RE: Windows 8, Open Office Install Failed
Hi John, Sometimes there are failures because of incompatibilities in protocols. And sometimes there is a failure somewhere in the path between the download and you. The next time you try, please make note of the following things: 1. The name and version of the browser you are using. 2. Are you using Windows 8 or 8.1 and on what computer? 3. When you go to http://openoffice.org/download and select download for Windows, and are patiently waiting for the download to start (don't click anything), note what it says about "Mirror provided by:" in the bar that mentions Apache OpenOffice and what to do if the download doesn't start or doesn't work. 4. When the download starts and you are asked to run or save the file, note the "from" there too. Save the file of course. 5. Where are you saving the file? If you have tried more than once, it helps to give the files different names so you can compare what ends up being there. If the problem persists, please provide that information with your report back to this list. Here is further investigation that you can conduct. 6. Does the file that is stored resemble the name of the file, but it may say something like -partial on the end? 7. If the file seems to be there (it will be about 134 MB), there is more you can do. (The file properties, if you check them by right-clicking on the file name in the Windows File Explorer, should provide a size of 140,910,890 bytes.) 8. If it doesn't seem to be there it means there was some sort of interruption and it is then necessary to look for other causes. Let us know and we can look at how to trouble-shoot that. 9. If the file repeatedly seems to be complete, but failure is stated every time, rename the file so everything *after* .exe in the name that was used is stripped off. 10. If you know how to do this, you can download a digital hash value for the download you have and check the hash to confirm that the file is actually complete and downloaded accurately. 11. If (10) indicates the file was corrupted then treat the same as (8, above) and include these further details in your report. 12. If you don't do (10) or the digital hash checks, you can attempt executing the installer. Save all open work first. 13. When you attempt execution, it may fail immediately. If the installer starts up, it will check the file itself. If that checks out, the installation will probably proceed correctly. - Dennis PS: For any follow-up, please reply to users @ openoffice.apache.org where other experts may have advice and others can learn the solutions to common problems. >From you E mail address I intuit thatht your primary ISP is in Canada. I do not know if you are an Anglophone r Francophone, but from your comments I must presume you are an Anglophone. I hope that you have downloaded the German language version of Open Office through the official open office site at www.openoffice.org. That sdite provides you many language options for the Open Office suite, and many options for the operating system under which you will run Open Office. I suggest that you uninstall the German language version of Open Office which you have downloaded. There really is no way to "switch" it to English, whether US English, British English, or Canadian English. After uninstalling the German language version, go to www.openoffice.org and select the "flavor" of English version which you want to use, as well as the Operating System you are using, and download ONLY from www.open office.org. The Open Office website will take you to Source Forge, from which your download will be obtained. Downloading any language version of Open Office from any source other than Open Office.org is risky and may result in installation of various forms of undesirable programs being installed on your system.
