What, if any, differences are there between OpenOffice and LibreOffice?
I am using LibreOffice under Windows 10.

Bill,

When Stardivision Gmbh, a German software firm headed by Marco
Boerries started making its StarOffice suite available across
different PC and Mac platforms, they quickly realized they needed to
support several operating systems at once with little reprogramming
and visual differences (for the user). So they ended up creating a set
of graphical components for "StarOffice" that looked the same and
worked across the several supported operating systems (back then,
Windows, Unix, OS/2, etc). They called that "framework as "StarView"
(1)

Then came Sun Microsystems which bought Stardivision and created Sun
StarOffice and OpenOffice.org opening up the source code. It included
further cross-platform abilities like separation of the different apps
that make the "offic suite" into components (2).

Then Oracle bought Sun and then after a revolt by a group of external
programmers, Oracle decided to hand over OpenOffice.org to the Apache
Software Foundation.

All the above is to say: the cross-platform fundamentals remain the
same on today's AOO. It has and continues to look and behave the same
no matter what OS you use. There is little if any retraining to be
done when moving across AOO running on different operating systems.

The programs should work and behave the same no matter what the
underlying operating system youu are using.

I, and several other volunteers, use AOO Writer with OS X

I have submitted a problem to the forum, but all the response I get is from
people using OO Writer on Windows and they cannot understand the problem.

You could have stated the problem you were having. I searched the forums and
found your posts.

A link to a bug report was given. Also you stated you were using AOO with Windows 10 under
Parallels. There is a Mac OS X native version of AOO. No need to run under Parallels.

I have been using AOO (and its predecessor OOo) on Macs for 10 years and have never had the
problem you described.

I've used Apache Open Office Writer on Ubuntu and since 2013 on OSX and
have had no problems. I just make sure to save as ms .doc for
compatibility when sharing with others.

I'm not a moderator but have been using oo longer than OS X and am now
comfortable with both. Differences are minor - all the functionality is there.
Resubmit yr question and I will help if I can.

There are Volunteers on the Forum who use OS X; they may be online later.
Remember that he Forum is manned by volunteers who give of their knowledge in
their own time; the demands of Real Life may limit their involvement.

In doubt, create an issue in BugZilla https://issues.apache.org/ooo/ and
attach your file, or an extract if it contains sensitive information.
This will allow everybody to have a look. One of the main advantages in
ODF should be that it doesn't depend on a specific application... but
bugs exist, so it might be that one of the applications has a problem.

Differences with LO OO

I have both LibreOffice and OpenOffice on my computers. One thing I've
noticed is that documents don't always appear the same in them. For
example, I have one document which is a table in landscape mode in LO,
but appears in portrait mode in OO. Is this a problem with Open
Document Formats? Or one of the apps?
