RE: Languages Office Writer

2016-07-05 Thread elderdanlewis
You can write using more than one language if you use styles. You can have a
paragraph in Spanish, another in German, and another in English. To do so,
create a paragraph style for each language. Or, you can mix languages by
creating a character style for each. Just make sure to apply the appropriate
style for your languages.

Hi,

I normally write in German, but as I am living in Spain, many words are
spanish, too. But always the program put These red lines under the spanish
words.

As I know, I can´t use more than one language with this program, but I think it
would be very useful if there will be a function to use more languages, at
least two at the same time.
It is only a idea, but maybe you find a solution?

Ah! Now someone can possibly be of help. Just a little more info, please. Can
you launch the Mac partition and do as I suggested? This time, we’ll want the
processor that’s installed. “About this Mac” will give it to you.

Stay tuned. There may be an Ubuntu command that will give you this information.
But I use a Mac, and run version 4.1.2, so I’m useless from this point on. If
you’ll provide that information, some other (Ubuntu) user will be in a position
to help. What partitioning software are you running? Parallels or VirtualBox or
something else?

The system requirements for the latest release, Apache OpenOffice 4.1.2, can be
found at

You will need to verify your actual OS X configuration, including version of OS
X.

The 4.1.x-required OS X 10.7 (Lion) was released in 2011. If you have not or
cannot upgrade your computer to OS X 10.7, you may have difficult running an
Apache OpenOffice 4.1.x release.

One problem I see with your premise is that with the database, after it
is created you have to then create some sort of application to
manipulate/retrieve the data.

Dale

As with any database, a DBMS is used to give the database its structure. A
RDBMS is used for a relational database. I want to show that creating tables is
not too different than placing related data in a spreadsheet including the
formatting of the cells that hold the raw data. Also, location of a cell is
similar: column and row vs column and primary key. Of course if talking about
the entire spreadsheet or database, sheet or tables would also be used.

Clearly you do not use styles very often. Neither does the previous post
above yours. (Doug) It is too general in nature. Suggestions need to be
specific in nature because the settings of each style is specific.
I learned how to use styles from the Getting Started Guide (2 chapters)

still available in updated versions.

Yes, it does. Then again,  it makes me wonder how great reveal codes are. If
it were important to many people, shouldn't someone who used them regularly
have kept the extension up to date? It would take some time to learn how to do
this though.
In this case, the person who stated that it should be part of OO should
"bite the bullet," learn how to create the extension,  and do so. Then he/she
should keep it up to date.
It might prove how important reveal codes really are by the number of
downloads of this extension.

So that makes it kind of useless in a world of OO 4.1.1.

Exactly. We had a variant of the bug that occurred upon installation and
profile migration from version 3.x; that one was fixed. These, much more
limited from the numbers we see, other occurrences are even harder to
track and diagnose.

> add an option to reset the user profile from a toolbar.

That has been the favorite option so far, together with an option for
resetting the profile when one (un)installs the program. You will find
the full discussions on the dev list, but technically the complexity is
that you can't delete the profile from a running OpenOffice (so this
would have to be scheduled for the next restart and coding it becomes
more complex) and that you (un)install the program system-wide, but your
profile is a per-user setting.

Regards,
   Andrea.

RE: Please stop copying Microsoft! They suck more every year!

2015-05-10 Thread elderdanlewis
Why don't I believe you? Perhaps it is because I have been using this
product since Star Office became available. I have used OpenOffice.org from
version 1.0 to 3.3. I even used it to help write documentation for it. (
Writer) I have used a spreadsheet to keep track of my finances. Considering the
number of linked sheets in it, I would never recommend anyone try this on a
smart phone. I have also written an autobiography part that contains 83000 plus
words and pics. Another contains 57000 plus words. Could I have done this with
the early versions of OOo? No. The present versions have many more features
than the earlier ones. Perhaps you have not taken the time to learn what the
program can do.
I am also helping a lady to write a document for her bridge group. It
contains text, pics, bullets, and different heading levels. We are not having
any problems doing it.
So, seriously, what is your real problem?

Hi there! I've been using your spreadsheet and word processor for at least 15
years (unless you're not that old... as long as I can remember, anyway). I'm
sorry to say that the usability of both has gone down quite a bit in the past
few years, and I suspect that it's because you're trying to copy Microsoft.
Microsoft sucks so much, there are no polite words for them. Why not try to
make things better than Microsoft? If you just took these programs from ten
years ago, and spruced them up a bit, that would pretty much do the trick.

Some examples:
Your word processor seems to have been redesigned for a smart phone. Smart
phones are for people who don't need to do huge amounts of research, cutting
and pasting, formatting, etc. You need to get some people to design things
like word processors and spreadsheets who actually use them on a pretty much
daily basis, because people who do all their typing on a phone can't imagine
the things that we used to be able to do.

The default should be that the things that I type stay exactly the way I typed
them. In the early 2000's, it was annoying that it took one button to change
this to the default. Now it's actually impossible. I' often have to actually
change what I want to write in the document, because I can't stop the damn
program from changing it. I click on all kinds of boxes that say they will
stop it, but they don't. If you want to make the default be like a smartphone,
could I please have one, easy to find button to click on, that says "leave my
goram typing the way I smegging well typed it." Please, I'm begging. I know A
LOT of people agree with me about this, and I don't know why nobody's
listening.

When I used to right-click on something, the box would open in a location
appropriate to the box. Now it opens relative to the cursor. This means that
if what I've clicked on isn't at the top of the page, I can't paste, because
the bottom of the box is below this stupid-ass see-through monstrosity of a
taskbar at the bottom of the screen (where I've lost actual windows before,
because I accidentally dragged them to the bottom of the screen, and it let me
drag it down, but then wouldn't let me click on the document once it was under
the taskbar). So have to scroll down, and click again.

There are quite a few operations that I used to do with one or two clicks, that
now take me four or five. I would really like to have back the ability to
right-click in the document and get the option for "paste special." I do this
approximately a million times a day, and I curse you every time. Not you
personally, more programmers in general.

When I click on something, the document keeps jumping around to put that line
more in the middle of the page. I put that line right where I wanted it, so I
can see all the lines I'm working on, and I don't want it to move.

The cursor doesn't disappear anymore when I'm typing, even though I've checked
all the appropriate boxes. This is so annoying. I start typing, and then I
can't see what I'm working on.

Seriously, this Windows 8 is so incredibly bad, it feels like the designers are
just pooping on consumers. That's not the word I'm really thinking... It's
obscene that they still control the market, when their product gets worse and
worse every year. There are so many functions that it doesn't do at all, and
these m-f-ing pop-up things mean that I have to spend a lot of time carefully
positioning the mouse so they won't all pop up, and make my freaking windows
disappear, or make it impossible to click on what I need to click on. Now is
the perfect time to take them down. I wish now that I'd kept up with my
programming, because I think that I could easily write something better than
Windows. I have to think that this is related to the fact tha

The license comes in the download file. You do not need an additional license
for a business.

Hi,
I am confused in all the information about the license, because of the
language. I would like to know if we need to request to you a license for a
business usage. I have known that some companies here in Mexico are using it,
even with a customized logo. I don’t need that much, just to know if the open
office can be used in a company and even if it is free, do I need still a
license?
Please Advise

To anchor graphics, create an empty paragraph. Then anchor the graphic as a
character. This keeps the graphic in its proper place.

Johnny:
Thanks for your reply. The photos are anchored to the page. I have found
that I must anchor them to the page to keep them from migrating to the wrong
page, as they have a tendency to do. But thanks for your insight.

Do you have a suggestion about how to prevent photos from migrating to the
wrong page, unless they are anchored to the page? If there is a different
method of keeping the photos on the page where I put them, then I wouldn't
need to anchor them to the page.

what is the picture ancored to? if it is anchored to page rather than to
paragraph or character, then page number switching could cause something
similar to your problem.

When you set a password the window give you the following:

Note: After a password has been set, the document will only
open with the password. Should you lose the password, there
will be no way to recover the document. Please also note
that this password is case-sensitive

If it is that easy to remove a password it doesn't make sense to set a
password in the first place.

You seem to have forgotten something. When a document has been saved with
a password, you must first reopen the document with the password before you
can change it. If you forget the password, you can not open it.

RE: Openoffice-Base

Simply put,  you must first  create the database including its tables and
fields. What you want in your template has to be created in a query.  Then use
the query as the basis for a report.

Good afternoon

I need assistance in templates that will work for a small business. All I
need is something to issue (make out delivery notes with automated delivery
note numbers), receive stock, stock availability and automated stock
reorders. I'm in charge of the parts store and sales and the system that we
are using is outdated (written book records). So I need something to help
me keep record of all the parts and their bin locations. When I make out a
delivery note the part issue must automatically be deducted from the
availability and if it comes to minimum required quantity it must
automatically reorder the stock to maximum level.

Do you perhaps have something similar to this or is this to complex to
make? Any suggestions is appreciated.

Kindest Regards

I use Calibre for doing this.

http://calibre-ebook.com is the link to get this program.

To use OpenOffice Writer with any success you need to use its its Styles
feature, rather than Direct Formatting.

You can modify the inbuilt Styles to match your desire. You will find a brief
exposition of these at
https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/UserGuide/Writer/Styles
and on the detail in links from that page,

There are two (at least) equivalents to Scrivener
Plume Creator at
http://www.plume-creator.eu/site/index.php/en/
and
oStoryBook at
http://sourceforge.net/projects/ostorybook/files/?source=navbar

Both of these are currently undergoing extensive rewriting. Of the existing, I
find Plume Creator more stable, although oStoryBook is perhaps slightly fuller
featured. The current release of this (4.9.14) is unstable so I'd advise using
one of the earlier releases.

But in the event that the work is complete and well ordered, there is no need
to use such an external application, whose main function is overview and
reordering of the sections of text. In the case of a well-ordered work, Writer
will give good layout and formatting facilities, good search and replace, good
spell checking. It also has the advantage that the file Writer outputs (in .odt
format) can be fed directly into Calibre, at
http://calibre-ebook.com/
which is the epublication converter par excellence.
