This is explained in the Contact us section of the extensions website,
but indeed many users don't pay attention to it.

The problem is the code in the description.xml:
   update-information
src xlink:href=http://ooop.sourceforge.net/update/extensions.xml;

  /update-information
There are no updates, so it should either be removed or ignored.

Exactly, this is a trivial fix. If you would like to get ownership of
the extension in order to fix it, this can probably be arranged: user
Kami will be notified and if he doesn't object you can become
co-maintainer of the extension (to the sole purpose, for the time being,
to publish a version without the broken update feed). Contact the site
 administrator (Technical questions) at
 http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/en/websitecontact and put me
 in CC in case.

Andrea.

Thanks Andrea.. I think that I will pass on that kind offer :-) I don't
mind patching/modifying my own version, but don't I don't think I would
like to take ownership... I'd rather see Kami update his extension instead.

 Ralf Mulde wrote:

 This is extremely disturbing.

You installed a third-party extension, OOOP, that the OpenOffice project
has no control upon. This extension specifies an invalid update feed (to
be precise: the extension specifies that update information for that
extension must be downloaded form a URL that no longer exists).

Since OpenOffice can't do anything about this, you can solve this either
by uninstalling the extension or by asking its maintainer to provide a
fixed version. You can find more information in the list archives.

 Regards,
Andrea.

I think the basic issue is that this extension is available from the
Apache OpenOffie Extension site:

http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/project/oxygenoffice-english-templates

There is no disclaimer there that implies or indicates that AOO has
nothing to do with the exension. In fact quite the opposite: by hosting
the extension the user may be led to believe that the extension is
OK'ed/certified/approved by AOO. The AOO help file:

quote
To install an extension
An extension is available as a file with the file extension .oxt.
You can find a collection of extensions on the Web. Click the Get more
extensions here link in the Extension Manager to open your Web browser
and see the http://extensions.openoffice.org/ page.
/quote

and the extension manager takes the user to the Official AOO Extension
site. How is the user to know that once they've installed an extension
it is then their responsibility to chase after the extension author for
corrections? Of course you and I know that, but the standard user will not.

The author (Kami) seems to have gone 'walkabout' as this issue as been
around for some time:

https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=118147
(just what are the 'official' extension repositories?)
http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=105096
(Why does it continually tell us there's updates when it can't find the
updates?)

and

https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=58670

The problem is the code in the description.xml:

  update-information
   src xlink:href=http://ooop.sourceforge.net/update/extensions.xml; /
 /update-information

There are no updates, so it should either be removed or ignored.

 Observations so far confirmed that:
 - The issue exists, but it does not affect all Windows machines (of
course, we are only considering machines that are fully updated, since
the patch was issued by Microsoft while the OpenOffice 4.1.1 release was
 already being voted upon)
 - It is possible to temporarily uninstall the patch, install OpenOffice,
reinstall the patch without any problems for the OpenOffice operations.

We don't have enough details yet, even though it seems the patch affects
many other installers too. The conversation is at
 https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=125446
...

Status:CLOSED NOT_AN_ISSUE
doesn't look very helpful.

I was able to replicate (multiple times) on a Win 7 machine with AOO
4.0.1 installed. After I completely uninstalled AOO 4.0.1 (including
using CCleaner to clean the registry, temp files, etc., I was able to
install 4.1.1 without issue. If I get time I'll reinstall 4.0.1 and see
if I can replicate again. Also, I have Win 8.1 on a VMware VM if I get
time I'll see if I can replicate there also.

Right, but it's not the relatively knowledgeable user (of anything) that

Well, does this site have any good reputation? At a first look, the site

As for the report, of course OpenOffice has nothing to do with these

Yes I know that. Issue is that the use should not have to.
As I had already responded to another list member,
for a script to execute $@ instead of what itself (the script)
fallaciously calls itself (soffice), is totally misleading.
It should execute soffice.bin instead of $@.bin. Otherwise
it should be renamed something different.
 Just my opinion :)

Ah, now I see what you mean. I just recreated:

OT: Regarding other responses - unfortunately this list seems to have
broken threads all over the place. Not sure why - maybe gmane isn't
threading properly. I reply to one thread then find that others have

Re: Using fields for frame or draw object in writer

 Hi

I'm making a name label which I will finally cut the paper into pieces
and fold each piece of it in the middle into a reverse V shape.
I want to create text with fields, which one use normal text and the

 I found suggestion from here

 https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=30t=1168

Saying that the fields do not support draw object. However I don't
know how to rotate a frame into 180 degree. Paragraph style does have
options for 0, 90, 270, but 180 degree is missing.

If the objective is to rotate the text within the frame, then I'd
suggest using a Drawing text frame. From F1/Help:

Rotating Text
You can only rotate text that is contained in a drawing object.
1. Choose View - Toolbars- Drawing to open the Drawing toolbar.
2. Select the Text icon .
3. Drag in your document to draw the text object, and then type your text.
4. Click outside of the object, then click the text you entered. Click
the Rotate icon on the Drawing Object Properties toolbar.
5. Drag one of the corner handles of the text object.

You can also right-click the text object, choose Position and Size,
click the Rotation tab, and then enter a rotation angle or a new
position for the object.

The last is probably your best option as you can then enter 180 degrees
 the test will rotate accordingly.

Why do you think/find it necessary to use Microsoft Word?
