This is my experience as well and it does help with self publishing. To make
significant changes you need an editable file.

You cannot open PDF files in Apache OpenOffice.
It is not designed for that.

You have to open it with a designated program, like PDF Reader or Adobe.
Most webbrowser, like Google Chrome, are able to open PDF files.

In OpenOffice you can Export to PDF.
Probably you have made a document in AOO's .odt format.
Saved that and Exported it to PDF.

To work on the PDF you have to open the .odt-document and make your changes
there.
Then Export to PDF again.

When I go to open a pdf file that was saved in Apache Office, I get a pop up
box, ASCII box and when I close it and try to open the file, it is in some kind
of code that I cannot read. I can open the same file in Google Chrome and it is

It's a bit dangerous to post your phone number like that. Anyone including
scammers can read this message of yours and calls impersonating to be
anyone "official sounding" and trick you into installing malware, remote
access tools and even if they "fix your problem" you really don't know the
person on the other side and what they have done to your PC if you let them
have remote access.

In any case if the documents do not contain proprietary, personal
information or trade secrets, the wise thing to do is to upload the files
to some cloud drive (like Google drive) and let someone else download them
and check them on their computer, not yours.

Dear Sirs

I have a number of articles which for some reason have become corrupted. My
articles are single column and I always use Tahoma. Some of these articles
appear as multi-column and I do not know how it happened or how to fix it. I
have managed to create a couple of blanks.

Try a free program called FoxIt Reader. If I remember correctly you can take a
pdf and save it as a word document. After it's in Word format, you can save it
as odt.

If I were faced with this problem, I would try copying the text from the pdf,

out the pdf, or open it in your pdf reader, then type it in by hand.

I know this probably isn't the solution you want, but there really aren't many

document. The actual text in the document is now only a picture of each page.

Good luck!

Re: PDF to odt problem

2023-12-15 Thread dkoch
There is a means to convert PDF files to Word files. You can then save them as
ODT, though if there is special formatting in Word, the conversion may not be
exact.

Foxit has a PDF Editor, as well as a free Reader version. The Editor is often
available for a free trial period after you download the free Reader. A line
from their web page describes the process of PDF to Word conversion:

      1.  Open the pdf file with Foxit PDF Editor, go to Convert tab>To MS
office> Word or File tab>Export>To MS Office>Word>Save As, Save As window will
pop up.
I do not have the Editor version, so don't know if it will also convert
directly to ODT.

Almost every OCR program which produces plain text will require substantial
reformatting, which the proposed alterations may well require anyway. OCR, no
matter how accurately carried out, will have a small error rate: in my
experience 1% to 2%, which will require detailed proofreadng and correction.

Some careful searching may reveal PDF to ODT conversion programs that preserve
formatting, but the need for detailed proofreading and correction will still
exist. On the occasions I OCR long texts, I always reformat.

I assume that by 'totally distorted' Yvonne meant that the text was present but
the formatting was scrambled. If that is the case, I don't think that optical
character recognition (OCR) software would do any better, and it might
introduce errors in the text itself.

I'm not aware of any better solution than using PDF-to-text conversion
software, which is what I assume the Best Buy people did. It might be worth
looking for such software that does a better job of reproducing the original
formatting. In my experience, a fair amount of manual editing is required,
depending on how complicated the formatting was.

The easiest way is to enter the data it asks for. That data is written
to your Apace OpenOffice (AOO) profile and is used by many of the letter

I assume that you have other word-processor files that work OK in OpenOffice?
If so, it's possible that something has become corrupted in this particular
file. Are you able to do Edit > Select All (or just control-A)? If so, you
could try do that and then Edit > Copy (or control-C) and then paste it into a
new document, either as a regular paste (control-V) or with Edit > Paste
Special > Paste Unformatted Text.

First, Ian you're not a dumbo.  If you haven't closed your document, try Ctrl +
Z which is an undo command.  You may also open the document and you will see a
size of font drop down, you can do a Ctrl + A which is for "select all" on your
document then choose 14 font size from the drop down.  That should fix it.

Andropen Office, as its name suggests, is for Android only. There is an
iOS application AO Office

The is also Collabora Office, a free offshoot of LibreOffice at

Microsoft recently introduced "Clipboard History" in Windows 11.

Can you please try to disable it and look if things get better?

Zuerst: Ein "OpenOffice Team" existiert nicht - hier lesen viele
engangierte und zum Teil sehr erfahrene User mit.

Die meisten sprechen aber nur englisch.

Also zum Thema:

Wieso Heise?

handelt

Mit freundlichen Grüssen

It is no longer working when you attach a .odt file to email through Gmail
in Google Chrome. I nor the person I sent the email to can open up the
attached .odt filewhich was created in Apache OpenOffice.

This just recently happened within the last week when I upgraded from
4.1.12 Open Office to 4.1.13.

Another thing that occurred. When I was downloading Apache OpenOffice
4.1.13, it gave me the following error message:

This is usually caused by a Microsoft Windows update changing the File
Associations for OpenOffice files to point instead to MS Office. All one needs
to do is reset such file associations to point to OpenOffice as the default
application for these. Look up how to do this - it is simple.

This file capture may happen repeatedly with other Windows updates in future.

Re: Problem

2022-10-18 Thread PCS

Dear Hugh,

You say that Microsoft [Office] has taken over all your OpenOffice files. That
suggests it is the default productivity application suite. If you genuinely
have "no use whatsoever" for Microsoft office, uninstalling it should free you
from it and cause your documents to be opened by another app, e.g. OpenOffice
or LibreOffice, provided that a suitable app is available, but I can’t remember
if the available or selected app automatically becomes the new default app or
if you have to set the default.

I say uninstalling MS Office "should free you from it" because I do not know if
a MS Windows computer will allow you to uninstall MS Office, perhaps Mr Gates
may insist that you keep MS Office so that he can keep billing you for it
because you have to use it because it keeps preventing you from using any
alternative. I had MS Office on my Mac under an Education licence for a few
years, because it was required for my children’s schoolwork, but I uninstalled
it when they no longer needed it (and I was glad to be rid of it), but I don’t
know if you can uninstall it from a Windows computer.

However, you should not have to uninstall MS Office unless you really do want
to get rid of it, you should be able to open your documents with any available
alternate application. On the Mac this is done by right-clicking on the
document’s icon, then scrolling in the selection window to “Open With” and
selecting the app you want to use from the list of available applications, or
selecting “Other …” to open the Applications folder if the app you want to use
is not listed in the initial selection window, or selecting “App Store …” if
the app you want is not installed, then download and install the app, or in the
case of OO or LO go instead to the download website to get the app.

The previous paragraph outlines how to open a document on the Mac with a
non-default app (unless the default app is the only one available). I assume
that Windows must offer some equivalent procedure. It is a long time since I
have reset the default app for a document on the Mac, so I would probably have
to look up how to do it now, which I assume you should be able to do as easily
as me, and if you are using Windows it will almost certainly be a different
procedure anyway, so there would be no point in me telling you how to do it on
the Mac, but surely Windows cannot be so inferior to the Mac that it doesn't
let you set a default app when more than one of your installed apps is able to
open a document? I prefer the Mac for its desktop, dock, and filing system, the
OS itself is all but irrelevant, because whether you use Mac, Linux, or Windows
they all do pretty much the same thing, they just go about it a bit
differently, so what you can do on one you should be able to do on another.

In the unlikely event that you discover that your problem actually is in
OpenOffice rather than in the OS’s default app configuration, you could try
LibreOffice, a popular alternative to OpenOffice. I have used OO routinely on
the Mac for many years, and I occasionally used LO on Linux (their documents
are interchangeable), and I have recently switched from OO to LO on the Mac
because the last OO update seemed to introduce some glitches. Some features are
implemented better on OO than on LO, and some are better on LO than OO, and a
couple of LO’s ways of doing things still annoy me even though I should be used
to them by now, but LO is at least as good as OO overall, so if you are having
problems with OO it could be worth trying LO, but I doubt that your problem is
in the app, you will almost certainly find it is in the default app selection.

Regards,

Peter.

Causing problem is much possible that your files created and saved by OO
Suite are opened and not closed properly in OO applications then so too
much versions locked for edition.
Check on paths directly for files named ~*.#* and delete them all from hard

You can use a workaround:
Open the page style dialog, e.g. Format > Page.
Go to Tab 'Page'. Note the values in section 'Margins' and then set them to
zero. Ignore the printer warning.
Go to Tab 'Borders'. In section 'Line arrangement Default' select the type 'Set
all four borders'. In section 'Line Color' select the same color as you have
chosen for the background fill. In section 'Spacing to contents' set the values
the same as they were previously in section 'Margins'.

If you do not pay a developer or find a developer, that will do it in his spare
time, it is unlikely that a border-less page fill will be implemented in Apache
OpenOffice. The problem is tracked in
https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=9370.
You could try LibreOffice instead, which has this feature.

Kind regards,
Regina

Could that be me?!

But I have now had the problem occur again with the cell formatting
appearing to be consistent. I am attaching a copy of a spreadsheet
with data sorted by column I. The cells in this column all identify
their category/format as 'Text/@' and I have not to my knowledge
changed anything. Note however that from row 1813 the sort begins
again - I have highlighted these rows in orange for clarity.

Although the cell formatting is indeed Text, the majority of the
values in column I are actually numbers. You can see that fairly
simply by selecting the column and then going to Format | Cells... |
Alignment | Text alignment | Horizontal and selecting Default from
the drop-down menu. Your black numbers will show as right-aligned,
with your orange text values left-aligned. I'm guessing that the
black values were entered into cells that were formatted as Number,
the column was then formatted as Text, and the orange values entered
after this. Note that Text formatting will ensure that entered values
are saved as text, but will not change the actual contents of cells
already occupied, so your numbers stay as numbers.

A simple way forward would be to convert all the values in column I
to numbers - thus changing your orange values from text values to
numerical values. An easy way to do this is to select the column and
use Data | Text to Columns... | OK. But note that you will need to
deal with the rogue value in I1812 first, or it will scupper the
effect. The you can sort column I as you wish.

I have tried reformatting these 'rogue' cells. I have tried a
blanket reformat of both columns.

Note that changing format does not change the actual contents of cells.

I think there are also some strange effects caused by cell protection
which may be causing confusion.

I trust this helps.

Sam,

As previously stated to fix: highlight the problematic cell(s) and choose
Format/Cells/Borders and set borders to what you want them to be.

This happens if you Copy (or Cut) and Paste. This action will pickup all
formatting and paste it into the target cell(s). To prevent this from happening
Copy (or Cut) and Paste Special, this allows you to decide what you actually
paste into the target cell(s).

Fwd: Problem saving file - revised

2022-03-14 Thread Marvin Vann

Good afternoon,

I’m having difficulty saving the file I’ve been working on for some time.
When save attempted, the progress bar at bottom progresses about half-way then
starts over. Keeps repeating until program force terminated.

1. Have, of course, tried repeating with failure.

2. As experiment, loaded last good saved version; document looks correct.
Then 1) added a space and 2) deleted said space. Office now thinks document
has been modified. It should save-as identical to the source it was loaded
from. Instead the progress bar behaves as described above and keeps trying
forever, and displays the following message:

Error saving the document Suitland 58 Deceased b:
Write Error
Error in writing sub-document content.xml.

3. Thinking the program might be corrupted, I deleted and reinstalled Open
Office. Same problem persists.

4. This happened once before several months ago. Workaround was to open a new
file and to copy the unsaveable file piece by piece and when complete document
had been moved the Save As command worked. Even this now fails.

5. Looked at your help files, found nothing relevant.

6. Forgot to mention in previous msg: Running on iMac with OS = 10.14.6
Sierra, 24GB memory.

Maybe idea out of left field, but is there plenty of free space on drive
that is target of save? Especially if OS is on that drive too.

If not, try saving to a different drive or a thumb drive.

Have experienced very strange problems with drives that have run out of
space.

starts over.

If it's not from the appstore, they don't like that.

If you're not familiar with this, mommy Apple wants you to
suck from the apple teet when you download any software. That way mommy knows
it's 'safe' for HER computer.

What you do is...

1: Open System Preferences:Security & Privacy

2: Click the "General" tab. Keep this visible when you try to download / open
/ install your sofware.

3: NOW try to download / open / install. Watch the Security control panel in
the area where it says "Allow apps downloaded from:". You'll probably see a
'whine' message there that complains about what you're doing.

4: WHEN Apple 'whines' that you really shouldn't do that (or you're being a
naughty boy), tell it "YES, I really want to do this.". They may try to scare
you away repeatedly (just in case there are any "naughty bugs" in the sofware
you're downloading). If you decide to keep pushing past all Apple's "Danger
Will Robinson, DANGER!" warnings, you can download, install, and finally RUN
the software in spite of Apple's "mommying".

I'm sick of being nannied.
Am in the process of setting up a Raspberry Pi to get off the Apple
merry-go-round teet.

Update Installation problem

2021-12-13 Thread Peter Wilde
Hi
I have been using your excellent product for many years.
At present, I am trying to install the latest update, but the installation
wizard gets to a point were a pop-up window states: "Error 1500. Another
installation is in progress. You must complete that installation before
continuing this one". I cannot find where another installation is taking place
and have deleted all previous update installation programmes.
Any idea what is wrong or how to fix it?

5 months writing, and no backups? Tut tut! You may have powered off your
computer before the file was written to disk from the Write buffers.

If you are using Windows, try the methods set out in this Tutorial which will
tell how to find and undelete temporary files which OpenOffice used in course
of editing.

Hello,

I was using OpenOffice for my project that took me more than 5 months to
write. And today I opened it and almost had a heart attack.. some of
lithuanian letters in the text are in chinese and other markings. Is it
possible to return the original text?

I did not do anything different, I have saved the file as always and closed
it. It's in original OpenOffice format.

Thank you for the answer,

Close OpenOffice, then delete or rename your OpenOffice User Profile; then
start OpenOffice again. That almost always cures the problem.

Trying again.

This may be the "wrong" email address, but there is no trace of the "right"
one, so please forward as appropriate.

I have the "missing dictionary" problem where all words in a doc are underlined
in red.  I understand it is common, but it is new to me.

NONE of the solutions published in the User Forums for earlier versions fit
with my installation of 4.1.10.  In particular, the My Macros + button shows no
entries, so there is no config_backend_cleaner.
C:\Users\xx\AppData\Roaming\OpenOffice\4\user\Scripts does not contain a
python folder.

I hesitate to try the python code solutions for older versions for obvious
reasons. The  User  forums also generally carry an intimidating air of
superiority, as if all "ordinary" users were regarded as a bit dim.  This is
not on.

Please can you send me a fix for this problem in 4.1.10.

You should use something like:

sudo dnf install ./*.rpm ./desktop-integration/*freedesktop*.rpm

The "redhat-menus" package is not suitable for Fedora.

Only one of the packages in desktop-integration/ must be installed, and
for Fedora the "freedesktop" one is the right choice.
