[users] Monthly Update for Knowledgebase

2005-11-09 Thread Jonathon Coombes
Hi All,

Just to let you know that along with the upgrade of the Knowledgebase
site, I have started to implement some more features. This includes
the option to browse the knowledgebase. At this stage, in its simplest
form, it is purely to see the last 20 questions that have been added
to the database.

Secondly, the search page lists a section on recent questions. If your
question does not come up here, do not panic! It actually shows the
questions which were unanswered, that is, if you did not read an
answer and/or provide feedback it will remain in the list, otherwise
it is removed from the recent questions.

Below is the FAQ as usual. At this stage there is 860 entries in the
knowledgebase.

Regards
Jonathon
--
OOo Tips: http://mindmeld.cybersite.com.au/tips.rss
OOo Knowledgebase: http://mindmeld.cybersite.com.au
Training4Linux: http://www.training4linux.com
Cybersite Consulting: http://www.cybersite.com.au
OpenOffice.org Knowledgebase

1. What is the OpenOffice.org Knowledgebase?
The OpenOffice.org knowledgebase (or KB for short), is a collection
of knowledge regarding OpenOffice.org from previous and existing
users. This enables users to query the knowledgebase to see if there
is any information relating to a specific problem or idea they may
have regarding the software.

2. Where is the Knowledgebase?
The KB is currently at location http://mindmeld.cybersite.com.au.
This site is in continual development to help improve the service.

3. Why have a knowledgebase? Why not just have the FAQ's?
The KB actually contains a lot of the information already in the
FAQ's at this time, so there is no missing out on information.
The reasons why it would be benefitial are two fold: a) it can be
queried using English in a natural way, and b) it can "create"
knowledge based on existing information and feedback. It also has
the chance of duplicating the same FAQ, but this provides a
slightly different view and provides depth to the knowledge.

4. Can I add questions and answers to the knowledgebase?
By all means! Simply click on the contribute button on the side and
provide the question in simple, easy to understand terms. Then fill
in the answer with as much detail as possible. Once done, simply
submit it for review.

5. I submitted a question, but it is not showing up? Why not?
The questions that are submitted are not immediately visible to the
public. This is to avoid any bad submissions that may be made by
individuals. The questions are submitted and then reviewed by the
moderators who then approve them and make them visible to the public.
Once made visible, they will show up as new entries on any search
for seven days, then are treated as normal questions from then on.

6. The question I asked gave a list of answers, what do I do?
The answers are based on the "intelligence" of the software trying
to match your question. This means that some of the answers may be
what you want, some may be close, and others not related at all.
Look at providing feedback (see below) to these to help the system
learn for a better response next time.

7. The page asked about providing feedback, why is this used?
For each question that finds an answer, you will be asked for feedback.
This means selecting the option of Yes,No, or Maybe for each of the
possible answers. Doing this will increase the "intelligence" of the
knowledgebase in matching answers next time. You do not have to provide
feedback for every answer, but 3-5 feedbacks per question will help
improve it dramatically.

8. What if there is no match for my question?
Contribute the question anyway so that it can be added to the knowledgebase.
Then submit your question to the users mailing list at www.openoffice.org.
This functionality is in the process of being automated to make it simpler
for new users.

9. Can I access the Knowledgebase in my own Language?
Currently the knowledgebase is all in English. If there is enough
interest and help from other people, it can certainly be modified
to adjust for other languagues. If you are interested in this area,
please let me know.

All you need to do, to reply, is 'reply' to users@openoffice.org via email.

Interesting error message. There are some other people that are having
the same problem (you can find these by searching the web using
google). They all seem to be pre-Version 2.0 however.

I can't remember, but are you using 2.0 OpenOffice?

For your first question, I believe the bitmaps are on the site, under

makes a great product called Documents To Go, which can open Microsoft

This is what I do:
1. I only set the print ranges to the sheet that I REALLY want to print. So, I
do it one time at a time.
2. Or, If you still prefer the current way, you can preview the sheet that you
want to print first, then on the print menu, choose the PAGE that contain the
previewed sheet only.

I'm on a similar platform, but when I try to replicate what you are
doing it doesn't crash. It doesn't do what your trying to do, but it
certainly doesn't crash.

Are you trying to copy in the whole PDF (is there more than one page?)
or a single page. It would be better if within the pdf reader, you
select what you are trying to copy, then copy and paste.

I've just tried selecting (using adobe acrobat as the reader), copying
and pasting into draw - works fine.

You can (depending on what you want to do with the spreadsheet at the
end of the day) simply referencing each of the separate spreadsheets
from a single spreadsheet if you want.

Alternatively you could copy and paste the details into a single
spreadsheet as well.

Re: [users] [moderated]

2005-11-09 Thread Paul
1. You can insert the 'page number' field, then righ clicking on the
field and selecting "fields" you are shown a dialog box. On that
dialog box (bottom right) there is a field titled 'off set'. In this
box you can enter a value that you want the page numbers offset by.

eg, If you want to start the page numbering at 3, you would enter the
offset to be 2 (1 + 2 = 3).

Have a look at the inbuilt documentation surrounding "offsets" - there
are some caveats to its use.

2. This could be due to the second paragraph having a different style
that the first. If they are the same, then this shouldn't really
happen.

[users] This may be a bug?

2005-11-09 Thread tony chamberlain
Hi

Here is my information before my question:

  -OS: Linux 2.4.20-8 #1 Thu Mar 13 17:54:28 EST 2003
  -OOCALC version: 1.0.2
Note: for consistency we have to use the above
version
of Linux and cannot go to a higher version.

Problem

I have an xls file I created with oocalc. I
made it an an xls so more people could view it via the
internet.

This file is a spread sheet of bugs I found in a
Linux program. I am testing several programs, so
for a new bug list I copied the above xls file, saved
it as a new name. I wanted to edit some of the cells.
I can select all the cells, and delete contents.
HOWEVER, if I try to edit the contents it won't work.
I put the mouse there and double click I do not get
the text selection cursor and cannot edit the text.

This seems, however, to be an itermittent problem,
which happens usually, but not always.

To answer some questions: yes, CELL PROTECTION,
and DOCUMENT PROTECTION (SHEET, DOCUMENT) are off.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank You
Tony

2005-11-09 Thread R. Andy

Hi,

I have two problems I cannot resolve with OpenOffice:
1. I can insert the page number macro in the heading of a document, but
I cannot change the automatic numbering system. In other words, if I
want the pages to be numbered staring a "6", I cannot do it. If I insert
the number 6 into the header in place of the number "1" that the macro
starts with, then all of the pages become number "6".

2. When I try to make two paragraphs into one by backspacing the second
chapter into the upper one, then the first word in the upper paragraph
automatically moves out to the margin. In order to indent the first word
in the now combined paragraph, I need to click on Format/Default
formatting, which seems unnecessary.

Other than these problems, I find the app to be equal to or better than MS.

Thanks,

Ray

I think Microsoft is starting to give up the floor slowly, no longer
advertising his office product a good choice for home use, but rather
trying to show its usefulness in professional office, with its "Share
Point" - easyness of sharing documents between office workers and
implicit advanced business functionality. As for Sun/Google alliance, if
I were to state my opinion, I would only say that the Summer Of Code was
cool and I would like such an event during the upcoming summer.

Sharepoint is a M$ product which is basically a document repository.
It offers version control, centralised storage, integrates tightly

Hi Jonatan,
I got the same result except that the list was not erased, the list box
was cleared. All the original keys were still defined, but no new ones
were added.I was able to move some custom keys by copying 'common.xml'. from

Application Data\OpenOffice.org2\name>\config\soffice.cfg\global\accelerator\en-US

There's also a copy of the file for each module in:

Application Data\OpenOffice.org2\name>\config\soffice.cfg\modules\\accelerator\en-US

The location of Application Data varies with the version of windows
you're using.

Check the help index for 'paragraph marks'. ooo uses a different procedure

Re: [users] Question OpenOffice

You'll have to be a little more specific. What are you doing when the
error appears? What OS are you using? I'm assuming it is something to
do with databases, are you trying to connect to an existing one or
create a new one?

Little more info will go a long way...

Thanks, /paul

Re: [users] Re: confusion re replys from all that responded to my need 4 help

2005-11-09 Thread Alan Frayer
I believe the OP has the idea that OpenOffice.org is a complete
operating system, rather than an office productivity program. The OP's
question makes sense if OOo was an operating system like Linux or
Windows, but it is not.

For the Richards Clan:
OpenOffice.org is an integrated word processor, spreadsheet, database,
and presentation program (like Microsoft Office, for example). As such,
it needs to be installed as a Windows (or Linux) program, not as an OS
to replace Windows.

If you highlight the data you want to work with, go to the edit menu

If that does not work could you reply back with some more detail

Are you having problems saving the file in one of the many file formats,
such as Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP or something else? I ask because this
is one of the nice features of OOo.

As to your question, you have to download the whole thing but you can
install only those features you wish.

On another note, why not tell your recipients about OOo so they too can
enjoy the tool?

Re: [users] [moderated]

2005-11-09 Thread rlshadow
It is not possible to install Impress only, you have to downoad and
install the total OpenOffice. org 2.0.

But don't despair, your specific problem is easily solved. If you are
sharing a document with someone who does not have OpenOffice, but has
Microsoft Office instead, simply save your file in a Microsoft format.
File > Save As ... then where it says "Save as type:", select
"Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP (.doc)". Then the person with Microsoft will
be able to open it.

Another (actually, better) alternative, if they only need to view it
and/or print it but don't need to edit it, is to export it as a PDF
file. File > Export as PDF... That way, no matter what software they
have (as long as they have a PDF viewer such as the free Adobe Acrobat
Reader), they can open it and it will look exactly like you want it to
look.

OpenOffice uses as XML type saving as default. For
example the default extension for OpenOffice Writer,
(or text document) is .odt. If you want to leave it
deffault saving as .odt, when you want to save it as a
Microsoft Office file, Click File/Save As. At the
Save as Type box, click the down arrow on the right of
the box to change the file type. Highlight and select
Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP [.doc].

or

If you want your OpenOffice 2.0 to open and save as
default Microsoft Office files, Click
Tools-Options-Load/Save-General. Change the Always
Save As box from OpenDocument Text (.odt) to Microsoft
Word 97/2000/XP (.doc)

Re: [users] PgUp/Dn, Backspace, etc keys refuse to work in OOWriter 2.0 for Win only

2005-11-09 Thread Luís Costa
First of all, thanks for the replies.

I'm still clueless on what the problem.

At first I thought it might be exactly that, a key that might be
pressed without me knowing about it, or some kind of active state that
made the keys unusable.

But if so, the problem would also reflect in the other OOffice
programs, which work 100% fine. The problem only appears in OOWriter
for Windows only, which is very strange.

What does OOWriter for Windows has more than the other OO programs in
terms of keyboard handling?

The answer (if any) to this question might help me see what's wrong.

Re: [users] Re: Cannot Open Files Residing on Server

2005-11-09 Thread Alan Frayer
After seeing these messages, I tried OOo 2.0 on a W2K workstation,
opening a file residing on a shared folder on a Win98SE workstation. I
had NO problem with this. I wonder if there is an issue with accessing
files on remote NTFS partitions.

please vote for the issue so that we can increase the chances of it
getting done sooner. I submitted this issue quite a while ago and as
time goes on we are getting more and more occurrences of it. There
seems to be a trend with underscores in the names of the servers

solution. If you have never used OpenOffice's issue tracker please

Hi,

I recently installed OOo v.2 on some computers in my office LAN.

Server :Win2K server
Workstations: win98 and winXP pro

1.PROBLEM: From a win98 workstation, when I try to open an OOo v.1
file residing on the server or an xp machine I get a "file does not
exist" error message.

a.All file manager functions eg. copy, move, properties etc works
and I can open text files(residing on the server or another winXP
workstation with notepad from the same win98 workstation.
b.Folder permissions are open to EVERYONE-Full Control
c.I can open the same file (residing on the server) from another
workstation (win98) running OOo v.1.14 or winXP running OOo v.2
d.Same file (residing on win2k server or xp pro workstation) copied
to win98 workstation can be opened and works normally.

2.PROBLEM: I cannot select the
Tools>Options>OpenOffice.org>View>"Use system fonts for use interface.
a.The check box is greyed-out on my win98 machines.
b.It is possible with xp machines.

3.NOTED: OOo v.2 saved files (in OpenOffice.org 1 format) is about
10-15% bigger than same file saved by OOo v.1.14

Hope you could let me know how problems 1 (high priority) and 2 can be
solved asap as I would like adopt the OpenDocument standard across all
my workstations in the office and at home.

Thanks.

[users] File-Open-Dialog last very long to open

2005-11-09 Thread Ralf Baerwaldt1
Hello !

I have a time problem while opening a directory. This directory
is a smbfs share on an other server. Client and Server are connected
by ISDN (128 kbit/s) and both are Linux-Debian (OO Version 2.0).

When opening a file, I have to wait for some minutes. While waiting
I see a lot of traffic going over the ISDN line.

What happens ? What can I do to make it faster ?

Doing a "ls -l" works much faster (within 10 s when the line
was down and automounter was off, within 1 s when line and
automounter are up).

regards, Ralf Baerwaldt

I believe that this is a feature of the FC build. I had to completely
remove openoffice.org from my FC4 box and install from the
downloads.openoffice.org image.

[users] "For the current document only" in Languages gone from 2.0 (Fedora Core version)

2005-11-09 Thread Toralf Lund
I've mentioned this before, but I'll repost as I suspect most people
didn't understand what I was talking about:

In the Fedora's build of OOo 2.0, there is no longer a "For the current
document only" box in Tools->Options->Language Settings->Languages, so
I'm no longer able to set the document language. In fact I can't even
select languages as the menus are grayed out - but the current setting
is OK *as default*.

What has happened here? Is this unique to the build I'm using, or caused
by a change in the OOo code base?

As it happens, I've always thought that the document language setup did
not belong in the above mentioned interface (it should set default
language only), but I need *some* way to set document language...

[users] CD labels

2005-11-09 Thread Bill Morrow
Hi
On a different, very high volume, newsgroup, several days ago I
requested info on creating CD labels in Linux. I was referred to
a template in :
http://ooextras.sourceforge.net/downloads/labels/
and I found one with the file name:
"CD_label/cd_label_template.sxd" - a template for CD labels. OK,
now I have some familiarity with OO.o Calc, so my request is
where (for *.sxd) should I start reading in the "help" section
to get some insight of this branch (which ever one it is) OO.o?
I have the Linux version 1.1.4.
Any comments on this template?
TIA

[users] saving customized shortcut key list

2005-11-09 Thread Catai, J.R.
Hi,

I have OOo 2.0 installed in 5 off-line machines (win xp). In my
preferred machine I customized some shortcut keys. I saved the list in a
file but when I bring this file to another machine and load it, for my
surprise, not only new 'keys' were not there but the whole list was
erased.

How can I make the other machines have the same shortcut key list
without doing it manually?

Could you help me?

Re: [users] install / deinstall SOLVED

2005-11-09 Thread Marco López
Hi all

I installed a registry monitoring program. Namely
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Regmon.html

So I found out msiexec read some values at
HKLM\Software\Classes\Installer\Products\C00C409A0B03920409847
7195E8902A8

I deleted that entry.

I have oo2 installed and working.
