I used to specify each field?    Problem 2:
I created a table and made a mess of it.  How can I delete that table?
DROP TABLE ... hasn't worked.  Problem 3:  The ID in my main table is a
numeric sequential number.  Can I define the field so that the number is
automatically assigned using a field type?

Background:  I'm working in OpenOffice 4.1.6 on a MacBook Pro running
MacOS 0.13.6.  My first reference is to LibreOffice 4.0 Base Handbook,
OO helps, OpenOffice Forum, then finally Google.  I assume that
LibreOffice BASE and OO BASE are sufficiently similar that LO
documentation should be relevant to OO BASE.

Apache Open Office 4.1.1

After upgrade, files locked

I am having difficulty opening and editing my docs after upgrading
openoffice.org to apache version.

Some of these docs are very important and I can’t even view my list I’m
managing for myself
and my parents, having the responsibility of their estate.

My files say they are LOCKED.
Asks me if I want to overwrite or when I attempted to do so, doesn’t work,
If I remember correctly.

I am on an AirBook Mac.

I tried working with the access under the info section of the file,
I tried copying the file to try and edit it without success, I’m not sure what
to do.

I tried opening with both the previous version and the current with no success.

I have searched the support forums and google for answers with no solution so
far.
I understand some have an understanding of programming with code which I am not
capable
or not sure I’d be comfortable doing...

How can I get passed this issue!

Appreciate any help, it would help me a lot to be able to access these docs!

4.1.4 and charts in spreadsheets

2017-10-26 Thread Mike

Hi,

since upgrading to 4.1.4 charts that I create from spreadsheet data (and
have been doing for years satisfactorily) are not saved with the
spreadsheet as was the case pre 4.1.4

This is more of an irritant than a problem, the charts are created as
useful visual summaries of data, and are easily recreated and then
copied into text documents.  Even so, ideas for a workaround would be
welcomed, pending correction of what I assume is a bug or oversight.

I use OSX 10.9.5 on a MacBook Pro.

Bright ideas/help re images in Calc

2015-10-26 Thread Mike

Hello!

I want to make a list of maybe 400-600 items, each with a thumbsize
image. Other data includes a major and minor category name, and
descriptive text. I want to be able to sort the list on the category
names, at least.

I have been experimenting with Calc and have of course come up against
the problem of images not sorting as part of rows. I much prefer the
simplicity of Calc to using Base (which I've never managed to master).

One solution I've thought of but not worked thru is to hold the images
in a separate Calc sheet and then in the main sheet refer to the image
cell address. Is there a clever way of then merging the sorted main
sheet and the images sheet so that the images are properly associated
with the descriptions - either for display only, but preferably for
print. Or some other way of achieving the same result?

A fall back solution is to create the main sheet, sort it, add the
images, then make changes only by deleting or adding rows. That'd be
acceptable, but limits new sorts that I don't anticipate now but may
find would be useful later on - such as sort by item $$ value.

I've looked on the 'net for catalogue systems for museums, art galleries
etc, and while they cover what I want they all have seemed to be over
complicated.

I'm running AOO 4.1.1 on a MacBook Pro running OS X 10.9.5

Calc and an images problem

2014-08-05 Thread Mike
I have a Calc file with rows 3.2cm high and including a column into
which I wish to insert jpg images which are all 3cm high. When the
spreadsheet was initially opened I was able to insert the images
anchored to the cells. After closing the file and reopening it, the
images have shifted down and slightly overlap the cells below, and they
are no longer effectively anchored, and FormatAnchor indicates cell
anchoring. Sorting the rows works for the text cells but the images
seem anchored to the page. I have tried deleting the images and
re-inserting using PictureFrom File but no image is inserted and no
feedback as to why not. I have tried inserting linked images but no
images appear in the cells, though the links file looks OK according to
the manual.

My objective is to create a spreadsheet inventory of household furniture
etc, each entry to include a thumbnail photograph in jpg format, with
dimensional, source, cost etc data, able to be selectively sorted and
printed. It's all working except for the images. My preference is to
have linked rather than embedded images, with linking the thumbnails but
also including a text file reference to the original larger detailed images.

I'm running OS X 10.8.5 on a MacBook Pro and OO 4.1.0. I have spent
over an hour exploring the internet and OO manuals etc, without
getting any clearer idea of what's going on. (Time for a coffee and to
turn to other issues!) Any advice will be much appreciated.

You rather need to the request to unsubscribe to '

One question, where did you find the former email address? Maybe that's
the clue why a couple of other people complain as well that they're unable

Hi Mike, I use Thunderbird imap'd to gMail. The simple answer (and possibly
not technically correct) to your question is that gMail in itself is not a
program, like Microsoft Word is a program. Your computer can be set to open
the file type .doc with a program. As gMail isn't a program, it can't be
 select as the open with.

When you're working in your browser and offered email, it's your browser
that is handling that, not your system, hence why it can offer the gMail
 option.

I believe a few people have shared some ways around this, so it can be
 made to do it. I find Thunderbird the easiest, as I use it for my email;
hence why I choose that route.

Open the program that you had been using for opening .wk1 files.
Then open your files from within this program.
What you have is a file association problem. If you use Windows,
search Help for file association. It should tell you how to convert
 them back.
For that matter, these files were not converted at all. Your
operating system decided to change what program it will use to open these
files when you double click on them.
