If you want to edit individual cells, then you will be destroying the
array structure, of course, so destroying the relationship the array
cells previously had to other cells - forsaking the existing array
formula, that is. I think you can achieve this easily by saving as
"HTML Document (OpenOffice Calc)", but this works well only for
single-sheet spreadsheets. In addition, it will freeze values
throughout the spreadsheet, so that the effect of formulae will be
lost generally, not just for the array you are concerned about. This
may well not be what you want or need.

Instead, why not just edit the range containing the array itself? You
have correctly observed that you cannot simply do this by editing
individual cells in the array range. But, as is so often the case,
Paste Special is your friend. Try this:
o Select the array range.
o Copy the selection.
o Paste the material somewhere else in the spreadsheet, but using
Edit | Paste Special... (or Ctrl+Shift+V) instead of ordinary Paste.
In the Paste Special dialogue, ensure Formats is ticked but that
Formulae is *not* ticked.
o Copy the pasted material.
o Paste back over the original range.
o Delete the temporary copy of the material.

This technique will preserve relationships defined by formulae in
your spreadsheet elsewhere than for your problem range.

I trust this helps.

I've never had occasion to do this previously, but I've now tested the
following procedure and it worked quite well for me : Launch Google
Translate (谷歌翻译) and choose «Chinese» (中文) as the input language and
«Chinese (traditional)» (中文(繁体)) as the output language. Copy the text in
simplified glyphs into the text box of the former (on the left), and *viola
!*, the same text, but in traditional glyphs, will appear in the right-hand
text box

You might want to do this a page at a time for simplicity's sake, but I
think you will find that it will work. Please report back and let me - and
other readers here who might be interested - know if, indeed, it does

If these are PDF files of any size, the best method is to use an OCR
application (Optical Character Recognition) which will convert them into a text
format. You will then have access to the t ext and can reformat and edit it as
you require. Many scanners come with OCR applications, but there are some free
applications downloadable from the Internet. I have used Tesseract, with
gimageReader as a front end, running on linux, but also available for Windows,
with good success.

It is important to be aware that the accuracy of the OCR process varies
according to the quality of the scan and of the original; typically there will
be a small number of recognition errors, so careful proofreading is essential,
particularly if the information is numeric.

OpenOffice and most (all?) other word-processors do not handle translation
directly.

You need to Copy and Paste your text from OpenOffice into a translation
application, such as Google Translate or Promt (in chunks of about 1000
words - depending on the requirements of the translation application); when
that has translated it into your target language Copy and Paste into a new
OpenOffice document. You will have to check the formatting, and also check
the translation, as all translations are imperfect.

If you do not speak Spanish, do not send the un-revised translation out -
send the text in English and let the recipients translate it themselves.

You could try
startx > logfile 2>&1

To start your desktop. This will save all desktop messages in logfile,
so you will have to look at the file after exiting the desktop and find
the pertinent messages. X has a log for X messages, usually in

/var/log/Xorg.0.log

but that probably does not help you much for an app error. You could

You might also look at the OpenOffice command line arguments with
openoffice3 -h
There may be something there that you could use.

Good luck.

Re: Converting files from Word Perfect x7

2016-08-02 Thread Jeffrey Deutsch
By that I meant that Word and OpenOffice['s Writer] aren't quite the same,
but the latter stood in for the former.

Word is the standard, because whoever opens your file just sees the .doc or
.docx at the end. They know little and care less that you actually
used OpenOffice['s Writer].

you found Word in OpenOffice. Did you also find Writer in Microsoft Office?

Hi Tom,

The list strips attachments so I didn't get anything but I'll be happy to
take a look if you send them direct. You may also want to try
ask.libreoffice.org where there are sure to be more expert people than me
around!

Tom,

Sorry but I haven't had any experience with .lwp files. I did a search and
those were just a few hits that I received. You may wish to do a search for
"how to convert a .lwp in Win8". I found many different links for this issue.

Sorry I can't assist any further but will read all of thread to learn.

One thing I can say (this is what I would do), install FoxItReader, then click
on your .lwp file and open it with FoxItReader - see if that works.

There is reputedly a viewer for such files ("Keyview for Lotus"),
from which you may be able to copy and paste the view into OpenOffice. See:

ftp://ftp.lotus.com/pub/lotusweb/product/smartsuite/Kvlotus.exe
or
http://keyview-for-lotus.software.informer.com/download/

I trust this helps.

converting x.lwp files

2015-11-16 Thread Tom Christensen
Folks, I have to convert about 3 doz small x.lwp files. I thought OO would
do this. It appears not. Is there any way anyone knows to convert a .lwp
file to something useable in OO or MS? I use WIN 8.

Hi,

At this time I am not able to find the documents that I convert to pdf.

If one exports *unsaved* aoo documents to pdf, aoo will set "save as" folder
to "C:\Users\[USERNAME]\Appdata\Roaming\OpenOffice\4\user\gallery".

I thought that clicked on File and exported the document as PDF.

Loss of image resolution when converting into PDF

2014-11-19 Thread Barbaros Akkurt

Hello,
I have a question regarding the loss of image quality when converting to
a PDF document. I have played with the Export to PDF... dialog box to
succeed no compression, but the resulting PDF is still of very low quality.
Would introducing a VERY high resolution image into the document solve
the problem? Images with 600 dpi resolution are frequently requested by
publishers when submitting scientific documents.

Thanks,
Barbaros

Actually, he was quoting the 4.0 release notes.

What about the versions that predate ODF? What was their default
format? IIRC, full ODF support came with v2.0, with the last 1.x
version able to read, but not write ODF files.

See the end of the paragraph I quoted. These were .sxw, .sxc, .sxi,
I think (still supported), not the earlier "legacy StarOffice file
formats (... .sdw, .sdc, .sdd, etc.)". Yes: I had to read that
carefully to see exactly what was being talked about.

The default for OpenOffice.org 1.x was an xml format designed by the
development group the extensions were *.sxw, *.sxc, *.sxi.

The release notes for AOO version 4.0 at
http://www.openoffice.org/development/releases/4.0.0.html say:

We no longer read or write the legacy StarOffice file formats (files
with extensions .sdw, .sdc, .sdd, etc.). Removal of this code makes
the OpenOffice codebase easier to maintain. The legacy formats have
never been the default format in any version of OpenOffice. Users
with legacy StarOffice documents are advised to re-save them into
ODF format (.odt, *.ods, *.odp, etc.) *before upgrading* to Apache
OpenOffice 4.0. This can be done using File - Wizards - Document
Converter in OpenOffice 3.x OpenOffice 1.x files (*.sxw, *.sxc,
*.sxi) are still supported.

You could temporarily install version 3.4.1 in order to carry out the
conversions. See http://www.openoffice.org/download/other-341.html .

I trust this helps.
