Dear Brian Barker and Harold Fuchs,

Thank you very much for the immediate replies.

I did what you two said. Under the Name, my file has the correct extension

But under the Type, it was still TheGIMP20, not PNG Image.

So I went to Google for PNG image appearing as TheGIMP20
 http://www.google.com/search?hl=enq=PNG+image+appearing+as+TheGIMP20

I found a discussion on Why Did Gimp Change The Jpeg Type To The Gimp
 20?

 http://www.gimptalk.com/forum/topic/Why-Did-Gimp-Change-The-Jpeg-Type-To-20-2779-1.html

With the info from that discussion, I downloaded and installed Image
 Editor
 http://windowsxp.mvps.org/utils/imgeditor.zip
Now, under the Type, my files have their correct types restored. Problems
 solved!

 Sincerely,

 Pu Taang Zomi

The type shown by Windows does *not* depend on the file itself but on the
association between the extension (.png, .doc, ...) and the program that
is registered as the default for opening files with that extension. The
default program is the one that runs when you double click on the name of
the file. If you were to associate .png files with Microsoft Excel then
the type would be displayed as spreadsheet or whatever is the appropriate
name. You had The Gimp as the default program for opening .jpg files. When
you installed Image Editor, the installation process changed the association
and, therefore, the displayed type.

Yep.and is why I said to go into OO and make the selection for
T-Bird. I don't think MickySoft changes affect that option.

Ralph, I honestly don't know.don't use any MACs. If you can't read
the mailboxes directly with T-Bird, then try exporting all mail and
addressbook from Entourage, then import into T-Bird.

See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Importing_and_exporting_your_mail which
says:

   Entourage
   * Import to Thunderbird: Open Entourage and drag and drop the
folders to the desktop. That will create mbox files with an .mbox

There are free PDF creation tools that will work from any application
that can print. They install a virtual printer. You the use Word, or
whatever, to print to that printer. The software asks for the name of a
file into which it prints a PDF version of the document. One of the
best known ones is called PDFCreator and comes from
 http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/

I don't know if this will improve things but it's a lot less work than
using an API to write your own code and, as I say, will work from any

I have enough memory (4 GB; need 600 MB) on my hard drive.

I tried the md5sums procedure but could not install the MDHashTool. As
currently stated at the URL that I was given below
(http://www.openoffice.org/dev_docs/using_md5sums.html)

the MDHash Tool does not work with current versions of Firefox.

In any case, I doubt the problem is a corrupted download. I downloaded

It choked at exactly the same point as the previous one did.

Does anyone have any suggestions about what else I could try?

It sounds as if you might have a corrupt download file. Please go to

It is the policy of allowing unsubscribed posters that causes this. If

No, do not do this. The right thing should be:

Hi,

I just installed open office on my laptop run Windows XP and the writer does
not handle Chinese Characters. I get some of them but not all. If I use

What do I need to do to get all the characters?

[users] bullets and numbering and line-spacing problems

2008-03-22 Thread John Bradley

Hello

Numbering problem.
I am doing a text document in 8pt and every time I try to use
Format/Numbering to place numbers against some short paragraphs, the
numbers come out in a mixture of 10 and 8pt.

I then highlight the numbered paragraphs and select 8pt and the numbers
all change to the required size. However, after saving and reloading the
document again, the numbers change again to a mixture of 10 and 8pt.

Line-spacing problem.

In the same document, again in 8pt, I have several single column/single
row tables to enclose some text. Every time I open the document, the
space below each table has changed from 8pt to twelve point which ruins
the general layout which I then have to do all over again.

Are these two problems a bug?

Regards

John Bradley.

I've never heard of uninstalling part of OpenOffice, though you can
certainly install only part of it. However, partial installs are not
recommended, as you wont save much space and may lose some functions.

Use Writer to open your .DOC files. Then you can export to PDF. You
can do this with the PDF icon on the tool bar or by clicking on File

You say you downloaded it, but did you also install? Assuming you're
running Windows, you have to double click on the downloaded file to
start the installation process. After the install is complete, you
should find an OpenOffice folder and icons in the Start menu.

I'm not quite sure what you're saying. After you download OpenOffice,
you have to install it. Once installed, you can use it to open Word

I don't know if this will improve things but it's a lot less work than
using an API to write your own code and, as I say, will work from any
application (Outlook Express, Internet Explorer, ...) that can print.

--
Harold Fuchs

I have used several of these types of programs before.
The PDF printers work to various levels. Some have
tight coding so you small printer files, others not so
small. I had to get Acrobat 6 many years ago, so I
use it instead. For those who do not have Adobe,
these PDF printers are your only hope.

It is great to have a electronic copy of web site
in PDF format. This helps show off documents
from online sites that you cannot find a PDF
version of it.

iWork provides word processing, presentation, and spreadsheet. If
you are happy with the way you use those functions, then by all means
continue to use iWork for those. OpenOffice will do all of those
plus database and vector drawing. The other thing going for
OpenOffice is that it can save your work in formats approved by the
International Standards Organization for transfer to many other
computers, not just those that have iWork.
